Marshal de Castries and Marquis de Vogué called upon Anquetil to restore authentic and reliable memoirs and render justice to one of Louis XIV's greatest generals; they lent him for this purpose 142 notebooks of memoirs of 32p. folio and 14 volumes of letters. Anquetil therefore undertook a vast work of compilation and made the Duke speak in the first person using the letters as aid. ‎EVANSTON IL. Good. 1931. On offer is an original fascinating and rather chatty diary of the granddaughter of the most prominent architect in the United States at the beginning of the 20th Century. Measuring 5.5 inches by 3.75 inches this 5-year diary contains 365 pages. It is essentially 100% complete. The leatherette cover is in good condition with a slight water stain on the back cover. All pages are intact. The handwriting is legible. Margaret Burnham was born in 1914 and grew up in Evanston IL. Her diary covers the years 1932 through 1936. Her father Hubert Burnham was the oldest son of Daniel H. Burnham the most prominent architect in the United States during his professional career 1872-1912. The impact that Daniel Burnham had on cityscapes across America and overseas cannot by overstated. Burnham essentially created the profession of Urban Planner and brought architecture from a drafting job to a fully-recognized profession. He was a member of the "Chicago School" of architecture. Together with his partner John Root they built the largest architectural firm in the world. His buildings include the first skyscraper - the Montauk Block in Chicago. Other famous buildings followed including such as the Masonic Temple the Rookery Building and the Field Museum Chicago Ellicott Square Buffalo Union Station Washington DC Selfridges London and the famous triangular-shaped Flatiron Building in New York City. He was appointed Director of Works for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. Chicago World's Fair Burnham had responsibility for overseeing and completing construction for some 150 buildings on more than 600 acres 240 hectares of land. In little more than two years Burnham created America's most spectacular world's fair of the 19th century. He led a workforce numbering as many as 10000 reviewed guidelines for the many state buildings and supervised the fair's infrastructure including transportation sewage and clean water delivery systems. Nicknamed the "White City" the fair's grand Neoclassical buildings were planned as a cohesive whole in a landscaped setting; they made a lasting impression on millions of visitors. Often noted as the inspiration for the City Beautiful movement the fair was a turning point both for Burnham and for the development of the modern American city. Margaret's father Hubert studied at the U.S. Naval Academy earning a degree in Science. He served in WWI and was in charge of construction of naval bases in France. Prior to the war he worked alongside his brother Daniel Jr. in their fathers firm as architects. After their father's death they left and set up their own architectural firm - Burnham Brothers. This was the creative and dynamic family that Margaret grew up in and where she enjoyed a life of affluence. She attended boarding schools in Switzerland and Paris and made her debut in Chicago in the late 1920s. She then moved to New York City where she became a model She later married Neil Williams had two sons and moved to Palm Springs California. She was divorced and later married Peter Legrow. Margaret Burnham passed away in 2009 at the age of 95. This diary covers her life from age 18-22. Her diary begins in 1932 with her enjoying activities with her family and friends: "Church A.M. and again to a mystery play at St. Lukes. Enjoyed New York Symphony concert - Horowitz playing Rachmaninoff symphony." Jan 3 1932. "School reopened. Errand in town - to mama's for dinner - to mass meeting at Stadium on tax situation" Jan 4 1932. "Downtown A.M on errands. Home rest of day listening to music etc. Gordon John Suite" Mar 26 1932. "Went to board room with Miss Haff for our checks. With Matie this evening." June 25 1932. In the summer of 1933 she and a group of friends took a trip 6 week from Evanston IL down into the deep South. She makes a number of observations in her daily entries: "Left La Grange GA early. Negro women with baskets of laundry on heads walking roads. West Point GA for breakfast. Through Alabama plantations - negros & watermelons - unpainted cabins and crepe Visited Montgomery home of Jeff Davis Jefferson Davis was the first and only President of the Confederacy. Sat afternoon negro market - rickety" July 22 1933. The entries continue in this vein over the entire 5 years. She has a busy social life as a result of her family's business success. In addition to her active social life she records her interests as well as various family doings. A social historian would see this as an excellent window into the world of the affluent professional/business class in America during the grinding years of the Great Depression. The two books are written by one Margaret Hulsey of Baltimore Maryland a seemingly deeply religious Quaker woman. The first book is very