At One Meeting With British Prime Minister David Lloyd George Baker Told Him That "If We Want Advice As To Who Should Command Our Armies We Would Ask For It. At The 1924 Democratic National Convention During Discussion Of The Party Platform Baker Was The Principal Advocate Of Language Committing The Party To American Membership In The League Of Nations. After Losing In The Platform Committee Which Advocated A National Referendum On The Question He Raised The Issue On The Floor Of The Convention. When His Allotted 20 Minutes Expired The Crowd Roared For Him To Continue. After An Hour He Left The Lectern To A Tremendous Ovation. Speakers Who Tried To Argue Against Him Were Booed. Yet The Final Vote Went Against Him By A Margin Of More Than 2 To 1. According To A New York Times Editorial "For A Moment That Vast Audience Was Lifted From Partisan Thoughts To Heights From Which It Could Have A Glimpse Of The Promised Land Of Peace. . Not Only Did Mr. Baker Do His Best But He Made One Of The Best And Most Moving Speeches Heard Of Late In Any Political Meeting. While There He Attracted Several Former Colleagues And Highly Regarded Scientists To The Team. Together They Made Advancements In Telescopic Instrumentation Jet Propulsion Contributing To Nasa's Early Planetary Exploration Missions And Infrared Astronomy. In June 1954 He Was One Of Twenty Scientists Under The Age Of Forty Identified By Fortune Magazine As "Top Young Scientists In U. S. Universities And Industry". In The Early 1970S He Began Working More Directly On The Resource/Environment Issues That He Had Been Developing In His Books. He Really Wanted To Start A Roycroft-Like Community In Garvanza Building Off The Artistic Movement Already On The Rise In The Small Community. Browne Worked With The Local Stained Glass Masters At Judson Studios To Build And Install A Circular Stained Glass Window In The Front Of The Building Facing Arroyo Glen Street. The Window Which Details A Franciscan Monk Reading A Manuscript While A Native American Man Works The Printing Press Was Intended By Browne To Represent California'S First Printing Press. Another Local Artisan Pasadena'S Ernest Batchelder Contributed His Tile-Making Talents By Crafting The Abbey'S Fireplace. He Was Also Influenced As Is Evident By Looking At It Some Of The California Missions. The Interior Of The Abbey Features A Number Of Dungeons A Cellar A Refectory And A Chapel. Over The Years The Chapel Was Host To Many Weddings. Browne Who Worked As A Piano Player Before He Started His Printing Company Often Played The Chapel'S Organ - An Instrument That Had Been Shipped From Germany And Hand-Assembled And Installed By Browne - At These Celebrations. Kronig Left For That Continent Later In 1924 And Paid Visits To The Important Centers For Theoretical-Physics Research In Germany And Copenhagen. Kronig Was Privileged To Be A Young Brilliant Physicist In That Glory-Day Of 20Th Century Theoretical Physics Which Made It Possible For Him To Live And Work Among The Great Physicists Of That Era Bohr Ehrenfest Heisenberg Pauli Kramers. In January 1925 When Kronig Was Still A Columbia University Phd Student He First Proposed Electron Spin After Hearing Pauli In Tübingen. Werner Heisenberg And Wolfgang Pauli Immediately Hated The Idea. They Had Just Ruled Out All Imaginable Actions From Quantum Mechanics. Now Kronig Was Proposing To Set The Electron Rotating In Space. Kronig Had Told Pauli About Electron Spin Before Pauli Had Published His Paper Showing That Two Electrons Can Inhabit The Same Orbital W. Pauli "On The Connexion Between The Completion Of Electron Groups In An Atom With The Complex Structure Of Spectra" Z. Physik 31 765Ff 1925. Months Later When Uhlenbeck And Goudsmit Came Up With Particle Spin It Seemed To Verify Pauli's Paper. Together With Rabi Kronig Gave The First Solution 1927 Of The Schrödinger Equation For The Rigid Symmetric Top. Werner Heisenberg In Developing Quantum Mechanics Involved Kronig In His Seminal Ideas Of The Theory. In The Beginning Of May 1925 Heisenberg Wrote Three Times To Ralph Kronig With Whom He Had Cooperated A Little Earlier In Copenhagen On The Spectral Theory Of Multi-Electron