In addition to serving as a chaplain overseas in World War II Rabbi Seligson served Central Synagogue in New York City as assistant rabbi then chief rabbi for 20 years and later as rabbi emeritus. He was also the host of the Message of Israel radio program. The New York Times wrote in his obituary: "Rabbi Seligson was among the first Jewish chaplains to volunteer to serve overseas during World War II. As an Army chaplain he held Passover seders for hundreds of soldiers in Calcutta India and comforted those hospitalized with jungle fever in Burma. He traveled the old Burma Road in a jeep with Christian chaplains holding Sabbath services before sundown to avoid the malaria-bearing mosquitoes that emerged at nightfall. Although Rabbi Seligson went on to achieve national prominence his chaplaincy to soldiers in wartime was his touchstone. ''I feel that it was the greatest work that I have done in my entire ministry'' he wrote in his memoir ''Rabbi Chaplain and Burra Sahib.'' ‎London: Seller Price & Senex 1703. Rare 17th century John Seller map of New England and New York from Daniel Fenning's A New System of Geography. One page with intricate topographical details and hand-colored borders the map displays the eastern portion of New York and New England and includes Long Island Martha's Vineyard Nantucket Block Island and Rhode Island. In near fine condition. Seventeenth century English cartographer compass maker and map seller John Seller was appointed hydrographer to the King in March of 1671. In that year he published his first volume of charts and sailing directions The English Pilot which would run through many editions until the end of the eighteenth century. The trade in maritime maps and charts had until then been dominated by the Dutch. Seller additionally published several textbooks and nautical almanacs including Practical Navigation 1669 and A Pocket Book Containing Several Choice Collections in Arithmetic Geometry Surveying Dialing &c. 1677. Produced between February 1802 and 1830 on the orders of Naopleon Bonaparte and published between 1809 and 1828 1000 copies were printed and distributed to institutions on vergé paper with an 'Égypte ancienne et moderne' watermark visible when held up to the light. Light marginal spotting not touching image otherwise in very fresh fine condition. An engraving from the Description de l’Egypte one of the masterpieces of French printing and the birth of a new field: Egyptology. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte’s conquests in 1798 and 1799 the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates of which 72 colored as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte’s Eastern Armies. The ‘Egyptian campaign’ militarily a disaster demonstrates through the engravings of the Description d’Egypte the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d’Egypte Egyptian Institute who followed Napoleon’s army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge the chemist Berthollet the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists engineers architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants. This edition the so-called “Imperial” edition of the plates for the Description de l’Egypte was printed in four large formats two of which were specially created for it and christened “Moyen-Egypte” and “Grand-Egypte”. A special press was built to print it the process extending over 20 years from 1809 to 1829. The “Imperial” edition proved so popular that a second edition this time in black and white and without the “Egypte ancienne et moderne” watermark – known as the “Royal Edition” – was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke Paris. The engravings of the Description d’Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon illustrator diplomat collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon the Louvre. His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L’Egypte. Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51 reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. Along with the members of the Institut d’Egypte the Natural History Museum’s painter H.J. Redouté brother of Pierre-Joseph Redouté author of Roses the mineralogist Dolomiue and the draughtsman Joly Denon then explored the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt. When however he joined the 21st Light Infantry Regiment as it marched across Upper Egypt in pursuit of the retreating Mameluks in November 1798 he found himself the only civilian. In the very midst of the battle itself he reeled off sketches of the works of art that peppered his path right up to the threshold of the Sudan. Paper yellowing Note: The English classical scholar Thomas Farnaby latinized as Thomas Farnabius ca. 1575-1647 explains in the short preface to this edition that he attributes following