One page the hand-colored lithographic map depicts the state in full with color coding according to county in the midst of the American Civil War with references to towns railroads villages depots swamps the territories of Native American tribes forts and battle sites related to the Seminole Wars Lake Okeechobee the Everglades Indian Hunting Grounds between Fort Poinsett and Key Biscayne Bay Tampa Bay and the Okefenokee Swamp. Additionally notes the course of a proposed canal route leading from Tampa to the Atlantic and the Arredondo Grant to the west of St. Augustine. An inset map in the lower left hand quadrant details the Florida Keys. Featuring the strapwork style border common to Johnson’s atlas work from 1860 to 1863. In near fine condition. Matted and framed. The entire piece measures 24 inches by 21.5 inches. Historical records indicate that Paleo-Indians entered Florida at least 14000 years ago by the 16th century the primary Native American tribes included the Apalachee of the Florida Panhandle the Timucua of northern and central Florida the Ais of the central Atlantic coast and the Calusa of southwest Florida with many smaller groups throughout what is now Florida. Florida was the first region of the continental United States to be visited and settled by Europeans. The earliest known European explorers came with the Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León who spotted and landed on the peninsula on April 2 1513 and named it La Florida in recognition of the verdant landscape and because it was the Easter season which the Spaniards called Pascua Florida. At various points in its colonial history Florida was administered by Spain and Great Britain and on March 3 1845 Florida was admitted as the 27th state of the Union. The principal location of the Seminole Wars the longest and most extensive of Indian Wars in United States history fought between 1816 and 1858 Florida declared its secession from the Union on January 10 1861 and was one of the seven original Confederate States. This famed California isolationist and progressive helped found the Progressive Party in 1912 and was chosen Theodore Roosevelt's running mate on that ticket in the 1912 presidential election; he served California as its 23rd governor 1911-17 and senator 1917-45. TNS 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC 25 April 1919. Addressed to S.R. Gaines. Very good. Some offsetting perhaps from long-ago newsprint contact with faint age toning and minor edgewear. On "United States Senate / Committee on Military Affairs" letterhead Johnson complies with an autograph request signing large and bold in full. Accompanied by a superb original 8½" X 6½" glossy black-and-white news agency photograph a closeup of cigar-chomping Johnson and another conferring. Newsprint text tipped to verso dates the image 9 July 1945 titles it "At Charter Hearing" and describes the scene: "At ratification hearing on the United Nations charter which opened today in Washington Senator Hiram Johnson of Cal. and Senator Tom Connally of Texas." Less than one month later -- on the same day the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima -- Johnson died. unknown

At The University Of California At Berkeley He Received His Bachelor Of Arts Degree With Honors In 1915 And His Juris Doctor In 1916 Doubling Up On Courses To Graduate In Half The Time Required. Transferring To The Judge Advocate General's Corps Jag From May To October 1916 He Served Under General John J. Pershing In Mexico With The Pancho Villa Expedition Then In Washington. Johnson Helped Co-Author The Regulations Implementing The Selective Service Act Of 1917. He Ordered Completed Several Of The Initial First Steps Needed To Implement The Draft Prior To Congressional Authorization. He Was Promoted To Colonel On January 8 1918 And To Brigadier General On April 15 1918 The Youngest Person To Reach The Rank Of Brigadier General Since The Civil War. Johnson Was Appointed Director Of The Purchase And Supply Branch Of The General Staff In April 1918 And To Assistant Director Of The Purchase Storage And Traffic Division Of The General Staff In October 1918. He Favorably Impressed Many Businessmen Including Bernard Baruch Head Of The War Industries Board. Johnson Was Named Assistant General Manager Of The Moline Plow Company On September 1 1919. In 1927 He Become An Adviser To Bernard Baruch. He Joined The Brain Trust Of Franklin D. Roosevelt In The 1932 Presidential Election. His Major Role Was Drafting Speeches Most Notably One That Fdr Delivered In Pittsburgh Denouncing The Reckless Spending Of The Hoover Administration And Calling For A Very Conservative Fiscal Policy. In 1933 Roosevelt Appointed Johnson To Administer The National Recovery Administration Nra. Big Business And Labor Unions Both Turned Hostile. The Nra Cursed At The Time Has Remained The Epitome Of Political Aberration