For 40 Years He Worked Closely With Nelle Richmond Eberhart Who Wrote Most Of The Texts To His Songs Including Four American Indian Songs. She Also Wrote The Librettos For His Five Operas Two Of Which Were Based On Indian Themes. He Composed In A Wide Variety Of Genres. He Was Greatly Influenced By American Indian Music Which He Had Been Studying Especially Through The Work Of Ethnologists Alice Fletcher And Francis La Flesche. Fletcher And La Flesche Had Studied The Omaha Tribe And Recorded Their Music And Stories. Having Published Several Articles On American Indian Music Cadman Became Regarded As One Of The Foremost Experts On The Subject. In 1908 He Began Touring To Present Lectures Known As The "Indian Talk" Or "Indian Music Tour" Accompanied By The Performance Of Native American Music And His Own Compositions. Tsianina Redfeather Muscogee / Cherokee Billed As "Princess Redfeather" Performed As A Singer On Some Of His Tours. Her Signature Song Was Cadman's "From The Land Of The Sky-Blue Water". Another Such Song Was "At Dawning" Which Became Widely Known In The 1920S. Cadman Toured Both The Us And Europe For 25 Years To Present This Lecture. Cadman Drew From Omaha And Iroquois Songs For His Four American Indian Songs Op. 45 Which Became His First Commercial Success In 1909. This Was Aided By Performances Of These Songs By Noted Soprano Lillian Nordica Who Was On A Concert Tour. In The Summer Of 1909 He Went To Nebraska To Study The Music And Traditional Instruments Of The Omaha And Winnebago Tribes. He Lived With The People On Their Reservations Learning To Play Their Instruments. During His Trip To The West He Met Francis La Flesche An Omaha Ethnologist Who Was Working With The Smithsonian Institution On Studies Of The Omaha And Osage Peoples. Cadman Assisted Him In Making Recordings On Wax Cylinders Of Traditional Songs. These Works Are Now Held By The Library Of Congress And Some 60 Songs Are Available Online. Cadman Drew From La Flesche's Recordings And He Was Also Interested In His Stories Collected From These Peoples. They Began Work That Year On An Opera; Cadman Had Already Started To Pull Melodies From Three Printed Collections Of Omaha And Pawnee Music Published By Ethnologist Alice Cunningham Fletcher Who Also Was With The Smithsonian. The Songs Were Transcribed Or Harmonized By Others. Cadman And Eberhart Worked Closely With La Flesche By Mail And He Continued To Provide Cadman With Omaha Melodies For The Opera. They Were Not Permitted To Use Melodies Which La Flesche Had Collected For An As Yet Unpublished Report For The Smithsonian. Together With Librettist Nelle Richmond Eberhart Cadman And La Flesche Worked Together For About Three More Years To Create An Opera Based On Omaha Stories And Music. Cadman Made Occasional Indian Music Tours To Raise Money For The Project. He Moved To Denver In 1911. Cadman Completed The Music For Da O Ma 1912 And Sought A Venue For It But It Was Never Produced Or Published. It Was Rejected By The Boston Opera Company The White-Smith Music Publishing Company Which Had Published Numerous Songs By Cadman; And The Metropolitan Opera. In The Course Of Their Work The Team Had Changed The Opera From An Omaha To Sioux Lakota/Dakota Setting. Hugh Heffner's Playboy empire ventured into the world of mail-order book clubs in 1972 with a focus on books that catered to a male audience. The last Playboy club closed in 1988 and the Book Club's end appears to be unknown but likely ended much earlier if not in 1975. RARE no issues in current online market OCLC locates only the Beinecke Library at Yale with a single issue in their Roger Jackson Collection of Henry Miller Materials. His hand-painted and gilded book covers in imitation of fifteenth-century tavolette di Biccherna book covers are today widely collected and treasured for their beauty and skill. 12 1/2" h x 10 1/2" w with embossed leather spine Very Good wear and some tearing to leather boards appropriately distressed with some chipping at raised boarders. The front panel features the famous image of Dante with a book in hand and bears the painted title "Dantes". The rear panel bears a painted emblem. A set of data sheets detailing high water levels during the March 25-26 1913 Great Flood on the Cleveland to Indianapolis Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Includes seventeen brad-bound sheets of translucent vellum architectural drawing paper. The data points include 'Structure Number of Locality' 'Kind of Structure' 'Distance of High Water below B/R on N. Side' 'Distance of High Water below B/R on S. Side' 'Distance of Clearance Line to B/R' 'Direction of Flow' and a final space for Remarks. Printed in black one correction in pencil noted. Overall condition Very Good with wrinkling and some small corner creases. Likely used in day to day railroad operation. Each sheet is 9 ¼ in. x 14 ¼ in. Housed in a plain manilla folder titled in red marker and blue ink "1913 Flood Levels" and Indianapolis Belt Railroad". Called "The Great Flood" for good reason this disaster's flood-related deaths in Ohio Indiana and eleven other states are estimated at 650. The official death toll range for Ohio falls between 422 and 470. Flood-related death estimates in Indiana range from 100 to 200. More than a quarter million people were left homeless. She Is Best Known As The "Founding Mother Of Recursion Theory". Initially Péter Began Her Graduate Research On Number Theory. Upon Discovering That Her Results Had Already Been Proven By The Work Of Robert Carmichael And L. E. Dickson She Abandoned Mathematics