Lipsius Delrio J. Scaliger and D. Heinsius the Medea Troades and the Phaedra to the Roman author/philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca Philosophus the Hercules Oetaeus to quispiam poetaster and the Octavia to a nec felicior artifex. The other plays the Hercules Furens Phoenissae Oedipus Agamemnon and the Thysestes he attributes to one Marcus Seneca Tragicus. Nowadays these plays are attributed to Lucius Annaeus Seneca; the Octavia is certainly spurious and of the Hercules Oetaeus it is acknowledged that the language and metre resemble Seneca's. There is 'widespread agreement that Seneca's tragedies are important dramas and that the question whether they were composed for recitation or for performance is largely irrelevant. . Modern opinion is divided over the extent of Stoic doctrine in them; the majority incline toward judging them solely as dramas. Knowledge of the tragedies was spotty in late antiquity; . The earliest complete manuscript is the Codex Etruscus from Italy in the 11th century. It was read by Poliziano and was the basis of the edition of J.F. Gronovius Amsterdam 1661 the first reliable printed text. . Seneca was by far the most important classical model for Renaissance tragedy at a time when Greek tragedy was hardly known. . There is philosophical reflection especially in the choruses but that is not their main purpose and there is psychological subtlety despite the rhetoric. . Julius Caesar Scaliger in his Poetices maintained that Seneca surpassed the Greek tragedians in dignity maiestas and had greater polish and brilliance cultus ac nitor than Euripides. The full page 'Seneca standing in his bath' is engraved by Cornelius Galle and made after the famous painting of Rubens 'the death of Seneca'. The full page portrait of Seneca was engraved after a drawing of Rubens. A smaller engraved portrait of Seneca 11.5x13.5 cm on page XXIV after the Italian scholar and antiquarian Fulvius Orsinus imago quae a Fulvio quidem Ursino prodita est. Woodcut initials. § The 'Officina Plantiniana' issued 2 'Opera' editions of Seneca in 1652. This is the second issue probably printed by Petrus III Bellerus for Balthasar Moretus. Faint waterstain in the right margin of the last 6 gatherings Note: The Roman philosopher and politician Lucius Annaeus Seneca ca. 4 BC - 65 AD has ever since antiquity been controversial. He was 'attacked for his Latin style his political compromises and his wealth. . Seneca . devoted himself to philosophy finally being charged with complicity in the conspiracy of Piso in 65. His suicide ordered by Nero is described by Tacitus . The death scene 'imago vitae suae' 'the image of his life' has been a significant element in Seneca's influence on posterity. . His style was urgent colourful and pointed appropriate for the fragmented ethical and political ambiguities of his time and it ultimately proved to be an effective vehicle for the Latin Church Fathers'. 'The classical tradition' Cambridige Mass. 2010 p. 873 By the 4th century Seneca's reputation as an author and as a philosopher had recovered. He is praised by Boethius d. ca. 524 and has through the works of Cassiodorus d. ca. 585 and Martin of Braga d. ca. 579 influenced medieval and Renaissance philosophy. From the 13th century onward he was widely read especially after the invention of printing. A Senecan Renaissance was advanced with the editions of Erasmus who did much to improve the text. Seneca's reputation was further enhanced by the magnificent edition of his 'Opera' produced by the Flemish scholar Justus Lipsius and published in 1605 by the Flemish 'Officina Plantiniana' lead by Balthasar Moretus. This edition and the later ones of 1615 1632 and 1652 were adorned with elaborate title pages and portraits engraved by T. Galle and C. Galle. The worth of Lipsius' editions lies in the preface and commentary. 'His commentary while economical by modern standards was fuller than that by Erasmus. Lipsius died before he could finish his commentary on 'Quaestiones Naturales'. The first edition of Lipsius' Seneca 1605 included a commentary by M.A. Muretus d. 1585 replaced by that of Libertus Fromond in later editions. The introductory paragraphs to each section of Seneca's prose were lucid concise and often enthusiastic. 