She Reports That Her Husband The Painter William Wendt Is "Steadily Recovering" Etc. Julia Bracken Wendt 1870-1942 Was A Notable American Sculptor. She Ran Away From Home At Thirteen. By Sixteen She Was Working As A Domestic Servant For A Woman Who Recognized Her Talent And Drive And Paid To Enroll Her In The Art Institute Of Chicago. There She Studied With Lorado Taft And By 1887 She Had Advanced To Become His Studio And Teaching Assistant. In 1893 During The Columbian Exposition She Was One Of Several Women Sculptors Nicknamed The White Rabbits Who Helped Produce Some Of The Architectural Sculpture That Graced The Exposition Buildings. Aside From That She Was Awarded A Commission To Produce Illinois Welcoming The Nations For The Fair. The Work Was Later Cast In Bronze And Unveiled At The Illinois State Capitol. After Successfully Pursuing Her Career For A Number Of Years In 1906 She Married Painter William Wendt And Moved To Los Angeles California Where She Continued Her Success Including Notable Sculpture At The San Diego Exposition And In Los Angeles. In California She Taught At The Otis Art Institute. Wendt Was A Member Of The National Sculpture Society And Exhibited And Was Featured In Both The 1923 And 1929 Exhibitions And The Resulting Catalogs. <br/> <br/> Unpublished unknown

Liu Wenxi is famous in China for his portraits of Mao born in 1933 he was the greatest representative of socialist realism. Most of the portraits are accompanied by a caption and the artist's red seal some captions are very brief: the god of the people others explain the political or historical situation in which Mao finds himself. The title label is handwritten and one can easily imagine that this type of collection was printed for propaganda purposes to glorify President Mao. The album contains no publisher's or printer's name. Accordion album on rigid cardboard composed of 20 panels. Each printed portrait appears to be an offset process has been mounted. The upper and lower covers have been covered with turquoise blue silk fabric with leaf and flower motifs. The composition of the whole is handcrafted. The title label appears to be handwritten. This type of collection was certainly produced by the painter's workshop. Trace of dampstain at edges and on the third portrait in lower margin not touching the drawing. Also a politician but above all a teacher Liu Wenxi was very close to power and he began painting Mao very early as soon as the communists took refuge in the northern Shaanxi region after the famous Long March. Barely a student he would say: ""President Mao is truly extraordinary I am determined to paint this great man all my life to transmit his image to future generations."" During the Cultural Revolution Liu Wenxi was part of the Qin WenMei a group of local artists who worked on specific projects. Today the hundred yuan note is still illustrated with one of his portraits. « Dans le monde d'aujourd'hui toute culture toute littérature et tout art appartiennent à une classe déterminée et relèvent d'une ligne politique définie. 1955 FASCINATING ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A PAIR OF GERMAN TEENAGERS: ONE SUFFERING PRE BERLIN WALL OPPRESSION IN THE SOVIET SECTOR AND HIS LUCKIER FRIEND IN THE AMERICAN SECTOR WHO WERE GIVEN A SUMMER CAMP EXPERIENCE IN ENGLAND
Germany - England. Good. 1955. On offer is a terrific significant journal written by two German high school students who visited an English camp during the bleak years following WWII. The journal measures 9 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches. It is composed of 88 pages fastened together with a leatherette lace between cardboard covers. The cover has a very lovely ink sketch of London Bridge. It is in very good condition as are all 88 pages. The layout is 'landscape' and each page is typed. The spelling grammar and language construction are excellent. In 1955 Werner Avenhaus and his friend Helmut Matthias are high school students at Ulrich-von-Hutten-Highschool in Berlin Lichtenrade. Avenhaus lives in the Soviet Sector but is able to cross into the American Sector to go to school as the Berlin Wall was still six years in the future. In August 1955 Avenhaus and his friend Helmut are selected to take part in an international summer camp experience in Britain. Life was not easy: "I myself live in the Soviet Zone and I have to pass controls at the frontier every day when I go to school. My father has fallen during the last war and so my mother has to earn our living. So you can imagine that there was not much