While unable to translate research suggests this is a biography of Anders Carl Rutstrom who was a renowned professor of Theology priest author and activist. His work promoting Herrnhutismen also known as the Moravian Church saw Rutstrom banished from the Swedish realm. One online source provides: "This is a comprehensive story about the priest Anders Carl Rutstr�m who was a member of the Hat Party. He became the subject of so many unfair and unreasonable persecutions that it reminds you of an inquisition. This work is an account of this remarkable campaign against Rutstr�m a campaign that did not end until after his death. Rutstr�m�s Defense is also included. Rutstr�m was forced penniless in exile in Germany and Denmark where he was well received. When Hat Party was re-elected in 1769 he was recalled to Sweden but was arrested in 1772 and died in prison just when he received word of the King." The boards are slightly rubbed and bowed but interiors are very good. 1861-1863 Archive of Five Civil War-Era Manuscript Letters Relating to the Robust US Banking System Army Units Debts Corporate Elections
United States: Civil War America Bank of America 115th Ohio Infantry. Very Good. 1861-1863. Non-Book. On offer is a unique collection of five letters that detail several financial transactions during the American Civil War. The first letter details a financial transaction between one J. C. Anderson and a Mr. D. McLaren. McLaren is identified further on in the note as "Brigadier of the 115th Ohio Volunteers". The 115th Ohio Infantry was organized Massillon Ohio and mustered in September 18 1862 for three years service under the command of Colonel Jackson A. Lucy. After being raised they were moved to Cincinnati Ohio. They were assigned to duty by detachments as provost guard and guarding forts arsenals store houses and magazines at Camp Chase Camp Dennison Maysville Covington and Newport Kentucky and Cincinnati Ohio until October 1863. They were then ordered to Chattanooga TN then to Murfreesboro TN. They were stationed at Murfreesboro and along line of the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad in block houses and at bridges until June 1865. The Regiment was specially selected for this arduous duty because of the great number of skilled mechanics and artisans in its ranks. They were involved in actions at Cripple Creek Woodbury Pike the siege of Murfreesboro "The Cedars" and Lavergne. The Regiment was mustered out of service June 23 1865 at Murfreesboro TN. The letter drafted in Carlisle PA on May 6 1861 is addressed to a D. McLaren. In the salutation he is referred to as Superintendent but further down the letter he is addressed as Brigadier D. McLaren of the 115th Ohio Volunteers. Our research has not turned up anyone of that name who served in that rank in the 115th Ohio Volunteers. The letter requests the transfer of $300.00. The second letter is addressed to a Mr. F. H. Short and was drafted June 5th 1862. It was written by a Mr. S. R. Drury. The letter concerns an apparent debt that is owed to Drury and steps he wishes to take to collect on it. It includes this interesting line: "As I never allow an Irishman to get ahead of me in pmts I wish you to instruct whoever pays him to ." . The third letter is also addressed to the same F. H. Short. It is dated in New York on April 28th 1863. The writer is one E. R Bell. The letter concerns the attempt to collect proxies for a corporate election. In the letter reference is made to a 'President L'Hommedua'The fourth letter again addressed to F. H Short on letterhead of the Bank of America. It was written by Robert Jaffray Transfer Clerk at the Bank. The letter is dated Nov 20 1863. In it Jaffray advises Short that his account has been charged $20 for Government Stamps. He also states that the Certificate Book is nearly depleted. This refers to the share certificates that a company would issue to new shareholders. It appears that Short is using the Bank of America as his company's Transfer Agent. Our research has identified Robert Jaffray. Jaffray was born in Manhattan in 1824. He worked for the Bank of America in New York City. He passed away in 1902 at the age of 77. The fifth letter was written by S. R. Drury on Oct 31st 1863. Directed to the addressee whose name cannot be read it advises of a meeting date and time