One 13-line five 6-line and numerous 3-line woodcut initials all designed by Morris engraved by William Harcourt Hooper. <p>A story taken from "Nouvelles Francoises en prose du XIIIe siecle" written earlier by Morris as "Amys & Amillion" and intended at first for appearance in the second volume of 'The Earthly Paradise'. Amis and Amile were two medieval knights who were devoted friends and this is the story of their friendship which led Amile to slay his own children for the sake of his friend. Of course this supreme sacrifice meant that the children were not dead after all. Eventually the two knights were killed in the same battle and a miracle was added to the end of the story as although they were buried apart from each other the two coffins were found side by side the next morning. Gilt-stamped decoration on front board and mirror blind-stamped decoration on back board. Boards have bevelled edges. All page edges gilt. Dark brown endpapers. Pages 3-31 are printed on recto only. This booklet was probably given to the guests at the celebration of the 10th wedding anniversary of Mary Harris and Wistar Morris. The 10th anniversary is traditionally the tin anniversary which would be observed by a present of a tin bank containing railroad government or other bonds. Instead in this case it contained the poem written presumably by Wistar Morris to celebrate their anniversary as well as a shorter poem he had written 10 years earlier to welcome her to Green Hill Farm. Mary Harris Morris 1836-1924 was on the board of managers of the Orphan's Asylum of Philadelphia and the Howard Home for women discharged from prison; she also opened a school for girls in Tokyo in 1890. Wistar Morris 1815-1891 was a founder of Morris Tasker & Co. in Philadelphia a director of the Pennsylvania Railroad president of the Pennsylvania Hospital board a trustee of Haverford College and founder of the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle Pa. Their home Green Hill Farm was sold to Friends' Central School in 1925. Very scarce. "Lecture III: Some Hints on Pattern-Designing" was delivered by Morris at the Working Men's College London on December 10 1881.<p>The book was finished on the fourth day of October 1899.<p>An important essay which "summarizes succinctly views which would apply equally well to any branch of applied art." As Walter Crane wrote of Morris's far-reaching aesthetic philosophy "if it has not turned all British craftsmen into artists or all British artists into craftsmen it has done not little to expand and socialize the idea of art and perhaps it is not too much to say has made the tasteful English house with its furniture and decorations a model for the civilized world." "Morris bought 'the whole making' of the Whatman paper on which this book is printed and used the balance for catalogues and prospectuses when he founded his own Kelmscott Press. This book so satisfied its author that he never reprinted the work at his Kelmscott Press. He declared it to be the best-looking book issued since the seventeenth century." Colbeck II p.582. Morris wrote to Georgie Burne-Jones on 16 November 1889: "I am so pleased with my book -- typography binding and I must say it literary matter -- that I am any day to be seen huggling it up and am become a spectacle to Gods and men because of it." LeMire p.134.<p>The story is set in Burgdale a small Germanic settlement in a valley at the foot of a mountain range and the neighboring woodlands pastures and dales. The area is inhabited by the interdependent Dalemen who are weavers smiths and traders the Woodlanders who are hunters and carpenters and the Shepherds. Their society is challenged by disruptions from the outside world in the form of the Sons of the Wolf the descendants of the Wolfings from the previous novel and the invading Dusky Men the Huns. The Sons of the Wolf driven from their original country by the Dusky Men continue to resist the invaders as a frontier force guarding their new home. The somewhat troubled integration of the Sons of the Wolf into the society they are protecting is told in the story of five lovers representing both peoples four of whom eventually marry.<p>Morris projected a sequel to THE ROOTS OF THE MOUNTAINS to be called THE STORY OF DESIDERIUS but he never completed it. Morris engraved more than forty wood blocks of Burne-Jones's illustrations. But their ambitious plans were never brought to completion as a whole. These 44 wood engravings survived and are here printed for the first time with the text of the poem. Original tinplate cover with colored paper cover leather backplate and head gold cut. Some of the original Troy types from the Kelmscott Press now in the Cambridge University Press Collection were used along with additional types cast at the foundry of the Oxford University Press from the original matrices in the possession of the Cambridge University Press. Text design and printing by Will and Sebastian Carter. Wells praised the book and compared Morris to Malory admiring his style writing: "All the workmanship of the book is stout oaken stuff that must needs endure and preserve the memory of one of the stoutest cleanest lives that has been lived in these latter days." It was highly influential on all subsequent fantasy literature including inspiring latter fellow Oxford writers C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien and is among the most important proto-fantasy works ever penned. Recognizable influence abound such as "ancient tables of stone" "Gandolf" a "King Peter" and a marvelous white horse named "Silverfax" namesake if not exact of "Shadowfax." A rare work and important resource on Mexican architecture and pottery by Elizabeth Cutter Morrow on Cuernavaca Mexico where she and her husband U.S. Senator Dwight Morrow who was Ambassador to Mexico from 1927 to 1930 bought adjoining plots to build a house inspired by the local historic architecture. The book is divided into three sections. Section one describes the town of Cuernavaca. Section two contains architectural plans and details for the home and gardens. Section three contains photo reproductions of the Mexican furnishings in the house including water jars jewelry boxes and woven garments. American-born expatriate artist and designer William Spratling created drawings for the new house and illustrated the text. Elizabeth Morrow was an American poet in the early 20th century who became the first female head of Smith College. William Chambers Morrow 1854-1923 Was An American Writer Now Noted Mainly For His Short Stories Of Horror And Suspense. He Is Probably Best Known For The Much-Anthologised Story "His Unconquerable Enemy" 1889 About The Implacable Revenge Of A Servant Whose Limbs Have Been Amputated On The Orders Of A Cruel Rajah. Morrow Moved West To California In 1879 And Began Selling Stories To The Argonaut Where Ambrose Bierce Was Just Terminating A Two-Year Period Of Employment. Bierce Was An Enthusiast Of Morrow's Stories In One Of His Squibs A Nervous Reader Declares "I Have One Of Will Morrow's Tales In My Pocket But I Don't Dare To Go Where There Is Light Enough To Read It" And In 1887 Probably Recommended William Randolph Hearst To Approach Morrow For Material For The San Francisco Examiner. Several Of Morrow's Most Notable Tales Appeared In This Newspaper. His First Novel Blood-Money 1882 About The Mussel Slough Tragedy Was An Indictment Of The Conduct Of California Railroad Companies Which Were Forcing Settlers Off Their Land. It Gained Little Attention And In Fact Morrow Took A Position In The Public Relations Department Of The Southern Pacific Railroad . His Stories Were Collected In The Ape The Idiot And Other People In 1897 But He Published Few Stories Thereafter. By 1899 Morrow Had Begun A School For Writers And In 1901 He Produced A Pamphlet The Art Of Writing For Publication. Bierce Commented That: "It Is A Pity Morrow Teaches Others To Write Badly Instead Of Himself Writing Well. But I Fancy We Have No Grievance Therein Or If We Have It Is Against The Pig Public Not Against Morrow. He Would Write Books Doubtless If He Could Afford To As I Would Do. Morrow Published Two Romantic Adventure Novels A Man; His Mark 1900 And Lentala Of The South Seas 1908 An Apparently Journalistic Work Called Bohemian Paris Of Today From "Notes By Edouard Cucuel" And A Short Travel Booklet Roads Around Paso Robles 1904.