To Focus On Poetry. However She Was Convinced To Return To Mathematics By Her Friend László Kalmár Who Suggested She Research The Work Of Kurt Gödel On The Theory Of Incompleteness. She Prepared Her Own Different Proofs To Gödel's Work. Péter Presented The Results Of Her Paper On Recursive Theory "Rekursive Funktionen" To The International Congress Of Mathematicians In Zurich Switzerland In 1932. After The Passage Of The Jewish Laws Of 1939 In Hungary Péter Was Forbidden To Teach Because Of Her Jewish Origin And Was Briefly Confined To A Ghetto In Budapest. During World War Ii She Wrote Her Book Playing With Infinity: Mathematical Explorations And Excursions A Work For Lay Readers On The Topics Of Number Theory And Logic. In 1952 She Was The First Hungarian Woman To Be Made An Academic Doctor Of Mathematics. After The College Closed In 1955 She Taught At Eötvös Loránd University Until Her Retirement In 1975. She Was A Popular Professor Known As "Aunt Rózsa" To Her Students. In 1951 She Published Her Key Work Recursive Functions Rekursive Funtionen. She Continued To Publish Important Papers On Recursive Theory Throughout Her Life. Beginning In The Mid-1950S Péter Applied Recursive Function Theory To Computers. Her Final Book Published In 1976 Was Recursive Functions In Computer Theory. Originally Published In Hungarian It Was The Second Hungarian Mathematical Book To Be Published In The Soviet Union Because Its Subject Matter Was Considered Indispensable To The Theory Of Computers. It Was Translated Into English In 1981. Péter Was Awarded The Kossuth Prize In 1951. Single sheet printed double sided folded into 8 panels title image printed in blue and red shows a romantic scene across the river to the Bund with traditional Chinese craft and a modern ship in the foreground. Browning occasional light marks creasing and wear but overall a good copy of a scarce piece of Shanghai ephemera. Text in Japanese. Tourist brochure published by the Japanese inn Hinomaru Ryokan in Shanghai in the mid-1930s. The brochure is undated but it appears to have been published sometime after the First Shanghai Incident in 1932. Hinomaru Ryokan was named in honour of the Japanese national flag which was and is commonly called Hinomaru in Japanese. <br> <br>This interesting piece of Japanese Shanghai ephemera provides an outline of Shanghai and its Japanese community at a time when the Japanese residents numbered about 29000. The inn promotes its convenient location within the Japanese community and reassures visitors that the Hinomaru Ryokan is a safe place to stay given is close proximity to approximately 2000 Japanese troops stationed at the Marine's quarters at the ready to protect the residents. It also advertises the free tours of the area it runs and states it is a designated place of accommodation by the Japanese Consulate South Manchurian Railways Manchukuo embassy and the Japanese Tourist Bureau. Additionally the brochure lists the primary sights to be seen in Shanghai Suzhou and Hangzhou a 6-day sightseeing tour plan and train shipping and air schedules and prices. . 日の丸旅館. Torahiko Kori 1890-1924 Left Tokyo University Without Graduating To Join The Editorial Staff Of Shirakaba A Literary Magazine In 1909. Early In His Short Literary Career Kori Torahiko Became An Enfant Terrible Of The Shirakaba School A Group Of Writers And Artists Whose Works Reflected The Liberal Democratic And Humanistic Spirit Of The Taisho Era 1912-1926. At The Age Of Twenty Kori Began Editing And Publishing With Yanagi Muneyoshi Soetsu Founder Of The Mingei Movement And Around 1923 Became A Frequent Contributor To The Major Literary Magazines Of The Day. In 1909 Kori Torahiko Won First Prize In The Contest Held By Taiyo Sun Magazine With His Play Titled "The Matsuyama Family" Which Brought Him Into Prominence As A Promising Dramatist. His Fame Was Established When The Imperial Theatre Staged His Play Dojoji 1912. The Following Year He Left For Europe. At London Kori Met Esther Sainsbury The Poetess And They Remained Friends Till His Death. He Wrote Plays In London; His First Drama To Be Staged There Was "Kanawa" Iron Ring 1917. Another Of His Plays "Toils Of Yoshitomo" Ran For Three Weeks At The Little Theatre London. Other Plays Similarly Staged Were "Saul And David" And "Absalom." "The Toils Of Yoshitomo" Was Translated Into Several European Languages Including German French And Italian. He Was One Of The Few Japanese Writers Who Worked Abroad. Despite His Close Association With The Shirakaba School Kori In His Taste For Romantic And Decadent Literature Was At Odds With The Prevailing Shirakaba Partiality For Realist Literature Particularly That Of Tolstoy. In His Mature Prose Style Kori Also Turned Away From The Shirakaba Writers' Tendency To Sinewy Colloquialism And Airy Realism In Favour Of A More Flowery Convoluted Prose Style À La D'Annunzio Or Walter Pater. An Unattributed Evaluation States " In Japan One Lone Voice Persisted In Hailing The Greatness Of Kori Long After His Early Death. Mishima Yukio Saw In Kori'S Plays The Essence Of Tragedy. Mishima Rated Kori As The Natural Successor To Such Classic Japanese Tragedians As Zeami Chikamatsu And Mori Ogai. Mishima'S Modern Noh Plays Was Written In Implicit Homage To Kori And Stands Today As A Continuation Of Many Of The Themes That Kori Reworked So Successfully In His Dramas. Shiga Naoya Concluded His Reminiscence Of Kori With His Regret That He Had Let Kori Go To England. "Kori Should Have Stayed And Worked In Japan. If He Had He Might Not Have Died So Young.'