Atoms. In The Second Letter Dated 5 May Heisenberg Wrote Down In Some Detailed Equations Expressing The Transition To His Matrix Mechanics. The Kramers-Kronig Relation For Dispersion Was Derived By Kronig 1926 Independently Of Kramers 1927. Kronig 1931 1932 Published The First Theory Of X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure Which Contained Some Of The Basic Concepts Of The Modern Interpretation. The Kronig-Penney Model 1931 Is A One-Dimensional Model Of A Crystal That Shows How The Electrons In A Crystal Are Dispersed Into Allowed And Forbidden Bands By Scattering From The Extended Linear Array Of Atoms. Cyril John Radcliffe 1St Viscount Radcliffe 1899 -1977 Was A British Lawyer And Law Lord Best Known For His Role In The Partition Of India. His Maternal Grandfather Was President Of The Law Society Between 1890 And 1891. He Practiced At The Chancery Bar And Was Appointed A King's Counsel In 1935. During World War Ii Radcliffe Joined The Ministry Of Information Becoming Its Director-General By 1941 Where He Worked Closely With The Minister Brendan Bracken. In 1944 He Was Made A Knight Commander Of The Order Of The British Empire Kbe. He Returned To The Bar In 1945. Radcliffe A Man Who Had Never Been East Of Paris Was Given The Chairmanship Of The Two Boundary Committees Set Up With The Passing Of The Indian Independence Act. Radcliffe Was Given The Task Of Drawing The Borders For The New Nations Of Pakistan And India In A Way That Would Leave As Many Sikhs And Hindus In India And Muslims In Pakistan As Possible. He Was Given Only 5 Weeks To Complete The Job. Radcliffe Submitted His Partition Map On 9 August 1947 Which Split Apart Punjab And Bengal Almost In Half. The New Boundaries Were Formally Announced On 17 August 1947 - Three Days After Pakistan's Independence And Two Days After India Became Independent Of The United Kingdom. Radcliffe's Efforts Saw Some 14 Million People - Roughly Seven Million From Each Side - Flee Across The Border When They Discovered The New Boundaries Left Them In The "Wrong" Country. In The Violence That Ensued After Independence Estimates Of Loss Of Life Accompanying Or Preceding The Partition Vary Between Several Hundred Thousand And Two Million4A And Millions More Were Injured. After Seeing The Mayhem Occurring On Both Sides Of The Boundary Radcliffe Refused His Salary Of 40000 Rupees Then 3000 Pounds. Speaking Of His Experience As The Chairman Of Boundary Committees He Later Said- "I Had No Alternative The Time At My Disposal Was So Short That I Could Not Do A Better Job. Given The Same Period I Would Do The Same Thing. However If I Had Two To Three Years I Might Have Improved On What I Did." The Poet W. H. Auden Referred To Radcliffe's Role In The Partition Of India And Pakistan In His 1966 Poem "Partition". Interestingly No One Ever Criticized Him For Accepting This Ridiculous Job As Of Course Loyalty And Anticipated Loyalty To The Political Leadership Personally Is The Unspoken But Primary Requirement For Service In A Democracy. In 1949 Radcliffe Was Made A Lord Of Appeal In Ordinary Sworn Of The Privy Council And Created A Life Peer As Baron Radcliffe Of Werneth In The County Of Lancaster. Unusually He Had Not Previously Been A Judge. In The 1940S And 1950S He Chaired A String Of Public Enquiries In Addition To His Legal Duties And Continued To Hold Numerous Trusteeships Governorships And Chairmanships Right Up Until His Death. He Chaired The Committee Of Enquiry Into The Future Of The British Film Institute 1948 Whose Recommendations Led To The Modernisation Of The Bfi In The Post-War Period. From 1957 He Was Chairman Of The Radcliffe Committee Called To Enquire Into The Working Of The Monetary And Credit System. The Committee Published A Report Known As The Radcliffe Report Which Suggested Reforms On How Monetary Policy Is Run. He Was Also A Frequent Public Speaker And Wrote Numerous Books: He Gave The Bbc Reith Lecture In 1951 - A Series Of Seven Broadcasts Titled Power And The State Which Examined The Features Of Democratic Society And Considered The Problematic Notions Of Power And Authority. He Also Presented The Oxford University Romanes Lecture In 1963 On