Very Good. 1923. On offer is a super manuscript relic of one man's life spent in the Royal Navy serving in submarines for 22 years. Titled 'SHUT OFF FROM DIVING 1923-1945 The Ramblings of a Plumber' the book was written by British Warrant Engineer Leslie Honeywill who was a Chief Engine Room Artificer CERA or a plumber as he jokingly called himself on a number of submarines. Leslie writes in his intro: 'The material used in this story has been extracted from diaries written during the period covered. It is thus chronological and consequently rather disjointed in its presentation. It will have little interest except to submariners and probably not a lot for those who are or were. It contains no excitements but is an attempt to portray how one submariner enjoyed life met and overcame problems enjoyed the companionship of some wonderful friends - if the contents are mainly connected with the engine room department that of course was my particular concern but we were a team from the youngest seaman to the CO and no one could have wished for a more satisfying life.' The 463 page book on large typed paper is overall VG. 1936 ORIGINAL DEPRESSION ERA LAKE OF MEADOWS PENNSYLVANIA MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A WOMAN WHO STARTS THE YEAR UNDER THE PRESSURE OF A FATHER IN THE HOSPITAL AND THEN HIS DEATH
LAKE OF MEADOWS PENNSYLVANIA BINGHAMPTON NEW YORK. Very Good. 1936. On offer is an interesting original Depression era manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified woman who lives in or near the Lake of Meadows Pennsylvania area but she does write quite a bit about going to Binghamton New York. There are many many clues as to her identity which local historians and collectors should assuredly be able to confirm. It also appears that her family owns a group of cottages on the Lake and rents them out in the summer. The diary has a few entries for 1935 all of 1936 save for 16 days and there are 3 entries for 1937. At the outset we learn that her father is heading in for surgery. After some ups and downs we learn that on February 20th 1936 he dies from heart failure. After that she spends much of her time working on the cottages traveling to Canada for vacations and then in the fall having to repair one or several of the cottages as they had a fire. Plus they get a good deal of property damage during the big flood of 1936 and many of the entries are about this event. Though the diary is a small pocket size diary measuring about 2 ¾" x 5 ½" her writing is small and she paints a super picture of her life and times. "February 16th Took Grace and Laura May with us when we went out home. Girls rode down hill. Papa gradually loosing." "February 20th Papa died at 11 o'clock tonight. Heart failed. Mr. Ryan took me out. Walked up the glen. Called power of attorney. Left at 3 o'clock. Roads very dangerous." "February 23rd Wilson and several called. Flowers begin to come. Uncle Stewart and Stanley took cement to cemetery. Stanley got cement of Raymond. Leon took Uncle Stewart Helen mama and I to Athens to see papa at the undertaking rooms." The next several days are about the funeral "March 11th & 12th Leon and I went to Lake of Meadows to see about cottages. Snow banks still quite high around Warren Center. Water over roads

1885 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL OF 19TH CENTURY 'ECLECTIC MEDICAL' EDUCATION USING MANY OF THE FORBIDDEN AND DANGEROUS DRUGS OF TODAY
CINCINNATI CINCINATTA OHIO. Very Good. 1885. On offer is a super very interesting manuscript relic of 19th Century medical and pharmacological knowledge treatment and procedure being a 200 page large 12 x 7.5 inch notebook handwritten by G.R. Hill in 1885 while he was a student at the Eclectic Medical Institute in Cincinnati. The book is an incredible snapshot of medical science before the age of aspirin penicillin and other game changers. We note that in some cases the cures appear worse than the diseases. There is an examination section at the end where presumably you answered and were then given a medical license. There is also a section on "Civil Malpractice" dated 1885 given by one 'Professor Christian' that goes into the patient being able to recoup monies for remedies gone wrong. HISTORICAL NOTES: The Institute was part of the 'Eclectic Movement' in medicine focusing on herbal and other curatives to relieve the pain and discomfort of symptoms and at the time considered an radical and progressive alternative in an era where bleeding and purging patients was still the norm. Graduating and becoming Dr G R Hill he practiced in Chicago and in Kendall Wisconsin. He then contributed to various Eclectic Medical Journals through the early 1900s. The Eclectic Medical Institute began in the 1840s and by the 1880s was at its peak. Many prominent doctors taught there and what this notebook contains is nothing short of the entire course curriculum for the college including the professors and their departments the curriculum for each department the body's diseases and their cures and many many RX's using different herbs and substances many derived from ancient origins especially from the Chinese. Let us remember that this was before the use even of aspirin so