hope for me to see a foreign country. You can imagine my joy when Helmut Matthias a fellow pupil of mine and myself were chosen for a 15 visit to England. Almost immediately I tried the passports and visas. This was very difficult for me for I had to conceal my plan from the authorities in Eastern Germany which would never have permitted me to visit a country of the western hemisphere." He travelled by himself and met his teacher a few days later in Hannover. Matthias living in the American Zone had no such problems. What follows are pages of excellent description of their journey and experiences. Their initial destination was London where they stayed overnight. The next day was given over to sightseeing: "The first important building we saw was Westminster Abbey the huge cathedral where all the kings and queens of England were crowned since 1066 . A black marble in the floor of the nave marked the last resting place of the Unknown Warrior . Behind the cathedral we saw the Houses of Parliament . And the famous bell called Big Ben . After a while we reached the next interesting building: Buckingham Palace is the London residence of the Queen." Later that day they meet several students from Italy and Australia. They all board buses and drive north to the small town of Cuffley where they move into a wooded fully-equipped campground for two weeks. With Matthias taking over some of the note-taking they describe the camp and those they met there: ". It was an international Course for Senior Pupils from Western European Schools and Englicsh Grammar Schools on Literature and the Arts in Western Europe. It was the first time that senior pupils from schools in Austria France Germany Italy and Spain had joined their contemporaries in England to study each other's language literature and arts." They describe their own group their tent quarters and how their days unfolded. Mornings were given over to lectures and studies in a foreign language discussion and seminars on literature and art followed by afternoons for sports and bus tours of the surrounding area. The journal is simply chock full of details. There was a lot of activity packed into those 15 days. The journal has a number of black-and-white photographs pasted into various pages. Also of interest are two letters. An undated one written by Wolfgang Sutor and addressed simply to 'Dear Friends' expresses thanks for a pair of shoes and a winter coat: ". I was very glad indeed to get a very good winter-coat. I was extremely delighted about it because I did not possess any and it is winter now." The second letter is written by a girl named Waltraud Ernst. Dated January 10 1953 it too is addressed simply to 'Dear Friends.' In it she expresses thanks for a package of red wool she received so her mother could knit her a sweater. She describes her life in the letter noting that she is 20 attends school and works part-time as a cashier. She observes: ". In Germany everybody is glad to have work. It's very difficult to get a place for the young people who have finished school." She tells how her father 65 yrs old a concert musician before the war lost his leg in the fighting. Her mother is 58 and very ill. She makes a very poignant comment . You can see the traces of the last war in her face. She expresses the hope that someday she can become a teacher. At the end of the journal Werner and Helmut express their gratitude for the opportunity to take part in the camp: ". We had also enormous profit by learning other nations' idea wishes and customs to see what it means to help each other on the human basis and to see that we are all part of a great human family that has one foundation . We are sure that this is the best way to make friends in the world." It is signed by both boys. We learned in a 2021 email from Avenhaus that he began studying at the Free University in West Berlin in 1956. He had a room in West Berlin but returned home on weekends to help out in his familys large fruit and vegetable garden. Avenhause explained that two weeks before the Berlin Wall was erected a neighbour warned him that something would happen to individuals who travelled into West Berlin. His family took immediate action: his 80-year-old grandmother and 46-year-old mother went by train to West Berlin without any belongings and Avenhauss 20-year-old sister Erika followed shortly after on a different train. They all met in Werners room in West Berlin and then were flown to Hannover and travelled to Dortmund where they had family. Avenhaus became a high school teacher in the town