Mountstuart Elphinstone. He Served As The First Chancellor Of The University Of Warwick From Its Foundation In 1965 To 1977. He Argued For Placing The Supervision Of Africa Under An International Commission Zimmern Opposed The Creation Of A Democratic Powerful World State Arguing That It Was Too Mechanistic Impractical And Prone To Tyranny. Zimmern Also Opposed A Loose And Informal Concert System. He Became The Inaugural Woodrow Wilson Chair Of International Politics And The First Professor Of International Politics Also Known As International Relations In The World At Aberystwyth University 1919-1921. He Was Co-Founder Of The Royal Institute Of International Affairs 1919. His Book The Third British Empire Was Among The First To Apply The Expression "British Commonwealth" To The British Empire. He Was A Prominent Liberal Internationalist. He Was Also Credited With Coining The Phrase "Welfare State." After Leaving Aberystwyth He Taught At Cornell University In 1922 And 1923. Zimmern Was Deputy Director Of The League's Institute For Intellectual Co-Operation In Paris In The Mid-1920S. With His Wife Lucie Zimmern He Founded And Ran The Geneva School Of International Studies From 1923 To 1939. Zimmern Joined The British Labour Party In 1924 And Was Labour Candidate For Carnarvon Boroughs Against David Lloyd George In The General Election Of 1924. A Close Friend Of Ramsay Macdonald Zimmern Followed Him In 1931 When Macdonald Formed The National Government. He Became An Active Member Of The National Labour Organization And Frequently Wrote Articles For Its Journal The News-Letter. He Was The Inaugural Montague Burton Professor Of International Relations Oxford University 1930-1944. Zimmern Is An Influential Proponent Of Liberal Internationalism. He Was Nominated In 1947 For The Nobel Peace Prize In Connection With His Unesco Work. In Recompense He Was Provided With A Salary Of $2400 A House In Fukui And A Horse. In 1872-74 Griffis Taught Chemistry1 And Physics At Kaisei Gakko The Forerunner Of Tokyo Imperial University. He Prepared The New Japan Series Of Reading And Spelling Books 5 Vols. 1872. He Also Published Primers For Japanese Students Of The English Language; And He And Contributed To The Japanese Press And To Newspapers And Magazines In The United States Numerous Papers Of Importance On Japanese Affairs. Griffis Was Joined By His Sister Margaret Clark Griffis Who Became A Teacher At The Tokyo Government Girls' School Later To Become The Peeresses' School. By The Time They Left Japan In 1874 Griffis Had Befriended Many Of Japan's Future Leaders. Griffis Was A Member Of The Asiatic Society Of Japan The Asiatic Society Of Korea The Historical Society Of The Imperial University Of Tokyo And The Meirokusha. Returning To The United States Griffis Attended Union Theological Seminary; And After Finishing His Studies In 1877 He Was Called To The Ministry In A Series Of Churches-At The First Reformed Church Schenectady New York 1877-1886; At The Shawmut Congregational Church Boston Massachusetts 1886-1893; And At The First Congregational Church Ithaca New York 1893-1903. Concurrently At Union College In 1884 He Earned A Higher Degree Doctor Of Divinity D.D. Rutgers Awarded Him An Honorary Degree Doctor Of Humane Letters L.H.D. In 1899. In 1903 He Resigned From The Active Ministry To Devote Himself Exclusively To Writing And Lecturing. His Books On Japan And Japanese Culture Were Complemented With Extensive College And University Lecture Circuit Itineraries. In Addition To His Own Books And Articles During This Period He Also Joined Inazo Nitobe In Crafting What Became His Most Well-Known Book Bushido: The Soul Of Japan. In 1907 The Japanese Government Conferred The Order Of The Rising Sun Gold Rays With Rosette Which Represents The Fourth Highest Of Eight Classes Associated With The Award. In 1926 Griffis Was Invited To Return To Japan; And On This Trip The Japanese Government Conferred A Second Decoration. He Was Presented With The Order Of The Rising Sun Gold Rays With Neck Ribbon Which Represents The Third Highest Of Eight Classes. A Private Rail Car Was Provided By The Japanese Government And He Visited Several Cities In The