this is the dark ages indeed for medicine. The notes in here go into Venereal Diseases like Syphilis and Gonorrhoea quite a bit. It was taught by Professor H K Whitford. Of course fevers respiratory diseases and other internal diseases are mentioned also. We note with fascination that many treatments include what are today considered illegal or highly dangerous drugs: Cannabis Indices Cocaine Cantharides Spanish Fly opium Digitalis Cyanide acids galore and other potentially deadly "curatives". These are found at the back of this notebook which contains over 100 pages of herbal and other medicines all alphabetized their RX's and their uses. For instance Cannabis Americana and Cannabis Indices marijuana were at this time synthesized into a "resin and volatile oil." You were to take "1 to 5 M every 3 hours by resin or oil." It was used for "passive haemorrhage from uterus and cystitis; also gonorrhoea syphilis chronic celulitis profuse menstruation" and a cure for "Nymphomania!" One took Cannabis Indices for this 'disease' which was exhibited as "A hyperthesia of nerves that supply the sex organs." So it dilated the blood vessels and purportedly stopped the problem. In "excessive sexual intercourse" it goes on to state "or in excessive masturbation small dose of Cannabis Indices frequently repeated every 3 to 4 hours in 1/2 to 1 m dose." There are also cures in here for an opium habit and a cure for alcoholism which they thought "dilated the brain blood vessels." Cocaine Digitalis Spanish Fly and Cyanide are also used for symptoms of maladies which today are quite laughable. However many oils derived from flowers and plants in this compendium are still used today like Eucalyptus Oil Wintergreen various teas and other oils which you can buy anywhere today. 1907 EUROPEAN TRAVEL DIARY OF THE SON AND FAMILY OF FAMED CIVIL WAR SURGEON AND AUTHOR
OCEAN LINER 'MOLTKE' EUROPE. Very Good. 1907. On offer is an original 1907 handwritten travel diary representing 60 handwritten pages of a trip to Europe on board the ocean liner "Moltke". Research has determined the diary was written by 18 year old John Vance Lauderdale Jr. while on a trip with his mother his Aunt Mary and a Mr. Lane. The diary was originally purchased at the John Vance Lauderdale famed surgeon Civil War veteran and author - bio notes to follow - estate and written references buying a present for Marjorie his sister make the son most certainly author. There is also a mention of him while there in Europe and he writes about going to the "Brooklyn Daily Eagle" newspaper office while in Paris which appears that our author was purchasing a "hometown" paper to catch up on all the local news. 1907 "Tuesday 28 May At 11:35 a.m. on the above date the Moltke of the H.A.P. A. G. which means Hug all pretty American girls started with her handsome passengers for Naples. We passed Bay Ridge and saw for the last time in a good while the boat house of the C.A.C. There are many pretty girls aboard and although I have not met any yet I expect to. I was much surprised to see the course we took on going out. We kept straight out of the harbor as if we were going to Atlantic Highlands. When we got almost to Sandy Hook we turned at right angles and then went due east. It was not very long before I had been all on the ship from stem to stern. I got talking with all the stewards who could speak English and had quite a confab with the Macaroni man. Our stateroom although an inside one is all to the good. Sitting in the steamer chairs is to slow for me. At about 11:00 p.m. I went to bed and slept bum. The sea was very smooth." Wednesday 29th I awoke and found that I could not take my first salt water bath until 9:30. I fooled around until then and when the time came I was on hand. Gee it was fine. Played shuffle board and met the Morrel Girls. One of the steerage tried to jump overboard but was prevented. Sea was choppy." "Tuesday 12th At 8 o' we took carriages and drove to the station where we took electric tramways to the foot of Mt. Vesuvius. Then by taking a drive of 10 minutes we landed at Cooks Funicular RR. This took us to the laboratory of the observatory. As there was nothing to see more from the top of the crater than what we could see so we did not ascend. Had a very nice lunch at the hotel and came down the mountain at 12:35. Drove to the station and took a tram for Pompeii. Did Pompeii and saw the dead bodies coated with lava. Arrived home at 7:00 Had dinner

Leave for Florence tomorrow." Venice "Thursday 21st At 10:40 we left Florence for Venice. On the way to the station Mr. Lane had a fainting spell but soon got over it. We had the hottest filthiest ride on the train I ever had in my life. It most did me up. At 7:20 we reached Venice and were conveyed to our Hotel Rome in gondolas. I think they are fine. After dinner we took a walk to St. Mark's Square heard the band play and then took a gondola for an hour. There is a beautiful moon and I had the time of my life. Gosh how I wished for a nice looking girl. I would like to spend my days here with the right one." Milan Geneva Montreux Palace Hotel "Thursday 27th At the Montreux. Took a trolley ride and left on the 1:11 boat for Geneva. Stayed at the Montreux Palace Hotel which cost 7000 francs. Had beautiful rooms. The sail up Lake Geneva was superb. Arrived at Geneva at 4:30. Had a swim in the lake and enjoyed it very much. After dinner went to vaudeville and saw many new sights to bed at 12:30. At 5:00 in the afternoon had a swim." Bern Interlaken Lucerne Munich "July 7th Went to church not getting there until it was almost out being unable to find it. At noon saw the soldiers drill in front to the police. Beat our own soldiers to pieces. After lunch wrote some letters and went to a place called Volks Gardens. A young Coney Island. Saw how the Germans spend their Sundays