unique collection of hymns letters diary entries and first-hand accounts dealing with the deaths Ms. Hulsey’s family friends and loved ones. The book begins with a short passage that lays out what much of the book with deal with: death. “The first link in the family circle was broken many years ago in the removal of a beloved child at the early age of two years. But as this occurred long before the recovery of the younger children they of course have no recollection of the bereavement - To the ____ parents there was much of consolation in the reflection that their little one was ‘taken from the evil to come’ before sin had sullied the innocence of childhood. Died Nov. 30th. 1826. John Clapp - Jr. aged 1 year. 11 months. And 4 days.” Following this are pages and pages of Christian hymns poems and descriptions of grief and bereavement in the face of death both of the young child mentioned and also of someone who was presumably Ms. Hulsey’s brother. This is an interesting and unique book as much of the diary entries are written in the 3rd-person as if the author is collecting these stories of grief as a family history “An unspeakably heavier bereavement was in store for them in the death of their eldest son at the age of 32 years. Gentle and affectionate in childhood he had endeared himself to the family circle in no common manner and as he grew up to man’s estate his strongly masked character cultivated mind and clear judgement gave promise of a bright career of usefulness. During the last few years of his life particularly the all pervading influence of Christian principle was most strikingly displayed. When his bright prospect in life were clouded he weakly bowed to the dispensation and received it as a token of his Heavenly Father’s love.Died in New York on the morning of the 11th of 12th month 1848. Family H. Clapp aged 32 years. 1 month and 3 days.” The book is filled with long descriptions of family members friends and loved ones who met their deaths too early. “About six months after our dear brother’s death my warmest sympathies were weakened by the decline and removal of a beloved young friend and connection in Philadelphia - We had spent several weeks together the preceding summer in a little town.and I had learned to love and advise her gentle Christian character - The following letter speaking of her illness was from the pen of a sister.” Many of the entries in the book are like this one letters collected by Ms. Hulsey and then faithfully copied down in this book as a remembrance of someone loved who has passed. Alongside the letter are hymns and poems of a Christian nature and quotations and aphorisms taken from “The Friend’s Review” that speak to the nature of death and the overcoming of grief through Christian love. The same format is used for the deaths of Margaret Hulsey’s brother friends and longest of all her mother. Near the end of the book there are also letters that had been sent specifically to Ms. Hulsey that are copied down well-wishes and condolences from friends on the event of her mother’s death. This book has roughly 200 pages of which almost everyone has writing. Margaret Hulsey’s handwriting is neat and very legible and no smudging is evident. The first few gatherings of the book are detached from the spine but the whole thing is sewn together so the pages are not loose. Quarter leather spine with a marbled cover page. The second book is “Some extracts from the letters and diary of our beloved mother” and is also written in the hand of Margaret Hulsey. Beginning in September 1848 and continuing until her death in 1857 the book contains copies of letters sent from to family members especially Margaret as well as entries from her personal diary some short and others extending many pages. The thread throughout the diary entries is the love of Jesus and her worship of him through the Quaker church. “Baltimore - 3rd mo. - First day - ‘attended mtg. After sitting a short time in silence. L. M. Hoag appeared in present supplication - He soon of towards ___ with the words. “Ye are lively stones built up a spiritual house” carrying out the figure by applying it to stones in the quarry which must first be taken out then hammered and brought into the proper shape afterwards smoothed and polished - He was continuing the application when the mtg. Was disturbed by the sudden indisposition of H. Baldesion. In about ten minutes he resumed his discourse without any apparent confusion and embarrassment and preached an excellent sermon.” About a quarter of the book are entries from 1848-1850 and then the rest of the book is from March 1857 the beginning of the decline and death of Margaret’s mother. The first entry in 1857 concerns Margaret’s mother and father’s decision to leave America for England. Their trip to England is interesting with Margaret’s mother ruminating on her life on the sea the friends she has left behind and the future ahead for her. “Rested very well - It seems as if the motion of the boat reduces drowsiness at least this has been the effect on me - We spend much time on deck wishing to cherish all the advantages possible from the sea air. And we go up on