On offer is a super original scrapbook relic and homage to World War II era aviation aviators and airplanes compiled with ephemera including newspaper clippings and magazine photos of airplanes by different manufacturers many with handwritten captions identifying the make models etc. such as Lockheed Douglas Curtiss Beechcraft Ryan and more. ‎Japan. Very Good. 1941. On offer is a super original unique manuscript relic of WWII Japanese war effort being a handwritten diary of Japanese newsman for the period from December 8 Japan time 1941 to the spring and summer of 1942 noting the major events including Pearl Harbor Midway Guadalcanal the Eastern Solomon Islands the beginnings of New Guinea campaign naval engagements with the USS Saratoga Yorktown North Carolina and more. The entries seem to end around late summer of 1942 and there is an interesting postmark in the volume for December 8th 1942 one year after Pearl Harbor. Since this was written during wartime in order to conserve paper the writer used inverted pages from an old office ledger. ‎1942 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT ACCOUNT OF A DANGEROUS TREK BETWEEN BURMA AND ASSAM UNDERTAKEN BY ALLIED FORCES AND THE INDIAN ARMY ORDNANCE CORPS‎

‎BURMA. Fair. 1942. On offer is a super original 1942 typewritten manuscript relic of the Burma Campaign waged between British and Indian forces against Japanese and Thai forces being a fascinating account of a group of Allied soldiers in making the dangerous trek out of Burma to Assam. This eyewitness account includes part of a statement from the commanding officer of the unit against one soldier for the purposes of a court martial original photos of the areas they passed through and members of the unit and a diary account of the month-long trek along with handwritten additions regarding the state of personnel who dropped out along the way a number did die from various illnesses etc. Many of the people mentioned in the account are on the website that specifically lists personnel of the Indian Army Ordnance Corps. Included are four photocopies that came with the original. Condition: The original is very foxed and tatty round the edges but the photos are still in place and good condition and the text is easy to read. ‎1944 ORIGINAL GROUP OF SUB CHASER LOGS LEDGERS AND TECHNICAL INFORMATION‎

‎NORTH ATLANTIC. Good. 1944. On offer is an interesting group of original World War II era journals and log books 6 related to a small and often overlooked or underrated part of the United States Navy being Sub Chasers an invaluable group that served to eliminate Germany's U boat threat. Sub chasers were quickly built usually from wood usually in small boatyards and launched in great haste at the outset of World War II as German U boats were roaming the Atlantic at will unopposed sinking merchant vessels with complete abandon with no regard for neutrality. By the end of WWII over 400 had been built. Their usual duty was escorting convoys and patrolling harbors the sub chasers were also used in other ways. The six books breakdown as follows: Book 1: a few pages with the addresses of Skippers from WWII and their home addresses in later years. 10 men are listed. Book 2: Title B has just a couple of pages of info. Book 3: A.R.B. #25 Daily Log from Sept 18 1944 through Nov 24 1944. Book 4: A couple of pages from April 1946. Book 5: Log C 18351 from Sept 29 1945 to April 1946. Book 6: Log of the motor vessel Quest not the Shackleton Quest for 1946 - 1947 with a few indexed pages of info and some tech notes. ‎The HAGUE NETHERLANDS HOLLAND. Very Good. 1948. On offer is a super group of 14 index type 4 x 6 inch file cards with copious manuscript notes covering most all of the cards with some on both sides detailing the critical 1948 Chess Championship in the Hague Netherlands which was to determine the new world chess master after the death of Alexander Alekhine in 1946. The unknown author of these notes intriguingly notes when Keres plays against Botvinnik that 'Keres play was inexplicably weak in this game as it always seems to be when he plays Botvinnik.' This remark goes right to the heart of the controversy that has lasted for many years and even today in some player's minds that Keres might have thrown the games. These notes are particularly significant beyond the controversial play by Keres given the state of interregnum caused by the death of Alekhine and the difficulties faced by many countries to send representatives so soon after the end of World War II. While it is impossible to know if the unidentified author attended the match one would believe he did so given the notes he has made immediately after many of the moves which appear based on his personal opinion during the match. On offer is a fascinating original manuscript diary handwritten by a Chinese man in the 1960s providing a personal intimate look at his experiences during the peak of Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution. The writer recorded his observations while working in the local knitting factory and also comments on the state of political affairs at the time. Nearly every entry of the diary includes excerpts from Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung that are written in red ink. Particularly unique the author reveals his personal life with two women who both worked in the knitting factory named Zhan Tong Xiang and Sun Gui Ting. Researchers and historians of the era will acknowledge the unique blend of personal life revelations and his political involvement. 