The Tourist's Pocket Map of the State of Illinois Exhibiting Its Internal Improvements: Roads Distances & c.
Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell 1834. 12" X 15". Hand colored map. Very good. Green colored column along left margin titled "Population of the State of Illinois According to the Census of 1830" lists each county's population totaling 157 575 and a breakdown of white males and females colored males and females "Total Free Colored 1653" slaves male and female "Total Slaves 746". Multi-colored column along right margin titled "Steam Boat Routes" with subcategories "St. Louis to Galena" "Galena to Prairie du Chien" "Shawneetown to New Orleans" "Shawneetown to St. Louis" "Shawneetown to Lafayette" and "St. Louis to Peoria." Inset at lower left titled "Map of the Lead Mine Region East of the Mississippi River" and details the northwest corner of Illinois with its focus on Galena. This map has been nicely framed in a contemporary 1" gilt and red frame overall dimensions 14" X 17". Also present housed in mylar sleeve on frame's verso is the original 32mo red leather case with gilt title and edging. Good plus. A bit edgeworn and slightly scuffed with hinge starting -- still fully legible and quite presentable. Printed "Public Lands" statement affixed to front pastedown.
