After this a small section with the prefaces to Suetonius by Politianus and Casaubon and Vossius' article on Suetonius from 'De historicis Latinis'. This edition became with her numerous reissues and revisions the foundation for the widespread study of Suetonius in the Netherlands and in England and in the next 18th century the scholarly interest in Suetonius has been greater than ever before or since. This edition of 1691 is the first reissue and contains the entire commentaries of Torrentius Casaubon with the notes of the Dutch scholar Theodorus Marcilius Arnheimensis and Jacobus Gronovius and the Portugese humanist Achilles Statius or Aquiles Estaço. § Gibbon praised Suetonius for his strict dedication to historical truth. He was professor of Eloquence at Duisburg from 1657 at Deventer and from 1661 at Utrecht where he lived and worked for the last 40 years of his life. He limited his attention mainly to writers of Latin prose Cicero Suetonius Caesar Justinus Florus. This scholar of international stature is remembered for his 'Inscriptiones antiquae' long time a standard edition. It offers a 'textus receptus' which is widely accepted accompanied with the commentary and the annotations of various specialists taken or excerpted from earlier useful normative or renewing editions. Editions like these 'cum notis Variorum' were useful but never broke new ground. Their production was the specialty of Dutch scholars of the 17th and 18th century. § The Dutch latinist Petrus Burmannus based his edition on that of Graevius of 1672. It contains the complete notes of the best commentators such as Egnatius Glareanus Torrentius Casaubon and Gruter and selections and excerpts from others. Burmannus added also many excellent notes of his own. Petrus Burmannus 1668-1741 was professor of Latin at the University of Utrecht from 1696 and at Leiden from 1715. As an editor Burmannus was an industrious manufacturer of 'Variorum' Editions. He confined himself to the Latin classics. He edited Phaedrus Horace Claudian Ovid Lucan and the Poetae Latini Minores Petronius Quintilian and Suetonius. His editor Samuel Pitiscus Samuel Petiski 1636-1727 a Dutch classicist of German origin was rector at Zutphen and from 1685 of the Gymnasium Hieronymianum at Utrecht. He produced editions of Curtius Rufus 1685 Suetonius 1690 Aurelius Victor 1696 and Solinus 1689. He did also lexicographic work and published a 'Lexicon Latino-Belgicum' 1725. He produced also in 1713 a 'Lexicon Antiquitatum Romanarum' and an edition in 1730 of Pomey's 'Pantheum Mythicum'. In this Suetonius edition Pitiscus also accepted some Lives nowadays ascribed to Suetonius a 'Vita Juvenalis' 'Vita Persii' and 'Vita Plinii'. At the end we find also the fragments of Suetonius followed by 17 pages with inscriptions concerning the 'Lives of the XII Caesars' and an edition of the 'Monumentum Ancyranum' with the learned commentary of Lipsius and Casaubon. Pitiscus was not a great scholar but he skillfully excerpted compared and contrasted his sources. His editions of Roman historians offer the 'textus receptus' accompanied with the commentary and the annotations of specialists taken from earlier useful normative or renewing editions. Nevertheless he added much useful observations of his own. Dibdin is very positive the edition is he says 'adorned with a vast number of beautiful cuts which not only illustrate Suetonius's history but likewise give a great light to the Roman antiquities. The same antiquities are also farther explained by Pitiscus's learned perpetual commentary on Suetonius and extracts of nearly 900 ancient and modern authors which he has collected for that purpose'. Or Moss: 'This is a very excellent and valuable edition in which the industry as well as the learning of the editor has been fully displayed'. Ernesti is less positive about the ungrateful task which this hardworking schoolmaster has fullfilled: 'nihil est praeter compilationes superiorum commentariorum Lexicorum item et aliorum librorum de rebus antiquariis'. It is just how you look at it. However this industry paid off. When he died Pitiscus left the fortune of 10.000 guilders for the poor of Utrecht. He compared inter se comparatis he goes on the text of these three editions and concludes that the best text to follow is of course that of Oudendorp of 1751 Oudendorpiam omnium accuratissime textum constitutum habere. Einhard wrote a biography of Charlemagne along the lines of a Life of Suetonius. From the Renaissance onward he was neglected until the edition of the French scholar Isaac Casaubon Geneva 1595 who did pioneering work on the text of Suetonius. The great edition of 1672 of the Dutch scholar J.G. Graevius and its later revisions became the foundation for the widespread interest and study of Suetonius in the 18th century. Important for the reception of Suetonius is the article that the French philosopher Pierre Bayle wrote about him in his 'Dictionnaire Historique et Critique'. 