'Legite iuvenes senesque!' is a frequent exhortation typical of Lipsius' primary goal which was to teach'. Idem p. 875 'Moretus had been Lipsius' student and he was a friend of Peter Paul Rubens whom he commissioned to design for the 1615 edition and its successors a portrait of Lipsius and two full-page engravings of Seneca one of an ancient bust believed to be of Seneca and owned by the artist and the other of Seneca entering the bath in which he died. The latter engraving was related to Rubens's 1608 painting of Seneca's death which further spread the fame of Seneca as a martyr to tyranny who died true to his philosophical principles'. He resided there with great distinction as honorary Professor of History from 1579 till 1591. According to J.E. Sandys his greatest strength lies in textual criticism and exegesis. J.E. Edition prepared by Girolamo Avanzi who brought together his own commentaries on Seneca's Tragedies which initially appeared in 1507 in Venice and those of Daniel Galetanus and Bernardino Marmitae from the 1498 edition of the same Tragedies of Seneca. This professor of philosophy and philology worked in Padua he prepared several editions of ancient texts notably Catullus Ausonius. He was Aldus Manutius's assistant in preparing editions of several ancient texts. Ten tragedies by the author have come down to us two of which pose problems regarding their attribution Octavia and Hercules Oetaeus. The Trojan Women is an adaptation of Euripides' Troades. Seneca's theater contains no scenic dramaturgy or intrigue it is a theater where as in Euripides - to whom the author is very close - the word is sovereign and commands the tragic outcome. The plays thus appear as a succession of declamations where action is absent Seneca concentrating his writing on the internal tragedy of his characters after the irremediable act that precipitated them into madness thus Medea after her crimes or Hercules after his infanticide. ‎1965 French Canadian Manuscript Letter Discussing Anglo-Canadian Historical Nonfiction from Séraphin Marion‎

On offer is a letter handwritten and signed from French Canadian professor historian and literary critic Séraphin Marion 1896-1983 to Canadian historian writer and editor William Stewart Wallace 1884-1970. This three page long manuscript letter contains outstanding content. Marion - who is obviously hugely respectful of Wallace - is contacting him to ask him for his elaboration and to understand the perspective of a comment Wallace made in one of the paragraphs of his 1927 book The Growth of Canadian National Feeling. Marion opens the letter by updating Wallace on his own situation. He was recently ill but is now on the mend. English translation of an excerpt follows: ". I give a few lectures all around the country and I write articles.I was also elected as a member of the Education of the French Canada of Ontario in 1961 two years as a member of the executive council. They have asked me to draft or write a small study on the Federal District and Franco-Ontarians." Translated from French. Marion then discusses his reading of Anglo-Canadian historical works from his perspective as a French Canadian. English translation of an excerpt follows: ".I tasked myself with reading a great number of works/drafts from Anglo Canadians on the history of Canada.I have read almost all of the books from Lower Brown Burt Brebner Morton Underhill Massey Trotter Creighton Mc Innis Stanley Ryerson Dafoe Chester Martin etc. – needless to say yours are the best my dear Wallace." Translated from French. Marion then engages Wallace in a discussion about his book The Growth of Canadian National Feeling. Marion will include thoughts from this book in his talk to Educational Association the following week. English translation of an excerpt follows: ".I have suddenly remembered.a very important paragraph from Wallace's book.I quickly without delay immersed myself in the text.I would like you to give an element of justice and to make an issue- after almost 40 years." Translated from French. This letter is a very interesting and important historical letter on the Francophones outside of Quebec. BIO NOTES: Séraphin Marion was a Canadian professor historian and literary critic. He was born in Ottawa on November 25 1896. He was a vocal advocate of francophone rights outside Quebec. Marion graduated from the University of Ottawa with a BA in 1918 and MA in 1922. After receiving his doctorate from the Université de Paris he taught French at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston Ontario 1920-1923. From 1926 to 1954 he taught French and French-Canadian literature at the University of Ottawa later being named professor emeritus. He authored 20 studies including a nine-volume collection entitled Les Lettres canadiennes d’autrefois published between 1939 and 1958. He served as head translator and later as director of historical publications at the Public Archives of Canada 1923-1953. He was a member of the Royal Society of Canada 1934 the Académie canadienne-française and the Société des Dix 1962. Séraphin Marion died in Ottawa on November 29 1983. The Séraphin Marion primary school in Ottawa Ontario and Séraphin Marion street on the University of Ottawa campus were named in his honour. The Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal awards the Prix Séraphin-Marion annually. Source: Wikipedia. W.