." Vienna "Saturday 13th At 5:50 I was awakened and got dressed and my bag was packed at 6:30. Had breakfast and left the hotel and Vienna or Wein at 8:15. We had a long trip of 11 hours from 8:05 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Played cards and read the entire book Jerry Jr. It did not seem as long a trip as it might have for I found much to amuse myself with. We are at the Hotel Union and I am in my room waiting for 10:10 p.m. to come when I am due in the bath room. I do not care much about traveling in the foreign railroads. Had a rotten meal in the wagon Restaurant or dining car." Dresden Berlin Mayene Cologne Amsterdam "Thursday 25th We took the train for the Hagen and reached there about 3:15. As soon as we arrived Mrs. F. D. and I hiked out to Scheveninging the famous watering place. The water was quite cold but we had a fine time. The bathing houses are on wheels and while undressing one is pulled out into the ocean where he is to swim. No walking the beach. In the evening the whole dam party went and it was not much fun for us." The Hague Antwerp Brussels Paris "Tuesday 31st .arrived in the gayest city Paris of Europe about 5:13. All our luggage had to go through custom house and it detained us quite a little while. The hotel is very large and my room is on the 5 top floor 283 steps from the lift by actual count." "Monday 6th Awoke at 7:25 put on some of my clothes and have been making up my back notes. After breakfast went with ma and Aunt Mary and we went to the office of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. They are well situated on one of the main streets and they gave us a copy of yesterday's paper

" London "Monday 13th Went and bought father a rain coat. Then I went to London Tower again and the Tower Bridge. Crossed London Bridge on foot and went up on top of the Fire Monument. After lunch went to Whole Sales Leather store and brought a fine dress suit case. Bought Mr. Lane his presents a gold case and cigarette mouth piece." The entries suddenly stop on July 16th with them still being in London. After that one finds three pages of a handwritten poem that seems to be a collaboration of past experiences and also his present experiences on board the Moltke. It sounds like he is writing it for a girl back home. At one point in the poem he says "poor John" and he very well could mean himself. This is a great European travel diary even without the historical family significance. The cover is really not in good condition at all poor in fact but the pages are clean and tight to the binding. It measures about 4" x 5 ¾". There is also the original pencil that came with the diary. BIO NOTES: "John Vance Lauderdale was born in Sparta N.Y. in 1832. At 20 he went to work as a druggist's clerk in New York City. He pursued the occupation for several years in both New York and Cleveland. He completed his medical thesis in 1862 and from April to August 1862 he served as a contract surgeon in the U.S. Army's Western theatre. From August of 1862 until 1864 he served as a physician on the staff of Bellevue Hospital in New York City. In March of 1864 he accepted a contract position of Acting Assistant Surgeon Department of the Pacific. He received orders to Utah and served at Fort Bridger. He joined the regular army in 1866. He married Josephine Lane in 1880 and honeymooned in Europe. The Lauderdale's spent four years at Fort Sully in the Dakota Territory. The couples first a daughter was born there in 1885. Tragically she died a short time later. Their second child Marjorie Lane Lauderdale was born 1886 and the third John Vance Lauderdale Jr. was born in 1889. While assigned to Fort Ontario in Oswego NY Major Lauderdale was ordered to report to Pine Ridge Agency South Dakota to help care for the wounded from what is now known as the Battle of Wounded Knee. He retired in 1896. In 1897 the family moved into their new home on 84th street in Brooklyn New York. In 1913 his wife Josephine Lane died. John Vance Lauderdale died in 1932 the oldest retired officer in the U.S. Army. He was a man of many interests. He had an avid interest in Natural History. He collected fossils viewed comets conducted experiments in chemistry and lectured on anatomy. He was an ardent amateur photography and artist. His life from his letters and journals are the subject of two books; "The Wounded River The Civil War Letters of John Vance Lauderdale M.D." and "After Wounded Knee; Correspondence of Major and Surgeon John Vance Lauderdale While Serving with the Army Occupying the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation 