SHLOMO [a JEWISH LEGION MEMBER]
1919 SUPERB SIGNIFICANT ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LETTER HAND WRITTEN BY A YOUNG JEWISH LEGION MEMBER LIKELY FROM HOLLAND DETAILING THE ASPIRATIONS AND FRUSTRATIONS OF A ZIONIST ASSIGNED TO ONE OF THE MOST UNSETTLED AND CONFLICTED POST WWI AREAS ON EARTH
DAMASCUS PRE SYRIA POST OTTOMAN EMPIRE. Fair. 1919. On offer is a powerful poignant letter written by an early Zionist and volunteer of the Jewish Legion in Damascus immediately after the end of WW1. The letter contains 2 double-sided sheets measuring 9' x 5.8' and an envelope measuring 5.9' x 4.9'. The envelope has no inscriptions or stamps except a round sticker with bookseller's name - "Coles" the sheets are yellowed and torn in half at folds but it does not affect the text which is perfectly legible. The letter is written in Hebrew addressed to Shimon and signed by Shlomo Solomon. It seems from the context that they are very close friends. The first page bears the date and place: Damascus August 20 1919. It is also clear that the author was a Dutch Jew who had lived in Eretz Israel for some time before joining the military. Based on the date when he joined the army summer 1918 and other context it can be said with high level of certainty that he was a member of the Jewish Legion. The Jewish Legion was the name of 39th through 42nd Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers in the British Army that were formed of Jewish volunteers. The formation of a Jewish Regiment was initiative of Zeev Jabotinsky and Joseph Trumpeldor promoted by John Henry Patterson. Among its members were also David Ben-Gurion Dov Hoz Yitzhak Ben-Zvi Yakov Drori Levi Eshkol and other famous Zionist leaders many later became members of Haganah and laid the foundation of the Israel Defence Army. The initial unit Zion Mule Corps was formed in 1914 - 1915 in August 1917 formation of a Jewish regiment was officially announced in spring and summer 1918 volunteers from Palestine joined 39th and 40th Battalions and started service. That's exactly when the author volunteered: "My Dear Shimon some time ago I received your last letter probably the first one that you wrote to me in Hebrew and now I have a little more time and will answer to you when I am calm also in Hebrew - now I have been a soldier for over a year but what we hoped for when we volunteered for the Army was not realized.". There is something deeply moving in this letter full of thoughts about the future of Israel: "Until there is Jewish Army in the full sense of the word probably a long time must pass. This moment has not come yet. Unfortunately that's what we feel deep in our hearts. But anyway these times have been times of very important and interesting experiments and in this sense this time --- has not been lost" p.1; ".it is not possible yet to breathe freely much is still missing we can only hope that soon . the way out of the darkness the uncertainty where we are now will become clear that it will be possible to start large great fruitful work the giant work requiring all our spiritual and physical efforts without a second thought of each and each of us . to achieve our supreme goal our people living in the Land of Israel - happy people in fertile land" p.2. He has acute interest in current affairs of the Zionist movement writing about the convention of the Va'ad HaPoel HaZioni The Action Committee that was convening in London in the last week of August. The purpose of the congress was to work out principles of the Zionist movement in the era after the WW1 and the Balfour Declaration: ".Only when all great difficulties will be defeated when the situation is settled. This is our heart hope! . the convention that will be now in London will contribute to clearing up the situation. Is this convention a sort of a congress of representatives from all countries also from Germany and Austria Otherwise it is not a general convention and it will not have any authority to make declarations in the name of all Zionism". He is particularly interested in developments in Zionist movement in Holland mentioning names of some noted Dutch Zionists. He writes about his mood and frustrations from the army service and mentions his family: "I want for once to live like a human being because life in the army is not life at the end. ---. I have been sent to work at different army offices and now I am in Damascus. It is interesting to see some of the world this way but that is not what I have volunteered to the Hebrew army for. But what to do ----. And I do not think that I will be able to get back to life until the next summer. I also wanted to go and see the mother and everyone and breathe a little different air after a while." He asks Shimon about his plans to come: "What do you think about coming to Israel And what do they think about your