‎1858-63. Rare collection of American Civil War era letters written by American business magnate J. K. Smythe concerning business between Europe and America during the initial years of the war. Quarto bound into two volumes in half-cloth over pebbled boards by Auguste Bellance of Paris with marbled endpapers and a paper title label with Smythe's signature affixed to the front panel of the first volume. Written by Smythe in Paris between 1858 and 1863 the collection includes several early letters regarding the sale and purchase of lots in New York City including proposals by Smythe to sell his lots in Harlem bordering Central Park and to purchase property on Broadway and in Manheim in addition to a letter concerning a house being built for Smythe in New York by architect Calvert Vaux who had just designed Central Park with Frederick Law Olmsted. Beginning in 1861 the letters contain several comments regarding the excitement in the state of the Union at the outbreak of the American Civil War including a letter dated May 1961 which reads in part "You of course get the news of the intense excitement in all the northern States in regard to the War they are inaugurating to put down rebellion - Persons who came over by the last Steamer say the excitement and Patriotism of the people can hardly be described. The Americans here are also very much excited." In very good condition. A fascinating collection. hardcover‎

He Spent Some Time Teaching Classics In Susan Blow's Kindergarten Training School. An Acrimonious Parting Of The Ways Resulted From Blow's Disapproval Of His Independence And Enthusiasm For Pagan Cultures. From 1884-97 Snider Wrote And Lectured Touring Extensively Mainly In The Midwest Including Speeches To The Grand Rapids Kindergarten Training School. According To The Dictionary Of American Biography Snider Would Move "Impetuously About The Stage Checking His Flow Of Eloquence Only To Chide Severely The Late-Comers." To Avoid The Commercialization Of His Work He Published His Writings Himself At His Own Expense Under The Imprint Of His Sigma Publishing Company. He Made Little If Any Money From The More Than Forty Volumes He Published And Often Gave Away Copies To People Attending His Lectures Who Wanted To Read Them. Snider's Earlier Works Many Of Them In Verse Deal With Greece And Rome A Walk In Hellas Homer In Chios Prorsus Retrorsus Agamemnon's Daughter. Between 1877 And 1897 He Produced Nine Volumes Of Commentary On "The Four Literary Bibles Of The Occident"-Shakespeare's Plays Goethe's Faust Homer's Works And Dante's Divine Comedy. ‎Bowling Green Ohio OH. Good. 1938. This is one of the most fascinating diaries. Charles Snyder is a young intelligent perhaps brilliant and certainly obsessive man from Bryan and Bowling Green Ohio. The diary proper once a standard "Everyday" brand diary about an inch thick is expanded to over 4.5 inches being over-stuffed with ephemera. Charles was very studious in saving and storing his world in paper form - newspaper clippings letters receipts documents postcards photos etc. etc. fill this book on top of the pages and pages of his writings. Charles was at the beginning of 1938 still a senior in high school and by the fall he was a freshman at college. Further information in a letter by the Principal of the college to Air Force recruitment in 1941 recommending him for air force duty is further evidence he is in his late teens at the time. This is one of the most astounding diaries we have ever seen for the breadth of information Mr. Snyder delivers in detailing his life at school among friends and his views of the world arounds fleshed out all the more with the many hundreds of inclusions from his friends family teachers and his of course his own. Hard to place a condition to this book as it has morphed into something differents. It is however all legible and intact and overall we suggest Good. There are 110 woodcuts in the text 10 smaller mounted folding plates and 9 larger mounted folding plates. His Scientific Work Includes The Proposal Of A Unified Field Theory That Brings Together The Weak Force Strong Force Electromagnetism And Gravity. Sachs Earned His Bachelors At The University Of California Los Angeles He Then Moved To Columbia University New York For Postgraduate Study. While At Columbia Sachs Was Taught By Willis Lamb And Hideki Yukawa.5 Yukawa Had Agreed To Be Sach's Thesis Advisor But Sachs Decided To Complete His Doctorate Back At Ucla. Following The Award Of His Phd In 1954 Sachs First Post-Doctoral Position Was At The New University Of California Radiation Laboratory At Both Berkeley And Livermore Which Was Run By Edward Teller And Ernest Lawrence And Was Also Home To Bryce Dewitt Who Sachs Would Later Co-Author Articles With In Physics Today. In 1956 Sachs Became A Senior Scientist At Lockheed Missiles And Space Laboratory While At Lockheed Sachs Began Developing With Solomon Schwebel A Field Theory Of Quantum Electrodynamics That Included Broken Symmetries That Did Not Require Recourse To Renormalization Or Perturbation Techniques - The "Schwebel-Sachs" Model. In 1961 He Became A Research Professor At Mcgill University; This Was Followed By A Post As Associate Professor Of Physics At Boston University 1962-1966. In 1964 While At Boston University Sachs Received An Invitation From Paul Dirac To Visit Cambridge University. Sachs Stayed In England For Three Months Where His Wife Yetty Had Family. Sachs Worked With Paul Dirac At The Department Of Applied Mathematics And Theoretical Physics Cambridge University. While Working With Dirac Sachs Also Had The Opportunity To Discuss Ideas With John G. Taylor John Polkinghorne And Graduate Students At Damtp. In 1965 Sachs Had Had A Breakthrough While At The Aspen Physics Institute Colorado. Sachs Was Able To Derive A Result For A Unified Field Theory If Quantum Mechanics Was Considered To Be A Linear Approximation For A Field Theory Of Inertia Expressed In General Relativity. Sachs Argued That The Work Of Albert Einstein And Erwin Schrödinger In General Relativity Did Not Yet Take Account Of The Inertia Of Matter Which Required Consideration Of The Mach Principle. In The Summer Of 1966 Abdus Salam Invited Sachs To Spend A Few Months At The International Centre For Theoretical Physics In Trieste Italy.
