‎"La promise"" - Lithographie originale sur Chine - L'Estampe Moderne‎

‎Paris: Imprimerie Champenoispour CH. MassonH. Piazza 1898. Fine. Imprimerie Champenois pour CH. Masson H. Piazza Paris Avril 1898 24 x 34.50 cm une feuille Rare original lithograph executed by Fernand Gottlob for L'Estampe Moderne series number 12 published in April 1898. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in the lower margin mounted on a sheet of laid paper with the numbered stamp of the deluxe issue on the reverse pale marginal foxing small dark dampstain in corner light trace of the stamp from the previous engraving on recto. Lithograph inspired by an extract from Le Mâle written by Camille Lemonnier. A magnificent French monthly publication issued between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consisted of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of a beautiful format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too inconsistent owes its reputation not to its own beauty but to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft together is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters amplified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to qualify this fever invented the term ""affichomanie."" The poster originally popular and placarded in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral support became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the deluxe illustrated book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. A handsome copy in symbolist style. ‎Bruxelles Brussels: N. J. GregoirWouters et cie 1839. Fine. N. J. Gregoir Wouters et cie Bruxelles Brussels 1839 14.50 x 22.50 cm 4 tomes en 2 volumes reliés Belgian first edition published the same year as the French edition; and illustrated with 4 lithographs. Contemporary half glazed camel calf binding. Spine with flat false bands decorated with 3 blind-stamped fleurons with roulettes on the bands and blind fillets. Chocolate shagreen title and volume labels. By deliberate aesthetic choice and to correspond to the binding in two volumes only two title pages have been retained volume I and volume II each at the beginning of each volume thus in the volumes the chapters follow without transition; chapter VIII following chapter VII from the end of the first volume. Handsome copy very fresh. This scientific circumnavigation commanded by Duperrey took place from 1822 to 1825 it mainly concerns Oceania although the first volume focuses on Brazil the Malvinas Islands and Peru; the other three deal with Tahiti Bora Bora New Ireland and New South Wales New Zealand Sandwich Islands Australia Mauritius. Lesson was the naturalist and the ship's pharmacist physician responsible for recording and collecting specimens and samples; he would be the first to give a description of birds of paradise. Apart from a chapter in the voyages of Dumont Durville who was an officer on La Coquille this is the only account we have of this voyage around the world by Duperrey. The work is very rich in detailed information both on the customs of the different peoples visited and on the fauna and flora Lesson's perspective being essentially scientific. ‎"Cela vous ennuirait-il sic d'écrire à Mirbeau qu'un Signac à votre avis ne ressemble pas plus à un Seurat qu'un Hokousai à un Hiroshigé. "" • Signed autograph letter addressed to Camille Pissarro‎

‎1894. Fine. s. d. 23 janvier 1894 22.60 x 17.50 cm 2 pages sur un double feuillet déplié Autograph letter signed by Paul Signac addressed to Camille Pissarro written in black ink over two pages and signed with the artist’s monogram. This letter was transcribed in the article by Pierre Michel and Christian Limousin entitled ""Octave Mirbeau et Paul Signac - Une lettre inédite de Signac à Mirbeau"" in Cahiers Octave Mirbeau no. 16 March 2009 pp. 202-210. ""Mon cher Maître Cela vous ennuirait-il sic d'écrire à Mirbeau qu'un Signac à votre avis ne ressemble pas plus à un Seurat qu'un Hokousai à un Hiroshigé. si toutes fois sic le reproche d'imitation dont il cherche à m'accabler vous semble injuste. L'amitié que vous m'avez toujours témoignée et les compliments que vous avez bien voulu faire de mes toiles m'autorisent à vous demander ce service. Cordialement. PS"" A fine letter in which Paul Signac seeks the support of his master Camille Pissarro after a scathing critique published by Octave Mirbeau in L'Echo de Paris. In this article featured on the front page of L'Echo de Paris of 23 January 1894 Octave Mirbeau spares Signac no harshness: « M. Signac a voulu continuer Seurat. Why this obsession with Seurat « At the beginning of 1894 the position of Mirbeau Geffroy Pissarro and a few others was to consider that Neo-Impressionism had in fact died in 1891 with the passing of Seurat. Their retrospective view of this artistic venture led them to think that it was not a continuation of Impressionism by new scientific means but a reaction against it even a liquidation of the movement.» Cahiers Octave Mirbeau. Pissarro’s reply to Signac also transcribed by Michel and Limousin was not long in coming: it « l'ennuirait d'écrire ce que vous me demandez à Mirbeau et cela pour plusieurs raisons. . « Disheartened and deprived of the authority of a master revered by the critic Signac was left to devise himself without delay the reply to address to Mirbeau . » ibid. This response took the form of a long letter written the same day as the one offered here and now preserved at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Austin Texas: « Je reconnais hautement que c'est Seurat qui a insta unknown‎