1890-1891." With very nice penmanship most of the time this notebook-style diary begins "1867 5th Month 6th." and then proceeds to detail the daily activities of this charming young man R.B. HAINES Jr. we estimate to be about 10 or 11 years old given the amount of time he spends fishing and playing in the barn balanced with his responsibilities through until October 1868. References to keeping and tending pigeons gardening building a chicken coop greenhouse growing pepper mint catnip flowers tomato and preparing for market and visiting friends and family are all noted. Travels include Burwood Miltown Westown Wilkes Barrie. There are also references to his brother Cappy Caspar going to boarding school Uncle Doctor and Aunt Lilly Uncle Bacon Aunt Hackers Cousin Samuel Morrice visiting the Wyoming Valley Monument where "a small 'car' with dwarfs came by and they were showing off why they were small to make money" "tryed to make part of a steam engine" and playing croquet trying to fix the mowing machine. This diary includes a letter and envelope written to his brother Casper signed with initials that was found in the book.Truly superb look at the world of a young Civil War era youngster who appears to be having a great life in pioneer Pennsylvania. 1885 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A BOSTON BASED STUDENT COURT REPORTER SERIOUS HIGH WHEEL PENNY FARTHING BICYCLIST AND FUTURE EDUCATOR OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION
BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS NEW YORK BANGOR MAINE. Very Good. 1885. On offer is a fascinating piece of 1885 handwritten manuscript Americana being a diary by a young man who appears to be the son of a ship owner of increasing commerce and a detailed look at a serious high wheel bicyclist. The diary begins in New York on January 1st when he apparently arrived with the Bark Haydn Brown of Boston which his father had part ownership. He writes about the Bark going into dry-dock being towed to 31st pier in New York and loading oil. He most of his time New York and particularly Brooklyn and attends theatre opera and other events. Watches "100's thousands skating on the ice" at Central Park. From New York he sails on the Fall River Line steamer Providence and arrives in Newport Rhode Island then takes boat for Boston his home. He appears to be grooming himself to be an educated gentleman and athlete. He takes lessons in German from the Berlitz School dancing lessons classes at Tuft's and plays polo. In April he begins work as a court reporter. Our author is keen on keeping fit and begins working out at a gymnasium. In June he goes to work at the W&N RR Co. in Worcester Mass. He also gets involved with going to sports events racing. He begins to intersect shorthand characters in his entries. In August our writer gets into high wheel bicycling. He buys a Royal Mail 58 inch bicycle for $140 another clue to his financial status given the cost of the high wheel is approximately 6 months of the average worker's pay at the time and starts riding all over the Boston area noting some remarkable times. To the Point of Pines in Saugus Chestnut Hill Allston. He rides to Dedham and then all the way to Attleboro. He goes up to Searsport Maine and rides around there as well as going to the skating rink. He and a friend took their high wheel bikes on board the steamer Cambridge bound for Belfast but she ran aground so they rode the rest of the way to Belfast. Watches a baseball game between "The Duffers" and "Muffore Comics". Returned home of the steamer Penobscot. In September at auction his father buys shares in the Bark Abbie Carver of Boston. Our boy seems to spend all his time riding his bicycle over considerable distances. In one entry Sept 17th he records riding: " .Lewis & I started for Waltham at 2:25. Got there at 3:15. Rode back after a little business of ¾ of an hour to City of Waverly Belmont Arlington Cambridge. Turned back & went to Allston and from there in Milton Brighton rode home making Gym at 5:30. Making 28 miles in 2 h 15 minutes". At the end of Sept. He leaves Boston for New York to take charge of teaching at the Gymnasium at Sing Sing. He returns to Boston in mid October via Fall River steamer Pilgrim. He evidently is on a career of being a Gym teacher and he talks about teaching "the apparatus". He goes to other cities in this capacity: Norwalk Conn. and Bangor Maine where he sets up the apparatus and heads up classes. He also meets Congressmen and other higher social strata persons. He ends his daily entries at Bangor where he is employed at the Gymnasium and the last entries most interestingly are written in shorthand. In addition he keeps a detailed record his expenses for the year. At the top of the list is his high wheel bicycle in which he gives detailed description. Also he kept a detailed record of his bicycle rides by date distance and length. This pocket diary lacks its covers but otherwise G overall and measures 4 ¾ almost 3 inches. Excellent archive of pioneer life in these eight 8 fully written handwritten diaries of Paul Fisk covering 1880 through 1888 with 1882 being absent. Mr. Fisk was a superb diarist inasmuch he has recorded all