'Bayle adopted a view of Suetonius that became commonplace in subsequent decades. He presented Suetonius as a model of candor sincerity and impartiality. Suetonius reports without judgment he tells what he knows without fear and he flatters no one'. G.W. Bowersock 'From Gibbon to Auden: Essays on the Classical Tradition' Oxford 2009 p. 55 § The English historian Gibbon also praised the Roman historian for his strict dedication to historical truth and for composing the 'Lives' truthfully without or prejudice. This view of Suetonius was also dominant in 18th century France. Apart from the scholarly works two translations appeared in that century one made by De la Harpe in 1770 and one in 1771 translated under the pseudonym Henri Ophellot de la Pause an alias of the writer and philosopher of the Enlightenment Jean-Baptiste-Claude Delisle de Sales 1741-1816. He is best known for his 'De la Philosophie de la Nature' of 1770 which caused a scandal for professing atheism. 'Beginning in 1776 a faction in the French court began a campaign against De Sales as a way of attacking the French philosophical movement more generally. Voltaire championed his defense but De Sales was imprisoned in March 1777 for publishing a book deemed to be anti-royalist an event that brought his works out of obscurity'. Autograph Letter Signed
This prominent Boston businessman and partner in the import/export firm Sullivan and Barbour may have been the son of the Revolutionary War general John Sullivan according to some sources though other evidence suggests not; he was also secretary of the United States Land Company and other similar concerns; his wife Marian Dix 1802-60 was sister of General John A. Dix and a noted composer best known for her hit song "The Blue Juniata"; together the Sullivans were well-known Boston socialites. ALS 1p integral address leaf 7 3/4" X 9 3/4" Washington DC 1865 March 13. Addressed to Brigadier General Edward A. Wild 1825-91 commander of the famed black infantry brigade popularly known as "Wild's African Brigade." Near fine. Wild married Sullivan's daughter Frances Ellen in 1855. Sullivan writes to his son-in-law in part: "I commend to your acquaintance & regard my friend Geo. May Powell Esq of the Internal Revenue Department; who is the son of an excellent and lamented friend of mine. Mr P. has attracted attention and favor in the highest quarters by his very able writings upon finance & taxation -- and for his superior genius as an inventor of note and his many excellencies as a gentleman a christian." Powell 1835-1905 was a statistician with the U.S. Treasury Department during the Civil War after which he became a noted social reformer philanthropist publisher "Bible geographer" involving his travels through Egypt and Palestine and inventor. An intriguing item from this Boston noteworthy to his famed son-in-law regarding a renowned Renaissance man of the day. Interestingly Sullivan writes just after the end of the Civil War and about one month after Abraham Lincoln's famed visit to Richmond shortly before his assassination -- Wild's men were among those troops who witnessed this event. Since this letter was given to Powell who could have read it rather than sent my mail it's not cancelled it's formal with the father-in-law addressing his son-in-law as "My dear General.". unknown

Hieronymus translated the 'Chronicon' or 'Chronicle' Pantodapê historia / Universal history of Eusebius bishop of Caesarea to which he added a continuation of his own up to 378 A.D. And the monk Tyrannius Rufinus translated Eusebius' 'Church History' Ekklêsiastikê historia. It was published in 402 or 403 and continued the work from the reign of Constantine the Great to the death of Theodosius 395. It was published in 402 or 403. The first independant Church History in the West was written by Sulpicius Severus ca. 363-420 an eminent Latin-Christian historian originating from South-West Gaul. His 'Sacrae Historiae' or 'Chronica' appeared in 402. The 'Sacrae Historiae' or in Dutch 'Kerkelyke Historie' tells the 'sacred history' from Adam till ca. 400 A.D. This is the first and up till now the only complete Dutch translation. Sulpicius is not only translated but also 'met opmerkingen opgeheldert' i.e. elucidated with notes. In them the translator Pieter Rabus criticizes Severus. The notes usually occupy more than half a page. Pieter Rabus 1660-1702 was a famous man of letters in his days. He also translated Erasmus. As an enlightened author and journalist he wrote against superstition and intolerance. In 1686 he became 'Praeceptor' of the Erasmianum in Rotterdam. After 'Kerkelyke Historie' of Sulpicius follows a translation of the continuation of the 'Chronica' by Johannes Sleidanus 1507-1556 'De quattuor summis imperiis'. This part comprises the last 110 pages and deals with the history of the church during the Middle Ages. After the Continuatio follow three letters on Saint Martin's miracles and death and three dialogues of Sulpicius Severus which compare Saint Martin's feats and virtues