Maias. anno 1599' Condition: Nice copy some slight wear to the extremities just a bit of rubbing to the joints. Some small old ink marginalia. Last gathering slightly browning otherwise a clean and fresh copy Note: Lycophron 3rd cent. BC was called to Alexandria in Egypt by King Ptolemaeus Philadelphos. There this tragedian wrote his 'Alexandra' or Kassandra ca. 1474 iambic trimeters in which Kassandra tells about the fall of Troy and the fates of the Greek and Trojan Heroes. It is his only surviving work which is full of the extreme and designed obscurity that the Alexandrians who were fond of a style full of learned allusions and playful riddles loved. Rose calls the 'Alexandra' a monstruous riddle. 'In form it is the speech of a messenger a servant of Priam . coming to tell his master that Kassandra = Alexandra has just delivered a mysterious oracle. . The prophecy concerns the whole history of Troy the Trojans and their descendants together with the fates of the Greeks for many generations to come and from beginning to end it calls nothing and no one by any wellknown name personal or geographical'. For instance Lycophron calls the mythical hero Heracles the 'Lion of the triple evening' expecting the reader to know that Heracles when he was begotten the night was thrice its normal length. § This edition of 1599 is a revised and improved second edition. The first edition was produced two years earlier in 1597 by the then 18 years old Dutchman Joannes Meursius or in Dutch 'Jan van Meurs' 1579-1639. He was a student of the genius Joseph Justus Scaliger born in 1540 who lectured since 1593 in Leiden till his death in 1609. Scaliger helped and encouraged his pupil in the production of this edition. In the preface Meursius tells us that he wouldnot have dared to edit such a dark and difficult text without the help of Scaliger. Scaliger helped him with the commentary and gave him permission to reprint his verse translation with corrections. This metrical and smooth Latin translation had been published previously in Basel in 1566. The last 251 pages of the book contain the commentary of Meursius 'quod sine interprete vix est ut quisquam intellegat'. preface leaf A8 recto Meursius was later appointed professor of History and of Greek 1610/13 at his own university. He is best known for his editions of byzantine authors and for the books he wrote on the history of ancient Greece for example on festivals Eleusis and the antiquities of Athens and Attica. This bibliographical giant president of the American Library Association and the Bibliographical Society of America was a fixture at the New York Public Library serving as manager of the manuscript division chief reference librarian assistant director and finally director 1934-41; among his many books is "The History of the New York Public Library" 1923. Partly-printed DS 1p 5½" X 8½" New York NY 1940 June 24. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. On "New York Public Library" letterhead this form letter partly typed in acknowledges and thanks a book gift to the library -- in this case Gates' privately published booklet "Amberglow of Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutledge." Lydenberg's miniscule signature could easily be mistaken for printed but is actually authentic and original. unknown

1836 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN AUTOGRAPH ALBUM INCLUDING MANY NOTED DELAWARE RELIGIOUS AND POLITICAL FIGURES
GEORGETOWN DELAWARE DE. Good. 1836. On offer is a super 1836 handwritten autograph album of Lydia W. Cullen daughter of Elisha Dickerson Cullen a noted American lawyer and politician from Georgetown Delaware. Elisha the father was born in 1799. Educated at Princeton College and admitted to the bar in 1821. Elected to congress in 1854 and died in Georgetown in 1862. His sons Lydia's brothers were also prominent politicians and lawyers. The album includes 27 handwritten pages some blanks and a number of engravings and one page of beautiful work original art and flourishing. One section in mid-eastern style script transcribed in English for Lydia whose author signs it "William Ramsey" who appears to be the Reverend William Ramsey who published a book the same year this journal was written called "Journal of a missionary tour in India" about women in India and how they are treated. Included is a message from Reverend Abraham DeWitt from Lewes Delaware. Mr. DeWitt was one of the oldest Presbyterian ministers of the county as well as one of the oldest citizens of Cecil County. He was born in 1798 also attended Princeton Theological Seminary and was licensed to preach in 1831. On November 14 1834 he became the pastor of Lewes Cool Springs and Indian River churches in Delaware. An Anna DeWitt also signed the album. Research suggests Lydia died in "early womanhood" and the 1850 Delaware census shows her still living being 25 years of age. She must have died shortly after the census was taken. The album measures about 6 ½" x 8 ½" and is worn and in fair condition. There is a good deal of foxing on the pages and a few of the pages in the beginning suffered water damage mildly at one time. Some slight foxing Note: Johannes Laurentius Lydus was born in 490 AD at Philadelphia in Lydia hence the cognomen Lydus. He came to Constantinople during the reign of the Emperor Anastasius ca. 510 to make a career in the central administration. For 40 year he was 'Praefectus Praetorio' for the greater part under the Emperor Justinian. The language of the administration of the Eastern part of the Roman Empire was still Latin at this time and Lydus repeatedly emphasizes his bilingualism in his surviving works which are written in ancient Greek. Ca. 543 he was appointed to the chair of Latin-rhetoric at the 'University' of Constantinople. In 552 Lydos retired. He died between 565 and 578. Among his lost literary works is a history of Justinian's campaign against the Persian Sassanids. His 3 surviving Greek works are not great literature but they throw light on Roman history and religion. 