Gender discrimination hate speech and calls for genocide violent action with a furious premeditated and unrepentant murder attempt on one of the most famous artists of the 20th century promotion of violent anarchy with great scatological laughter programmed elimination or humiliation of half the human race.   In her misandrist pamphlet Scum manifesto ""Society for Cutting Up Men"" Valerie Solanas shows no empathy leaves no room for moderation or reconciliation and grants no exception to her project of eliminating all men except for ""men who methodically work toward their own elimination . such as drag queens who by their magnificent example encourage other men to demasculinize themselves and thus render themselves relatively harmless."" The first manifesto of radical feminism addresses not only women but also encompasses in its struggle the sexual identities rejected by the phallocratic society that Solanas wants to bring down with unprecedented rage for such a battle.   ""Life in this society being at best an utter bore and no aspect of society being at all relevant to women there remains to civic-minded responsible thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government eliminate the money system institute complete automation and destroy the male sex."" An introduction that in 1971 Emmanuelle de Lesseps undertaking a French version would translate as: ""Vivre dans cette société c'est au mieux y mourir d'ennui. Rien dans cette société ne concerne les femmes. Alors à toutes celles qui ont un brin de civisme le sens des responsabilités et celui de la rigolade il ne reste qu'à renverser le gouvernement en finir avec l'argent instaurer l'automation à tous les niveaux et supprimer le sexe masculin."" ""Living in this society means at best dying of boredom. Nothing in this society concerns women. So to all those who have a bit of civic-mindedness a sense of responsibility and of fun there remains only to overthrow the government finish with money establish automation at all levels and eliminate the male sex.""   At once an insurrectional political program paranoid delirium and poetic text Solanas's manifesto disturbs through its refusal to be confined within a genre—serious utopian or satirical. For the question posed by such a work may not be that of its morality but of its author's right to claim excess. Published after her murder attempt on Andy Warhol Solanas's terrible manifesto is the literary and literal assertion that man does not have a monopoly on violence.   Although it presents itself as a cry of anger written in urgency SCUM is in reality the fruit of two years of reflection and writing before being for lack of a publisher mimeographed by Solanas in 1967 and sold in the street $1 for women and $2 for men without meeting any success.   Seeking recognition Valerie Solanas then moves in the New York underground milieu and befriends the pope of counterculture Andy Warhol whose Factory she frequents. Unable to get her manifesto published ""the best text in all of history which will only be surpassed by my next book"" Solanas tackles her first literary work: Up your Ass a play she wants her mentor to produce. Unfortunately Warhol refuses the play and loses the unique manuscript. In compensation he offers his friend a role in two of his films. Solanas is not satisfied with this small artistic success and on June 3 1968 fires three times at Andy Warhol seriously wounding the artist and achieving fame at the same time. The young woman does not hide that her murderous gesture more than revenge against the artist is above all a political act and an artistic necessity to allow her to disseminate her work. On the title the printer's mark of Sebastianus Gryphius depicting a griffin which mythological animal symbolizes courage diligence watchfulness and rapidity of execution used as a pun of his family name Gryph or Greif. From the claws of this creature hangs a big rectangular stone symbolizing Constancy beneath which hangs a winged globe symbolizing Fortune. The motto is 'Virtute duce / comite fortuna' 'Virtue thy leader fortune thy comrade' a quote from a letter of Cicero to Plancus Epistulae ad Familiares liber X3 Condition: Vellum soiled and wrinkled. All four textile fastening ties gone. Both pastedowns damaged and detached. Front hinge partly loosening but holding. Front flyleaf removed. Faint dampstain in the first 5 quires. Some small old ink annotations. Right upper corner of leaf d3 p. 53/4 torn off without loss of text. Corners slightly bruised Note: The bibliographies of Schweiger Ebert and Graesse state that this 'Argonautica' edition of 1548 published by Sebastianus Gryphius is a reissue of the Valerius Flaccus edition of 1525 edited in Strassburg by Philippus Engentinus. This is not correct. In the first place this Gryphius has exactly the same title as the Aldus edition of 1523 which was produced by the Italian humanist scholar Giovan Battista Pio latinized as Ioannes Baptista Pius. It contains also the same text that is the preliminary pages the 'Argonautica' of Valerius Flaccus book I-VIII verse 467 and also a continuation of book VIII taken from Apollonius Rhodius' earlier Greek version of the 'Argonautica' translated into Latin by Ioannes Pius. At the end we find a Latin translation of an unknown hand of the 'Orphei Argonautica'. Pius' continuation of Book VIII to X starts where a premature death overtook Valerius Flaccus and prevented him to finish the epic. The poem breaks off abruptly with the pursuit of the Argo by Absyrtus brother of Medea. This continuation is repeated in our Gryphius edition of 1548 but is absent in the Strassburg edition of Engentius as are the preliminary pages. Furthermore the Strassburg edition ends at verse 466 of book VIII: 'Temptat & ipse gemens & tempora currere dictis. FINIS'. This line is the last but one in The Gryphius and Aldus edition in both the last verse is 467: 'mene aliquid metuisse putas me talia velle' The bibliographers were probably mislead by the adoption at the end by Gryphius of the dedication of Philippus Engentinus dated 1525 from his Strassburg edition. § Not much is known about the Roman poet Valerius Flaccus who wrote an epic 'Argonautica' and who died in 92 or 93 A.D. It is agreed by 'practically all modern authorities that the 'Argonautica' was never completed and that its imperfect conclusion must not be put down to mutilation of a manuscript or omission to complete a copy. There is plenty of internal evidence of unrevised work both in the language and the details of the plot and incidents. As to the former there are many passages where it is necessary to mark a lacuna or to supply a line to complete the sense'. Valerius Flaccus with an English translation by J.H. Mozley Cambr. Mass. 1972 p. VIII As all the poets of his time Valerius Flaccus was strongly influenced by Vergil but he 'is a better poet than they in so far he is less excessively rhetorical than Lucan and a more original genius than Statius'. OCD 2nd ed. p. 1105 His 'Argonautica' is indebted to the 'Argonautica' of the Greek poet Apollonius Rhodius who flourished ca. 200 B.C. but it is certainly not a close imitation. The differences are in the portrayal of the characters and the incidents in the story. 'The 'Orphei Argonautica' Orphic Argonautica was once believed to be among the oldest Greek poems but today it is known that the poem is the work of a late Antique author working in the fourth century CE or later and writing in a form of Greek that consciously imitated often wrongly the diction and vocabulary of Homer. The poem of 1376 hexameter verses takes the form of a first-person account of the Argonauts' voyage from the mouth of Orpheus who views himself as the hero addressing the poem to his disciple Musaeus. The poem . found fame in the early modern period along with other Orphic poetry as a prefiguration or distortion of Biblical truths'. 'The subject-matter of the nine books has no clearly defined plan but is divided under headings mostly moral or philosophical in character e.g. Omens Moderation Gratitude Chastity Cruelty which are usually illustrated by Roman domestica and foreign externa examples. . The work is shallow sententious and bombastic full of the boldest metaphor and rhetorical artifices of the Silver Age. . Yet the variety and convenience of the compilation ensured some measure of success in antiquity and considerably more in the Middle Ages'.