his travels events births deaths funerals weddings and prices of many of his purchases etc. He appears to be a journeyman carpenter and apparently much sought after: he works mainly for Doctors Professors and many of the jobs last weeks and months as he does much detail work. He also does work; for the 'Standard office; in the performing arts and concerns himself with the shows opening nights his sense of humor shows too: "Received four tickets of John Beck to sell. DONATION. He never fails to mention the names of those he does business with and research will find a wealth of genealogical financial and travel information covering much of the Montgomery County area and beyond. Events; being accosted by rowdies seeking cider; tour of the Remington factory seeing the Sprague Georgia Minstrels; working on printing racks; voting Democrat "all but Poormaster"; railroad trips; stagecoach travels; milk factory work; after being sick for nearly two and a half weeks he records his weight as 137 lbs.; playing in the string band; playing pool; viewed a Walking Match - "The darkie won"; clam bakes; Circus Vanamburgh; Democratic Rally . Interestingly Paul names everyone he visits and works for by name but the women he dates and calls on over the many years are only identified by initials. Overall these books are in very good shape and quite legible. London. Very Good. 1825. Disbound. On offer one of the earliest books devoted to riddles puzzles and mind-games. Circa 1825. Highly unusual with no copy in the British Library and as such very rare. The Book: The London Riddler or 'The art of teasing made easy: consisting of enigmas charades rebusses conundrums and transpositions: original and selected from the most approved sources and classically arranged according to an entirely new plan.' London : Hodgson and Co 1825 198 p. 1 illustrated folded leaf of various plates: 60 ill.; 16 cm. Original brown boards and paper spine label present but off interiors generally clean with only the occasional spot. There is a variant edition in the Library of Congress exactly matching this save for the imprint of William Cole with no mention of Hodgson. Riddles while today perhaps more associated with children's games did occupy an important and esteemed place in literature and history. They served not only as an amusement but to cultivate the intellect and memory. Voltaire Cervantes Goethe and Dickens all conceived riddles and their more modern appearance in literature can be found in the Hobbit and of course Harry Potter. Certainly this unusual and rare book collects many fine lost riddles and puzzles and serves as testament to 19th century leisure education and perhaps most of all British wit. The Library of Congress copy LC Control Number: 91156584 is found in the The McManus-Young Collection which "provides a rich survey of the literature of what Dr. Young terms "illusion practices" the magician's manipulation of the imagination of others and includes works on conjuring ventriloquism fortune-telling spiritualism witchcraft gambling hypnotism automata and mind reading." It appears in fact as perhaps the earliest book of its type in the collection. It should be noted that this anonymous work may be by a female writer. The British Library does contain a later 1838 volume entitled "Teasing made easy; a new pocket manual for all who would excel in this fashionable accomplishment and most important branch of the fine arts by a popular female practitioner." That volume appears to be based on or perhaps a later edition of the work for sale here. MOHAWK TRAIL CHARLEMONT MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Very Good. 1915. On offer is the original 1915 manuscript diary of Ernest Dickinson farmer lumberman and teamster living on the Mohawk Trail Charlemont Massachusetts. From his handwritten diary we get a one-year glimpse of this young man's life. He's a serious dedicated young fellow living in the pristine woodland of the Mohawk Trail in western Massachusetts. He carefully records his daily activities: hauling sawdust or grain or manure putting in fence posts building a sawmill pressing cider gathering maple sap hoeing cultivating hauling potatoes. We read of his encounters with Alice Whipple notes the death and burial of his 88-year-old grandmother and when he drives 19 miles to North Adams to have 12 teeth pulled. The next month he gets fitted for a new set of false teeth. Ernest works on town and state roads and helps repair the boiler machinery in a sawmill. For fun Ernest takes Alice to dances to the fair goes sledding attends Grange and Odd Fellows goes to "the pictures" and goes hunting. He never takes time off for church on Sunday and Thanksgiving and Christmas are just more workdays. 