preparations . I have not seen any Dutch that came to Israel so far. Neither De Haan nor Van Friesland nor . I hope now to be near Jaffa and Jerusalem. What about the other that you wrote would come here". De Haan was a Dutch Jewish writer and journalist who became interested in Judaism and Zionism he actually moved to Israel the same year later became close with Orthodox community and get into conflict with secular Zionists 5 years later he was killed by Haganah members for his anti-Zionist activity. In the letter Shlomo also asks about his letters published by Handelsblad the most important daily newspaper in Holland. Shoulders Established Sri'S Microelectronics Program.Early In His Career At Sri Shoulders Made The First 12 Quadrupole Mass Spectrometers And Then Later Worked With Others Such As Mouse Inventor Douglas Engelbart And Jerre Noe. During His Time At Sri Shoulders Also Worked On Ideas For A Flying Car The Gyrodyne Convertiplane. In 1963 Shoulders Asked The California State Senate'S Transportation Committee For Permission To Use His Invention On Public Roads And In 1964 They Agreed. However A Number Of Nearby Municipalities Banned The Convertiplane From Their Airspace. Unable To Get The Flying Car Off The Ground Shoulders Created His Own Company Vertitek And Began Developing Remote-Controlled Drones. He Imagined A Wide Variety Of Drone Applications From Children's Toys To Agricultural Crop Dusters. One Example The Boomerang Sent Out Sound Waves To Detect And Avoid Collisions And Looked Like Giant Maple Seed. This British nobleman took the family's ancient but decrepit manse and built the magnificent castle known as Alton Towers that stands today; well known as the lay leader of English Catholicism in his day his philanthropic pursuits included constructing a monastery church and schools and earned him the nickname "Good Earl John." Large bold signature in brown ink 2 3/4" X 1 3/4" tipped to 4½" X 7" album leaf n.p. n.y. Very good. Slight age toning. Below this clipped signature is tipped another slip 3" X 2½" on which is penned in minute 19th century script: "The autograph of John Talbot is the Earl of Shrewsbury the great book collector -- it is genuine & I got it from a person who purchased it in a copy of Wordsworth at the Alton Towers Sale of his library" signed "Hahnhaus." Christie & Mason auctioned off most of the Alton Towers household treasures in July and August of 1857 including a large library. unknown

Kennedy's brother-in-law husband of Eunice Kennedy was an attorney politician and activist who served in both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations; he's considered the founder and served as first director of the Peace Corps 1961-66 later also directing the Office of Economic Opportunity 1964-68 and serving as U.S. Ambassador to France 1968-70. TLS 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC 24 May 1965. Addressed to Kenneth M. Anglemire. Near fine. On "Office of Economic Opportunity" letterhead Shriver thanks the president of "Who's Who in America" in Chicago for asking him to take part in "Illinois Day" at the New York World's Fair but regrets that "I shall be testifying before Congress that day and therefore shall be unable to come to New York." Lao She Was Born Shu Qingchun In 1899 In Beijing To A Poor Manchu Family Of The Sumuru Clan Belonging To The Plain Red Banner. His Father Died In A Street Battle With The European Eight-Nation Alliance Forces In The Course Of The Boxer Rebellion Events In 1901. "During My Childhood" Lao She Later Recalled "I Didn't Need To Hear Stories About Evil Ogres Eating Children And So Forth; The Foreign Devils My Mother Told Me About Were More Barbaric And Cruel Than Any Fairy Tale Ogre With A Huge Mouth And Great Fangs. And Fairy Tales Are Only Fairy Tales Whereas My Mother's Stories Were 100 Percent Factual And They Directly Affected Our Whole Family." In 1913 He Was Accepted To Beijing Normal University From Which He Graduated In 1918. Between 1918 And 1924 Lao She Was Involved As Administrator And Faculty Member At A Number Of Primary And Secondary Schools. He Was Highly Influenced By The May Fourth Movement 1919 Which " Gave Me A New Spirit And A New Literary Language. I Am Grateful To The May Fourth Movement As It Allowed Me To Become A Writer." He Went On To Serve As Lecturer In The Chinese Section Of The School Of Oriental Studies At The University Of London From 1924 To 1929. During His Time In London He Absorbed A Great Deal Of English Literature Especially Dickens Whom He Adored And Began His Own Writing. In The Summer Of 1929 He Left Britain For Singapore Teaching At The Chinese High School. Between His Return To China In The Spring Of 1930 Until 1937 He Taught At Several Universities Including Cheeloo University And Shandong University Qingdao. Lao She Was A Major Popularizer Of