of Bochum teaching English French and Latin. He married his wife Eva in 1963 and had two children Thomas and Sabine. He Was A Training And Supervising Analyst And Also Served As A Professor Of Psychiatry At The University Of Southern California School Of Medicine And University Of California Los Angeles Where He Taught Courses On Psychoanalytic Theory And Technique. Grotjahn Was Known For His Work On Ego Psychology Which Emphasizes The Importance Of The Ego In Psychological Functioning. He Also Made Significant Contributions To The Understanding Of Narcissism A Personality Trait Characterized By A Grandiose Sense Of Self-Importance And A Lack Of Empathy For Others. Grotjahn Was A Prolific Writer And Lecturer And Authored Numerous Articles And Book Chapters On Psychoanalytic Theory And Technique As Well As A Number Of Books. Grotjahn Was Widely Respected In The Psychoanalytic Community For His Contributions To The Field. 1912 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT STUDENT STRIKE BREAKER AND 'SCAB' WORKING FOR THE ELEVATED STREET RAILROAD DURING A BITTER LABOR STRIKE
BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS. Good. 1912. On offer is a small original diary of a young man in the early years of the 20th Century. Measuring 4.75 inches by 3 inches it contains 365 pages. It is approximately 33% complete. The cover binding and pages are all in good condition. The handwriting is legible. EDITOR'S NOTE: While there is nothing in this diary to identify the author the item came from an archive related to Wesley Abell who graduated from the University of Vermont was inducted into their Football Hall of Fame and after graduating built a career in the municipal service of Burlington VT eventually becoming City Clerk. In 1912 he is a young man living with relatives and working in Boston MA in 1912. He has secured work as a driver/conductor for the Boston Elevated Street Railway. This is not his long term future goal for in September of 1912 he leaves home to attend the University of Vermont. The entries are fairly straightforward: "Jan 1 '12 finds me working for the Boston Elevated Street Railroad Co. I am staying with Uncle .wn in morning and done my a/ 521 .45 530 .30 Total .75 Excused until 4 o'clock b/ done a 531 .45 & 525 .30 Total .75 c met cars from 6 o'c til 7 o'c Total for day $1.80" Jan 1 1912; "For my A.M. this morn I had 2 534 .60. Was then excused until 4 o'c when I went and done a half for 4 th consisting of 504 and 520 Pay for the day - $1.75" Feb 24 1912; "Today I had a swing beginning at 8:27. Done four trips and then layed off til 6:07. Earl Sunderl was over to see me. Total $2.30 Paid." Mar 3 1913; "After April 5th there are no entries until June. On June 7th it apears that he is running a union picket line - with expected consequences! This morn I went down to run a trip at 5 o'c. On starting out on trip I was met by a bunch of strikers who threw eggs at me. Worked all day mid yells of scab and all sorts of other names. The strikers tried their best to get me to leave my car but I stuck it out". June 7 1912; This entry is significant because it refers to the Boston Elevated Street Railway strike of 1912. This was a serious labour dispute over the organizing of a union there and the demand for better wages. The strike began on June 7th and soon spiraled into violence. Court crack downs were draconian and the strike seemed poised to spread to other cities. The major turning point in the strike however came as a result of charges filed with the State Board of Conciliation and Arbitration. The Board released a report which upheld the Union's charges and placed the blame for the strike on the Management. The Board found that the Management had discharged employees solely for their Union activities had brought in strike breakers such as our author and convicted felons who were employed as strong-arm men and had coerced employees against joining the Union. After the Board's report The Governor and the Mayor of Boston became actively involved in settling the strike. The Mayor of Boston in 1912 was John F. Fitzgerald affectionately referred to as "Honey Fitz". Fitzgerald was the maternal grandfather of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Edward M. Kennedy and great grandfather of Congressman Joe Kennedy. In September he is off to university: "This morn I packed my trunks and papa carried me to St. A to take train for college. Earle A and F Stevens went down with me. Met lots of nice fellows in B and spent time with Hayden and Wesley Sturgis at Converse