Thomas Jefferson Autograph Letter Signed Regarding His Library.
One page autograph letter signed by Thomas Jefferson regarding duties for a shipment of books for his second library at Monticello. Address to David Gelston esq who was the Collector of the Port of New York appointed by Jefferson in 1801. The letter reads "On my return home after some absence I found here your favors of Sept. 2 & 15. stating the amount of freight & duties on my books . Having no medium of remittance but in the bills of our banks I enclose 8.D presuming they are negotiable with you and that the fractional surplus may cover their discount at market. I salute you with continual friendship & respect. Th. Jefferson." The letter measures 9.75 inches by 7.75 inches. Matted and framed with a portrait. Thomas Jefferson was an American Founding Father who was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and later served as the third President of the United States from 1801 to 1809. Prior to his presidency he was elected the second Vice President of the United States serving under John Adams from 1797 to 1801. A proponent of democracy republicanism and individual rights motivating American colonists to break from Great Britain and form a new nation he produced formative documents and decisions at both the state and national level. Small octavo bound in full contemporary sheep with red morocco spine label lettered in gilt gilt tooling to the spine. In very good condition. Early ownership signature. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional example. As Vice President of the United States Jefferson served as the Senate's presiding officer from 1797 to 1801. Throughout these four years Jefferson worked on various texts and in early 1800 started to assemble them into a single manuscript for the Senate's use. In December 1800 he delivered his manuscript to printer Samuel Harrison Smith who delivered the final product to Jefferson on 27 February 1801. The Manual is arranged in fifty-three categories from 1 The Importance of Adhering to Rules to 53 Impeachment. Each section includes the appropriate rules and practices of the British Parliament along with the applicable texts from the U.S. Constitution and the thirty-two Senate rules that existed in 1801. In recent years Jefferson's Manual has been cited to support the idea that state legislatures can initiate congressional impeachment proceedings. While precedent for an impeachment so initiated does exist it still requires a direct proposition to impeach be made by a Member of the House who may incorporate the communication of the legislature in his or her remarks or any impeachment resolution submitted to the House. Second Congress of the United States: At the First Session begun and held at the City of Philadelphia in the State of Pennsylvania on Monday the twenty-fourth of October one thousand seven hundred and ninety-one. An Act to extend the Time limited for settling the Accounts of the United States with the Individual States.
Philadelphia: Childs & Swaine 1792. Scarce printing of an early United States law providing for the funding of the national debt signed by Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State. Folio one page. The document which also carries the printed signatures of President George Washington Vice President John Adams and House Speaker Jonathan Trumbull was approved January 23 1792. Individual acts and bills of the first Congresses were routinely printed for public consumption. A provision was made however to print a few copies of each act for dissemination to the states and to have each copy signed by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. One of the main priorities of the federal government in the early national period was to pay down the debt of the United States. The national debt was incurred during the Revolution and augmented in 1790 when the Congress passed the Assumption Act in accordance with a plan devised by Alexander Hamilton. Because contacting the numerous and geographically dispersed holders of the debt proved more difficult than expected it became necessary to extend the time allowed by law for making the relevant financial arrangements. The present act accomplished this and made a special extension of five months for Vermont which gave the new state time to calculate the amount of debt. Despite Jefferson's vehement opposition to Hamilton's plan when it was formulated his position as Secretary of State necessitated his signature on the presentation copies of the acts that effected it. In fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco folding case. Scarce with only one other example signed by Jefferson located. Jefferson wrote this legal brief regarding a dispute with Edward Livingston over a tract of land on the Mississippi known as the Batture which Jefferson had claimed for the federal government while President. Livingston had sued Jefferson for $100000 but the case was dismissed. Concerned that the public considered the court's dismissal to be based on a technicality. Sabin 35912. Depicts Henry Ford speaking into Thomas Edison's right ear. Francis Jehl 1860-1941 began working for Edison in 1879 at Menlo Park. After working for Edison in Europe for many years Jehl eventually assisted Henry Ford in recreating the Menlo Park laboratory in Ford's Greenfield Villege museum in Michigan which opened in 1933. This drawing was probably made at that time as Edison and Ford commemorated Edison's groundbreaking work at the original Menlo Park laboratory. In Very Good Condition: small stain; browning along edges particularly at upper corners; small chip out of upper right-hand corner; 2-cm. tear from upper edge not touching image; one vertical crease along right-hand edge; lightly creased near edges. <br/><br/> unknown

An extensive archive of manuscript letters postcards notes etc from A. K. Hamilton Jenkin; with lengthy and detailed typescript replies etc from Justin Brooke relating to the Cornish Mining industry in relation to the " Mines and Miners of Cornwall " series. The archive consists of approximately 20 postcards and 49 manuscript letters mainly of two pages in the hand of A.K.H.J for instance " I am now revising my St. Erth St. Hilary Breage "Part". I wonder if you have any M. J. Mining Journal extracts on Ennys Wheal Virgin. I have notes from a M.S. report of circa 1847 but little or nothing from the M. J." From Justin Brooke to A.K.H.J there is a large batch of typescript sheets of " minor amendments " to " Mines and Miners " Index of Mines Map reference of Mines etc. Also 81 typescript copies of letters from J. B. to A.K.H.J with copious amounts of information on Cornish mines and the mining industry suggestions and information for the " Mines and Miners " series. For instance " the enlarged sett of Calstock Consols had an eastern boundary somewhere about the Kelly Railway line since Spargo 1865 p.138 notes that a fine lode of gossan 23' wide had been cut by the company about 60 fms. west of the engine shaft which rather suggests that the old Trelawny Consols sett or the western part of it was included in Calstock Consols. The last named continued to work until about 1866 . " All contained within an elegant custom made drop sided box. A.K.H.M published the highly respected series of 16 volumes of the " Mines and Miners of Cornwall" between the years 1961-70 this detailed correspondence covers this period. Justin Brooke who was proof reading the series suggesting alterations and amendments as well as contributing large quantities of original information much of which only he had access to through his own large collection of books manuscripts and maps relating to the Cornish mining industry. Justin Brook's popular work " Stannary Tales the Shady Side of Mining " published in 1980 was dedicated " To A. K. Hamilton Jenkin who guided my steps ". Cloth. Fine. Manuscript. Hardcover

One of his purchases described here was the $10 million Eberstadt Western Americana collection.