and requests some details of attendees. For a historian these letters hint at the range of banking business that was being carried out in the mid 19th century America. From covering payments to army units fighting in the Civil War to general corporate business one can see the robust American banking system in play. The Bank of America can trace its roots back to 1784 and today is the second largest banking conglomerate in the United States. This is a fine collection of primary-source banking instruments from a turbulent and fascinating time in America's history. The letters are in excellent condition. The handwriting is in a copperplate font which offers challenges to the modern reader. LYNCHBURG VIRGINIA VA THOMASVILLE NORTH CAROLINA. Good. 1936. On offer is a super fascinating manuscript relic of early Harley-Davidson motorcycle history being a 1936 original diary handwritten by the 22 year old J. Carson Little as evidenced by his personal address label "J. Carson Little "The Motorcycle Man" 3124 Campbell Av. Lynchburg VA 24501." There's another address inside that shows him living at Thomasville North Carolina. He was known as "The Motorcycle Man" because of his renown as a Harley Davidson dealer which he did for over 47 years. Only 22 years old at the writing the entire diary reflects whole life being centered around Harley-Davidson motorcycles. One online site dedicated to him provides: "J. Carson Little was the Harley dealer in Lynchburg Virginia for many many years�.his incredible collection of Harley literature he had saved throughout the years. His two car garage has a fully finished upstairs room that was a Harley Museum. We learn that Mr Little used to hand out flyers regarding a noted trip to the Rose Bowl. "Hello. The following is a brief description of why I am in your town. "In 1938 Carson and a buddy rode Carson's brand new 1938 Harley from Thomasville North Carolina to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena California and home again. He sold the bike in 1948 but started looking for it in 1958. It had passed through 13 owners but on the 20th anniversary of his 1938 trip he found it again. Carson and his son rode back to the Rose Bowl in 1963 the 25th anniversary of his original trip. Of course he rode the same motorcycle as he had done in 1938. He then decided to keep going back every five years "just to keep in practice". 1968 - 30th anniversary. 1973 - 35th. 1978 - 40th. 1983 - 45th and once more in 1988 for the 50th Anniversary. Same man - same motorcycle - same trip J. Carson Little "The Motorcycle Man""Dave Hennessey. The diary is full. Here are some snippets: 1936 "I fixed up my 1925 Harley Davidson. 1948 FASCINATING ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LOG BOOK AND JOURNAL DETAILING THE DAY TO DAY ACTIVITIES OF A MAJOR PITTSBURGH PENNSYLVANIA STEEL MAKING PLANT
PITTSBURGH PENNSYLVANIA. Good. 1948. On offer is a very interesting detailed logbook of the day-to-day tasks of a steelworker in Pittsburgh PA. The hardbound volume measures 8 3/4 inches by 5 1/2 inches. It contains about 288 pages and is 100% complete. The covers binding and pages are in good condition. It covers the time period from Nov 1948 to Feb 1950. However there are large gaps in the daily recordings. The flyleaf is inscribed with the name J. Cleason Baer but informal research has been unable to find any additional information. Many entries are signed by different individuals and handwriting varies so this appears in fact have been a logbook for a station rather than a person. The logbook details processes undertaken each day using language and terms specific to steel mill operations: "Started on time. #10 Delayed 25 minutes repairing catchers table #3 delayed 30 minutes. Changing plates on Crown wheels. #4 Delayed 20 mins. Changing plates on crown wheels. #5 marked by Bliss small tit on Bar marked on matching Pass" Nov 15th 1948. Started on time. Changed #8 & MR #10 at 6:27. #1-6 delayed 10 min #10 delayed 40 min #8 delayed 1 hour 45 min Changed mill and rigging #1 delayed 20 min Elect trouble on Peter conveyor" Jan 13th 1949. "Started on time. Changed all 3 rolls #10 at 12:50 #1-8 delayed 10 min #10 delayed 1 hour changing mill #10 delayed 20 min with tilt #10 delayed 15 min with front bumper #1 delayed 40 min Conveyor broke on #1 piler" May 4th 1949.
