Lewis a 75ish year old man he and his wife celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary! during the trip with some friends making an extended road trip from Buena Vista New York to New Mexico and stops on the way fossil hunting in 1988 through 1990. This intriguing detailed journal describes the trip intimately until the fossil excavations which becomes much more scientific. There are many excellent hand drawn illustrations of their fossil finds. Interestingly Thomas includes a pre trip diary of two pages and he discusses their sales and successes selling at flea markets. There are also extensive financial data off costs of the trip. The 10 x 7.5 inch book is completely full including the end pages save for one blank page with 95 pages. 1816 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT LETTER FROM PRIVATEER THOMAS TAYLOR SEEKING ANY INFORMATION TO BRING ABOUT THE CAPTURE OF THE MAN WHO STOLE HIS SHIP AND ROBBED HIM OF HIS TREASURE
BALTIMORE MARYLAND and DORCHESTER MASSACHUSETTS 1816. On offer is an fascinating original letter sent from Thomas Taylor a well known privateer in Baltimore during the Spanish American wars of independence in Spanish America. The letter was sent to a Mr. Steven Badlam Esq. of Dorchester Massachusetts dated July 12 1816 and signed your humble servant. It is a short account of three ships that had sunk north of Cape Ann in Massachusetts containing treasure thought to be his but instead taken by seemingly one of his men in his own ship. The letter states in broken and misspelled English that the after sunk the vessels the Prize Master Man has gone and run away with the prize from me. They were taking by one of my crusers.a schooner of six guns. Taylor is requesting any information about the man so that he can recapture the prize. This letter is a fascinating relic of a time and a profession long forgotten but one that had a profound impact on the life of those who worked and lived at sea. The stories of such men as Taylor are a vital part of Atlantic history since they demonstrate the complexity of the Atlantic experience and the inability of political borders to constrain the movement of people goods and ideas. This letter is a small but curious document in this fascinating history. The letter is four pages long with writing on 3 of the pages. The content of the letter is only on one page. The condition of the letter is good. There are a number of tears and rips along the creases and edges of the letter. They do not affect the content. There is also a good deal of discoloration throughout the pages. The handwriting is in black ink that has faded considerably but reading the handwriting is still a fairly easy task. The author of the letter is not a very adept speller so that presents some problems but other than that reading the letter is fairly easy. Sample text: Please to Direct your Letter to Philidelphia Care of Capt Sharpe Lumber Street.; Sir I take the opportunity of dropping these few lines By a Boston paper. I find there has a Spanish prize come off Cape Ann and landed north of her Largo in three fishing Smacks and after Sunk the Vessels the Prize Master man is Joseph of Sallam Salem if you can a-ford me any information.Background Note: According to David Head in his article Spanish American Privateering from the United States and the Development of Atlantic Relations Taylor was born in Wilmington Delaware and migrated to South America in his seafaring youth. When Spain's colonies began declaring independence he had become a naturalized citizen of the United Provinces and an officer in its navy. Taylor's assignment: recruit privateers in North America. Carrying a half dozen commissions Taylor landed at Annapolis in January 1816 made his way to Baltimore and began looking for a ship and like minded men to fight the Spanish American revolutions from the United States. DUMFRIES ONTARIO GALT GUELP BRANTFORD UPPER CANADA. Good. 1847. On offer is a super pre-Confederation manuscript relic of south western Upper Canada economy finance business and enterprise being an 1847 through to 1921 farm ledger handwritten by Thomas Taylor Turnbull a farmer in Dumfries Ontario Canada. The Ledger spans a long time period with entries beginning in 1847 and ending in 1921. The fep is hand stamped 'Lesslie Brothers Toronto' and within the circle of the stamp in tiny precise handwriting the book is dated '1847 Thomas Taylor Turnbull Dumfries'. Turnbull records his expenditures purchases repairs all the names of his workers who owes him and who he owes. The ledger is much more than a simple record of his farm business it reveals his lifestyle dozens of names employees work records names of people he pays for products and services and how he measures his monetary work life in shillings cords and bushels what he grew where he sold his goods his mortgage payments how he works on plastering the exterior of the school house and pays school taxes and donates to the church. He dies in 1902 and there is a page that refers to this through the Transfer of the farm to John in 1904. There is also an unusual record of how Turnbull and his wife's bodies and monument were moved in the cemetery in Komoka Ontario in 1921. There are numerous entries 1903 -1921 by his son Robert they are very interesting to compare with the early entries 1847 - 1890. The later entries mention brand names of products bought milk tickets electric film development Hamilton Spectator newspaper Presbyterian church railroad fare street car tickets etc one can immediately imagine the time shift from rural farm life to the more urban life simply be reading what was purchased. A receipt for the purchase of a phonograph in London Ontario may indicate a move to a city by Robert R.B. Turnbull. There are a few ephemeral pieces tucked in including a super broadside 'flyer' detailing a grocer's sale. In total there are 92 pages relating to 1847 - 1890 and then 24 pages 1890 -1921 for a total of 116 pages. John Hanson Genealogical Archive.
