Declines invitation to attend "the dinner party honoring Allan Nevins on Friday evening October 13th. I wish I could accept for I am sure it will be a delightful occasion. Unhappily my schedule is such that I am not free to go to Chicago that evening." Boldly signed in full in black ink. The occasion for this party was likely the publication of Nevins' 2-volume "The Emergence of Lincoln" part of his larger 8-volume "Ordeal of the Union" series. unknown

This Revolutionary War patriot acted on Washington's behalf to secure large lots of land in the District of Columbia area before the center of government was formally established there then served as the first secretary of the navy 1798-1801. ALS 1p 7 3/4" X 10½" n.p. n.y. Addressed to JOHN TEMPLEMAN a Georgetown merchant associated with Stoddert in various land enterprises. Very good. Mildly age toned with binding traces down left edge not affecting text. Interesting if cryptic details on some Georgetown real estate dealings in Stoddert's usual difficult script reading in part: "Col Burrows has commenced 3 Houses on two lots which Scot will not transfer without a person to get two lots already divided to him in the sale square. these are No. 9 & 10. Pray then send an order to Forrest to transfer to Scot these two lots. As for the rest -- I believe the business is not to be settled without a Law suit -- a Law suit which will not end during the lives of the Parties who commence it." One Stoddert letter to Templeman in the federal archives concerns different investors interested in Georgetown real estate; though undated it likely dates from late 1804 -- which time period is also likely for this letter which is otherwise dated simply "Friday morning." Octavo original illustrated wrappers signed by all 8 astronauts on the front panel. In near fine condition. Rare and desirable signed by these astronauts. With their crewmate Neil Armstrong Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins made the first crewed landing on the surface on the Moon on the 1969 Apollo 11 mission. Selected as part of NASA's third group of 14 astronauts in 1963 Collins flew in space twice. His first spaceflight was on Gemini 10 in 1966 in which he and Command Pilot John Young performed orbital rendezvous with two spacecraft and undertook two extravehicular activities EVAs also known as spacewalks. On the 1969 Apollo 11 mission he became one of 24 people to fly to the Moon which he orbited thirty times. Aldrin made three spacewalks as pilot of the 1966 Gemini 12 mission and as the lunar module pilot on the 1969 Apollo 11 mission he and mission commander Neil Armstrong were the first two people to land on the Moon. "Who's Who in America" questionnaire filled out entirely in Stone's hand starting with full name occupation address birthdate and going into education marital status professional associations clubs etc. Most printed questions bear brief responses and a few namely military record and list of books written did not apply and were left blank. Truly unique a fascinating and exceptionally early biographical record by the future chief justice. Accompanied by a striking 6" X 8" steel engraving of Stone. Fine. unknown

Laid in is Piehl's handwritten note giving the holograph changes which Field made in Copy No. 1 which Field had presented to Francis Wilson. Not only was the the first hardcover book published by Stone & Kimball Kramer 2a it was the first published bibliography of first editions of only American authors - thus a milestone in American first editions collecting. Small octavo illustrated with one folding engraved plate a little foxed around the margins and with a corner creased pp 96 some foxing but otherwise firm throughout the verso of the title pages has an early stamp of an Austrian library also with the perforated stamp of the John Crerar library and its tiny withdrawn stamp an early signature on the title page with the attractive bookpate of the Crerar Library on the front endpaper the free front endpaper nearly detached. red quarter morocco and marbled boards rubbed . Anton von Storck 1731 - 1803 was an Austrian physician. Storck is remembered for his clinical research of various herbs and their associated toxicity and medicinal properties. His studies are considered to be the pioneering work of experimental pharmacology and his method can be regarded as forming a blueprint for the clinical trials of modern medicine. He was convinced that plants regarded as poisonous still had medicinal applications if employed in carefully controlled quantities. Störck was particularly interested in the medical possibilities of plants such as hemlock henbane jimsonweed and autumn crocus. His experiments with these plants involved a three-step process; initially used on animals followed by a personal trial and finally given to his patients all the while maintaining a "sliding-scale" approach to determine the optimum dosage. Störck's numerous Latin medical tracts detailing his experiments into the therapeutic effects of poisonous plants excited great interest and were translated into German French English Dutch and Portuguese rapidly becoming influential medical texts throughout Europe.