200 pages. On offer is an absolutely remarkable pair 2 of diaries offering an insight into the world of what must have been a youngish woman living with her mother in the Washington DC area who was a case study in obsessive compulsive disorder and perhaps agoraphobia and assuredly a long list of other conditions. These diaries covering the years 1976 and 1982 are free form diaries written on 9 x 6 inch three hole blank paper with every possible inch covered in this woman's neat and very legible handwriting. Our writer records almost every incident every movement every action over her waking life. The weather the television show the number of cookies the cat's bowel movements time and consistency the news of the day Congressional news international affairs is recorded noted and discussed in her writings. She begins the entries with the time of the day and many days she begins at four o'clock in the morning until late at night. It is no wonder when we read the build up to her breakdown and her time in the hospital. A psychiatrist could be specific no doubt assessing this woman through her writings as she is open and concise about her moment by moment doings. She even records what laundry she is washing and the detergent she uses. Besides the unique look into this woman's life and mind one also is a party to an American woman who is completely enthralled in pop culture voraciously watching television reading movie magazines and completely immersed in entertainment events. ‎1999 DIARY OF A YOUNG GOD-LOVING AMERICAN MISSIONARY IN ROMANIA PREACHING THE GOSPEL AROUND THE COUNTRY AND DETAILING THE FOOD CULTURE AND MANY ECCENTRICITIES OF THE ROMANIAN PEOPLE‎

‎BUCHAREST ROMANIA. Very Good. 1999. On offer is a recent diary written in 1999 of an American missionary’s trip to preach in Romania. The author is a Baptist from North Carolina and speaks Romanian fluently. The diary is written almost completely in English. It begins in November 17 1999: “Be ready. Some of this will be written in Romanian.My plane ride to Bucharest was a good one. When I arrived in Buc. at OJP. I had to wait 4 hours for my luggage. Ghita said someone would me me at OJP and take me to the train station. That was not the case. Eventually I made it to the station and waited 4 hours for my train most of which I spent outside in a large covered area. It was very cold - about -5° or 30°F and I was prepared for 22°C or 70°F per Ghita’s instructions. My train ride was overnight in a ‘sleeper’ car. It was the bumpiest ride of my life.” In Romania he soon begins travelling through the country preaching. “Last night we preached in a church in Varadia which is a village with a creek that is used as a road. The church as freezing b/c the deacon lit the fire 2 hours late. What an experience! For supper we had sausage and head cheese made from a fresh killed hog. This morning we preached in Carbonari.Tonight we will be at Stiepari to preach at a church w/ about 115 people. Tomorrow I will visit the high school and then be back in Timioara on Monday night.” In addition to writing about preaching to the Romanian people the author writes often of the food he eats and the kindness customs and eccentricities of the Romanian people.” He stays often with a woman named Maria who is the sister-in-law of a friend back home: “I am not sure that Maria is a Christian. This makes things tough to deal with at times. The other night I wanted to sue the phone which I said I had a phone card and she began telling me that I was supposed to give her money for staying there electricity food etc. Well this is right for me to give her money but not for her to demand it.I would rather her give her house for and expect nothing. This way the money I give is a gift - a ‘thank you’ for allowing me to stay in the home.Do for others expecting nothing in Return. When you get something act as if it was not expected - Do things from the heart not out of personal gain.” He also writes of the upcoming millennium and that “it will be interesting to see what Y2K brings. Y2K experts have listed Romania as one of the countries they think will suffer the most.” He also watches a game between an American team Crossfire “a sports ministream team based in Asheville NC” and a team from Timioara. “I was able to sit w/ two Mormon friends I met one in Bucharest. I have been praying for the HS to work on his heart and show him the light. This is a good time for that - he has heard Crossfire present the gospel 2x and he is homesick.” He also quotes some bible verses at length and does some time interpreting what he believes they mean. Most days he spends preaching at churches or joining Romanian Christian youth groups for bible