Per Wikipedia Ruth Crawford Seeger 1901 -1953 Was An American Composer And Folk Music Specialist. Crawford Moved To Chicago In 1921 Where She Enrolled At The American Conservatory Of Music. Crawford's Focus At The Conservatory Quickly Shifted From Piano Performance To Composition. During Her Second Year There She Began Composition And Theory Studies With Adolf Weidig And Wrote Several Early Works Including A Nocturne For Violin And Piano 1923 And A Set Of Theme And Variations For Piano 1923. While Crawford Continued To Study Theory And Composition With Weidig At The American Conservatory Of Music Through 1929 In 1924 She Also Began Private Piano Lessons With Djane Lavoie-Herz. Herz One Of The Most Prestigious Piano Teachers In Chicago At The Time Had A Profound Impact On Crawford's Intellectual And Musical Life. During This Time Crawford Met The Leading Chicago Poet Carl Sandburg Whose Writings She Eventually Set To Music. In 1925 She Composed "The Adventures Of Tom Thumb" An Experiment Which Combined The Spoken Word With Music. Crawford Spent The Summer Of 1929 At The Macdowell Colony On A Scholarship Where She Began A Friendship With Fellow Composer Marion Bauer And Began Work On Her Five Songs Set To Poems By Sandburg. In The Fall Of That Year Crawford Moved Into The New York Home Of Music Patron Blanche Walton And Began Studying Composition With Charles Seeger Father Of Pete Seeger. In 1930 She Became The First Female Composer To Receive The Guggenheim Fellowship And Went To Berlin And Paris. Crawford Subsequently Travelled To Vienna And Budapest To Meet Composers Alban Berg And Béla Bartók To Discuss Her Music And Gain Support For Publication. Though Surrounded By Exponents Of German Modernism She Chose To Study And Compose Alone. Seeger's Ideas Communicated By Letter Were Crucial To The Development Of Her Style And Selections. She And Charles Seeger Married In 1932 After Her Subsequent Trip To Paris. At The International Society For Contemporary Music Festival In Amsterdam 1933 Her Three Songs For Voice Oboe Percussion And Strings Represented The United States. Crawford Seeger And Her Family Moved To Washington D.C. In 1936 After Charles' Appointment To The Music Division Of The Resettlement Administration. There Crawford Seeger Worked Closely With John And Alan Lomax At The Archive Of American Folk Song At The Library Of Congress To Preserve And Teach American Folk Music. Crawford Seeger's Reputation As A Composer Rests Chiefly On Her New York Compositions Written Between 1930 And 1933 Which Exploit Dissonant Counterpoint And American Serial Techniques. During These Years Crawford Began To Incorporate Polytonality And Tone Clusters Into Her Compositions. She Was One Of The First Composers To Extend Serial Processes To Musical Elements Other Than Pitch And To Develop Formal Plans Based On Serial Operations. Her Technique May Have Been Influenced By The Music Of Schoenberg Although They Met Only Briefly During Her Studies In Germany. Many Of Her Works From This Period Employ Dissonant Counterpoint A Theoretical Compositional System Developed By Charles Seeger And Used By Henry Cowell Johanna Beyer And Others. The Plesiosaur Morenosaurus Stocki A Flamingo Phoenicopterus Stocki And A Fossil Bat Desmodus Stocki Are Among The Species That Have Been Named After Him. Stock Was Elected To The American Academy Of Arts And Sciences In 1941 The American Philosophical Society In 1946 And The United States National Academy Of Sciences In 1948. Hildegarde Howard 1901 -1998 Was An American Pioneer In Paleornithology. She Was Mentored By The Famous Ornithologist Joseph Grinnell At The Museum Of Vertebrate Zoology Mvz And In Avian Paleontology. She Was Well Known For Her Discoveries In The La Brea Tar Pits Among Them The Rancho La Brea Eagles. She Discovered And Described Pleistocene Flightless Waterfowl At The Prehistoric Ballona Wetlands Of Coastal Los Angeles County At Playa Del Rey. In 1953 Howard Became The Third Woman To Be Awarded The Brewster Medal. She Was The First Woman