200 pp. Diary includes normal calendar population of cities weights and measures antidotes for poisons terms of presidents including Wilson etc. Standard leatherette diary with closure flap. On offer is a very unique pair of original 1948 - 1949 manuscript relics of Antarctic exploration being a diary and typed proposal with tucked in ephemera handwritten by "Wm. Gwynn Thomas Base F Argentine Islands West Graham Land" a crew member of the British Falkland Island - Argentine Island Base Camps for supply and research to the Antarctic Region. The main book is a handwritten diary and then there is a typed diary of a special expedition. The author does an exceptional job putting the reader right in the thick of this most interesting and historically well known island group. Dated February 24th 1948 through January 22nd 1949 he writes approximately 100 pages this is a triplicate book ruled feint lines - the carbon has only been used to copy one sheet at a time not triplicate of everyday life from the mundane daily chores on what they ate weather the dogs they had with them the maintenance tasks they had to undertake etc. and the many trials and tribulations of one living in a weather challenged remote and contested area. Along with the book there is a typescript journal on loose sheets of paper. By way of an introduction it begins: 'The John Biscoe arrived at Base F this evening and we met the chaps who were leaving when we took over. I went ashore fairly early and stayed chatting with the boys until quite late. The four who had been here a year seemed very pleased that their time was up & that they were getting out of it at last. Burd met the base leader Watson and Reeve the two general assistants and Stock wireless operator. From their tales I gather they have had quite a pleasant year one or two complaints but nothing serious. Most of the time we were together Stock & I discussed the radio set up here; he said he had managed to keep communications going very well during the year but did not have much to say in praise of the transmitter which in his opinion was too low powered for this job and suggested a bigger transmitter would greatly ease the work. March 31 It has been very cold today but I managed to keep fairly warm. Dave and Frank caught four seals this afternoon and had a bit of a job getting them back through the brash ice. April 1 Frank overhauled the small German engine today but it is of no use there's more rust than engine. I worked on the Villiers and had great success for a change. August 29 Base A party have got back safely so the 'panic stations' is over. Apparently they had been cut off and have had quite a time. September 16 There was a code message in today from base E telling of arrangements for a new Base K and also saying that I would be going to Signy a subantarctic island in the South Orkney Islands next year.Nov 2 .Jumbo brought back some sea urchins a limpet and a very strange looking item in the shape of an overgrown worm. We haven't decided what it might be yet but we have pickled it for future reference. We had penguin steaks livers and hearts today and a few eggs found in the victims. The taste of these compare favourably with the corresponding items in a chicken. Personal opinion only Dave did a pilot balloon ascent using a Langersed 150" balloon it reached 15000 feet before disappearing into some cloud.' Sworn at. The typed document is entitled Base D Hope Bay Grahamland Diary for the 5th Sledge Journey. The proposal was that a party of five with four teams should set out on a journey to Snow Hill Island with the object of completing the survey and geology of Ross Island.Weds Sept 1st to Thurs Sept 30th including a summary page on number of days miles made good total miles accumulative average etc & a report on the Condition of Hut of Swedish Expedition on Snow Hill Island. This document does not seem to be for the same year as the larger journal as there is no mention of a Sledge trip in there for September. HISTORICAL NOTES: RRS John Biscoe 1944 1584 tonnes operated from 1947-55. Named after the English explorer John Biscoe who discovered parts of Antarctica in the early 1830s. When a party of British scientists attempted to land from John Biscoe at Hope Bay Graham Land on February 2 1952 an Argentine shore party fired shots over their head ref Wikipedia There is a hand drawn map of the Argentine Islands where Base F is marked. On offer is a sensational original manuscript relic of American World War II Naval history training and education being a 'Class B Torpedo School Naval Training Station Norfolk Virginia' book filled with handwritten notes autobiography and addresses etc by the personable and charming Earl A. Louk who identified himself as "T/M 3/C Subic Bay Philippines" and he notes: "Aboard the fighting Gilmore BS I hope it sinks right now. Damn this new Executive Officer anyhow". Casual research suggests he was likely aboard the 'USS Howard W. Gilmore AS-16 was a Fulton-class submarine tender originally named Neptune but renamed Howard W. Gilmore in honor of Commander Howard W. Gilmore a Medal of Honor recipient.' The book is very extensive and has two 2 main sections: 150 pages of well filled pages of notes hand drawn diagrams charts etc. relating to his torpedo training and education and then starting at page 155 'My Naval Career' to page 173 his retrospective autobiography of his service giving 17 pages of narrative. Later there are 7-8 pages of addresses. Earl was from the very small community of Mingo West Virginia and from ephemera included one learns in the 'Home Town Publicity Questionaire' states in 1944 he had three children under 4 and a wife Marie Leary in his