Newport England: The Ceramic Book Company 1957. First Edition . Cloth. Good/No Jacket. SIGNED and inscribed by the author. Limited edition of 1000 copies. "With ten colour plates and over two hundred monochrome illustrations." This book is handsomely printed on fine paper and illustrated with beautiful truly charming teapots from a collector's collector. The interior is perfectly preserved with fresh colored plates. The binding is tight and sound and covers are bound in a silky smooth cloth that has retained its fine texture. Very slight wear to extremities. Spine is a bit faded but embossed gilt remains bright and sharp. Top page ends have nice sharp gilt edging. The main flaw is cosmetic: there are some splashes and a line of spotting on the front which are a few shades darker than the original from a dampstain but not soiling. The rear also has an area of lines and a splashy splotch with four white spots each about 1/2 ". The cloth near the back spine seems to have stretched so it's a little loose there but only the cloth and not anything to do with the actual binding. There is some vague spottiness on the lower front that could be fingerprint marks and a line of light staining on bottom ends. The back hinge is intact with a small half-tear of about 1/4". Name label on endpage and half-title. Old bookstore label on pastedown. Saffron covers are still quite attractively bright but with all-over smudgy soiling lightly on the front and a shade more on the rear and a darkening to spine. Red lettering to spine has faded. Matching saffron dye on top ends has a few scrapes but color is still strong. Crisp red design of the dowager Empress on the front. Tattering to spine ends and corner tips are worn through to the boards. A copy with flaws but a scarce and uniquely told story from contemporary accounts. Gilting to spine with fine horse head with flowing mane also fresh and sharp. Endpages with a few light foxing spots but except for some mild spots on the first pages the rest are clean. Binding paper at front hinge has torn down to webbing for about 1". This is the paper that's torn not a crack in the hinge. The covers are a fresh strong blue with a silky smooth texture. Covers have a sprinkling of light white marks and spots please see photos. Upper spine has a 1/4" tear spine edge has a tiny chip to the fabric and there is faded area on lower spine panel as if from a label book is not ex-libris. London England Britain UK 1852. On offer is the extraordinary Last Will and Testament of Prince Albert Prince Consort and husband of Queen Victoria. This is a document of historical significance. In beautiful mixed gothic and roman cursive it states "This is the last Will and Testament of me Prince Albert of Saxe Cobourg and Gotha. I hereby revoke all Wills and codicils made by me at any time heretofore. I give devise and bequeath unto my dearly beloved Consort Her Majesty Queen Victoria All my real and personal estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever to hold to Her said Majesty Her Heirs Executors and Administrators according to the respective natures tenures and qualities thereof and I constitute and appoint Her said Majesty Sole Executrix of this my Will. In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand this heavenly fourth day of August 1852. Signed Albert" Under this main passage is the witness statement by "C.B. Phipps Keeper of Her Majesty's Privy Purse" and "Edward White G. Marlborough St. London Solicitor". The witness statement reads "Signed and Declared by Prince Albert the Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us both being present at the the same time who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereto subscribed our Names Witnesses." This is as stated an official copy. Prince Albert died in 1851 and shortly after his death this copy of the Last Will and Testament was inspected for authenticity. This is stated at the bottom of the sheet: "The Writing contained in this sheet of Paper is a true copy of the Original having been carefully examined therewith the 20th day of March 1862 By us. John Harks. Thomas Balten Clerks to Messrs. White Broughton & White 12 Great Marlborough Street London Solrs." The back of the sheet says the same thing. "Attested Copy Will of His Royal Highness the Prince Consort" and is dated "24th August 1852". The will contains an official "One Shilling" stamp impression as well as a circular ink impression that reads "London 20.9.61" and contains a small detailed crown. Albert was born in the Saxon duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and at the age of 20 married his first cousin Queen Victoria. The Queen eventually came to depend very heavily on his support and guidance. He aided the development of Britain's constitutional monarchy by persuading his wife to be less partisan in her dealings with Parliament Albert died at the young age of 42 plunging the Queen into deep mourning. Uncut deckled edges. Colophon and the smaller rectangular printer's device designed by Morris no. 1. viii 384 1 colophon vii pp.</p><p>Printed in black with shoulder notes and chapter heads in red in the Golden type designed by Morris for his press. Woodcut frontispiece title within a floral border and facing page with full woodcut floral page-border borders 10a and 10. Numerous 10- 7- 6- and 4-line woodblock initial capitals all designed by Morris engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.</p><p>Keats -- especially his "La Belle Dame sans Merci" -- was an icon of the Pre-Raphaelites and how deeply Morris felt about the publication of this book is illustrated by his reaction when he discovered some initial mistakes in the text of "La Belle Dame sans Merci." According to Sidney Colvin in his John Keats 1918 p. 470: "I was with him when he happened to open the sheet on which La Belle Dame sans Merci was printed. He began to read it and was suddenly aware of unfamiliar words. Great was his indignation. He swiftly altered the words and then read the poem to me remarking that it was the germ from which all the poetry of his group had sprung -- The sheet was reprinted and the earlier and better version restored."</p><p>Dated March 7 issued May 8 1894. "This is now Jan. 1898 the most sought after of all the smaller Kelmscott Press books. It was announced as in preparation in the lists of May 27 and August 11893 and as in the press in that of March 31 1894 when the woodcut title still remained to be printed."