‎Lettre à la Présidente • Letter to the President‎

‎s. l. Paris: S. n. 1850. Fine. S. n. s. l. • Paris 1850 1890 11 x 18 cm broché sous chemise et étui First edition one of 50 copies printed anonymously on papier japon. First edition one of 50 copies printed anonymously on papier japon. Illustrated with an erotic frontispiece by Félicien Rops on chine. Custom chemise and slipcase in half morocco and paper boards signed Boichot some discreet restorations to the spine and covers some discreet restorations to the top margin of the frontispiece not affecting the engraving. “La Présidente” honorary nickname given to Apollonie Sabatier alias Aglaëe Savatier her real name was one of the most captivating Salon hostesses of the 19th century. She inspired an ethereal love in Baudelaire who composed his most mystical poems in Les Fleurs du Mal in her honor. The other artists who frequented the apartment on Rue Frochot during her famous Sunday dinners had more licentious feelings for this woman of surprising wit and beauty. The sculptor Clésinger portrayed her in his lascivious “woman stung by a snake”; Flaubert wrote sensual letters to her ending with “the very sincere affection of one who alas only kisses your hand”; she has long since been recognized as the model for Gustave Courbet's scandalous The Origin of the World. Gautier sent her this letter in 1850. Sabatier made copies which she never published but privately distributed to her guests: “In October 1850 Gautier sent her this very long letter farcical and obscene from Rome commenting with Rabelaisian exaggeration what himself and his friend Cormenin had learned regarding sexuality during their travels. Gautier knew that his freedom of expression would not offend Madame Sabatier. He had long since accustomed her to it and he prided himself on his “smut” to brighten up the friendly social gatherings of the Rue Frochot.” Dictionnaire des œuvres érotiques Honored indeed by this priapic attention ‘La Présidente' gave copies to all her guests and the reading of Gautier's “indecent prose” became a popular event at Parisian soirées. However the letter was ultimately published – luxuriously but confidentially – after the recipient's death in 1890. After this first edition of 50 copies on papier japon a second edition on papier vélin followed a few months later with a larger print run and without the Rops frontispiece. A rare beautiful and very sought after copy. S. n. hardcover‎

‎à Paris: Chez Antoine Vuarin Antoine Le Bouc 1642. Fine. Chez Antoine Vuarin Antoine Le Bouc à Paris 1642 22 x 34.50 cm In-folio relié First edition published by Antoine Le Bouc in 1642 and later reissued for sale in 1684 with a cancel slip pasted over the original imprint bearing the updated address of Antoine Vuarin. This intriguing bibliographical feature suggests that a portion of the original printing remained unsold. Notably the work was never reprinted. Epistle addressed to Cardinal Richelieu. Fine allegorical frontispiece by Avice. The illustrations include a genealogical chart of the House of Orléans; two genealogical tables of the House of Luxembourg; four plates demonstrating the Marquis de Gesvre's descent from Charlemagne; a plate detailing the quarterings of the Marquis de Noirmoustier's arms; a genealogical table of the Bourbons; and 106 in-text heraldic shields approximately 10x15 cm all engraved by Pierre Nolin. Contemporary full brown calf binding. Spine with raised bands richly gilt. Surface abrasion to upper board and three wormholes. One small wormhole at the upper inner margin developing into a narrow gallery from p. 60 then gradually diminishing. Minor tear 1 cm in the outer margin of the Luxembourg genealogical plate. Lacks the preliminary blank before the frontispiece. A very attractive copy remarkably well-preserved. The Celestine convent desecrated during the French Revolution was the second royal necropolis after Saint-Denis. The tombs were distributed throughout the Orléans Chapel—where the hearts of illustrious members of the dynasty were interred including Charles VI Philippe d'Orléans François II and Charles IX—and throughout the church choir and nave which housed the remains and tombs of the Luxembourg Montmorency Lusignan and La Trémoille families. This study is especially valuable as it is the only work of its kind to document the tombs of the Celestine convent long since vanished. Converted into a timber depot after the Revolution then a barracks under the Consulate the site was partially destroyed by the opening of Boulevard Henri IV in 1866 and eventually razed entirely to make way for the construction of the new Celestine barracks sealing the fate of the monument and its precious tombs. Its texture smooth and soft at once is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. French collectors' interest in artistic posters intensified in the early 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""postomania."" The poster originally popular and plastered on the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising purpose and elevate it to the rank of a work of art in its own right on the same level as the deluxe illustrated book.
