‎Good. 1544. Full-Leather. On offer is a superb ancient book VIA CRUCIS Way of the Cross; Twelve Stations of the Cross. "Domini Redemptoris ac Salvatoris Nostri Jesu Christim." Twenty-nine 29 printed pages detail the 12 stations of the Cross in the Cruxifiction of Jesus. Pagination begins at page 3 through page 32. Original binding 4 bands 5 compartments and while the original title page has been removed there are four 4 manuscript pages including a simple but beautifully handwritten new title page with the word Via rubricated leading to the Oratio. There are seven 7 pages in more lovely calligraphy at the end titled "Officium S. Spiitus". Followed by a number of blank pages. Seems like an ideal book for a pilgrim to record his own journey to the Holy Land. Handwritten is an 'ex libris' noting Ferdinandi de Graes as the owner. The full leather binding is well attached no cracks but some small worm holes in the endpaper. Old pencil note dates the book at 1544. All indications agree. ‎SCHLOSS ZEIL WALDBURG-ZEIL LEUTKIRCH IM ALLGÄU GDR. Good. 1722. On offer is a super original 18th Century manuscript relic related to the physical art of war. Thirty hand drawn pages many with copious meticulous notes detailing what in 1772 would have been the state of the critical art of moving and parading masses of armed men into and during battle. Napoleon would likely have been trained to the standards or the like in this very handsome German volume. There is a rubber stamped inscription 'Archivrat Dr. R. Rauh Schloss Zeil Wrtrag' identifying the book as having been part of the Library of the famed residence of the Princes of Waldburg-Zeil in Leutkirch im Allgäu in southern Germany. The 7 x 5 inch book still has some of the gilt filigree over the leather and marbleized free endpapers attest to the value of this manuscript and was likely a ranking officers though we can only speculate. ‎1754-1763 COMPLETE ACCOUNTING ARCHIVE AND HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT AUDIT OF THE EXPENSES AND RECEIVABLES OF THE HOPITAL DES INCURABLES‎

‎Paris FRANCE 1754. On offer is an accounting report for l'Hopital des Incurables in Paris France covering the years 1754 to 1763. This folio of two 23" x 19" folded sheets is a complete and detailed accounting of expenses receivables etc for a ten year period. Beautiful penned final audit of the hospital's accounting. Folded twice into a quarter size the documents are in good shape with some framing to the facing pages and some minor splits to some of the folds. Interior pages are super. Provenance: The collection of SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS 1792-1872. Born in 1792 Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper including cartloads of documents from wastepaper merchants and the entire inventories of booksellers. "I wish to have one copy of every book in the world" he declared to a friend. He very nearly succeeded. His collection ultimately grew to more than 100000 books and at least 60000 manuscripts. As a result of his extravagant purchases Sir Thomas was permanently on the verge of bankruptcy and was constantly pursued by creditors. So many books arrived at his house that it was impossible to unpack his acquisitions much less keep pace with them. Visiting scholars driven to distraction would spend days hunting for an elusive text in the dusty heaps that filled every room. Because Sir Thomas has a morbid dread of fire most of his collection was housed in coffinlike boxes that could be carted away quickly. Visitors to Middle Hill were struck too by the presence of numerous logs a ploy he used to lure beetles away from his books. As Sir Thomas relentlessly pursued his passion the house itself began to crumble and its floors started to sag under the cast weight of hundreds of tons of paper. His neglect of Middle Hill was partly deliberate however. Sir Thomas's chief enemy in life James Halliwell had married his daughter against his wishes. It appears that Halliwell was in Sir Thomas' eyes the worst kind of criminal a book thief who had stolen valuable works from university libraries and even from his father-in-law. Having no sons Sir Thomas was unable to prevent Halliwell from inheriting his estate. To ensure that his detested heir would never receive anything of value Sir Thomas's solution was to allow Middle Hill to fall unto complete disrepair. He even went so far as to chop down and sell for lumber the centuries-old oak trees that lined the majestic mile-long drive to his home. In 1863 Sir Thomas decided to move - in order to accommodate his books. With the aid of 160 men 103 wagonloads of books and papers drawn by 230 horses the books were lumbered from Middle Hill top their new estate in nearby Cheltenham. It is said that for years afterwards the countryside was littered with the remains of carts that had collapsed under the sheer weight of the Phillipps collection. Sir Thomas continues to add to his library until his death in 1872. After Sir Thomas's death his immediate family had no room for his collection. So vast was the library that although individual items and large sections were sold privately or through numerous auction sales the Phillipps collection is still being sold more than a century after the death of its owner. In the course of its sales many treasures have come to light. As late as 1964 part of the long-lost and unique medieval manuscript of the Roman poet Ovid's Metamorphoses appeared and was subsequently reunited with its other half at Magdalen College Oxford. Once destined for destruction as worthless wastepaper this and many other priceless works were saved by the single-minded obsession of the greatest bibliomaniac of all time. Manuscript. Good. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of early 19th Century ocean going trade and commerce being a handwritten ship's log dated August 6 1818 to March 11 1820 detailing a 13 661 mile voyage from Block Island of Rhode Island to Indonesia to Sandy Hook. The large folio has some 60 pages; most have three entries per page; 20 or so pages excised. The early pages had been cover as if someone paste over news clippings and scrap and then carefully removed to leave a difficult but readable text which gets much better quite soon. The ship sailed from Block Island to Gibraltar Bay; Madeira Portugal; Cape Verde; Java Malay Archipelago and Sunda Isles Indonesia; Island of St. Helena to Sandy Hook. ‎1849 - 1850 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A REBEL AND PARTICIPANT IN THE REVOLUTION OF BADEN DETAILING HIS PARTICIPATION ARREST INTERROGATION AND IMPRISONMENT‎