the principle of eating at every meal even if we feel but little appetite. We passed a steamer last night supposed to be the Arctic. It gives a social gladsome feeling to pass a ship at sea. We have already seen two sails but they were distant we were unable to learn where they were from or whither bound.” When they arrive in London there are many passages of their new life there attending new Quaker Friend’s Meetings and making new friendships as well as trips to other cities to spread the word of Jesus. After 3 months they return “Just 3 months since we left the shores of America - It seems a brief space now that it is past - Soon went on deck - all things were put in ample order - the floor was scrubbed the brasser cleaned the sun was shining brightly - the broad experience of ocean before us with scarcely a ripple on the surface while our noble ship was ploughing through the waters with majestic steadiness.” Soon the diary entries end and Hulsey’s point of view takes over again: “Our dear Mother felt the heat of the water excruciatingly.soon after she accompanied Father to Phila. And Baltimore to visit their children - It was unspeakable pleasure to her to meet them again.She accordingly accompanied the family to Cape May.At the end of ten days she had a strange and alarming attack of dysentery. It yielded to medicine however but a relapse a week later placed her in a very critical situation.On First day Dr. Chesterman was called - he fully agreed with Dr. Rabson and discovered a new feature in the disease which had now assumed the character of bilious diarrhea”. The mother continues to be sick and weakens to a terrible extent. Margaret Hulsey’s description of her mother is heartbreaking and she goes into long details of the last night of her mother’s death and her eventual passing away: “The breath grew shorter and shorter and the quietly passed away without a struggle - at the same hour of the day as that beloved son who had only preceded her by about three years.” The last few pages of the book are transcripts and copies of remarks made at her mother’s funeral and an obituary of her mother in the “Friend’s Review”. The book is roughly 170 pages in length of which 150 or so have writing. It looks almost identical to the first book both of them having a small sticker on the front inside cover that reads “Sold at Raynor’s Bookstore 76 Bowery NY.” No pages have detached from the spine. ‎PURDUE UNIVERSITY LAFAYETTE INDIANA IN. Good. 1925. On offer is an exceptional diary of the personal life of a young woman in the mid 1920s who perfectly embodies the Aesthetic and ideas of the “Flapper”. The diary is extremely personal in nature and showcases an amazing view into the life of a woman on the vanguard of a new generation of women. The diary provides fascinating insight into the mind of a young women during the 1920’s “Gilded Age”. As can be seen throughout the diary she definitely embodies the ‘liberated’ woman ideal of the time: attending University dating several men at a time hinting at casual sexual encounters and maintaining a strong individualistic streak throughout. The diary is packed with details about her ever changing and active love life. The diary belonged to Margaret Elliott a sophomore at Purdue University circa 1925. There are many entries dealing with Sorority life as she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega and briefer entries about her studies. Nevertheless the majority of the diary concerns her relationships with men and almost every page has some discussion of her thoughts about dating the personalities of boyfriends how she met them what shows they have attendedand in cases hint at sexual encounters There are also very personal entries dealing with periods of depression and times where she questions her own inability to be with just one partner and her constantly changing state of mind when it comes to her many suitors. Elliott is in so many relationships throughout the diary that it can be hard to keep track of all the names. This is an intensely personal diary of a very active young woman who represents a very new and exciting period in American history as well as women’s history in general. The diary is a fascinating read. In all it contains 368 handwritten pages. Her handwriting is very easy to read usually done in either blue ink and occasionally pencil and can be quite dense as she often takes up the entire page with her thoughts and observations. Most entries also have a small quote at the top of the page. These quotes also show an important part of Elliott’s intellectual life as many of them are from prominent feminist writers and thinkers of the time such as Sarah Grand and Margaret Widdemer as well as poets such as Tennyson Kipling and others. The last three pages also contain a number of quotes and passages and poems mostly dealing with love and womanhood. Some of the quotes also show distinct feminist thought such as: “Man may redeem the past but woman never can” “Does a woman ever marry the man who is kindest to her It is unrecorded if this has ever happened” and “There is no such thing as justice in the world!” This is one of the