Theodore de Bèze alone embodies and personifies Christian humanism; above all a churchman he was the undisputed leader of Protestantism from 1575 and directed the Church of Geneva for fifty years after Calvin. He was also a Latinist and Hellenist playwright poet and artist statesman and diplomat in the service of the cause of the Reformation as his correspondence amply testifies. Through his immense correspondence which surpasses in scope the already prodigious ones of Heinrich Bullinger and Calvin he organized and encouraged the defense of the reformed faith throughout the European continent. The Lettres chinoises inaugurated by the same author as the Lettres juives have this typical Enlightenment design of comparing the customs and habits of several civilizations; the work takes up the scheme always humorous of the first work of this type: L'espion de la cour de Marana then Montesquieu's Lettres persanes. A Chinese narrator writes to his compatriots from different places in Europe Moscow Stockholm Paris. The work is always supposed to make us question the strangeness of our own thoughts and customs. D'Argens also describes several journeys to the Orient with interesting information on the customs and institutions of Oriental countries. Like the Lettres cabalistiques or Jewish letters by the same author the Lettres chinoises were published in periodicals. The philosophical dreams numbering twenty accounts of dreams are authentic utopias; the first tells of a land inhabited and governed by monkeys Singimanie; the second takes a monkey and the narrator to the Changijournes a people who continually change their clothes and fashion. A folio edition was published simultaneously in Strasbourg by Jean Rihel reprinted from the 1558 edition. This 1558 edition is the earliest we have found but according to some sources the first edition would date from 1555. Printer's device on title page. Contemporary binding in full pigskin over wooden boards. Spine with three raised bands. Covers stamped with several friezes and floral frames as well as a garland of medallion portraits of Emperor Charles V. Traces of clasps. Discreet restorations to joints one repaired tear at the level of a raised band second cover with some stains. Missing one endpaper before the title. Numerous contemporary manuscript annotations others later on the front pastedown and title page as well as a library stamp from a Strasbourg seminary. Facing the rigors implemented by Francis I against the Protestants the historian and philologist Jean Sleidan was forced to settle in Strasbourg where he wrote his Commentary on the state of religion and the republic under the reign of Charles V. The work through its study of political undercurrents forms a rigorous history of the Reformation from 1517 to 1556 forming the basis of modern historiography for any history of Protestantism not only German but European. Exceptional and moving signed autograph inscription from Maurice Blanchot to his mother and sister: ""Pour vous mes très chères ces pages hélas bien anciennes en toute affection. Maurice. / Mais avant le commencement il y a le recommencement qui fait de la lumière une fascination de toute chose une image et de nous le coeur vide du ressassement éternel"" ""For you my very dear ones these pages alas quite old with all my affection. Maurice. / But before the beginning there is the re-beginning which makes light a fascination everything an image and us the empty heart of eternal rehearsal"". Half-title page bearing the inscription very slightly and marginally shaded. Marguerite Blanchot renowned organist at Chalon cathedral remained all her life in the family home with her mother and aunt. ""She gradually became for the family like the memory of origins."" Very close to Maurice she corresponded regularly with the writer who showed her great gratitude for her devotion to their disabled mother. While Blanchot's intense affection for his mother and sister shows through in his dedications we know almost nothing of their relationships. In the only biographical essay on Blanchot Christophe Bident reveals however: ""Marguerite Blanchot venerated her brother Maurice. Very proud of him . she attached great importance to his political ideas . She read extensively . They telephoned each other corresponded. From a distance they shared the same natural authority the same concern for discretion."" Blanchot indeed sent her numerous works from his library maintaining with her a continuous intellectual bond. As for Blanchot's passion for his mother it is in the course of his work that we discover the most beautiful testimonies: ""Perhaps the power of the maternal figure borrows its brilliance from the very power of fascination and one could say that if the Mother exercises this fascinating attraction it is because appearing when the child lives entirely under the gaze of fascination she concentrates in herself all the powers of enchantment"". Cultivating absolute discretion Blanchot pushed the art of effacement even into his manuscript dedications generally succinct and written almost systematically on cards attached to the rare works he offered to his close friends. In contrast in these precious inscriptions to his mother and sister Blanchot offers himself in all his fragility and reveals a hitherto unknown intimacy. Fine copy perfectly established. The author himself calls his Harangues ""the fury of youth"" expressing thereby that they break free from rules. The work contains 22 harangues many on subjects from Greek mythology. The harangues are speeches pieces of eloquence addressed to an audience; at the end of each harangue the effect on the assembly is given; each harangue being preceded by an Argument a prologue allowing the stakes of the discourse to be situated. A fitting example is that of Agamemnon having killed a sacred deer and whose Diana demands in compensation the sacrifice of a young virgin namely Iphigenia his own daughter; the hero addresses the army to express his fault and his paternal feelings. Unlike the Mémoires sur la Chine composed of letters from missionary fathers sent to France this work brings together Mairan's letters addressed to Father Parrenin in China in Beijing. Father Parrenin's responses were published in Recueils des Lettres édifiantes et curieuses des missionnaires. Based on his reflections and work Mairan submits various hypotheses about China notably the journey of an Egyptian colony to China in very ancient times the state of the sciences in China their beliefs and superstitions writing a parallel between Chinese Egyptian and Greek architectures. Besides the letters on China the work is completed with various treatises by the author one on the fable of Olympus on the northern lights of which the author would provide a complete treatise a second on the balance of Piles painters another on monsters finally a letter to the Count of Caylus on an ancient engraved stone.