‎Donaueschingen Germany Southhern Germany. Very Good. 1849. On offer is a very unique historically significant 1849 - 1859 manuscript relic of the Revolution of Baden. There are fifty three 53 pages in German handwriting containing the journal entries of an unidentified 'rebel' and citizen of Donaueschingen Germany who was arrested as part of the Rebellion. While the participant is unidentified local historians researchers or collectors of the era may have enough clues to ascertain the writer's full identity. The entries are dated 6th of July 1849 the day before his arrest until the 25th of June 1850 the day the sentence of the Royal Court was handed down. The accused describes graphically where and how his accommodations were by whom and when he was interrogated and for which accusations how he responded and gives such an informative picture of that time and those circumstances from the point of view of someone who at the end of the Revolution of Baden was arrested by the Prussians as a supporter of the revolution. Here are some snippets: 6th July 1849: "Friday night at about 11 pm marched the troops and the guards under the leadership of Siegel Werner Gögg and so on off toward Hüfingen." 7th July 1849: "On Saturday marched against them the Hessians the Prussians the Bavarians the Mecklenburgers the Frankfurters and the Nassauers about 6000 men towards Donaueschingen a small city in the Black Forest region where 3000 men mostly Bavarians were stationed. On this day I got 20 meters of accommodations…" In the evening at 7 o'clock I was by the Brigadier and the Hessian Provost on orders by the Civil Commissioner Refanie supposedly because of favouring the revolt arrested. There follow descriptions about the type and place of his accommodation observations about the high number of men stationed in Donaueschingen speculation that he could only have been arrested because of a denunciation; on the 9th of July he was apprised of the accusations against him; there follow the days of the hearings with exact descriptions of the proceedings: "on the 2nd January 1850 I had my final interrogation…" "Tuesday the 25th June 1850 they revealed the royal court's verdict upon which I on Monday appealed to the upper court registered." With this last sentence the entries end. The first 45 pages are in a 45-page stitched notebook at the approximate size of 15.5 x 10 cm. and a further 8 pages of the same size are loose. Historians collectors and researchers will recognize the the utter uniqueness and rarity of this manuscript. Overall VG. DEUTSCHER: Im Angebot ist ein einzigartiges und historisch bedeutsames Relikt des badischen Aufstandes 1849-1850 in deutscher Handschrift. 53 Seiten deutsche Handschrift auf Papier enthaltend die Tagebuchaufzeichnungen eines Bürgers aus Donaueschingen der am 6. Juli 1849 wegen "Begünstigung des Aufstandes" verhaftet worden war. Die Aufzeichnungen sind in der Zeit vom 6. Juli 1849 dem Tag vor seiner Verhaftung bis zum 25. Juni 1850 dem Tag der Urteilsverkündung durch das Hofgericht erfolgt. Der Beschuldigde schildert anschaulich wo und wie er untergebracht war von wem er wann zu welchen Vorwürfen verhört wurde was er darauf erwiderte und gibt so ein aufschlußreiches Bild der damaligen Zeit und Umstände aus der Sicht eines am Ende des badischen Aufstandes von den Preußen als Begünstiger der Revolution Verhafteten. Einige Textpassagen: 6.Juli 1849: "Freitags Nachts ungefähr 11 Uhr marschierten die Volkstruppen und Wachmänner unter Anführung Siegels Werners Gögg etc. nach Hüfingen ab" 7. Juli 1849: "Samstags zogen dagegen Hessen Preußen Baiern Mecklenburger Frankfurter & Naßauer etwa 6000 Mann nach Donauöschingen wo 3000 Mann meistens Baiern dort einquartiert wurden. an diesem Tag bekam ich 20 M. Einquartierung."".Abends 7 Uhr wurde ich durch den Brigadier und einen heßischen Provosen auf Befehl des Zivilkommissär Refanie angeblich wegen Begünstigung des Aufstandes verhaftet." es folgen Angaben über Art und Ort der Unterbringung Betrachtungen über die hohe Zahl von Einquartierungen in D.onauE.eschingen Spekulationen darüber daß er nur aufgrund einer Denunziation verhaftet worden sein könne und anderes mehr. am 9. ‎1860 FASCINATING SIGNIFICANT ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN DOCUMENT DETAILING THE TENSE AND FRAUGHT MOOD ONLY TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE 1860 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION THAT WOULD BE THE CATALYST FOR THE BLOODIEST WAR IN AMERICAN HISTORY‎

‎BALTIMORE MARYLAND MD. Good. 1860. On offer is an absolutely unique and amazing document of one of the most significant events in American history. It is a letter sent from Baltimore and dated October 22 1860 discussing the Presidential election that would take place in less than two weeks and directly lead to the secession of the Southern States and the beginning of the Civil War. The unknown sender first gently admonishes his friend for not including in his previous letter the result of “the Fall River theft.” “Pray how did it result” he asks curious about this local event. The rest of the letter is of the upcoming and “confounded election.” “Some of the people South of us are trying to make a fuss.” He continues “.and as Lincoln will be elected I sincerely hope he may have a sufficiency of Jackson plush to make them toe the mark” after he wins. Finally in what is a most fantastic part of this letter the author writes “if Mr. Lincoln’s administration shall be such as to view the affectation of all candid and fair minded men the days of slavery in this state are numbered in my opinion.” The letter is two pages long written on the front and back of one sheet of paper. The letter itself is in good condition showing very little discoloration and only small cosmetic damage to some parts of the edges and creases. The handwriting is done in black ink showing no fading. The ink does slightly bleed over to other side of the page but this does not affect the legibility of the content which is very easy to read throughout. This is only part of what was a longer letter however whatever happened to the other pages is unknown. This letter is a fascinating letter from the time immediately preceding the tremendous turmoil of the American Civil War. ‎1864 ORIGINAL GROUP OF SIX 6 CIVIL WAR CDVs SOME PHOTOGRAPHS UNKNOWN DEPICTING AN ALABAMA IN THE THROES OF OCCUPATION AND A PARADE OF RECENTLY FREED SLAVES KNOWN AS CONTRABANDS‎

‎DECATUR ALABAMA. Good. 1864. On offer is an original historic and significant group of six 6 Civil War Carte de Visite CDVs circa May of 1864 in Decatur Alabama. The images outdoor scenes four apparently unknown two of these images are in the noted Blue and Gray Civil War Museum in Decatur Alabama make for a super visual record of the difficult times and upheaval of conflict and culture in Alabama during the War. The six CDVs in this collection include; the Pontoon Bridge at Decatur faintly inscribed; the building of breastworks; image of stacked rifles this same image is noted in the Decatur Daily News September 7 2007 and is inscribed "Fatigue Party of the 10th Iowa Decatur" likely with the 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and were at the Battle of Decatur and with USS General Grant who patrolled the Tennessee River and took part in the Battle of Decatur; two street scenes likely Decatur; a photo of recently freed slaves called "Contrabands" during the Civil War presented in a procession of the recently freed Slaves. The word "Contrabands" is inscribed faintly. Rather unique image given most known images of Contrabands show them settled in a camp and not in flight. ‎Collegeville Pennsylvania. Good. 1876. On offer is a small diary kept by a teacher in the centennial year of the United States. Measuring 3 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches the leather bound diary contains