Hall". Sept 24. This diary offers an interesting look into one of the urban transport companies from the point of view of an ordinary worker. For a social historian it provides a flavour and a sense of what work was like in industrialized Boston at the turn of the last century. TRENTON NEW JERSEY. Good. 1891. On offer is an interesting original 1890s manuscript notebook handwritten by Wesley Creveling who was the Mayor of Trenton New Jersey in 1875 to 1877. The 5½" x 2½" book has about 70 pages of handwritten notes on architecture hotels in various cities facts banking remedies genealogy personal notes etc. The book is somewhat worn but overall G. BIO NOTES: one on line source: Birth: Oct. 7 1845 Broadway Warren County New Jersey USA Death: Apr. 16 1920 Philadelphia Philadelphia County Pennsylvania USA Wesley Creveling married Clara Bradway b.1853 in Clarksboro NJ.-d.July 10 1930 in Philadelphia PA. on April 23 1884 at her home in Woodbury NJ. The ceremony was officiated by Rev. Dr. Samuel M. Studdiford. Clara Bradway Creveling was the daughter of Hon. John H. and Mary Elizabeth Tonkin Clark Bradway. Clara Bradway Creveling was a Daughter of the American Revolution. She was a descendant of Thomas Clark 1737-1809. Thomas Clark was on the Committee of Safety and a Deputy to the Provisional Continental Congress. Thomas Clark was born and died in Gloucester NJ. Wesley Creveling was a prominent Democrat and served as the Mayor of Trenton NJ. from 1875-1877. He was an attorney and had an office at 45 East State St. in Trenton. He led the Centennial Parade in Trenton on July 4 1876. During his term in office the first post office in Trenton was built. He was a member of the 3rd. Presbyterian Church of Trenton. After his retirement he wintered in Florida and spent the summers in the mountains of New York. The Wesley Creveling Family resided at 48 Clinton Avenue in Trenton Mercer County NJ. They had one child. Mary Bradway Creveling their daughter was borrn on February 24 1885 in Trenton NJ. She died on September 7 1885 in Trenton NJ. Her funeral was conducted from her parents Clinton Avenue home. Mary Bradway Creveling was originally interred in the Mercer Cemetery with her grandparents. She was later reinterred in the Riverview Cemtery in the Wesley Creveling Family Plot. Mary Bradway Creveling is Find-A-Grave Memorial Number 39190093. Mary Bradway Creveling's grandparents were also reinterred in the Wesley Creveling Burial Plot Number 571. Wesley Creveling's last address was 911 South 47th. St. in Philadelphia PA. Short title in ink on the back. ad 2: woodcut printer's mark on title depicting Athena and her owl under an olive tree the motto is: 'Ne extra oleas' to be understood as 'Stay within the bounds of wisdom' Condition: Vellum somewhat soiled. Front hinge cracked but still hanging on one chord. Front pastedown detached. Upper margin of 1/3 slightly waterstained. Ad 2: 8 gatherings i.e 64 pages of the 'Probabilium liber' have browned paper Note: Ad 1: The Dutch philologist of Westphalian descent Peter Wesseling or Petrus Wesselingius 1692-1764 published in 1758 the first monograph of importance on the Greek historian Herodotus. He studied in Leiden under Gronovius but after his switch to the university of Franeker in 1714 he came under the influence of Lambertus Bos 1670-1717 and more important Tiberius Hemsterhuis 1685-1766 and developed himself into a many-sided allround and critical philologist. He is said to be one of the 'Masterpieces' of Hemsterhuis the leading Greek scholar in the Low Countries. Wesseling was not a genius. Bernays writes about him: 'Seine Art ist ganz dauerhaft in einzeln Partien doch ohne grosse Geistesblitze. Ihn zeichnet Sorgfalt Klarheit und grosser Fleiss aus'. Wesseling was professor of Greek and History at the University of Utrecht since 1735. There he produced 3 masterpieces that made his name. First he published in 1746 a still indispensable edition of Diodorus. Thereafter in 1758 the 'Dissertatio Herodotea' was published. He had his Herodotus-edition ready in 1756 before the 'dissertatio' but owing to difficulties with the publisher Luchtmans Wesseling had to wait until 1763 before his third masterpiece was published. Ad 2: Wesseling's original interest before studying classical philology was theology. His 'Probabilium liber' is a product of this interest. The work is partly an attack on the socian exegesis of Johannes 1 verse 1. See wikipedia s.v. Socianism. It is further filled with philological corrections and discussions on profane and ecclesiastical authors.