study. On one of his last days in Romania he gets into a conflict with some locals who scam him out of some money: “The conductor of my car said I needed to pay for the extra luggage. I refused b/c I already bought 2 tickets which makes my cabin 1st class by myself. He wasn’t going to let me on but than he did BTW: all this time I am praying. Then the smecher con-man said I need to either purchase an extra baggage billet or buy him or his friends 3 of them a beer. I didn’t buy them but gave the money so I wouldn't have any trouble. This is a part of Romania I despise. He spends the last few pages reflecting on his trip in Romania and quoting and interpreting the bible. This young man really pours his heart out for his love of God and the importance of his religious message. The book is a total of 108 handwritten pages out of a 160-page or so book. The diary is written in a “Sainsbury Reporters Notebook”. The pages turn from top to bottom not left to right. The size is roughly 8” x 5 inches. The pages are in good condition and all still attached to the ring binding. No wear or tear or discoloration. One or two pages are folded up and can be easily unfolded. The handwriting is clean and legible throughout in blue and black ink. ‎C. 17th Century Manuscript Extract after Edward Johnson on Indigenous Peoples of Early New England Headed 1647‎

‎New England Indigenous Land. Good with no dust jacket. c1600s. Ephemera. On offer is a remarkable early manuscript extract preserving a 17th-century English colonial description of Indigenous peoples in New England. The text closely follows a passage from Edward Johnson’s important Puritan history Wonder-Working Providence of Sions Saviour in New England first printed in London in 1654.Johnson’s work is one of the major early histories of Massachusetts Bay and Puritan New England and this extract preserves his colonial description of Indigenous life hunting fishing labor clothing and religious practice. The passage is devoted almost entirely to English observations of Indigenous peoples in early New England likely in the Massachusetts Bay context. It includes detailed descriptions of bows and arrows fishing trapping hunting deer beaver otter moose birds and fish as well as comments on women’s labor clothing seasonal hardship and domestic life. It also includes a reference to “Powawes ” an early English colonial term used for Indigenous spiritual or healing figures. The manuscript is headed “1647” apparently as a chronological marker for the section being copied rather than as the date the physical manuscript itself was written. The language is strongly shaped by 17th-century Puritan colonial attitudes and includes offensive descriptions of Native peoples. It is best understood today as a colonial-era manuscript transcription preserving English settler perceptions of Indigenous life rather than as a neutral ethnographic account. An excerpt follows: “The Indian People in these parts at the English first coming were very barbarous and uncivilized going for the most part naked although the country be extreme cold in the winter season; They are only clothed with a Deer skin and a little bit of Cloth to cover their privy part. The Women for the most part are very modest although they go as naked as the Men; They are generally very laborious at their planting time and the Men extraordinarily idle making squawes to carry their Children and the luggage beside…”The passage continues with descriptions of hunting fishing trapping bows and arrows and English colonial interpretations of Indigenous religious practice including reference to Indigenous healing charms. HISTORICAL NOTE: Although the manuscript is headed “1647” the heading should not be read as proof that the physical manuscript was written in that year. The text appears to be copied from or closely based upon Edward Johnson’s Wonder-Working Providence which was completed after 1647 and first printed in 1654. The “1647” heading is therefore best understood as a chronological or historical marker within the copied material. A significant manuscript relic preserving early colonial New England commentary on Indigenous peoples Puritan worldview settler observation and the manuscript transmission of early American historical texts. Condition: Mild toning minor spotting smudging and a horizontal fold near the end. The fragment has been backed with a thin supporting layer and mounted to a larger modern support sheet. ‎Nantucket Massachusetts MA 1780. On offer is a super original 18th Century manuscript relic of early Nantucket history being a handwritten undated document titled "Some account of Indians that have been hanged since the year 1700". The bizarre deposition describes the first hanging in 1704 of an Indian who killed his wife. It states: "First in 1704 an Indian by the name of Sabo that lived at Mattecocham now Madequesham killed his wife and fled was missing.days. taken at Coppaum the site of the first English settlement on Nantucket in 1659 with a company of Indians that said they had been to Muskeget after Bass returning they stopped at Tuckernuck where