about 400 pages and is about 90% complete. The handwriting is legible and the book is in good condition. The writer is unknown. She is a teacher living away from home. Context clues suggest she lives and works in the area immediately west of Philadelphia PA. quite likely Collegeville PA. ref.: Sept 7. The students few as they are live at the school. Much of her entries make a brief comment on what is happening at her school and the letters she writes or receives. "Took the young ladies to the creek to skate before school. They enjoyed it so much they insisted on going again after dinner. We went down Miss C accompanying us. Feel somewhat the worse for our efforts at skating" Jan 15; ". Was surprised and delighted to receive a lovely letter from my friend Sally to whom I had not written for nearly two years. Sent me a lovely tie she is a dear good girl. Received a letter also from ." Jan 19. Like many small private schools enrolment was always a challenge: "Rained and I was sorry Mary had to go home but there seemed no alternative. Had a note from her saying she was very wet when she reached home. We had several new day scholars added to our slender number" April 3. On May 17th she refers to an opportunity to write a Teacher's Examination which suggests that she is not yet licensed. On June 1st she references a parade that she attended in Philadelphia which helps confirm her location and time: "A most delightful cool day. Had went to the city to witness the parade of the Knights Templar pronounces it the finest sight of its kind ever witnessed Received letter from C saying that the little daughter's name is Mabel Lois. I am greatly pleased. Wrote to Mary C" June 1. This small book is a fine record of the events in the daily life of a young woman at the centennial of the United States. Its details give a very good window into what life was like for a young unattached woman as she was beginning to make her own way in the world. On offer is a super original late 19th Century manuscript technical journal ledger and log book relating to the manufacture and design of Ferry Boats a critical maritime business and industry and a comprehensive record of ships built from the 1880s through to the early 1920s. While we have been unable to identify the author or the company that created this significant and historic record we have no doubt that local historians and researchers will have little difficulty revealing the source. The large 14 x 9 inch folio book is comprised of data regarding the size costs finances and structures of these noted ships. Portraits of the hulls breakdowns of the styles are all part of this detailed 200 page book. The data is both general and specific. Long lists of angle iron strakes reverse bars plates flanges garboard belts stringers butt straps gunwales are all meticulously noted detailed and listed. Some of the pages are cost estimates for inquiries made and other pages the majority deal with actual work orders. The specifics include work for different ferry boat clients: West Shore Ferry Boats Ferry Boat #9 N.B. F.F. East River Ferry Company Hoboken Land and Improvement Co. pontoons for Landing Bridge Fisheries Great Lakes Transit Co. of Chicago and we noted an estimate for a potential South American client. ‎1894 Handwritten Transcribed Manuscript of Tom Taylor's "Plot and Passion" a 19th Century Detective Play‎

‎United States: Transcription of 19th Century Detective Play. Fair with no dust jacket. 1894. Hardcover. On offer is an outstanding example of the type of melodramatic stage productions that were popular in 19th century America. The script is of a transcribed handwritten copy of a manuscript entitled "Plot and Passions" originally authored by the English dramatist critic and editor of Punch Magazine Tom Taylor sometime prior to 1853. On the first page there is a dedication to a "Mrs. Ella Marbles from one Phillip Ray". On the last page there is another notation: "Presented to S. M. Forest Mrs. Ella Marbles The Old Lady of the Columbus Stock Chicago Ill May 17th / '94". Our informal research has not been able to find any additional biographical information about any of these individuals. The play's original author Tom Taylor began his career as a professor of English literature and language at University College London in the 1840s. However he did not remain long in that position leaving to practice law. Upon being called to the Bar he practiced law for about 5 years before joining the British Civil Service where he worked until retirement in 1876. Parallel to this he built a flourishing career as a writer journalist and dramatist. His output was prodigious numbering some 100 plays in addition to countless articles and columns published in mainstream publications such as The Times and Punch. One of his most famous play in America was "Our American Cousin" 1858 which achieved great success in the 19th century. It remains famous as the play that was being performed in the presence of US President Abraham Lincoln when he was assassinated in 1865. The play "Plot and Passion" was first performed at London's Olympic Theatre in 1853. There was some later dispute between Taylor and the writer John Lang as to whether Lang assisted in writing the play. Taylor dismissed those claims out of hand. Lang was the author of a story with a similar plot - "The Secret Police". The play is of a style known then as a 'detective play'. Set in Napoleonic France it tells the story of 'Fouché' the head of the French Secret Service who uses a group of women whom he refers to as his "Cytherean Court" to discover and trap the mysterious author of letters written against Fouché and Napoleon. For a collector of 19th century stage productions this would be an excellent addition to a collection. This volume measures 7.5 inches by 9.5 inches and contains 184 numbered pages. It is 50% complete as the text is written on one only side of each leaf. The book shows the wear and tear of time. Although present the front cover is only loosely attached to the book while the back cover has separated. The binding is sewn and is in good condition. The pages are all intact and secured to the spine and in good condition. ‎1896 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A YOUNG MUSLIM MAN WHO WITNESSES THE DEATH OF HIS FATHER AT THE HANDS OF THE SULTAN'S SOLDIERS HIS MOTHER BY ROBBERS AND HIS SUBSEQUENT ENSLAVEMENT AS A GUNMAKER AND TRAINING AT AMERICA'S WINCHESTER ARMS FACTORY‎

