Per Wikipedia Edward Vermilye Huntington 1874 -1952 Was An American Mathematician. He Spent His Entire Career At Harvard Retiring In 1941. He Taught In The Engineering School Becoming Professor Of Mechanics In 1919. Although Huntington's Research Was Mainly In Pure Mathematics He Valued Teaching Mathematics To Engineering Students. He Advocated Mechanical Calculators And Had One In His Office. He Had An Interest In Statistics Unusual For The Time And Worked On Statistical Problems For The Usa Military During World War I. Huntington's Primary Research Interest Was The Foundations Of Mathematics. He Was One Of The "American Postulate Theorists" According To Michael Scanlan The Expression Is Due To John Corcoran American Mathematicians Active Early In The 20Th Century Including E. H. Moore And Oswald Veblen Who Proposed Axiom Sets For A Variety Of Mathematical Systems. In So Doing They Helped Found What Is Now Known As Metamathematics And Model Theory. Huntington Was Perhaps The Most Prolific Of The American Postulate Theorists Devising Sets Of Axioms Which He Called "Postulates" For Groups Abelian Groups Geometry The Real Number Field And Complex Numbers. His 1917 Book The Continuum And Other Types Of Serial Order Was In Its Day ".A Widely Read Introduction To Cantorian Set Theory" Scanlan 1999. Yet Huntington And The Other American Postulate Theorists Played No Role In The Rise Of Axiomatic Set Theory Then Taking Place In Continental Europe. In 1904 Huntington Put Boolean Algebra On A Sound Axiomatic Foundation. He Revisited Boolean Axiomatics In 1933 Proving That Boolean Algebra Required But A Single Binary Operation Denoted Below By Infix '' That Commutes And Associates And A Single Unary Operation Complementation Denoted By A Postfix Prime. The Only Further Axiom Boolean Algebra Requires Is Now Known As Huntington's Axiom. Revising A Method From Joseph Adna Hill Huntington Is Credited With The Method Of Equal Proportions Or Huntington-Hill Method Of Apportionment Of Seats In The U.S. House Of Representatives To The States As A Function Of Their Populations Determined In The U.S. Census1. This Mathematical Algorithm Has Been Used In The U.S. Since 1941 And Is Currently The Method Used. In 1880 Starr Began Lecturing On The Diseases Of Children In The University Of Pennsylvania Medical School And In 1884 When Penn Created The Position Of Clinical Professor Of Diseases Of Children Starr Became Penn'S First Professor Of Pediatrics. This Development Was Part Of The Separation Of The Old Field Of Midwifery Into Three Separate Professorships: Obstetrics Gynecology And Pediatrics. Starr Gave Up His Chair At The Age Of 41 Supposedly Because The Wards Of The Hospital Of The University Of Pennsylvania Did Not Provide Facilities For Children Thus Making It Very Difficult For Him To Include Practical Demonstrations In His Teaching. After Leaving Penn'S Medical School Starr Continued His Private Practice While Also Writing And Lecturing On Pediatrics. Starr Was The Author Of Various Medical Works Including Diseases Of Digestive System In Children Hygiene Of The Nursery And The Adolescent Period. He Also Served As The American Editor Of Goodheart'S Diseases Of Children. Starr Was A Member Of Many Medical Societies Including The American Pediatric Society The Philadelphia College Of Physicians And The Association Of American Physicians. <br/> <br/> W. B. He Then Became An Assistant To Lorentz And Went In 1909 As A Lecturer In Physics At The University Of Groningen Which Task He Began On April 29 1909 With The Introductory Lecture De Rol Der Wiskunde In De Mathematic Physica German: The Role Of Mathematics In Mathematical Physics . In 1914 He Succeeded Peter Debye As Professor Of Physics At Utrecht University . As Head Of The Physics Laboratory In Utrecht From 1922 He Also Turned His Attention To Experimental Investigations In Particular Intensity Measurements Of Spectral Lines And Thus Gave The Institute An International Reputation. In 1921 He Was Significantly Involved With The Head Of The Philips Natuurständig Laboratorium In Eindhoven Gilles Holst In The Founding Of The Dutch Physical Society Nederlandse Natuurständige Vereniging Of Which He Was Chairman In 1939/1940. In 1931/32 He Was Rector Of The University Of Utrecht For Which He Gave The Rectorate's Speech In 1932 De Beteekenis Der Natuurkunde Voor Cultuur En Maatschappij German: The Importance Of Physics For Culture And Society . Ornstein Became A Member Of The Royal Netherlands Academy Of Sciences Corresponding Honorary Member Of The Royal Physiographic Society In Lund And Knight Of The Order Of The Dutch Lion. After The German Occupation In 1940 As A Jew Who Was Also Active In The Zionist Movement He Was Chairman Of The Dutch Zionist Association From 1918 To 1922 He Was In Great Danger But Refused To Leave The Country Despite Offers From Friends. Like All Jews In The Netherlands He Was Removed From Public Office And Was Not Even Allowed To Enter His Laboratory In Utrecht. Ornstein Then Isolated Himself From The Public And Died A Little Later. His Body Was Buried On May 23 1941 At The Jewish Cemetery In Utrecht. Ornstein Is Best Known For His Work In Statistical Mechanics. