Se Wikipedia: Edward Mcknight Kauffer 1890 -1954 Was An American Artist And Graphic Designer Who Lived For Much Of His Life In The United Kingdom. He Worked Mainly In Poster Art But Was Also Active As A Painter Book Illustrator And Theatre Designer. Edward Leland Kauffer Was Born On 14 December 1890 In Great Falls Montana. By 1910 He Had Moved To San Francisco Working As A Bookseller And Studying Art At The California School Of Design From 1910 To 1912. At Around This Time Professor Joseph Mcknight Of The University Of Utah Became Aware Of Kauffer's Work Sponsored Him And Paid To Send Him To Paris For Further Study. In Gratitude Kauffer Took His Sponsor's Name As A Middle Name. Kauffer Stopped In Chicago For Six Months In 1912/1913 And Studied At The Art Institute Of Chicago. While There He Witnessed The Armory Show One Of The First Major Exhibitions To Introduce The Styles Of Modernism To American Viewers. This Likely Had A Major Impact On Kauffer Who Would Work In Many Of The Same Styles Throughout His Career. He Arrived In Paris In 1913 And Studied At The Académie Moderne Until 1914. In Paris In 1923 He Met The Textile Designer Marion Dorn 1896-1964 And Subsequently Lived With Her In London From Late 1923 To July 1940. They Married In 1950 And Moved To New York Until His Death In 1954. Kauffer Moved To London Upon The Start Of The First World War And Remained There For Most Of His Career. He Was Briefly Associated With Robert Bevan's Cumberland Market Group And Had A One-Man Show At The Omega Workshops. In Brighton On The South Coast He Designed A "Novel" Mural For The Lobby Of Embassy Court A Modernist Block Of Flats Designed By Wells Coates In 1935. The Mural Consisted Of "Monochrome Photographs . Printed Directly On To A Light-Sensitive Cellulose Coating". Kauffer May Be Best Known For The 140 Posters That He Produced For London Underground And Later London Transport. The Posters Span Many Styles: Many Show Abstract Influences Including Futurism Cubism And Vorticism; Others Evoke Impressionist Influences Such As Japanese Woodcuts. He Created Posters For Shell Oil The Great Western Railway And Other Commercial Clients And Also Illustrated Books And Book Covers. Later He Also Became Interested In Textiles Interior Design And Theatrical Design. He Returned To New York City In 1940 At The Beginning Of The Second World War And Tried To Find Work In Advertising. He Struggled In The More Competitive Atmosphere Until He Was Approached To Do A Series Of Posters For American Airlines In 1947. ‎Broadside advertisement for an antiquarian book fair in Tokyo‎

‎Tokyo 1949. Broadside approx. 21" x 15" with black and brown text in Japanese. An advertisement for an antiquarian book fair held February 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Matsuzakaya Department Store in Ueno Tokyo. Sale was stated to feature rare Meiji and Taisho signed books poetry first editions manuscripts and other literature from private collections. Includes a list of participating bookstores: Matsuzakaya Kobunsho Kinouchi Shoten Shinsheido Hakurinsha Inoue Shoten Isseido Jidai-ya and Genseido. Event was organized by the Meiji Koten-kai Meiji Classical Association which was founded in 1947. This association held books fairs in March and December 1947 and in February 1949. Broadside has pinholes in the corners previous folds and a few chips along the edge with minor loss no loss of letterpress. Overall text is bright and clean. Very good. This fair predates the earliest American antiquarian book fair by at least ten years. In England the first ABA fair was held in 1958. unknown‎

‎London: Longman Rees Orme Brown Green and Longman 1835. 12mo 7 volumes volumes 1-3 second edition the rest first; title pages printed in red and black with a geometric motif central; errata slip tipped-in in volume 6 color frontispiece in vol. 7; contemporary red morocco gilt for Toovey bookseller 177 Piccadilly with gilt-decorated spines in 6 compartments gilt-lettered direct in 2 double gilt borders enclosing a geometric motif in gilt on upper covers repeating that on the title pages; joints and corners scuffed and rubbed neat manuscript index in pencil on the back flyleaf of most volumes volume 2 with front cover neatly reattached; all else generally very good and sound. The Doctor was the anonymous project of Robert Southey intended to be a meandering experimental and possibly intentionally incomplete work in which a story about the "Doctor Daniel Dove of Doncaster and his horse Nobs" is promised to the reader but after seven volumes never begins. Southey died while still working on it and the final two volumes were published posthumously at which point his authorship was finally acknowledged. The Doctor is a quintessential shaggy dog story with every short chapter barely associated with the next if at all but the work as a whole is now mostly known as the place in which the story of "The Three Bears" was first printed. Goldilocks was not added to the story until sometime later. The Osborne Collection notes a manuscript of the story from 1831 with illustrations by Elanore Mure as the earliest extant version. Of The Doctor it notes: "Both Joseph Jacobs and F. J. Harvey Darton have attributed the authorship of the story to Robert Southey who included it in volume 4 of The Doctor published in 1837 six years after this manuscript was made." Illustrated with 3 photographs of Dr. Joseph Broadman a physician in his library of 500000 documents newspapers newspaper clippings periodicals pamphlets leaflets books cartoons pictures posters official reports etc. Broadman published this pamphlet in an unsuccessful effort to place the collection in a university library. In 1966 he gave the collection to a newly established Quaker institution on Long Island Friends World College. In 1990 FWC was sold to a new owner who tore down the buildings a few years later and "the collection passed into oblivion." Zabriskie with his armorial bookplate on upper pastedown gilt decorated spine in five compartments gilt-decorated dentelles marbled endpapers; boards rubbed and bumped title page chipped losing the "V" in vocabulary with contemporary inscription moderate foxing good and sound. A dictionary in the "hard words" tradition omitting "the common words of the language" and designed for the use of "young ladies and gentlemen too who have not had the advantage of a liberal or learned education" Preface. Halkett & Laing Kennedy and Alston attribute the work to Baskerville himself - an attribution of which I've always been dubious. In the noted dictionary collector Tom Rodger's copy of Alston he attributes it to Joseph Priestley. George A. Zabriskie was an antiquarian of many talents and in addition to being a successful businessman collector Grolier Club member was a prolific and capable amateur binder.
