The second text is a rare Siena imprint on the life of San Galgan or Galgano 1148-1181 born at Chiusdino near Siena in Tuscany. Printed in italics. 1577 edition with a large title vignette. 2 copies in Italian catalogues one at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and one at the British Library. Date of 3 December 1576 in the colophon. Contemporary limp vellum binding with overlapping flaps. Smooth spine with title in black ink calligraphy running lengthwise. Traces of ties one still present. Various stains on the vellum spine darkened. Trimmed short throughout sometimes affecting a few letters in the upper margin. Pp. 54 and 55 passage crossed out in black ink over 8 lines. Pale yellow dampstaining in the lower portion throughout the leaves then in the middle and upper portions on the last 100 leaves sometimes barely visible sometimes more pronounced. Small wormholes on several leaves in the inner margin in the middle. Some signatures protruding. Boards stamped with arms and ciphers in the corners and triple fillet frame. Red edges. Paper browned. Skilful and fine restorations to headcaps joints and corners. Gilding faded in places. Good copy. Major figure of the 17th century Charles de Sainte-Maure was made Duke of Montausier and Peer of France in 1664 and received the appointment as tutor to the Dauphin in 1668. His marriage to the great précieuse of the time she who was called the incomparable Julie Julie d'Angennes was one of the great affairs of his life. It was for her that he composed La guirlande de Julie a collection of 62 madrigals composed by the most illustrious poets of the time including himself. The Duke of Montausier was finally the model for Molière's Misanthrope which is still today one of his claims to fame. As for the Duchess she was portrayed by Madeleine de Scudery in her novel: Artamène ou le Grand Cyrus. They both constitute eminent symbols of the century of Louis XIV. Jérôme Cardan or Girolamo Cardana is one of the great Italian humanists of the Renaissance. Monogrammed bookplate mounted on the verso of the first endpaper. This copy is enriched with four hors-texte plates by Louis Boulanger and Alfred Johannot. Signed autograph inscription by Victor Hugo on the half-title: « À Monsieur Charles Mévil son bien cordialement dévoué Victor Hugo. » Valuable and intriguing presentation inscription to the administrator and principal shareholder of the highly influential Revue de Paris publisher of Balzac whom the young Hugo was likely hoping to win over. It was only in 1834 two years after the success of Notre-Dame de Paris that Hugo would publish a text in the Revue Claude Gueux alongside his prolific rival’s Le Père Goriot. Presentation copies of this title by Victor Hugo are exceedingly rare. In his Chronologie des livres imprimés de Victor Hugo published in 2013 Éric Bertin records only nine such inscriptions in this edition: to Sainte-Beuve Taylor Paul Lacroix Charles Mévil this copy Charles Nodier Loève-Veimars Armand Bertin H. Romand and the faithful Paul Meurice. The work also notes that this copy appeared in the Latour sale 1885 and more significantly the Noilly sale 1886.