most personal diaries listed here. It’s definitely the type of diary that encourages the reader to turn the page and read on. The book is in good shape. The front cover and portions of the spine show a good bit of wear and tear from use and age. There are also two bits of tape on the diary that Elliott used to close off the diary from other people. It is evident Elliott thought this diary to be absolutely personal. The front cover reads “Personal. Hands off! Eyes off!” Samples of Entries: “Jan 181925. Slept until 12 o'clock Dreamed I was at home. Got up and ate dinner. Dot called up. She is a good old scout. Pinkie was not at the dance last nite but sang a serenade outside while Tex was here Oh My ! I suppose he was drunk! Rode right across the aisle in the St so confront him yesterday he couldn’t look anywhere but the window. If he wanted to come back I wonder what I’d do Tex! called me about his “ Pain “ and his episode “ last night. Here to be another horrible morning I fear.”; “Jan 311925. Had a somewhat serious conversation with Chris and he thinks “ I care an awful lot for someone else” I told him i didn't and I don’t think I do. Anyhow I could live without them all. He was not expecting me to go back Sunday P.M. and I did feel momentarily sorry for him. The show was “What Man Desires” and had for it’s “theme” Girls strive to be what the man they love ; thinks and wants them to be” it is very true I guess. I wonder wonder and wonder!”; “Jan 28 1925. Got home last night about 6:30 car broke and we had to transfer making 45 mins late. Read last night and heard all the news. Got up late this morn have a date tonight with Feister and am not at all crazy about seeing him bet I hate him before evening is done. Went to see Conrad Nagel and Lou Cody in “So this is Marriage.“ Bible picture was pretty but story and theme was bunk. Saw no one I knew.”; “Jan 29 1925. Got up and wrote a letter to Tex! Hope he appreciates it but he won’t. Received no letters from La Fayette yet so guess he is still ok. Harvey Kendall is going to write me if he takes sick so is Claude. Had a miserable evening last night. I’m growing to hate Feister as I hate them all around here. He can’t help it or know it I think . I wouldn't let him near me. He makes me shriek Ugh! If he knew!”; “Feb5 1925. Tex gets out of Quarantine Oh ! Tex got out Wed am at 10’o clock. He did call me and came over just as I hoped. We danced awhile and acted crazy then shut the door and talked. He said people didn't fall in love by seeing so much of each other but by being separated awhile. He said he realized he loved me when i was gone Skeetz was here with Lou and he hardly knew what to make of us I'll bet Tex was so mean and teased me all evening. We had a peach of a time. I asked him to out.”; “June 71925. “Nat” didn't leave till 3 am it was just light as day. He doesn't trust or love me now. But maybe he will get over it. It made me feel badly but I am not worrying it was wrong but - We went to the mixer for a little while Sat night it was an Alumni mixer big crowd but didn't know many people. Nat came over and took me to the Fauter- for dinner all showed up in full style and it sure was good. Came home and tried to make up with him but he wouldn't get over it till I got mad!”; “July 131925. Blue Monday ! I feel depressed lost as if I had forgotten something I can’t figure out the cause. Nat is better but is still on crutches till Wed or Thursday He is going to make me write him an invitation before he will come to see me ! Sensitive nature again ! I like him for it I mailed him a letter today and am going to write tonight again One day! M came and told me lots of News!!!”; “Aug 261925. There is something wrong with me this week I feel entirely different towards Nat. His letters don’t even interest me Oh diary am I wicked or so terribly different from other girls in that I can’t like one man alone It seems there must be two before I’m happy.When I get a letter from Nat I am looking for one from Tex. I almost get mad at Nat. I have been writing him short letters because I can’t think of a thing to say.” Historical Notes: This was the age of the “Flapper”. Flappers were a generation of young Western women in the 1920s who wore short skirts bobbed their hair listened to jazz and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. Flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup drinking treating sex in a casual manner smoking driving automobiles and otherwise flouting social and sexual norms. Flappers had their origins in the liberal period of the Roaring Twenties the social political turbulence and increased transatlantic cultural exchange that followed the end of World War I as well as the export of American jazz culture to Europe. The flapper stands as one of the most enduring images of youth and new women in the twentieth century and is viewed by Americans as something of a cultural heroine nowadays. However back in the 1920s many Americans regarded flappers as threatening to conventional society representing a new moral order. Although most of them were the daughters of the middle class they flouted middle-class values.