Course Of This Return Trip. Griffis Was A Founding Member Of The National Institute Of Arts And Letters Later To Become The American Academy Of Arts And Letters The American Historical Association And The U.S. Naval Institute. One Of Griffis' Two Sons Stanton Griffis Would Become U.S. Ambassador To Poland Egypt Spain And Argentina Under President Truman. Stanton Griffis Was Ambassador To Argentina While Juan And Eva Peron Were In Power And Wrote Of His Experiences In A Book Titled Lying In State. He Was Born In Stuttgart The Son Of August Friedrich Hauff A Secretary In The Württemberg Ministry Of Foreign Affairs And Hedwig Wilhelmine Elsaesser Hauff. Young Hauff Lost His Father When He Was Seven Years Old And His Early Education Was Practically Self-Gained In The Library Of His Maternal Grandfather At Tübingen Where His Mother Had Moved After The Death Of Her Husband. In 1818 He Was Sent To The Klosterschule At Blaubeuren And In 1820 Began To Study At The University Of Tübingen. In Four Years He Completed His Philosophical And Theological Studies At The Tübinger Stift. On Leaving The University Hauff Became Tutor To The Children Of The Württemberg Minister Of War General Baron Ernst Eugen Von Hugel 1774-1849 And For Them Wrote His Märchen Fairy Tales Which He Published In His Märchen Almanach Auf Das Jahr 1826 Fairytale Almanac Of 1826. While There He Also Wrote The First Part Of The Mitteilungen Aus Den Memoiren Des Satan 1826; Memoirs Of Beelzebub And Der Mann Im Mond 1825; The Man In The Moon. The Latter A Parody Of The Sentimental And Sensual Novels Of Heinrich Clauren The Pseudonym Of Carl Gottlieb Samuel Heun 1771-1854 Was Actually Published Under His Name. As A Result Clauren Brought And Won An Action For Damages Against Hauff Whereupon Hauff Followed Up The Attack In His Witty And Sarcastic Kontroverspredigt Über H. Clauren Und Den Mann Im Mond 1826 And Attained His Original Object: The Moral Annihilation Of The Mawkish And Unhealthy Literature With Which Clauren Was Flooding The Country. Meanwhile Inspired By Sir Walter Scott's Novels Hauff Wrote The Historical Romance Lichtenstein: Romantische Sage Aus Der Wuerttembergischen Geschichte 1826; Lichtenstein: Romantic Saga From The History Of Württemberg Which Became Hugely Popular In Germany And Especially In Swabia Treating As It Did The Most Interesting Period In The History Of That Country The Reign Of Duke Ulrich 1487-1550. This Novel Was The Inspiration For Duke Ulrich's Heir Duke Wilhelm Of Urach To Rebuild The Castle Which Had Fallen Into Disrepair In Accordance With Hauff's Description. While On A Journey To France The Netherlands And Northern Germany He Wrote The Second Part Of The Memoiren Des Satan And Some Short Novels Among Them The Charming Die Bettlerin Vom Pont Des Arts 1826; The True Lover's Fortune; Or The Beggar Of The Pont Des Arts And His Masterpiece The Novella Phantasien Im Bremer Ratskeller 1827; The Wine-Ghosts Of Bremen. He Also Published Some Short Poems Which Have Passed Into Volkslieder Among Them "Morgenrot Morgenrot Leuchtest Mir Zum Frühen Tod" "Dawn's Light You Are Lighting My Way To Early Death" And "Steh Ich In Finstrer Mitternacht" "I Stand In The Darkest Midnight". The Novella Jud Süß "Süss The Jew" Infamous For Its Antisemitism Was Published In 1827; A Film Version Was Produced By The Nazi Party As Propaganda In 1940. In January 1827 Hauff Undertook The Editorship Of The Stuttgart Morgenblatt And In The Following Month Married His Cousin Luise Hauff But His Happiness Was Prematurely Cut Short By His Death From Typhoid Fever On 18 November 1827. His Sämtliche Werke Collected Works With A Biography Edited By Gustav Schwab Were Published In 3 Volumes 1830-1834 And 5 Volumes 18Th Ed. In 1882. They Were Also Published By Felix Bobertag 1891-1897. A Selection From His Works Was Published By M. Mendheim 3 Vols 1891. A Six-Volume Edition With A Biographical Introduction By Alfred Weile Was Published In 1911 By A. Weichert. We Can Only Await Thousands Of Similar Volumes One For Each Of The Colonial States And Territories Around The World Covering Their Occupation By The Various European Asian And African Colonizers And Expansionists.