‎FEZ MOROCCO CASABLANCA SAHARA DESERT NORTH AFRICA. Very Good. 1896. On offer is a simply sensational riveting original very intriguing significant manuscript autobiography dated Dec. 27 '96 1896 of a young Muslim boy who recounts over 69 or so pages his birth on the sands of the desert near Fez and his enslavement and eventual repatriation. The details of his life a nothing short of remarkable for readers in the 21st Century: his parents; a father of immense piety his mother an outcast of her tribe and himself a young boy who would eventually watch his father and his mother be murdered separately. Historians and researchers will find a fascinating and arguably an unparalleled first-hand account of this boy's life under Islamic Code and his utterances provide a full understanding of his beliefs and the guidance they provide his humanity. Even a casual read reveals an eyebrow raising narrative: after the murder of his father by the Sultan's soldiers and his mother by robbers he was taken captive as a slave and apprenticed to a gunsmith who finished guns for the Sultan's army. The unidentified author and some other slaves were apprenticed to the Sultan's gunsmith and were at one time sent to America where they were to work in what appears to be the Winchester Gun Factory in order to learn the art of gun making - to provide better guns for Sultan's army. The details of travels suffering and cruelty are all related but in a quick paced to the point manner. After returning from his training he was returned to his master at Casablanca. It appears that the author escaped slavery around this time and eventually returned to his homeland in the Sahara Desert where he had a deep religious experience and felt the call of Allah on his life to become a hadji like his father. With this call he sought out the place where his father had lived to claim that dwelling as his own. The manuscript begins: "I was born on the sands of the Sahara where the caravans come up from Timbuctoo. The white sands that stretch away from the mountains on the West toward the end of the world behind these mountains there is nothing and no one has been there but towards the East one may go as far as Mecca and become a Hadji as was my father. All this is the land of the true believer where he may hear and obey the call of the Prophet and live in the true faith. The sun shines there always and there are no rains as in other lands to torment the faithful. If clouds come it is but to chase their shadows on the sunlit sand. My father was a saint and lived in a white tomb overlooking the plain and near the ___ of the great caravan . . . . He was a holy man who made the journey to Mecca many times. Sickness and death did not molest him so that he knew he was accepted of Allah and waited only the call of the Prophet. . . . . It was caravans from the south that were the most interesting for thy brought the slaves that should serve the faithful at Fez and Wazan. As true believers we could rejoice at their captivity for they would be converted. They were mostly in chains each with a heavy ring about his neck from which a chain extended to a ring upon the neck of his neighbour and there were always some rings without necks by counting which you might know how many had died in coming through the desert. My father thought that all should be killed as infidels hateful to Allah intolerable to the faithful but the people of the caravans thought not so claiming the example of Mohamad who spread the faith by conquest." We learn that his father's piety was also his downfall as he was enraged by an infidel Englishman travelling under the Sultan's protection and after he raised a knife to attack the infidel he was summarily destroyed by the Sultan's troops. His mother died within days at the hand of robbers who stole the camel she was given as a blood libel payment. The boy's description of the Englishman's attitude of the blood libel payment is near comedic if it was not so insensitive to the local custom. Toward the conclusion of the 69 page manuscript is the following interesting statement regarding the author's account of his experiences. After describing his having found a place of safety in the mosque of Edris he writes "Not far away is the house of the books of a thousand years near which dwells the scribe who has written this for me to send to the head man a Lida Winster Winchester gun house. A gun maker in the old street goes shortly to see Caid Cobb at Cassablanca. I know not why he has promised to give the Caid this writing to be sent to the head man also to say to the Caid that the man who made it was dead." The work closes with the following: "Soon the rains will be over and then I will walk southward to the place where my father dwelt and seize the tomb in which he lived for it is my right. There only is the land of the true believer where he may hear and obey the call of the prophet. There he needs neither mosque nor Caid for he has the protection of the white sand of the desert and its rainless sky." We note there is what we believe is a later ownership inscription with the name J.G. Bennett 258 Church Street. Research suggests this was likely the noted Islamist John Godolphin Bennett who may have received the book after as the book relates it was sent to the head man at Winchester. The manuscript is written in a ledger style book with black boards and red morocco spine cover and corners. The spine cover is missing. Wear to extremities and fading in one area on the upper front panel corner. The early pages are alphabetized followed by 245 pages of very thin paper. The biographical account is written on the first 69 pages are upon this thin stock. With a few exceptions the back of each page is blank. The work is entirely in pencil with corrections made here and there as will be noted in the accompanying scans. The pages are all intact with only the first page showing a small separation from the inner hinge. The last page blank is mostly missing---no writing evident on this page. The covers are loose and there is weakness in the spine but nothing that affects the text. Occasional light brown age spots otherwise the pages are quite clean. ‎BOLIVIA PERU SOUTH AMERICA. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1899. On offer is a superb pair 2 of original manuscript diaries handwritten by an unidentified American adventurer and gold prospector in Bolivia and Peru circa 1899 - 1901. The diaries inscribed #4 and #5 with the others lost to history tell the incredible story of the author's adventures and encounters with Indigenous Bolivians thieves highwayman soldiers and expatriates. In many ways the times and places nted evoke Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Historians and researchers will be delighted given the long detailed and keen-eyed observations of the author. While this is non-fiction and a personal account it reads like an old-fashioned novel full of intrigue and adventure. For example our author actually pulls his revolver on a group over a mining claim. In another entry he believes he is being followed and writes his location for friends in case he is murdered and his body is found. In another entry he finds an Indigenous man who fell off a treacherous mountain trail into a box canyon and helps in his recovery. Almost every entry mentions his interactions with the Indigenous people of the area and he is often asked to administer help or supply medicine to those he encounters. He also mentions the Federal Revolution of 1899 in Bolivia and battles in the mountains towns etc. There is so much more. In addition to those events he writes about his mining explorations in the Andes on foot with mules and his battle with the elements and fellow miners. There is lots of cheating and double crossing taking place from those he encounters which makes for intense drama. In most cases the author hires Indigenous guides and travels with Anglo companions. They are frequently on the lookout for gold and attempt to make contacts with