'De Ostentis' 'On Prodigies' is a treatise on all sorts of signs and and portents e.g. thunder and lightning and earthquakes compiled from ancient astrologic works. 'De Mensibus' is a compilation of material on the Roman calender and pagan festivals. His most important work is 'De Magistratibus reipublicae Romanae' on the civil service of the Roman empire. It offers valuable information concerning Roman burocracy up to Justinian. § These works were regarded as lost until we are told in the 'Prologus' the French scholar J.B.C. d'Ansse de Villoison discovered in 1784 on a visit to Constantinople a manuscript of it. The manuscript was thereupon presented by the Greek prince Constantine Morusi to Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier the French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. Choiseul then lent the manuscript to the discoverer in order to publish it. Nothing came however of an edition because of turmoils of the French revolution regni Gallici eversione et subito casu quo Europa omnis contremit nullus Lydo locus superat and because of the premature and sudden death of Villoison in 1805. p. LXIII/IV Choiseul then directed the young scholar Carl Benedikt Hase in French Charles Benoît Hase 1780-1864 to produce an edition. In 1801 Hase had travelled on foot to Paris where he began his studies Greek under Villoison who introduced him also into his literary circle. domum ejus frenquentavi . per aliquot annos continuos sermonum auditor. p. LXVI After the request of Choiseul Hase asked his friend the young scholar Dominicus Fuss 1782-1860 also of German origin who was fluent in Latin to make a transcription and a Latin translation cura describendi vertendique of 'De magistratibus'. Fuss also amended emendavit the Greek text. Hase himself wrote the 'Prologus' a learned dissertation on the times life and writings of Lydus. The edition was welcomed by the famous German ancient historian Barthold Georg Niebuhr as a new and rich source of Roman history. Hase who was appointed professor of Palaeography at the 'École Royale' in 1816 devoted himself to Byzantine literature and history. In 1823 he produced an edition of Lydus' 'De ostentis' which is considered a masterpiece of textual criticism Provenance: Pictorial bookplate 'Ex libris Collegii Sanctae Mariae de Oscott' pasted on the front pastedown. The Lykens Valley Railroad and Coal Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1830; Thomas P. Cope was the first president. It ran from Millersburg to Williamstown and was the fourth in the United States and the first in Dauphin County to carry anthracite coal. By 1845 the line had to be regraded and relaid. It merged into the Penndel Co. in 1956. Written at the head of the front wrapper: "Preserve with Care." Very scarce. In Good- Condition: wrapper is lightly soiled; front wrapper is detached but present with closed 4-cm. tear from gutter edge; somewhat brittle with chipping at edges and separations at gutters; a few notations internally; otherwise clean. Miller Falls Massachusetts. Good. 1891. On offer are two 2 110 year old diaries / journals / manuscripts handwritten by Lyman O. Gunn who lived in the Deerfield / Millers Falls Massachusetts area with his wife and children. Lyman was born December 27 1834 and he died December 14 1912. At the age of 27 he enlisted in the Civil War on September 4 1862. He served in the 16th Vermont Infantry Regiment. He married Mary Almira Nims on January 2 1866 in Montague Massachusetts. Mary was born September 7 1836 and died March 5 1923. They had one child together Carrie May Gunn who died at a young age. They also seem to have adopted children. Mr. Gunn wrote his name & where he lived in the front of this diary. This diary measures 3" x 4.75". There are about 260 days that have handwritten entries in pencil. Here are a few excepts from the diary: " . Mr. Oliver died today. Went up to help lay him out . Mr Wheeler was struck by the engine this morning and badly brused up but not fataly I think . Mary went to Montague after a new buggie that we bought of Davis . Swaped horses with Ed Hunter . Julia was taken bleeding from the stomach about 11 oc. last night think she bled 3 pts Dr does not think she will live till morning . Julia is very low again today but is liable to bleed again at any time but has not bled any since 5 oc. this morning. She cannot eat anything her food distresses her so . Drawed 6 loads of ice. Albert Holmes sawed ice 1/2 day . Went to town meeting old board of officers were all reelected . Sent for Dr Dean for Rodney he is not well . Went in persuit of a hired man . Went to Severett and hired Western Grant for 7 or 8 months . Mrs Brown and her 2 children came to spend a few days with us until the diptheria abates at home in Orange . Helped Mr Briggs move his corn house in forenoon got accrost the road before noon . Went to Dr Litch funeral. He was burried by the Sir Night Masons . The committee to make arrangements for Memorial Day met in the engine hall this eve decided not to hold camp fire at Millers Falls this year . We went to cousin Laura Clapps funeral. She left 4 