c. 1880-1885. Rare genealogical archive documenting the life and heritage of the first President of the Confederation Congress John Hanson whose biographers have argued to be the true first President of the United States. The archive is composed primarily of letters historical records and biographical documents prepared by Hanson's ancestors most notably several biographical volumes composed by his descendant Douglas H. Thomas who in his numerous biographical papers promoted Hanson as the the true first President of the United States. Contents also include biographical accounts of Hanson's father Philip Thomas and his descendant John Hanson Thomas who served in the American Civil War. In near fine condition. A fascinating archive of first-hand accounts documenting the life career and heritage of one of America's least recognized Founding Fathers. American statesman John Hanson was elected to the Continental Congress in 1779 after serving for several years in the Maryland General Assembly and Maryland House of Delegates. When relations between Great Britain and the colonies became a crisis in 1774 Hanson became one of Frederick County's leading Patriots. Responsible for recruiting and arming soldiers Hanson proved to be an excellent organizer and Frederick County sent the first southern troops to join George Washington's army. Because funds were scarce Hanson frequently paid soldiers and others with his own money. In December 1779 the House of Delegates named Hanson as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress and signed the Articles of Confederation on behalf of Maryland on March 1 1781. On November 5 1781 Congress elected Hanson as its president. Under the Articles of Confederation the United States had no executive branch; the president of Congress was a mostly ceremonial position but the office did require Hanson to serve as neutral discussion moderator handle official correspondence and sign documents. unknown

This well-known Welsh temperance advocate enjoyed a career as sailor and sea captain before becoming a mover and shaker among the Good Templars establishing many hundreds of lodges and children's lodges throughout Wales and leading their temperance cause; he was elected to their highest offices nationally and internationally. ANS 1p 5" X 8" New York NY 1874 June 6. Addressed to "Dear Brother." Near fine. Mounting traces on verso. On decorative blue "Juvenile Temples of Wales I.O.G.T." letterhead which lists Thomas as "General Superintendent" and on which he has crossed out his hometown of Carnarvon and inserted "New York" Thomas pens in his big bold hand "I have been quite delighted in visiting Peabody Salem & Massachusetts." In 1876 in Louisville Kentucky Thomas was elected Grant Treasurer of the Supreme Grand Lodge of the World so perhaps he was on an earlier tour of American Good Templar locations. Interesting and unusual. unknown

Limited Imprint edition one of only 1950 copies this copy unnumbered. Publisher's full blue cloth gilt lettering on spine in a box with facsimile of first edition title-page. The frontispiece portrait of Isaiah Thomas a copperplate stipple engraved for the "Freemason's Magazine" of Novermber 1811 by W. R. Jones of Philadelphia was pulled from the original plate now in the American Antiquarian Society. The title page eagle was drawn specially for this book and is based on elements of two type ornaments from the Binny & Ronaldson type foundry in Philadelphia whose types Thomas used in printing this work in 1810. An original leaf from that edition printed by Thomas in Worcester is included in this Imprint edition. Edited by Marcus A. McCorison. The volume is in perfect condition unmarked unread tight square and clean. The publisher's tan slipcase with the facsimile paste-down is also in excellent condition althought lightly rubbed but tight and whole. Worcester: Isaiah Thomas 1810. First edition of this work by the famed printer. Octavo bound in contemporary sheep morocco spine labels illustrated with five engraved plates four folding. Gift inscription of Thomas's grandson Benjamin Franklin Thomas on each of the front free endpapers as well as his signature on title page in first volume. Benjamin Franklin Thomas was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Massachusetts and an associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. In good condition. Housed in a custom half morocco chemise and clamshell box. Grolier American 29; Howes T 168; Sabin 95495; Streeter 7:4176. Isaiah Thomas was born in Boston and apprenticed to printer Zechariah Fowle with whom he formed a partnership in 1770. They published the Massachusetts Spy but after three months Thomas continued the publication alone. The royal governor ordered the attorney general to prosecute Thomas for his Whig views but the grand jury refused to indict him. In 1774 Thomas published the Royal American Magazine for a short time. Three days before the Battle of Concord in which he participated Thomas moved his presses from Boston to Worcester. Thomas continued publication of the Massachusetts Spy there until 1802 with gaps from 1776 to 1778 and from 1786 to 1788; published and sold books; and built a paper mill and bindery. In 1802 he transferred the business to his son. From 1775 to 1803 Thomas published the New England Almanac which his son continued until 1819. In 1786 he was the first printer in the United States to use music type and in 1791 he printed a folio edition of the Bible and of Isaac Watts’ Psalms and Hymns. He began a project on the history of printing in 1808 and he published it in two volumes in 1810. His grandson published a second edition in 1874. In 1812 Thomas founded what became the American Antiquarian Society and he donated 8000 volumes from his collection and one of the most valuable files of newspapers in the country to the Society. On his death he bequeathed his entire library and collection of early American newspapers to the American Antiquarian Society. Isaiah Thomas unknown