the local population. Our author had some connection with and worked directly for The Inca Mining Co and Santo Domingo gold mine in Peru. He mentions both several times the diaries also a mill. RESEARCH INFO: "The Santo Domingo mine is located in that zone of the great rivers known in Peru under the name of 'Montana' and situated on the east of the great Andes Cordillera. During the bonanza Mr. W. L. Hardison from California a well-known American engaged in the oil industry happened to pass Santo Domingo on his way to other mines further in the interior and seeing the great output of the mine he made a contract with the owners to buy it. Six months afterward the Inca Mining company a corporation organized under the laws of the state of West Virginia with a capital of $1000000 acquired the property and began workings on a larger scale. Nearly 18 months were devoted to the proper development of the mine and in July 1898 the old mill was completely modified and started continuous running giving good profits and insuring the success of the enterprise." The diaries contain approximately 140 very well-filled pages each. The 1900 diary begins April 7 1900 with a final entry May 14 1901. The 1899 diary begins March 5 1899 with a final entry April 5 1900. Both diaries are bound in hardbound covered boards with red marbled paper and measure 5 x 3 inches. The handwriting is immaculate and easy to decipher. Here are some snippets: "March 5 1899 Borrow twenty four Bolivianos of Recardo. He can give me mule but no Indian. Want to sell him farm to Adams or don't think he would be as accommodating as he is. Also urges me again to employ his daughters husband and he offers me his sisters son of 9 years to cook & do chores for board or an adopted boy. Water reported high on Juliaco- road and likely impassable. Hire Indian to go with me and Bonito to finish drying peaches and prepare garden." "March 7 1899 I can get neither breakfast or mule and in noon before I get started stop with pleasant gentleman in Charzani- He informs me the revolution is not over and Alonzo is still supported by the army showed me good gold ore and offers me half to prospect it for him. Takes no pay." "March 11 1899 Wait long but finally start without breakfast. Bring bread at Jrancame- Pay Indian to let mule feed on her grass. Cross river in boat called balsa- and swim the mule. Road under water and return for guide. Again swim mule much difficulty in reaching Taracos Accommodation with Governor Sugar for two cups of coca. Early start swim two more rivers and hire guide where road is under water. Egbert has not been here. Mr. Carmichel gives me interesting details of the war and present doings of our glorious country." They journey down past the North England coast across to Rotterdam visiting The Hague Amsterdam Utrecht including train journeys tourist sights visited thoughts on people seen etc. Titled "A few days in Holland" the hand made book has a thick card stock cover with a hand painted Dutch scene. ‎1911 VERY UNUSUAL ORIGINAL HUSBAND AND WIFE TANDEM TRAVEL DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY A PAIR OF TRAVELING SPOUSES TOURING THE WEST INDIES AND CENTRAL AMERICA‎

‎WEST INDIES TRINIDAD CUBA COLUMBIA VENEZUELA PANAM. Good. 1911. On offer is a very unique superb pair 2 of original manuscript travel diaries that commence in February of 1911. Of particular fascination is the fact that the books appear to be written by traveling spouses so finely tuned a couple that at first the one book seems to be a transcription of the other but soon their interests diverge and uniquely one reads two versions of the same tour of the "West Indies". Our authors are not unidentified but assuredly from the United States. He leaves with his wife from New York Feb 16 1911 by steamer than down the Atlantic to Florida. From Florida they proceed to Cuba Venezuela Colombia Puerto Rico Jamaica Panama Trinidad Barbados Martinique and Bermuda. The first book the husband's a simple thickish flip style lined pad is well filled with about 175 pages of copious writings. The second the wife's is a red leather diary with about 80 pages. The pair offer a great deal of fascinating content about the trip such as visiting markets in Trinidad the Negro women buying produce for their white bosses Negro Police in Kingston ethnographic descriptions of native people from barefoot children women with nose rings grave rites in Cuba native fishermen and write in great detail about the scenery monuments etc. There is a tour of cabaña fortress in Cuba active volcanoes in Martinique touring the rebuilt city of Kingston Jamaica after a massive earthquake listening to a confederate civil war veteran onboard the steamer give a lecture about the civil war. Here are some snippets and only a fraction of their Caribbean and Central American tour writings: Feb 16 1911 NY - Florida - Cuba excerpt Saturday morning went aboard the steamer " Aron" about eleven sailed out of NY harbor a little late about two thirty with the orchestra playing the Star Spangled Banner. It was cloudy but the water was smooth you would hardly realize you were moving. We were happily surprised to find four steamer letters and four packages awaiting us. It made us feel we were not without friends tho none were present to take our hand and say goodbye. We were finally started the bugle sounded to announce that lunch was served we watched as the pilot leave the boat - We have a fine orchestra aboard that gives us concerts morning afternoon and evening in the ladies social hall we have the use of the library my first book is the " Call of Dan Matthews". Feb 22 1911 Havana Cuba Arrived at Havana about six this morning Feb 22nd we found George Washington's pictures at the head of the stairs surrounded by the American flag & decorated flowers we thought it a very pretty complement for a British ship to pay him. We anchored outside and a tender came ashore to inspect us. We were told to go into the dining saloon for inspection of course it was only a formality we simply passed before him. Next we drove to the cemetery this we found very interesting. Here we were told how they bury their dead. The grave is about 7 ft deep and all committed here the casket - without outside box is deposited than lime is thrown over it and a little earth after this the grave is covered with a heavy white stone with handles and tightly sealed. This is left undisturbed for some years this it is opened the bones taken out & deposited in a small casket a small cemented receiving vault which sometimes is built at the head of the grave. A guide & myself went out into the country passed the water works insane asylum etc when about a mile from the asylum we had an experience our gasoline gave out & we sit in the road one hour while our chauffeur went back to the asylum to replenish. Feb 27 1893 Puerto Rico It is customary for families here to take their wash to the river it being Sunday we saw a good deal of this. There were large companies of them and they seemed to be having a happy time. Our guide told us they beat the clothes with a stick. I remarked that it would be quite an undertaking for the families high up on the mountain to bring their clothes to the river. He