Collection of gift books with fringe bindings
Various 1885. A collection of approximately 80 gift books and gift cards with fringe bindings bound in paper wrappers with chromolithograph images many over gilt backgrounds the majority of them very good with occasional condition issues including worn fringe a few with water stains and chipping and loss to spines. The collection includes approximately 36 books i. e. more than 4 pages. Many with original printed paper folders and one in the original clamshell box. Accompanied by an assortment of 45 fringed cards for holidays birthdays and for mourning. A few titles duplicated but under different imprints. The use of silk fringe in the binding of gift books was a short-lived fad at the end of the 19th century. This collection serves as an excellent survey of this publishing phenomenon. The Ampersand Club has a long tradition of providing letterpress invitations to its events which occur more-or-less monthly September through April and concluding with an annual dinner meeting in May. Tradition holds that printers print anonymously so the names of presses and printers are not included in the invitation copy. Over the years Gallo has printed no fewer than 50 a dozen or so are included here. In his notes for his own Hermetic Press archive Gallo notes: "The invitations tend toward the decorative this most particularly with the early ones when there was a camaraderie of competitiveness among the printers: Gerald Lange Michael Tarachow Norm Fritzberg Allan Kornblum and Gaylord Schanilec. Consequently these invitations display a wide range of handset foundry typefaces designed not only to be sparkling works but to spark typographic conversations." While this collection is a long way from being complete and many as yet undetermined as to printer or press this offering of 125 is by far the largest group of such invitations ever to come on the market. Edward Hitchcock President of Amherst and Christopher Morgan N.Y. Secretary of State and U.S. Representative from N.Y. New York: Edward Walker & Sons n.d. 1861. Illustrated broadside approx. 17" x 15" not examined out of old frame; generally very good with no folds or breaks. The New York Book Bindery was established by Edward Walker in 1836. This advertisement was printed after the original building burned down in 1852 and announced the opening of the new larger building at the same location. Herman Melville apparently worked on the final chapters of Moby Dick and proofread the sheets in third floor rooms in the adjacent building where the fire started. Both the AAS and Delaware have examples of other New York Book-Bindery broadsides both ostensibly dated 1852: that at AAS measures 25 x 19 cm; and the Delaware copy measures 38 x 23 cm. Early ownership signature of Evelyn Pitcher. Issued in Pinnock's Catechisms series ads for which on pastedowns and back cover. The book appeared under three separate imprints in 1824 of which this appears to the rarest - only Columbia in OCLC. In this edition the title varies considerably: the printed title reads as above; the engraved title reads "lives of illustrious characters of antiquity; and the wrapper title reads "lives of eminent men of all ages and countries. printed for G. and W. B. Whittaker unknown
