The binding shows minimal wear and at first one might wonder if it were a reprint but it is not. Very well preserved. The wrappers are toned and the text shows toning within the print as well as some light foxing in the margins. A letter and four numbers are written in old 19th century iron gall ink in the gutter at Page 1. Several pages of Raleigh North Carolina advertisements at the rear including on the inside and outside of the rear cover. One ad reads "Negro Auction and Commission House by W. F. Askew & Co. Fayetteville Street Raleigh N.C. / Safe and Comfortable Quarters and chargest for Board &c. as moderate as teh times will permit. ~ They have an experience of twenty years in the Trade and flatter themselves that they thoroughly understand the business. / W. F. Askew & Co. / January 1st 1865." The ad is all the more interesting since the Emancipation Proclamation freed all slaves as of Jan. 1st 1863. William D. Herrington was a member of the Third North Carolina Cavalry from Pitt County NC. While serving in the Confederate Army Herrington published several stories and novellas in journals and William B. Smith published Herrington's "The Captain's Bride" in Raleigh in 1864. William S. Powell described Herrington's stories as ".well-written thoroughly loyal in sentiment to the Confederate cause and tell of overcoming great odds. The settings are clearly eastern North Carolina and undoubtedly reflect the author's military experience there." Housed loosely in a plastic sleeve with a board backing. Thornton 6053 <br/> <br/> Wm. Jeanne-Fran�oise Julie Ad�la�de R�camier 1777-1849 known as Juliette was a French society leader whose salon drew Parisians from the leading literary and political circles of the early 19th century. Beautiful accomplished and with a love of literature Juliette was shy and modest by nature. From the earliest days of the French Consulate to almost the end of the July Monarchy her salon in Paris was one of the chief resorts of literary and political society that followed what was fashionable. The habitu�s of her house included many former royalists with others such as General Bernadotte and General Moreau more or less disaffected to the government. This circumstance together with her refusal to act as lady-in-waiting to Empress consort Jos�phine de Beauharnais and her friendship for Germaine de Sta�l brought her under suspicion. In 1800 Jacques-Louis David began his portrait of her but left it unfinished on learning Fran�ois G�rard had been commissioned to paint a portrait before he had. Gerard's was completed in 1802. It was through Mme de Sta�l that Mme R�camier became acquainted with Benjamin Constant whose political equivocations during the last days of the Empire and the first of the Restoration have been attributed to her persuasions. Mme R�camier was eventually exiled from Paris by the orders of Napoleon I. After a short stay at her native Lyon she proceeded to Rome and finally to Naples. There Mme de R�camier was on exceedingly good terms with Joachim Murat and his wife Caroline Bonaparte who were then intriguing with the Bourbons. She persuaded Constant to plead the claims of Murat in a memorandum addressed to the Congress of Vienna and also induced him to take up a decided attitude in opposition to Napoleon during the Hundred Days. . New York: The Modern Library 1967. Hersey a mid-20th century writer and Pulitzer Prize winner wrote a number of notable and award-winning novels including "Of Men and War" "The Wall" and "A Bell for Adano" but for world-wide impact none was close to his non-fiction reporting in "Hiroshima" which detailed his interviews with survivors of the first act of nuclear warfare in August 1945. This copy of The Modern Library edition is a first edition thus later printing. Originally published on August 31 1946 in The New Yorker which dedicated an entire issue to the story with the Knopf hardcover first edition issued less than two months later. This copy is from the Modern Library's Spring 1967 printing based on the Modern Library Giants list at the back of the book the Style 13 Fujita binding on the covers and endpapers design and also the Style L series dustjacket. About 4 7/8 x 7 1/4 inches 120 pages including two-page Giants list. Bound in dark-blue cloth-covered boards with silver lettering on spine. The front panle of the dustjacket shows a graphic design of title in blue lettering author in gold separated and bounded by four black bars against a white background. The boards and text show only a touch of surface and edge wear. No bumped corners no creasing or scratching. The text edges show light soiling o/w clean complete and unmarked binding squiare and tight. The price-clipped dustjacket's front panel shows a 3/4 inch closed tear on top edge near spine with two smaller tears along same edge which have been tape-repaired on verso. Back panel has pair of half-inch closed tears on lower edge. Both panels and spine show some light age-toning and light soiling. The price-clipped front panel fold also has small price sticker next to the clipped area. The graphics on the dj are complete and undamaged by the light surface wear and wear at the edges and spine ends. Published just a little more than a year after the bomb exploded the story presented in simple direct journalistic language a Japanese people considerably different from the fanatical militaristic version described in the American and European media up to then. .