Humor Writing In China Especially Through His Novels His Short Stories And Essays For Journals Like Lin Yutang's The Analects Fortnightly Lunyu Banyuekan Est. 1932 And His Stage Plays And Other Performing Arts Notably Xiangsheng.On 27 March 1938 The All-China Resistance Association Of Writers And Artists Was Established With Lao She As Its Leader. The Purpose Of This Organization Was To Unite Cultural Workers Against The Japanese And Lao She Was A Respected Novelist Who Had Remained Neutral During The Ideological Discussions Between Various Literary Groups In The Preceding Years. In March 1946 Lao She Travelled To The United States On A Two-Year Cultural Grant Lecturing And Overseeing The Translation Of Several Of His Novels. He Stayed In The Us From 1946 Until December 1949. During Lao She's Traveling His Friend Pearl S. Buck And Her Husband Had Served As Sponsors And They Helped Lao She Live In The U.S. After The People's Republic Of China Was Established Lao She Rejected Buck's Advice To Stay In America And Came Back To China. Rickshaw Boy Was Translated By Buck In The Early 1940'S. Lao She Was Married To Painter Hu Jieqing; Together They Had A Son And Three Daughters. During The Cultural Revolution He Was Condemned As A Counterrevolutionary Paraded By The Red Guards Through The Streets And Beaten Publicly At The Door Steps Of The Temple Of Confucius In Beijing. According To The Official Record This Abuse Left Lao She Greatly Humiliated Both Mentally And Physically And He Committed Suicide By Drowning Himself In Beijing's Taiping Lake On 24 August 1966. His Relatives Were Accused Of Implication In His "Crimes" But Rescued His Manuscripts After His Death Hiding Them In Coal Piles And A Chimney And Moving Them From House To House. DIJON FRANCE FR. Very Good. 1945. On offer is the 1945 Come-Back Diary of the 602 Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion detailing the few months of the battalions involvement in World War II. The document is an incredibly unique and interesting piece of World War II memorabilia. As well each and every newsletter in the collection was written or compiled by Sidney Bernstein one of the most famous music promoters of the 1960s and the man who booked the Beatles among many other in their first tour of America and helped jump start the British Invasion in the mid-1960s. The Come-Back Diary contains within it all the volumes of the 602nd AAA Gun Battalion daily newsletter published between April 1945 and October 1945. Bernstein and the 602 AAA Gun Battalion are stationed in Dijon France for the entirety of the newsletters production The first issue of the first volume April 11 1945 has the headline Your 3 Minutes Gazette Goes To Press!! and feature short paragraphs under the titles Feature Story Music Dept. Your Daily Comic Strip Gossip Column Editorial War News and Tonites Movie. Other sections featured throughout the seven month run include Afterthoughts Religious Services Notes from a G.I.s notebook Letter of the Day Sports Personalities Predictions Sinatra what is the strange phenomena called Frank Sinatra and many many more. As the issues progress the newsletter takes on a more conversational tone dealing less with the events coming up than with the general feelings and daily life in Dijon in the waning months of the War as well as including more personal thoughts from Bernstein himself. For example: Vol. 2 No. 13 June 26 1945. Brother is hot.He cusses and cusses and cusses - The Sun-baked tents - the dirty sons of the Rising Sun - the Sun itself.but then he remembers - an intensely cold winter night on guard in Germany - reports on the hot loop Nazi paratroopers dropping all around - his fingers almost froze to his M1 that long long night and how he prayed that hed see the sun once more.The guys stops cursing.peels off his OD shirt and strips to the waist leaves his tent for a slug of water.smiles at the sun.and goes to work on the Tuesday edition. In total the newspaper is filled with items and tidbits from back home in the U.S. entertainment and lifestyle information for the serviceman of the Six-Oh-Second. Bernstein is a very competent and very enjoyable writer throughout and does an exceptional job of conveying emotion wit and the experience of daily life as a soldier in the Dijon. Days of heightened emotion such as FDRs death Hitlers death VE day VJ day the opening of Bernsteins GI Nite Club and many others in the last year of the war are especially interesting. Bernstein is an incredibly adept and interesting writer and these days show off his talent especially well. The newsletters continue until September 24 1945. There is one later newsletter included in the collection from October 13th. This is on the first page of the compilation and does an excellent job of setting the scene of the post WW2 landscape as well as Bernsteins