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Process Ornstein Uhlenbeck On The Theory Of Brownian Motion Physical Review Vol. 36 1930 P. 823 Is Named After Him And George Uhlenbeck . BurgersThe First Of Ehrenfest's Students In Leiden To Complete A Phd Thesis 1918 Wrote His Dissertation On The Rutherford-Bohr Model Of The Atom Completingehrenfest's Work On The Connection Between The Bohr-Sommerfeld Quantization Rules And The Adiabatic Invariants Of Classical Mechanics. Later While At Delft Burgers Quickly Became One Of The World's Leading Authorities On Fluid Dynamics. His First Work Was Devoted To Oseen's Theory Of Flow At Low Reynolds Numbers And Its Connection With Ludwig Prandtl's Work On Airfoils. In 1921 He Met Theodore Von Karman With Whom He Had A Long And Close Professional And Personal Association That Stimulated His Work On Turbulence. In This Field He Was A Pioneer In Using The Hot Wire Anemometer To Probe Velocity Fluctuations In Turbulent Flows. His Work On The Theory Of Turbulence Was Devoted In Large Part To Developing A Statistical Theory Of Turbulence And To Treating Theoretical Models Of Turbulent Flow. In This Connection He Studied What Has Now Become Known As The Burgers Equation Which Is A One-Dimensional Nonlinear Partial Differential Equation Similar In Structure To The Navier-Stokes Equation For The Hydrodynamic Velocity Field. Burgers Collaborated With His Brother In Work On Dislocation In Crystal Lattices; In 1939 He Introduced The Burgers Vector Which Is A Measure Of The Strength Of A Dislocation In A Lattice. He Also Studied The Fluid Dynamics Of Dilute Polymer Solutions And Wrote Some Of The Fundamental Papers On The Intrinsic Viscosity Of Suspensions. This Work Like That On Turbulence And On Dislocations Provided The Foundation For Much Of The Recent Work On This Topic. In 1955 At Age 60 Burgers Left Delft To Join The Faculty Of The University Of Maryland. Although He Spent Much Of His Professional Life In Industry Hendrik Casimir Was One Of The Great Dutch Theoretical Physicists. Casimir Made Many Contributions To Science During His Years In Research From 1931 To 1950. He Helped Found The European Physical Society And Became Its President From 1972 Till 1975. In 1979 He Was One Of The Key Speakers At Cern's 25Th Anniversary Celebrations. While At Natlab In 1948 Casimir Collaborating With Dirk Polder Predicted The Quantum Mechanical Attraction Between Conducting Plates Now Known As The Casimir Effect Which Has Important Consequences. Small Stamp Of The World Human Culture Foundation Mckay College Los Angeles Near Bottom Of Title Page No Other Marks Or Damage. Writer Educator And Literary Critic Denton Jacques Snider 1841-1925 Was One Of The Original Members Of The St. Louis Philosophical Society An Association Of Hegelians Founded In 1866 By William Torrey Harris And Henry C. Brockmeyer Whom Snider Met While Teaching In The St. Louis Schools. With His Knowledge Of Greek Latin French German And Italian Snider Brought A Love Of Literature A Fine Critical Sensibility And A Breadth Of Outlook To The St. Louis Group. He Spent Some Time Teaching Classics In Susan Blow's Kindergarten Training School. An Acrimonious Parting Of The Ways Resulted From Blow's Disapproval Of His Independence And Enthusiasm For Pagan Cultures. From 1884-97 Snider Wrote And Lectured Touring Extensively Mainly In The Midwest Including Speeches To The Grand Rapids Kindergarten Training School. According To The Dictionary Of American Biography Snider Would Move "Impetuously About The Stage Checking His Flow Of Eloquence Only To Chide Severely The Late-Comers." To Avoid The Commercialization Of His Work He Published His Writings Himself At His Own Expense Under The Imprint Of His Sigma Publishing Company. He Made Little If Any Money From The More Than Forty Volumes He Published And Often Gave Away Copies To People Attending His Lectures Who Wanted To Read Them. Snider's Earlier Works Many Of Them In Verse Deal With Greece And Rome A Walk In Hellas Homer In Chios Prorsus Retrorsus Agamemnon's Daughter. Between 1877 And 1897 He Produced Nine Volumes Of Commentary On "The Four Literary Bibles Of The Occident"-Shakespeare's Plays Goethe's Faust Homer's Works And Dante's Divine Comedy. Later He Embarked On An Ambitious Series Of Volumes Intended To Comprise A Grand Philosophic Or "Psychologic" System Which Included Works On History Science Psychology And Political Philosophy. Snider Also Wrote Poetry And Two Autobiographical Works A Writer Of Books In His Genesis 1910 And The St. Louis Movement In Philosophy Literature Education Psychology With Chapters Of Autobiography 1920. <br/> <br/> (Denton J Snider) hardcover