informed us they did not wash very often. We saw entire plantations of sugar cane large coconut groves bananas etc. When we reached the end of the line about 1 o'clock we were served with ham sandwiches oranges cake and lemonade from the boat. Feb 28 1911 Puerto - Rico Organized sports began today consisting of curling - shuffle board pillow fights - cock fights etc- they are quite interesting & amusing it is lovey warm today girls in swimming suits dancing on deck in the sunshine. We left Santiago about 4 pm for Jamaica as we to sailing out of the harbor we one of the wrecks of the Spanish fleet. March 2 1911 Jamaica We took a special trolly to the Constant Springs Hotel where we found carriages waiting to take us to Stoney Hill. It was a delightful ride we met a great many natives carrying heavy loads of produce apparently very easy on their heads many of them had donkeys also heavily loaded which they were leading or driving. The natives were a variety of bright colors were barefooted & occasionally we saw some of the woman smoking cigarettes or pipes. March 5 1911 Panama Arrived at the isthmus of Panama this morning both Carlton and I regret exceedingly that we must see this interesting place today of at all. After breakfast - Sunday morning we left Colon on special train for Panama to see the much talked of canal our first stop was at Galoon we had some minutes here to get out & see the locks there are to be is triple flight locks arranged in Janio at the Southern extremity of Galum. March 7 1911 Cartagena Colombia March 7 arrived at Cartagena this am this is an old city walled Spanish city with a population of 27000 was founded by Spanish in 1533. I saw nothing attractive it is a very dirty city squalor and flies everywhere street scenes were amusing nude children colored women sitting on the street with a little tray of vegetables for sale. A fat black woman frying cakes on a charcoal stone etc. It was hot on land & delightful to return to the Aron. March 11 1911 Trinidad We were told the stores would close at noon or one o'clock so we spent the morning at the stores going through the market etc - The market was thronged by colored women buying their supplies the various kinds of meat and vegetables were sold by colored people some of the women were very much decked out with jewelry bracelets to their elbows earrings all around the ears. A ring a nose stud in the nose to me was so disgusting Chet wondered way we saw no white people at the market we were told it would not do for white people to go to the market they all send their cooks. ‎1925 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF ONE AMERICAN WOMAN AND FAMILY DOING THE GRAND EUROPEAN TOUR IN GRAND STYLE‎

‎U. S. - EUROPE. Good. 1925. On offer is a richly detailed fascinating travel journal from the Roaring Twenties. Measuring 6.75 inches by 3.5 inches this journal contains 136 pages and is approximately 72% complete. The leather cover is in good condition and all the pages are intact. The pages are not numbered nor are they dated. The handwriting is clear and legible. The author is unknown. It was written in 1925 from late June until approximately the end of August. Context suggests this is a young woman who is travelling with her mother and either friends or other family members. The journal begins June 26th: "Gary and Frank and Ed drove me down to New York. - Met Mother Byron Ruth and Emma at the Commodore - Went to Palais D'Or for supper." June 26. They sailed the next day on the steamer New Amsterdam correctly SS Nieuw Amsterdam bound for Boulogne France. Once disembarked they head for Paris. She has an excellent eye for detail and keeps careful notes about all they see and experience: "Roomed and ate at Grand Hotel du Louvre - Food fair - rooms good - service in dining room rotten - elsewhere good. Cashed my first American Express check & studied the money - the exchange rate changed every day but averaged 20 francs for a dollar as we reckoned everything from that. Taxis go miles for a franc & expect a 10% tip. If we wanted a taxi for sightseeing we gave him 20 francs extra and he stayed all day if necessary. One man Mother and I had one day carried a rocking rooster on his hood and a white terrier in his lap ." July 7. "Saw Conciergerie - the old prison under the Palace where Marie Antoinette was kept before she was beheaded. We were shown her cell and the chair she used there - the actual blade which chopped off her head and numerous other relics". July 9. Visited Heidsieck's champagne factories where the wine has been seasoned in casks. It is bottled & put in cellars of which there are 20 miles upside down then turned around a little three times a day so that all the sediment will go to the cork. In a month the bottles are opened tested and sorted as to quality. Then bottled or doctored as necessary and is ready for the customer. Each process is done on a different level but all in cellars. None of the workers have rheumatism - probably because they drink champagne! ."July 11. "Next they off to Switzerland where they visited Montreux & Grinndelwald. From there they travelled into Italy stopping first in Milan: ". Taken to Leonardo Da Vinci's "Last Supper". Has been restored by ironing out by modern artist. Belongs to government now." In Florence she stood in Savronola's Square: ". where Savronola was burned at the stake now holds reproductions of Angelo's David . The original did stand there as a hitching post but is now in the academy of Fine Art. ." On they went through Rome and Venice before turning northwards to Vienna. Her descriptions continue capturing interesting details often expressed with a wry humour: "Doges Palace full of paintings and not very homelike." From Austria they travelled through Germany and the Netherlands before crossing over to England. Her notes continue in the same detailed manner. Unlike many travellers they didn't just stay in London but continued on north. Her description of the storied Warwick Castle is delightful: ". They say King Edward had an affair with Lady Warwick and spent much time there. I don't blame him. It's a wonderfully romantic spot! ." They continued north to Edinburgh. While there they visited Rosslyn Chapel. This beautiful chapel was constructed in the 15th century by William Sinclair of Norwegian/Viking and Scottish heritage. The architecture is intricate the "Apprentice Pillar" and reeks of symbology. In the 1980's Rosslyn Chapel began to be associated in the public's mind with the Knights Templar and Freemasonry. Books were written linking the esoteric knowledge of both these orders to the fantastic symbolism frozen in the stone carvings of Rosslyn. This was only magnified with the publication of The Da Vinci Code and the subsequent movie where Rosslyn Chapel played a significant role. ". to Rosslyn Chapel & Castle. Chapel is small but the beautified thing we have seen. Story of the carving of the post the "Apprentice Pillar"; Architect couldn't think of a good design for it & so went to the continent and found his inspiration." Several days later they were in Liverpool boarding their ship for home. Her comments for the trip are quite few but her last one stands out: "Sunday morning we struck a schooner. Everybody