with those of the Egyptian hermits. § This Sulpicius edition is a line by line reissue of the Elzevier edition of 1643. He appears in the 1871 Census aged 44 a Church of England Clergyman living with his wife Gertrude aged 34 in Offley Hertfordshire with three servants. Gertrude was born in St Kitts West Indies and her maiden name was Gertrude Maria Grace Payne daughter of Charles Gillies Payne and Mary Elizabeth Salusbury. William died in 1871'. Flacius 1520-1575 who taught Hebrew in Wittenberg and the New Testament in Jena was a pupil and lifelong supporter of Luther. Flacius dedicated his book to the Polish duke Nicolaus Radziuilius who was a great patron of the Lutherans. Schoenemann p. 378 The next edition of the 'Sacrae Historiae' this edition appeared a few years later in Paris in 1560. In the 32 page 'praefatio' to this edition which is in fact a ferocious attack against Lutheranism that brought nothing but 'latrocinia furta praedationes adulteria usurae homicidia & id genus alia flagitia' p. 2 recto written by one 'Iacobus Faber doctor theologus Sorbonicus' we are told that he Faber published this work to strengthen the spirit of the Catholics against the heresy of the Reformation that was raging through Europe and especially Germany. p. 3 recto Faber suggests that he found and edited the text of the 'Sacrae Historiae' himself. Anti-Slavery Manual Containing a Collection of Facts and Arguments on American Slavery 1837 is a foundational document of the American abolitionist movement written by the Reverend La Roy Sunderland 1802-1885 a Methodist Episcopal minister and one of the most energetic and theologically grounded anti-slavery agitators of the antebellum period. Published at a moment of intense national controversy over the question of slavery the volume assembles a systematic compendium of factual evidence statistical documentation legal analysis and moral argument designed to equip abolitionists with the intellectual armament necessary to counter proslavery arguments in the public arena. 1907 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A YOUNG TOPEKA KANSAS WOMAN WITH CHARM PERSONALITY AND A KEEN OBSERVER
TOPEKA KANSAS KS. Good. 1907. Hardcover. On offer is a terrific original 1907 handwritten diary and journal of Susie C. Staples of Topeka Kansas. This book hand dated by the author has over 300 entries for the year. The diary is a wonderful bit of western Americana as it provides a detailed inner look at this mature young 28 y/o at writing woman's life is like in early 20th century Kansas and is also a super travel diary of an extended mid-western road trip. Susie worked for the Santa Fe Railway in Topeka Kansas apparently as a senior clerk working on foreign account records passenger records training other clerks etc. but she doesn't go into great detail. She is an ideal diarist starting with mention of that day's weather and a synopsis of her day and evening mentioning names of calls and visitors and local historians and collectors will find a wealth of local history and genealogy. For transportation she still used a horse & buggy but also used the electric car and many trains to get around. At one time there is an entry that their horse got scared by an auto & fell & hurt his knees quite badly - the vet was called a day or so later and said not to use him for 10 days. They played a lot of Flinch after dinner sewed shopped went to parties Church visited relatives constantly she sometimes quotes what was served for dinner it seems someone in her family was always taking a train somewhere she mentions illness redecorating of their home attending parades and other amusements and much much more. Here are some snippets: Wed. Jan 2 - .Terrible wreck on Railroad only 43 miles west of Topeka this A.M. at 5:00. 30 persons killed. One a colored porter was killed lived just back of us. Thurs. Jan 31st. Ground one glaze of ice everything covered. Started to drive down - so slippery horse could not stand up had to get out & walk down so was 20 min. late. Told Miss Fauble the reason. Sun. Feb 3rd. Coldest day so far this winter.Gas pressure so low had to all live in kitchen not very warm there. Cousin Ivy started a wood fire up in her room and we visited up there. She came with me to depot. I left Kansas City at 4:30 arrived home between 6 & 7. Thurs. Mar. 14th. A lovely day first time the sun has shown for over a week. Mattie & I asked to get off to go to depot to see Cousin Agnes. We saw Cousin Agnes & her three children Lewis Mac & Elinor & Cousin Gertrude it was quite a satisfaction to even see them & we had a nice little visit. Just think they go from Penn. to Cal. take all their meals on the train travel in a drawing room section. C. Gertrude is not much larger than Minnie not any better looking she is so wrinkled & freckled & red hair but very pleasant.Mama Aunty & C. Anna went to a tacky party at Mrs. Shorts to sew carpet rags.Clarence went to "Alice in Wonderland" home talent play. Sun. Apr. 21. .saw