Illustrative Of The Pitfalls Of "Planning" And Deplored Both For Hampering Recovery And Delaying Genuine Reform. He Distributed Copies Of A Fascist Tract Called "The Corporate State" By One Of Benito Mussolini's Favorite Economists Bruno Biagi Including Giving One To Frances Perkins And Asking Her To Give Copies To Roosevelt's Cabinet. Perkins Feared That Johnson Looked On Italian Fascist Corporativism As A Kind Of Model For The American Economy And She Convinced Roosevelt To Fire Him In September 1934. The Nra Continued To Deteriorate-It Was Abolished In 1935. Upon Leaving The Roosevelt Administration Johnson Who Had Long Been A Successful Essay Writer For National Magazines Now Became A Syndicated Newspaper Columnist Specializing In Political Commentary. He Supported Roosevelt In The 1936 Presidential Election But When The Court-Packing Plan Was Announced In 1937 He Denounced Roosevelt As A Would-Be Dictator. In 1939 He Endorsed Isolationism-Staying Out Of World War Ii; He Endorsed Wendell Willkie The Republican Candidate In The 1940 Presidential Election. Johnson Wrote A Number Of Articles And Stories. 1816. Very Good. 1 leaf folded dated Sept. 2 1816 from John Johnson Sussex Brigade Judge Advocate addressed to Jacob S. Thomson Brigade Paymaster Marksborough Marskboro N.J. Thomson is asked to collect the $50 fine from Captain Thomas M. Armstrong. Jacob S. Thomson was the paymaster of the Sussex Brigade in New Jersey. On July 2 Captain Thomas M. Armstrong had been found guilty of disobedience of orders and unbecoming conduct to his superior officer. The judge John Johnson 1764-1829 represented Sussex Co. in the New Jersey Assembly in 1804 and 1805 and was a judge of the Court of Common Pleas from 1816 to 1825. Color photograph of President Lyndon and First Lady Lady Bird Johnson couple in formal attire signed and inscribed to the deputy director of the FBI "To Deke de Loach-with our appreciation for your steadfastness and devotion to country-Lady Bird Johnson Merry Christmas! 1968" and "and Lyndon B. Johnson." A presidential seal green ribbon calling card and White House envelope are affixed to the reverse. Framed and in fine condition. The recipient Deke DeLoach worked at the FBI for nearly thirty years and in 1965 was promoted by Hoover to Deputy Director. During his post DeLoach was the third most senior official in the FBI after J. Edgar Hoover and Clyde Tolson and was the lead investigator in both the Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. assassinations. The entire piece measures 11.75 inches by 14.75 inches. Lyndon Baines Johnson was an American politician who served as the 36th President of the United States from 1963 to 1969 assuming the office after serving as the 37th Vice President of the United States under President John F. Kennedy from 1961 to 1963. A Democrat from Texas he previously served as a United States Representative from 1937 to 1949 and then as a United States Senator from 1949 to 1961. Woodring's Assistant Secretary of War 1937-40 felt betrayed when President Roosevelt didn't appoint him to the cabinet after Woodring's resignation in 1940 -- but when President Truman's first Secretary of Defense James V. Forrestal resigned in 1948 he became this country's second Secretary of Defense in 1949 only serving until 1950 when he resigned and paved the way for the illustrious George C. Marshall. Printed DS 3pp rectos only 8" X 12½" n.p. 1937. Very good. Lightly edgeworn with faint single horizontal fold at center; stapled at upper left. Marked "FUTURE RELEASE / Please Note Date" in red at top of first page the War Department press release is summarized at top: 'This address of The Honorable Louis Johnson The Assistant Secretary of War to be made at the Armistice Day Ceremonies at the National Memorial Amphitheater Arlington National Cemetery Virginia on November 11 1937." Johnson's speech begins "Another year has passed. Again we have stood in devout silence before the tomb of our Unknown Soldier. Again we have held communion with his immortal soul" and is a touching patriotic address that discusses at some length the U.S.'s military readiness in the face of turmoil in Europe. Jack Horner served as President of the White House Correspondents Association and covered Presidents from FDR to Gerald Ford. President Johnson often invited favored reporters to the LBJ Ranch including Horner on multiple occasions throughout his presidency. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Lyndon Baines Johnson was born on August 27 1908 near Stonewall Texas in a small farmhouse on the Pedernales River. He was the oldest of five children born to Samuel Ealy Johnson Jr. and Rebekah Baines. Johnson had English German and Ulster Scots ancestry. He was maternally descended from pioneer Baptist clergyman George Washington Baines who pastored eight churches in Texas as well as others in Arkansas and Louisiana.