dressed and took life preservers and stayed up until dawn.Towing the schooner to New York. May make us late." In her memoranda section she notes her shopping list and the names of shops and vendors such as Venice - Linens - Emma Centini Wear - Hotel Italie London - Mappin & Webb - Jewelry - Regent St. This is an outstanding travel journal. Rich in detail and very well-written a historian would find a wealth of information and details within its covers. ‎Unknown. Very Good. 1928. On offer is an absolutely fascinating 1928 manuscript notebook discussing the relationship between Geology and Christianity. The unknown writer discusses geology in terms inclusive of astronomy archaeology zoology and spiritual connection to the fundaments of the earth. The fields are discussed the history of earth's Geology is explained in lay terms in an overview with some references to God's laws universality of God's laws light transmission sound that existed before humanity and then the writer compares the timelessness of the Grand Canyon with the idea that in Christ's time it was the same as now. Compares incomprehensible Geological time with human measurement of time. Summary - Scientific not preachy Science and nature are wonderful measures of time history and evolution most likely in accordance with God's plan. It reads like a lecture or presentation talk or possible an article though the author mentions Miami County Kansas Cumberland and Blue Ridge Mts. the Alleghenies Appalachians Sierras as places he has visited. The 50 page 4" x 6 1/2" book is very easy to understand very legible. ‎1930 ORIGINAL INSCRIBED CRUISE LOG BOOK AND JOURNAL OF A TRIP TAKEN TO NORTHERN EUROPE AND THE FORMER USSR ON THE HAMBURG-AMERICAN LINE STEAMER THE ‘S.S. RELIANCE’‎

‎ABOARD THE S.S. RELIANCE SCANDANAVIA USSR. Good. 1930. On offer is the 1930 Log Book of the S.S. Reliance of a “Cruise to Northern Wonderlands and Russia” on the Hamburg-American Line. This is a fantastic book of particular interest to those interested in the history of cruise travel the Hamburg-American line or snapshots of Northern Europe in the Interwar period. The cruise journey lasted 36 days and travelled from New York to Iceland numerous cities in Norway Sweden Estonia Leningrad in the U.S.S.R. Finland Denmark France and finally Germany. The first entry of the book is for July 5th and begins “our first stop was ‘Iceland.’ The ___ ride to the island wasn’t more than a minute ride. The hilly climb thru the town of ‘Reykjavik’ was of interest because of the people the ladies with small black skull caps fitted close to their heads with long blond braids hanging down their backs.” In Reykjavik the author visits the Einar Jónsson Museum comments on the uniqueness of the people the automobiles and the island geography. A well he goes to the ‘Hot Springs’ “where women from the neighborhood come to wash. We passed many fields where ladies were garbed in yellow and white were packing and salting smelly fish. The next day the boat goes to the “North Cape” in Norway the most northerly point of Europe and the author climbs up to the plateau. “At the top the ‘Midnight Sun’ was an unforgettable night. We looked down on the glistening wall of gold. And were breathless at the wonder and beauty of it all. The next day the author visits the town of ‘Hammerfest’ but writes “there is practically nothing to write about ‘Hammerfest’ because we didn’t get to see the Meridian Line. We were hot and tired from the night before. From there the ship travels to Lyngseidet and notes the appearance of the natives and their ‘dirty looking woolen clothes. The boat continues down the Norwegian coast to Trondhjem then to Åndalsnes Molde Hellesylt Merok Balholm Gudvangen Bergen then Oslo. The towns are written about in often short descriptions and the glaciers and fjords are noted often for their beauty and as “a treat to anyone enjoying scenery.The gorgeous miles of glaciers on all sides was almost too good to be true.” Bergen the author writes “gave us a particular thrill tho it was not caused by the fish smell; but by the fact that it was the first really civilized place we visited.” A stop in Stockholm brings a drive through the city visiting the Town Hall Royal Palace Riddarholm Church and the Skansen Museum. “What a beautiful city Stockholm turned out to be; and it appeared quite progressive with its new buildings being erected very clean; and with traffic giving in all directions - ‘mainly in yours!’” Tallinn Estonia is next and the author writes of their guide who takes them through the city: “She was from a ___ impoverished family supporting her children by being a guide and interpreter. She was full of ___fire and enthusiasm - and a horror of ‘Russia’ - said she had lived in Moscow’ and escaped in time.” The trip goes on to Leningrad Russia. “So much romance beauty and historical significance has been attracted to ‘Leningrad’ and ‘Moscow’ that seeing them now in such a deplorable state seems pathetic. The author comments on seeing the ‘Hermitage’ museum as well as a number of statues and paintings including a life-like Voltaire a ‘most adorable’ Cupid and a painting by Caravaggio probably misheard by the author as the name is spelled ‘Garraraggio’. At this point the author has run out of room to write in the book and entries for the last few stops Helsingfors Copenhagen Boulogne and finally Hamburg are not recorded. The book in which all this is written is one that seems to have been bought by some passengers. The cover page shows that this book is number 127 out of an edition of 144. It was bought for $17 quite a sum in the Great Depression Era. The log book is specific for this trip stating a detailed itinerary of each city including “optional shore excursions” as well as a map of the cruise’s route through North Europe. As well there are a number of pages of more general knowledge including entries for “Bell Time on Shipboard” an explanation of “Miles and Knots” “Common Nautical Terms” “Latitude and Longitude” “Ocean Depths” “Foreign Money” conversion and more. Each main stop on the cruise has an entry in the book explaining a bit of the history of the country in general and specific city of call. Under these entries is where most of the journal is written. There are a number of free pages that as well that just say ‘At Sea’ that are more filled with writing. The second page contains a photograph of the captain of the ship “Capt. C. Luck.” The final two pages include an autograph page of “Fellow Passengers Met On Board” with a number of signatures and addresses as well as a number of newspaper clippings one clipping of photographs of “Snapshots of a Peasant Wedding at Os. Near Solstrand Hotel” one explaining the significance of Elsinore Denmark as a setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet and finally a clipping of a short history of Bergen Norway. Included in the back pocket of the book is a 25 page pamphlet that includes a comprehensive “List of Passengers” the “Cruise Itinerary” advertisements for other Hamburg-America line cruises and a number of pages of “Information for Passengers” that cover things such as entertainment on board the ship laundry baggage gymnasium use wireless telegrams and a