autobiography he states that he and a friend went to enlist but were underage so he must have married very very young. Howry of Willow Street Lancaster County Pennsylvania. Over 381pp in a neat hand complete with author's index to the manuscript followed by his preface. The importance of the work to Mr. Howry is evident given the quality of the book itself: a gilt-stamped spine title 'CHRISTIAN ARGUMENTS' black leather morocco cover over flexible boards 8 x 5 inches and two raised bands premium quality notebook. Research suggests that Mr. Howry espouses the state of Moravian Church throughout; the preface declares: 'I have written this as an incouragement sic to myself as the truth according to the word of God is always incouraging and as there is no salvation outside of the truth of the word of God and to obtain salvation is of great importance and as there is no salvation except in the name of Jesus neither is there any way to be saved from our sins but through Jesus. HERMAGOR AUSTRIA. Very Good. 1945. On offer is an original relic of Nazi Germany and the Third Reich's control and manipulation of young German women and men being a handmade photo album and memory book of a young woman's identified as Erinerung von Deinen time in the RAD the Reichs Arbeitsdienst Reich Workers Service which was created by the Nazis to combat massive unemployment particularly amongst the youth. Kids graduated from school at about 18 and finished with BDM girls or Hitler Jugend boys and were conscripted for a year into a work camp. The German RAD during the Second World War was an auxiliary formation which provided support for the Wehrmacht. The female section of the RAD with "training-education" camps RAD/HJ for girls where more used in supportive tasks such as service for civic military and agricultural projects and often in caring for children of farmers who were soldiers. The RAD was classed as Wehrmachtgefolge literally Armed Forces Auxiliaries. Auxiliary forces with this status while not a part of the Armed Forces themselves provided such vital support that they were given protection by the Geneva Convention. Some including the RAD were militarised. This particular camp was for young women and was in Hermagor in south-west Austria. The young women who wrote in this created a book of memories for a favoured girl who was leaving the group around the end of March 1945. There are some poems about friendship by famous poets like Goethe others appear to be original written by the young women themselves and all are for the recipient to remember her comrades from the work service. Historians and researchers of the era will find an interesting artefact of Hitler's plan to create an ideal German Community Volksgemeinschaft. Women were key to Hitler's success and as such all German girls were obliged to go to a Work Camp during WWII to do their "tour of duty" usually about a year. They were "trained" to be perfect German girls perfect housewives they had to be "real" German Austrian and even others were obliged to go to these camps. Hundreds of camps in Germany followed the same program from washing farming sports to political lessons cooking mountain climbing and so on. 1952 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN ACCOUNT OF A SAILOR ON THE USS NOA DD-841 AS IT SAILED FROM AMERICA TO UNDERTAKE A WHIRLWIND TOUR OF VARIOUS EUROPEAN PORTS EXERCISING DRILLS AND PROTECTING AMERICAN INTERESTS
ABOARD THE USS NOA. Very Good. 1952. On offer is a short but fascinating account of the 1st-class Military ship a destroyer the USS Noa. The USS Noa DD-841 was a Gearing-class destroyer in the United States Navy following World War I. She was named for Midshipman Loveman Noa. This diary contains only 15 handwritten pages yet it still manages to provide a thoroughly interesting and detailed look into a member of the USS Noa. The year the diary was written is not apparent but but it can reasonably be believed to be 1952. One of the entries states that the writer made calls to Brigadier General E. J. McGaw Commander of the Iceland Defence Force which came into being in 1951. Another search revealed another book from a sailor on the USS Noa which corroborated the places/dates and put it as the year 1952. The entries are incredibly interesting to say the least. The authors name and position on the ship are unknown. Judging by the content of the book I believe the author is some kind of radio operator as he writes often of sending communications throughout the diary. However there are instances of him going to lunch with higher ranked officials attending a Garden Party at the Royal Barracks in England and generally meeting with people of higher Naval ranks. There is a chance he is was a Non-Commissioned Officer. During the course of the diary the ship's goes through a number of different Ports of Call: Reykjavik Iceland Londonderry Ireland Plymouth and Newcastle England Hamburg and finally Bremerhaven Germany. The diary ends on June 25th while in the port of Bremerhaven. This diary presents a fantastic amount of information about the duties of this particular sailor on the USS Noa. His entries are thorough and detailed and fascinating for anyone interested in WW2 and post-WW2 life