President Of The Southern California Academy Of Sciences. She Wrote 150 Papers Throughout Her Career. Her First Biology Teacher Pirie Davidson Inspired Her To Change Her Concentration From Journalism To Biology; Davidson Helped Her Get A Job Working For The Paleontologist Chester Stock. She Completed Her Bachelor's Degree At U.C. Berkeley In 1924 Where She Took Courses In Paleontology. That Same Year Howard Joined The Scientific Staff Of The Los Angeles County Museum Of Natural History Part-Time; Her Work There On The Extinct Turkey Parapavo Californicus Was Credited Towards Her Master's Degree Which Was Received In 1926 At Berkeley. At Wellesley She Studied Sociology With Emily Greene Balch Who Would Go On To Win The 1946 Nobel Peace Prize. While Still At Wellesley College She Worked For A Time At The Denison Settlement House In Boston Founded By Balch And The Nurse's Settlement House In San Francisco. On Leaving College She Moved Back To Long Beach Where She Donated Money To Various Civic Causes Including Long Beach's First Hospital Seaside Hospital And The Walt Whitman School Private And Her Settlement House Both In The Boyle Heights District On The East-Side Of Los Angeles. She And Her Husband Often Invited Ghetto Youth Of Working Mothers To Stay On Their Farm In Orange County To Divert Them From Gangs And Delinquency. In 1907 She Founded What Is Now Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. She Also Helped Found The Town Of Costa Mesa California. When Long Beach Formed Its Police Force In 1908 Captain Tom Williams Brought Fanny Bixby Onto The Force Because Of Her Extensive Philanthropic Work In The City. She Was Sworn In As A Special Police Matron On January 1 1908 Making Her One Of The First Women Police Officers In The Country. Fanny Bixby Worked With The Long Beach Police Force For Four Years. An Admirer Of Leo Tolstoy Fanny Bixby Was A Socialist And A Pacifist. She Published Some Poetry In The California Socialist Party's Newspaper The Oakland World And She Attended At Least One Antiwar Meeting In Pasadena Before The Espionage Act Of 1917 Made It Risky To Speak Out Against The War. Her 1920 Play The Jazz Of Patriotism Was About A Woman Who Is Ostracized For Refusing To Salute The Flag. It Premiered At The Egan Theater Later The Musart Theater In Downtown Los Angeles. Fanny Bixby Met Her Future Husband W. Carl Spencer At A Socialist Party Meeting In 1917. During World War Ii He Was For A Time Chief Of Research And Analysis In London In The Office Of Strategic Services.5 He Was Also Fire Marshal For St. Paul's Cathedral In London Which Withstood The Blitz With Minor Damages. He Was Minister Of Police Between 1810 And 1814. During His Tenure As Commanding Officer At Vincennes Savary Became Embroiled In Controversy Due To The Summary Execution Of The Duc D'enghien. Hulin The Presiding Officer At The Court-Martial Later Accused Savary Of Obstructing His Attempts To Appeal For Mercy To Bonaparte. According To Hulin Savary Intervened When Hulin Was Drafting The Appeal. Although Savary Denied These Allegations His Denial Has Not Been Widely Accepted By Historians. Savary Was Among The Last To Desert Napoleon Following His Abdication On 11 April 1814 And Among The First To Welcome His Return From Elba In 1815 During The Hundred Days. Following The Battle Of Waterloo He Accompanied Napoleon To Rochefort And Sailed With Him To Plymouth Aboard Hms Bellerophon. After Escaping He Traveled To Smyrna Where He Settled For A While Before Eventually Being Allowed To Return To France. Later He Settled In Rome. In Algiers He Antagonized French Civil Authorities With His Authoritarian Treatment Of Arabs With Disregard For Algerians' Religious Beliefs. In Spite Of Protests The Ketchaoua Mosque Was Confiscated In December 1831 And Consecrated As The Cathedral Of Saint Philippe On Christmas Day 1832.He Was Also Responsible For The Massacre Of The Local El Ouffia Tribe Alongside Maximilien Joseph Schauenburg And The Deaths Of Several Arab Leaders Whom He Lured Into Negotiations.