they found Sabo who said he waded acrost from Smith's point and now took passage with them the Indian Constable took him Carried him before John Gardner Esquire who committed him to prison he was finally hanged." Five more individuals are listed who were hanged between 1736 and 1768 including a female "Happy Comfort a Squaw in 1739". On offer is a super early 20th Century manuscript relic of police and detective work being a remarkable journal once owned by we assume a detective who kept an inexpensive flip style notebook for the purpose of keeping mug shots and personal details of known and wanted criminals and fugitives. Murderers break and enter perpetrators armed robbers kidnappers and felons of every known stripe are detailed. Forty six pages each with four photographs and accompanying details including height weight scars hair and eye color tattoos and other distinguishing marks the crimes they are wanted for known associates . Historians and researchers and collectors of early policing methods will find a unique treasure in this diligent unidentified officer's detailed notebook. While the notebook has information as o place or the author's name we believe this was compiled between 1910 - 1920 and is related to the Toronto Ontario area as this came from a Toronto estate. On offer is a fine diary recording the domestic and social responsibilities of a woman in California immediately before the United States entered World War II. The author is unknown but from the diary we learn that she lives in or near Santa Rosa CA is a wife and a mother and is 49 when she begins this book. Her entries are detailed and she takes care to provide a very good description of how each day unfolds. The author is very focused on her family and seems to fit many of the traditional expectations of women of her time. Throughout the diary she refers to her husband as “Dad. ” “Washed and dried clothes between showers -- dried colors in the house. Pot luck dinner at Social Hall tonite at 6: 30 -- that’s too early for us so we didn’t plan to go -- dad went later to Council meeting -- they plan to call this Mr. Moorhouse to be our next Pastor -- at $1500 per year. He may not want to come” April 1. “Have been with mother quilting this eve ironing done and clothes put away had to shop for eats” June 24. “Have been to Daisy’s to have hair washed and set. Corn cut from cob & put out to dry in the sun -- have it in the oven this eve . . . Mother picked a few quarts of blackberries -- we don’t care very much for them but so far have canned what she has picked they are doing extra well this summer” August 20. ‎Wilkinsburg Pa. Good. 1928. Softcover. This is a small memorandum booklet with 6 trips in it. The first one is titled "Southern Trip Sept 27 to Oct 5th 1930 in Ford Coupe." They leave Wilkinsburg Pa. at 1:30 and tell the route they took and that they arrived at Grafton West Virginia or Virginia. There are to Niagara Falls 1930 New England 1928 and trip to the Chicago World's Fair in 1933. The World's Fair Trip is written on about 12 pages. It mentions going to the different exhibits including Ripley's Believe It or Not exhibit. It mentions which way they went into the fair and it costing 50 cent. Because there were not any interstate roads they go through a lot of small towns and it seems to take a lot longer to get to places. ‎Atlantic Ocean. Good with no dust jacket. 1944. Softcover. On offer is a handwritten manuscript diary written aboard the USS Monticello AP-61. Very legible in pencil text block has fallen away from the rubber glue top. All 73 sheets are still inside. This comprehensive 5" x 8" Royalmont notebook journal has been well taken care of as none of the 73 pages exhibit tears creases fragility or foxing. All are completely full of first-hand historical and insider information. The journal is very factual with only a few entries not pertaining to the ship. The nameless young man from Ohio does talk very fondly about his wife and baby and about the ship's food. It measures 5" x 8". It begins on July 1 1944 and ends on November 14 of the same year. Every page is easy to read. The first day of this trip for The USS Monticello she had a convoy of 30 ships and blimp dirigible escorts. A quote from the first week:"We are going to England. I have heard that the Monticello is the fifth fastest ship and that this is only the second time that she has been convoyed.It is reported that we have 7M troops aboard". A later entry reads "We are to come across the Northern tip of Ireland through the Firth of Clyde. This morning we passed quite close to the Isle of Man". In the bay at Liverpool he states "Our Propaganda Machine is second to none. I would like to tell people how we are all being fooled". ‎CAIRO KHARTOUM DURBAN SOUTH AFRICA EAST AFRICA. Good. 1940. On offer is a short and fascinating travel journey through East Africa undertaken in the 1940s. It is a detailed account of four Englishmen John James Peter Dawson Harry Davies and the unnamed author and two Ethiopian servants brothers named Datchee and Bouwee who take a journey from Cairo Egypt to Durban South Africa