feelings of writing the newsletter during the war. It is one of the most interesting newsletters in the collection account for roughly 85 pages. Each page seemed to be set and printed by Sidney Bernstein himself. The pages are in good shape showing occasional rips and tears but very little other than that. Some pages have smudging of the ink but nothing to affect the legibility of the content. The cover is a simple brown paper. It seems the front cover used to say 602 AAA COMEBACK DIARY with a drawing of what looks to be the Statue of Liberty however the drawing and letters have faded almost completely and are very difficult to make out. There is no spine and the book is bound by thread. This would make an absolutely amazing document of World War II history as it presents a nuanced and comprehensive picture of the life of servicemen in Dijon as the War came to end. As well this would be great for anyone interested in the incredible life of Sid Bernstein before he helped change the world of music forever. The strange thing about death is that life still goes on men are painting others guarding prisoners rations billets motor pool the Colonel on his daily inspection to the Major continues with his daily conferences more men liberated from the hell that is Germany the whole works the whole world continues with their jobs for that is the way he wanted it. On offer are a fascinating pair 2 of original 1941 and 1945 manuscript World War II diaries handwritten by a young Jewish man Sidney Schulman from Altoona Pennsylvania. Born May 25th 1923 he would be a mere 17 years old at the start of the first diary. Sidney is an erudite writer and certainly has a lot of pizzazz but what makes this pair of diaries significant to even the casual reader we witness this high school boy become this barely freshman at Pennsylvania State College as he is just graduating from high school and in the fall he heads to college and then in the fall of 1942 he enlists in the Army Air Force and serves as a B-29 Gunner until the war is over. From boy to man from car dates in America to looking for action in the red light districts of Asia as Sidney details a fair bit in 1945 of his service while stationed in the heart of China. One cannot fail to be impressed seeing this young college student grow into a fighting man in the span of the two diaries. Here are some snippets: 1941 "January 9th School uneventful. Same old routine. Talked to Bill for ½ hr on plane about _____. Don't know whether doing things right. Have to have real show down with her a lot but Time will tell. Am really in a bag. Light marginal spotting not touching image otherwise in very fresh fine condition. An engraving from the Description de l'Egypte one of the masterpieces of French printing and the birth of a new field: Egyptology. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799 the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates of which 72 colored as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The Egyptian campaign' militarily a disaster demonstrates through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte Egyptian Institute who followed Napoleon's army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge the chemist Berthollet the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists engineers architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants.This edition the so-called Imperial edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats two of which were specially created for it and christened Moyen-Egypte and Grand-Egypte. A special press was built to print it the process extending over 20 years from 1809 to 1829. The Imperial edition proved so popular that a second edition this time in black and white and without the Egypte ancienne et moderne watermark known as the Royal Edition was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke Paris.The engravings of the Description d'Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon illustrator diplomat collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon the Louvre. His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L'Egypte.Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51 reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. Along with the members of the Institut d'Egypte the Natural History Museum's painter H.J. Redouté brother of Pierre-Joseph Redouté author of Roses the mineralogist Dolomiue and the draughtsman Joly Denon then explored the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt. When however he joined the 21st Light Infantry Regiment as it marched across Upper Egypt in pursuit of the retreating Mameluks in November 1798 he found himself the only civilian. In the very midst of the battle itself he reeled off sketches of the works of art that peppered his path right up to the threshold of the Sudan.
