The text of the tales is entirely engraved in italics and superbly printed on strong laid paper. The illustrations in the text are finely engraved on steel they are due to the imagination of Pauquet Marvy Jeanron Jacque Beaucé Jules Compagnon and engraved by Monin. The 15-page notice on the life and works of Perrault by Paul Jacob appeared for the first time in the 1836 edition the same is true for the dissertation in fine on fairy tales. One general title in bistre and 9 frontispieces in bistre; each page of each tale entirely engraved with text and composition framing the text or as headpieces tailpieces. Publisher's binding in half dark green shagreen. Spine with false raised bands richly decorated with ornate compartments. All edges gilt. White glazed watered paper for the endpapers. Signs of rubbing. 2 frontispieces partly detached. Some small scattered foxing on paper that is quite white with full margins. A handsome copy. ""It is one of the most beautiful illustrated books of the 19th century and perhaps the rarest in fine condition."" Carteret Le trésor du bibliophile romantique et moderne. This edition is very rare and is encountered only very infrequently just like the one published by Curmer it found itself as Carteret affirms in the hands of children with little bibliophilic sense. Nerval's letter   Louis Desessart Théophile Gautier's appointed publisher co-published Nerval’s play Léo Burckart with Barba in 1839. Following financial difficulties he was forced to take refuge «in that sad and charming city of Brussels».   The three friends wrote this letter from Paris where they had reunited following Nerval’s long journey to the East: «I spent six months in Egypt; then three months in Syria – four months in Constantinople and the rest en route. It’s quite beautiful. I only enjoy myself while traveling and try to live twice as much as I can.»   This journey deeply impressed Théophile Gautier who would only travel to Turkey and Egypt years later: «I am in Paris and wish I were in Cairo from where Gérard is returning.» The exoticism of distant lands starkly contrasts with the melancholy and severity of Europe: «How sad Paris is when one returns from sunlit countries.» Nerval And in Paris far from dreams of escape life means toil and melancholy: «We are like sick people who are never comfortable anywhere. I think the good times are gone and the golden hours of the past when we spoke such wise follies will never return. What’s the point of living if we must work and cannot see our friends or write to them or do anything we would like» Gautier The two writers express great compassion for their friend’s Belgian exile with Brussels appearing as the capital of spleen: «What! You’re still in that sad and charming city of Brussels! . One of the 50 grand luxe proofs printed on Japon paper with wide margins artist's signature and date in the plate publisher's embossed stamp showing a child's profile on the lower margin a numbered stamp of the tirage de luxe on the back; engraving preceded by a protective tissue guard with the name of the artist the title and a poem; as well as a blank protective tissue guard. Lithograph inspired by a poem extract from Leconte de Lisle's Chansons écossaises printed as a caption on the print's protective tissue guard. A magnificent monthly French publication published between May 1897 and April 1899 ""L'Estampe moderne"" included unpublished chromolithographs which unlike other magazine such as ""Les Maîtres de l'Affiche"" and as is stipulated on the protective tissue guard were specially made for the magazine by each artist. There are thus 100 prints that appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau the Pre-Raphaelites Orientalism and the Belle Epoque. Each delivery of four prints had 2000 copies and sold for 3.50F with 100 copies on Japon offered for 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a high-luxury confidential print: 50 copies with wide margins on Japon and 50 in black and white at the considerable price of 30F. This beautifully-sized print is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japon. Thick silky satin and pearly the paper helps to make each page an artwork in its own right. Its ink absorption quality and its affinity with colours also make it the ideal medium for these beautiful lithographs. French collectors' interest in artistic posters grew from the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne invented the term “affichomanie” “poster-mania” for this growing interest. The poster originally common-place and plastered across the streets of the capital then became an object of art and its ephemeral medium then became precious and dedicated to conservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising role and elevate it to the rank of a work of art in its own right in the same way as the luxury illustrated book. He assembled and printed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most well-known European artists of the time: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. A beautiful copy in an Art Nouveau style. A key witness and actor of his time the art critic and collector Félix Fénéon assists the writer Gabriel Mourey in his search for the correspondence between Paul Adam and Maurice Barrès: ""Le romancier et occultiste Paul Adam fut comme vous savez très lié à Maurice Barrès. Candidats boulangistes dans deux circonscriptions lorraines contiguës il firent fraternellement une campagne électorale et journalistique à laquelle leur amitié ne survécut guère. Comment retrouver tous les papiers de Paul Adam mort il y a une vingtaine d'années Mme Paul Adam vit-elle encore. - je n'en sais rien. Mais il est probable que vive une de ses soeurs veuve depuis quelques trois ans de ce L. Cappiello auteur de tant d'affiches - peintre elle aussi et de plus fort sourde. Leur demeure était 8 rue Lechatelier XVIIe. Par Mme L. Cappiello vous retrouverez peut-être des papiers barrésiens laissés par Paul Adam. A leading figure of the avant-garde Fénéon possessed a singular gift for discovering major artists. A deliberately discreet and eccentric dandy he devoted himself almost religiously to all that contributed to a new artistic sensibility. A staunch defender of the Neo-Impressionists Seurat and Signac and a friend of Mallarmé Camille Pissarro Paul Adam and Gustave Kahn Fénéon was successively an anarchist and a communist and directed a dozen small reviews. He published groundbreaking works such as Rimbaud’s Illuminations André Gide’s Paludes and James Joyce’s Dedalus. A prolific journalist he wrote for numerous publications often unsigned or under fanciful pseudonyms such as Gil de Bache Porphyre Kalouguine and even Thérèse or Louise. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins artist's signature and date in the plate publisher's blind stamp representing a child's profile in lower margin laid down on a sheet of laid paper with on verso the numbered stamp of the deluxe issue pale marginal foxing tiny corner lack a small dampstain and a tear both in margin not touching the engraving. Lithograph inspired by a poem by Jean Richepin En ramant. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of unpublished chromolithographs which unlike other reviews such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the review. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the end of the 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints is printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also provides a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too inconsistent owes its reputation not to its own beauty but indeed to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft together is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters grew at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to qualify this fever invented the term ""affichomanie"". The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a work of art in its own right on the same level as the illustrated deluxe book.