number of other subjects. A loose photograph of a man in a casual sailor garb is included in this pamphlet. The back reads “With happy wishes and pleasures in Germany.” The name is difficult to make out but it looks like “Resso Prien.” This name is not found in the list of passengers or crew so it is unclear if this photograph is of the owner of the log book or not. The log book is 48 pages in length in which there are about 25 pages or so with writing in them. It has a green cover showing very minimal wear. The spine does have two small tears. The pages are all in good shape though some show evidence of age and use. The author’s writing is easily legible in black ink. A few passages are slightly faded but can still be read easily. ‎SANGER FRESNO CALIFORNIA CA. Good. 1935. On offer is a detail oriented well-filled handwritten diary written by an unidentified Fresno-Sanger California area man. Research suggests this 1935-1939 Depression Era five year diary is written by a mid-50s year old man he has his 32nd anniversary in 1935 he goes to Fresno for a new set of teeth works extremely hard with his own ranch and orchard plus he has a super busy plumbing business where he works for many larger commercial establishments: Fresno High Wash Union High Pleasanton Restaurant Eston High School cleared a sewer worked on down spouts at Hall of Records Roos Bros. Most of the jobs seem large and involving pipe installation and pipe maintenance. He also butchers pigs and cows and most of the other jobs a large ranch and orchard require. Many businesses friends workers and family are named and local historians or collectors may very well find the name of our author. ‎1938 ORIGINAL DEPRESSING DEPRESSION ERA MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG WOMAN DOING HER BEST TO HELP THE FAMILY'S FINANCES AND DIGNITY BUT ALL THE WHILE LIVING HAND TO MOUTH AND TRYING TO MAKE DO WITH PENNIES‎

‎LINCOLN NEBRASKA NB. Good. 1938. On offer is an interesting original 1938 manuscript diary and handwritten account of the trials and difficulties of a young Lincoln Nebraska woman born December 20th 1918 thusly 19 years old for most of the writings and her family trying to survive the Great Depression with dignity. The family often in dire need financially almost lose their home and suffer both the humiliation and stigma of utilities being shut off multiple times. The unidentified author works for the telephone Company often pays the bills to get the utilities turned back on. She lives hand to mouth and sometimes has only pennies in her pocket. She prays her father will pay the rent or find another place to live. Even working she hopes for payday and often it is delayed. It is not specified but she undoubtedly lives in or near Hayward Park in Lincoln Nebraska and mentions going to Johnson Omaha and Tecumseh. Her entries have one small ray of light in them being the movies. Few accounts exemplify the importance of motion pictures to those most affected as the movies were cheap and geared to helping the psyche of many downtrodden Americans. Their importance to out author is evident through the time she spends critiquing the pictures and even rating them. She begins January 12 1938 through to the end of December. Here are some snippets: "January 12th Went to show with Amy "They Won't Forget" a very dramatic picture. Claude Rains Edward Norris and some new actors. ½. Very convincing almost too much so. I hope Marian sees it." "January 20th Gosh wish I could get another job. I'll never be a good operator. I don't want Lillian to feel that I should keep the job just because we used to be neighbors." "February 2nd Saw "Wells Fargo" with Joel McCrea Frances Dee Bob Burns. A very good picture. I certainly enjoyed it. It was long but always interesting. It had everything drama thrills laughs tears villains and a couple wars for good measures. The cartoon was cute. I feel as though I'd really got my money's worth." "March 12th Went to another show tonight "Gold is Where You Find It." Olivia De Havilland George Brent. In Technicolor. Some really beautiful scenes. I'll have to stop going to so many shows." The first page I've missed in a long time. Bought a dress yesterday white sharkskin with a jacket printed with black penguins. I think it's very cute. Fits me perfectly. $5.95. Was on toll all day. Worked 10:00; 2:00 and 6:00; 10:00. The air conditioning is keen!" "July 10th Went swimming. Aunt Ruth and Uncle John and Carol came down. Jean went back with them for a visit. Saw "Three Comrades." ‎1939 1948 MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A POST OFFICE WORKER IN SYRACUSE NEW YORK ATTENDING MEETINGS COMMITTEES AND GOING ABOUT HIS NORMAL BUSINESS OF MAKING SURE THE MAIL IS DELIVERED EVERY DAY‎

‎SYRACUSE NEW YORK NY. Good. 1939. On offer is an interesting book from a Post Office mail carrier first in 1939 then again in 1948. The entries take place from May 17th to October 311939 and then from June 30th to November 15 1948. In 1939 the entries are usually short snippets from the author’s work as mail carrier in Syracuse New York delivering mail at different places around the city: The University of Syracuse Solvay Elmwood Park and others. The entries also concern the meetings surveys inspections committees and other events that happened to or around the author in Pre-WW2 Syracuse. In 1948 the entries become much more general both containing information about work in the Post Office now as a higher up employee in the Post Office. The entries contain information about the weather going to his lake cottage probably at Oneida Lake or Onondaga Lake and reports of the health and wellbeing of family members and coworkers as well as the normal business of working at the office dealing with more and more mail every day. The book contains roughly 50 handwritten pages. The book itself contains probably close to 200 pages in total. The green covers show some discoloration but are structurally very good as is the spine. The binding is tight and very good. The pages inside show little wear toning or foxing and all are in good condition. The ink is still dark and the handwriting is legible throughout. Text: “5/17/39. Request for survey of Lewiston Manor forwarded to Ass’t. Sullivan. Request that Mr. Sullivan consider asking Dept for authority to make two routes of No. 176. Unsatisfactory reports by Dora to Connely. Did the request myself.”; “10/4/39. Called at Univ. Sta. all carriers returned on time. Sup’t. Barnes requested to withhold heavy pieces of paper mail from the carriers in the P.M. and work circs to them instead.Suggested to Ass’t. P.M. that a call window be opened for use of patrons calling at ____ instead of using P.P. collector were people wishing to mail P.P. are frequently blocked away from the ____ by persons calling.”; “Aug. 24 1948. Postmaster called Sullivan into his office and later told me he had given Sullivan a ‘real going over’ regarding his lacking and failure to take care of his job. Maintained that his estimates were usually late extended service to Menlo Dr. without any record - doing it by ‘phone’; changed service in Westvale from Mt. to foot without notifying patrons and delaying other supervisors work by not promptly doing his own work.