travelling by horseback punts canoes and aeroplane. Chances are that the trip was undertaken during the second half of the 1940s as there is no mention of the war that consumed the world in the first half of the decade. The first page of the book contains an index which shows that the diary consists of six chapters: 1- Preparation for the journey; 2 - From Cairo to Wadi; 3 - From Wadi to Khartoum; 4 - From Khartoum to Lake Rudolf; 5 - Through the jungle; 6 - Back to the world. The index also shows on which page in the book these chapters begin. The first chapter begins: “John James Peter Dawson Harry Davies and myself had been working on the Persian oil field for six years and we wanted a holiday. Peter Dawson proposed to go on a travel holiday from Cairo to the Zambesi and we all agreed. We set off by boat on May 16th and arrived at Cairo on May 17th.” The preparation for the journey consists of their trouble in finding ‘suitable servants’ in Cairo. They eventually find Datchee and Bouwee. They also buy their tents sheets and other assorted travelling gear. “It had taken us five days to get everything ready but we had enjoyed every one of them. We went to our hotel for the last night for in the morning we were going to start our journey.” The second chapter consists of their travel to Wadi in what is now Sudan. They cross through Giza travel on a punt down the Nile river where they meet and exchange food with ‘the natives.’ They travel down the Nile for a few days having great difficulty crossing the Aswan Low Dam having to carry their punts quite a while to come to the other side. In Wadi they get in touch “with a British officer who warned us of the hard work that was coming & entreated us to trek across land but we decided to carry on as we were. We started out from Wadi alright but soon `struck’ the second cataract. Here the punts had to be carried round & the provision boat unloaded. This was a great waste of time & we were able to sail fifteen miles that day.” It takes twenty days to reach Khartoum. “One day we had quite a thrill when a hungry lion stepped in our path. We quickly got our rifles all had a shot & all missed. This made the lion more furious & had not Jack intervened and shot it through the heart we should not have been alive to tell the tale. We each took some of its skin as a memento.” They rest for three days in Khartoum. And from there they abandon their boats and begin the trek to Lake Rudolf. They follow a caravan route along the Blue Nile. the author’s friend John James sprains his ankle but they “managed to find a French doctor who rubbed it with oils and bandaged it up tightly.” Going forward “our greatest handicap.was the tributaries that had to be crossed.” “Not long after we were over the first tributary we encountered linos. But horses had been trained for this and when they say the lions they laid down that for us to shoot over them. One lion dashed at Tommy and we all shot at it. We killed it all right but it fell on Tommy’s back legs and were three hours before we could get it off.” When they reach Lake Rudolf the author writes “our first job was to make friends with the natives which we easily did by giving them a few beads. We were very fortunate in being able to speak to them through Bouwee and Datchee…. Bouwee and Datchee asked them to make us six canoes and one raft for the horses and the food. They all worked like horses for the next few days and at last got them finished. Three of them came with us to propel the raft.” Crossing Lake Rudolf proves difficult especially at night. “We had a watch as usual but had a very uncomfortable night. Frequently during the night we were awakened by shots from the rifles which had to be fired to scare some animals that were coming too near the camp. They cross the lake in twenty days and reach Port Victoria and continue on foot through the jungle of present-day Tanzania. “We arrived at the source of the Luangwa River thirty days after we had set out from Mwanza and decided to make that our destination.” On their journey ‘back to the world’ they decide to sell their horses and return by boat through rivers and tributaries back to Cairo. They sell the horses to an English missionary. “It was very good going on the river. WE were sailing with the current and with wind at our backs. In this manner were able to do forty miles per day.” They then part with their trusted partners. “It took us nine days to reach Chinde where we had to part with Bouwee & Datchee. We offered them five pounds each but they would not take it all they wanted was the canoes which we gladly gave them and said goodbye. We waited a day at Chinde for a boat to Durban. At Durban we took an aeroplane to Khartoum where we reclaimed the punts and sailed down the river. We visited the Pyramids and then returned to work.” The cover of the book is a light brown patterned paper. It is in good condition showing very little age or wear. The author’s handwriting is in an easily legible script written in black ink. The author of the diary is not stated. No precise dates provided but the trip took several months.