boys and two girls . Went down and got carpet looking glass bought of L.A. Holton . Rodneys ox died while plowing for me . Jim the Irishmen worked 2 days and left . Went down to Reubens to work on carriage top. Anthony went with me . We started with Reuben & family about 9:00 for Vermont. drove as far as Putner and stayed over night . sstayed during a shower with Mr Washburn & sister. He was 81 she 86. Had a pleasant visit with them . Very hard traveling drove to Downers Hotel in Wethersfield. Saw the skin of a cat a mount killed nearby said to be second one killed in the state . Went to Gettiesburg to a reunion of the 16th Vermont Regiment & the dedication of the reg. monument . Left Gettiesburg for home . Had a good visit with her & cousin Harriett. Found Mr Willses folks better than I expected. She has 2 large cansers . Voted straight Republican ticket . Got a letter from cousin H___ saying that Julia could live but few days . Went to Orange bought suit of clothes & an overcoat of dexter. Also cuff boots of C.W. ATTU ALEUTIAN ISLANDS ALASKA. Good. 1943. On offer is an original manuscript WWII diary handwritten by Lyndell Irving Price of Hillview Illinois. The five year diary has a total of 375 entries spread out over the years 1943 1944 and 1945 with the majority of the entries during 1944 his 2nd year in the service. Price who would one day be a Sergeant began his service and moved into a Military Police role soon after. He was stationed on the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. Collectors and historians of World War II will appreciate the candor of Mr. Price given the lack of censorship that letters would face. Few MPs would be as open and candid as our author is to his diary. Here are some snippets: "In Anchorage Alaska. Made New Years Res. to quit gambling for money with cards & dice. 3 civilians were killed in snow This makes around 8 or 9 men killed and several injured in snow slides. Leaving for Mt. McKinley tomorrow. Went to dance at Bloody Bucks. Snow to deep wind is terrible sometimes 100 mph. Blow truck off road once. Made it back ok. On guard. Gamble tonight lost $122.50. Also had 3 qts. of whiskey. Harbor full of ships mostly destroyers and cruisers. Northern end of Karile Islands has been catching hell lately. INVASION SOON I'M SURE. Same routine with prisoners. Navy sank two Jap subs last night. Bomber been taking off all day. Co. had a beer party. Three Red Cross women present. Paid $52.00 debt. Saturday night. celebrate Easter which is tomorrow. JOE LOUIS arrived today. Invade Mariana's Island. Japan proper bombed. I left with advance party early this morning to San Francisco. Left Frisco harbor at 9am. Destination unknown for sure. We believe Kiski or Attu. Big rain today as road fell thru and a bridge washed out. Our provast marshall was promoted from 1st Lt. to Captain. He passed out Optimo cigars. Landed on Attu in morning. Went to see legal associate advisor lawyer at 4:00 about . Things began to look like something. Smith and I got 2 cases of beer. Old ink inscription on the title reading: 'The Society of Clerks to the Signet' Note: The speeches of the Athenian orators Lysias c. 459-380 B.C. and Isocrates 436-338 B.C. are of great importance for the understanding of the great political issues of the 4th century. Their speeches provide us with a most valuable insight in and commentary on the social and political events in Athens. 'Taken separately their writings are imperfect; when combined they afford a system of information equally extensive and satisfactory'. Preface p. pi3 recto. The English translation of 18 speeches of Lysias and 6 of Isocrates by the Scottish classical scholar and ancient historian John Gillies 1747-1836 is mentioned one of his major contributions to classical scholarship. 'In the long preliminary discourse on the history and private lives and manners of the Greeks during the period 404 to 338 B.C. Gillies specifically adopted Isocrates as his source partly no doubt because it suited his own strongly monarchist views to do so'. This armed conflict between Great Britain and its 13 North American colonies raged from 1775 till 1783 during which the colonies declared in July 1776 independence as the United States of America. The authority of the two Athenian orators Robins says overrules and rectifies that of the contemporary Athenian orator Demosthenes and that of the late antique historian/philosopher Plutarch and others 'on the basis of which some of the most ingenious eighteenth-century writers had raised flattering accounts of Greek virtue and glory. Their speeches moreover contain compelling evidence of the violence prejudice and corruption of the ancient Greeks and of the shortcomings of ancient republican institutions. Contemporary half brown shagreen binding. The leather of volume 2 although in similar shagreen is of a lighter brown. Spine with raised bands decorated with blind and gilt fillets. The 1867 Universal Exhibition also called the Universal Exhibition of Art and Industry is chronologically the seventh universal exhibition and the second taking place in Paris after that of 1855. It was held from April 1 to November 3 1867 on the Champ-de-Mars in Paris. 41 countries were represented at the exhibition including Japan for the first time. This exhibition would above all be a demonstration and display of the splendor and power of the Second Empire. Desired by Napoleon III he appointed key figures from economic and political life to head the exhibition. The Champ de Mars was chosen as the location. It received 15 million visitors.
