Lithograph inspired by an extract from Vitraux by Laurent Tailhade. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints were published in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold at 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too insubstantial owes its reputation not to its own beauty but rather to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft at once is more suited than any other to receive a beautiful printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. French collectors' interest in artistic posters intensified in the early 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie."" The poster originally popular and plastered in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and devoted to preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the luxury illustrated book. Contemporary binding in full marbled calf. Raised spine decorated. Red morocco title-labels. Brown calf volume labels heavily rubbed with partially illegible numbering. Lacking at tail of volumes I and II. Tail-caps of volumes III and IV torn away. Head-caps of volumes III and IV worn down. Lacks to upper boards of volumes I and III with small lacks to lower edges. Generally rubbed. Constellation of wormholes on first compartment of volume I with some holes on third compartment likewise on fifth compartment of volume III. Lower corners bumped some worn bare. Scattered small worming. The Treatise on Police while secondarily being a history of regulations in Antiquity and the exercise of police power contains all ordinances and rules in every domain that is everything relating to public law food commerce spectacles prisons. for the city of Paris. The first volume also treats the various police corps and their administration. It was in 1667 that Lamoignon First President of the Parliament of Paris suggested the idea to Nicolas Delamare of writing a work describing police methods in a great city; Colbert's archives and rich library were opened to him for this purpose. ""This work is not"" says the author ""a simple collection of ordinances as I had first proposed; these are dissertations on all matters of police; it is a history of all laws and all regulations from the establishment of the most ancient republics to the present."" From the first pages of his Treatise Delamare gave a broad definition of police as an ""art of procuring a comfortable and tranquil life."" Delamare's original plan envisioned 12 books; only 6 appeared. The Sotheby's photograph was sold as part of a sale dedicated to Marcel Proust; Proust remained a fervent admirer of Daudet whose work evoked for him the charms of childhood. Henri Piazza also planned a very luxurious secret printing of 50 copies on papier japon with wide margins and 50 in black and white on papier chine at the considerable price of 30F. This well-sized print is superbly printed in colors on the most prestigious of papers: japon. Thick creamy satin and with a nice sheen it contributes to making each page a work of art in itself. Its qualities of absorption and its affinity for colors make it the ideal support for these lovely lithographs. The interest of French collectors for artistic posters grew from the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne invented a term for this new form of collection: affichomanie' or poster mania. The initially common poster displayed in the streets of Paris became a work of art and its ephemeral material became precious and made to last. Chez l'auteur Paris 1765 25 x 34 cm relié First edition of this collection of 75 plates including 4 engraved titles: Manière d'accoupler les colonnes et pilastres de l'ordre dorique one title and 11 plates - the catalogue at the end announces 6 plates; Parallele de grands entablements et de charpentes à l'italienne one title and 8 plates - the catalogue at the end announces 9; Suite de croisée des plus beaux palais de Rome one title and 8 plates; Les Eglises des stations de Rome one title and 10 plates; Suite de ruines d'architecture 33 plates the catalogue announces 24. The different copies held in public collections or in trade records are all different and do not contain the same parts and sometimes not the same number of plates per section. Dumont offered at his residence several collections whose entirety is proposed at the end of the volume being 230 plates contained in 14 collections. Collectors therefore chose certain titles and rejected others thus forming their own volume. Furthermore certain titles in this volume are not present in the catalogue. The Suite de ruine d'architecture contains in this copy 33 plates while the table announces 24. Ultimately this section also contains Vases et fontaines de feu M. Challes with 3 plates this feature is shared with the copy at the Bibliothèque nationale. The additional plates come from other titles in the catalogue and if one considers several different copies one notes that the plates were sold with a certain disorder. This copy contains a section with a frontispiece and 10 plates whose title is not present in the catalogue and whose author is no longer Dumont himself but Israel Henriet entitled: Les Eglises des stations de Rome. One cannot know whether this collection was sold by Dumont or whether the collector already possessed it when integrating it with Dumont's titles. Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Red morocco title label. Lacks to joints at head. Lower joint split at foot. Rubbing. Scratches on boards. A large dark stain on each board. 2 corners slightly bumped. Dry stamp on the first 2 title pages: G. Lageat. Architecte à Lannion. Some collections notably the first ones have the plates in landscape format the others in standard format. The entire set of plates consists of etchings and engravings on copper engraved by Dumont Charpentier and Germain the plates of Les Eglises des stations de Rome by Israel Henriet. Numerous plates bear the date 1765. The etchings in the Ruines d'architecture section are particularly beautiful and very close in spirit to Piranesi's plates. Chez l'auteur hardcover

Half brown shagreen binding with corners signed Champs-Stroobant at the top of the endpaper. Smooth spine with mosaic work decorated with mirrored mosaic tooling in red and black with Greek key roll borders. Fillet lines on boards. Top edge gilt. Spine uniformly faded. Traces of rubbing. Very fresh copy with original wrappers preserved uncut paper full margins. Handsome copy. Literary hoax in which Bilitis is presented in the translator Pierre Louys's preface as a young Greek woman from the 6th century who would have lived on the island of Lesbos where she would have been Sappho's rival. Pierre Louys pushed the hoax so far as to create false bibliographic references and a large part of the critics were deceived by it. Debussy set 3 of these pieces to music as early as 1897. The poems and songs trace the life of a young virgin her first erotic stirrings and her sapphic loves. Société du Mercure de France hardcover