Marvin at church this a.m. with his girl the preachers daughter. We had a lovely little trip to KC. Mr. Freeman knew the conductor so we got to go out on the observation car.We took trolley ride out to "Electric Park" as we had to wait till 9:00 train out. Met Mr. F at the depot. Had quite a Sunday lesson on the train. One of the girls from the office was on the train she bo't a pack of cards & asked Marvin & I to play cards with her. Oh how it made my heart ache for her & what a lesson it taught me on firmness of character. Tues. July 23rd. Hot July day. Word was rec'd in Topeka that two vessels on the Pacific Coast had collided & lots of passengers were drowned. Cora & Sadie Shull were on one of the vessels & are afraid they are among the missing - everyone is talking about it. Later entry confirms they died. Tues. Oct. 1st - .Mattie & I got off work to go to Kansas City a whole crowd from the office went. Left Topeka at 5:30. Had a jolly time going down. At Lawrence Mattie & I got a seat together "skinned" a fellow out of it. Met Geo. Rogers right inside the depot.Geo. took Mattie & I to the Telephone Office where he works he showed us through the office till Parade came along. Priests of Pallas Parade was fine only not long enough. Floats representing different objects outlined in colored electric lights. After parade went uptown to Penny Arcade.Went to depot at 11:15 found our Topeka crowd there - got in a terrible push while waiting for our train. Left KC about 12:00 on a special of 16 coaches. Our crowd all got in one car together. Haskell Indian Band on our car. Had Jolly time. Train stopped at every station. After 4:00! when Mattie & reached home. We took a hack. Vacation snippets: Sun. June 2 Sunday on Train - The sunrise was beautiful. I was not slow in getting up this Sabbath morning. We washed & ate breakfast then had nothing to do but enjoy nature & oh the different scenery we did pass today. Irrigation ditches; sage brush snow covered mts. & Mts. covered with Pines. Adobe villages & lots of Mexicans. Passed through a tunnel just before we got to Raton. Matties first experience in a tunnel. Had two extra engines to help us up Raton Mt. Our 3 young men - Buttinski - Flirt & Comic - One got off at Raton one at Las Vegas - one at Albuquerque. Trinidad Raton & Albuq. depots are so odd - Adobe style. Arrived at Albuq. on time 7:45 & cousin Will met us.left our grips at Hotel walked around business part of city then took trolley out to the casino. Am ashamed to tell the rest. Took car back to depot - not train time so wrote letter home from Albuq. Harvey house then C. cousin Will suggested we go over to Hotel & get our grips. Thurs. June 6 - Saw Mts. covered with cactus & Yucca's in bloom Mtn Goats Mexican cowboys & Horses Herds of sheep. Rode by the Rio Grande river a long ways. Saw Texas State line when we crossed into Tx. Arrived at El Paso about 2 hrs. late went to union depot & washed changed waists then went up town & got dinner stopped at The Eastern Grill had a fine dinner 40 cents. All Chinamen waiters. Friday June 7th - We are living on "Shady Side of Easy St." now so did not get up very early. Went out to a near Cafe to breakfast then took Trolley & went over to Old Mexico. A treat we little tho't of having a few wks ago. It is such an odd place so many curios shops & the buildings & people so odd. No americans over there. We walked around & saw several noted bldgs. custom house Jail Famous Bull Ring Cockfighting Pit. Bo't some pottery & postals & sent home from Old Mexico to U.S.A. We were a little cautious about buying anything to bring back as they inspect you & if you have any mdse. make you pay duty on it. But many do bring over lots of costly things we were anxious to try it so Mattie bo't a silk shawl & I a Mexican drawn work doily for mama she pinned hers to her under-skirt & I put mine in my skirt pocket. We took trolley back just at the end of the international bridge the US Inspector got on car & looked very sharp at everyone & said "Have you bro't anything over" & we said "Pottery" so we landed on Uncle Sam's land unmolested. ALGONQUIN PARK ONTARIO CANADA. Very Good. 1941. On offer is a super 12 x 7 inch photo album dating back to 1941 and having pictures through 1944 of one family's car trips but mostly of one summer camper's Algonquin Park experience at Camp Tanamakoon. Originally of the Donald M. 'Bud' Sutherland family there are mentions of the Baillie family. There are approximately 75 mounted pictures and another 20 loose. Most if not all pictures are identified. Mentioned spots in central Ontario include Pickerel Lake Round and Buck Lakes Madawaska. There is one shot at the end of the album that is dated as "The Largo Choir after the June 1943 Concert". Super shot of a float plane. Most of the photos are 4 x 3 inches some a tad smaller and the odd one is 5 x 7 inches. In very nice shape but the pages have become untied and with some less fumble fingered could restore in great working order.