on a destroyer. The book is in very good condition. The covers and spine are free of any major aesthetic or structural problems. The diary measures about 5 1/4 x 8. The book itself is probably close to 75 pages in length with 15 of those pages having writing in them. The pages are in good condition with no discoloration or rips/tears. The handwriting is legible throughout in black ink. TEXT: April 22nd & 23rd Benham with K/V with Noa at 1730 R and formed 1350 relative. TE set course for Argentina Newfoundland.; April 23. Ships exercised at general drills and division tactics sizing ACP175 and ATP1. AF-16-CC tracking exercise and more tactics were held in the afternoon. Opiel USN The US Naval and assistant Naval Attaches in Sweden and Cdr. Svedelius Swedish Navy the Swedish Liaison officer. A Swedish band played the American National Anthem as ships entered. Ships moored at 0900 A. June 8th The Karlskrona Coast Artillery Regiment celebrated its 50 year jubilee. This was attended by a group of officers and petty officers. Enlisted men were again entertained at a dance by the borough.June 19th At 1000 Brigadier Holmes made return call. At 1100 Dr. Drexeluis Chief of the Senate Chancellery and Dr. Kuinemund Chief of Protocol made return call on behalf of Burgomaster Braxer. At 1300 lunched with COs at residence of Dr. J. K. Dunlap British Land Commissioner in Hamburg. Combined as official call. 1515 Dr. Dunlap made return call. At 1900 had cocktails at Vice Consuls J. Swing with group of 10 officers. 1852 VILLE DE PARIS RARE VOTING CARD COMING SOON AFTER THE TROUBLES OF THE SECOND COMMUNE
France. Very Good. 1852. Manuscript. "SCRUTIN SUR LE PLEBISCITE SOUMIS AU PEUPLE FRANCAIS." Government voting document with manuscript entry by official indicating the voter Emile August Maurin Postal Agent born 1819. This vote was mere days from Napoleon III being proclaimed Emperor. Quite significant this plebiscite given that the anti-parliamentary constitution instituted by Napoleon III on January 14 1852 was largely a repetition of that of the year 1848. All executive power was entrusted to the emperor who as head of state was solely responsible to the people. The people of the Empire now powerless to exercise any of their rights had to rely on the benevolence of the emperor. He was to nominate the members of the council of state whose duty it was to prepare the laws and of the senate a body permanently established as a constituent part of the empire. One innovation was made namely that the Legislative Body was elected by universal suffrage but it had no right of initiative all laws being proposed by the executive power. This new political change was rapidly followed by the same consequence as had attended that of Brumaire. On December 2 1852 France still under the effect of the "Napoleonic virus" and the fear of anarchy conferred almost unanimously by a plebiscite the supreme power with the title of emperor upon Napoleon III. RYE NEW HAMPSHIRE NH. Very Good. 1864. On offer are two 2 original 1864 Civil War era handwritten diaries kept by Charles E. Sleeper of Rye New Hampshire. Interesting and enigmatic Mr. Sleeper kept the two books one being sporadic with blocks of time missing while the other having been shared it seems by Mr. Sleeper and an unidentified partner. The shared book is almost fully written while the former is perhaps 50% written. Both include daily weather election news local news yellow fever deaths specified local events and a great deal about the Navy Yard where Mr. Sleeper spent a great deal of time. While the name of the naval yard is never specified it appears from other references to be Portsmouth and not Boston many mile further south. Mr. Sleeper also by example includes entries such as; 2 companies of soldiers made a raid at a store in Hampton and done mischief Col Pierce barn burnt down Fort Stevens near Washington attacked by rebels great fire at Portsmouth another fire at Penhallow St. Elkins Shannon Auctions going to Singing School James H. On offer is a sensational archive of six 6 manuscript letters handwritten by seaman Charles Stevens to his brother John Stevens in Cambridge Massachusetts. Historians and collectors of early and Civil War era New York will delight that three letters are on illustrated lettersheets from Lovejoy's Hotel New York and as such quite rare. This hotel was located on the corner of Park Row and Beekman Street. These letters exemplify the 'Brother against Brother' sense of the Civil War. There are three pre-war letters; Jan. 8 14 and 23 1861; plus Aug. 21 28 and Dec. 19 1861. Very interesting content between the brothers on opposite sides of the oncoming war with all mentioning President Lincoln and/or the war and include a shocking Lincoln reference of sexual innuendo. Here are snippets: Jan. 8 - "I am in New York yet. Some my folks has failed and it will be some time before I go to sea. The time is very dull here now and I expect there they are with you and all your Lincoln men. I expect you can now begin to see what you are come to.Look at the New York papers & read and the dull times.all on your partys account.The Country may go yet and if so I go South with them. I think it is the best place for me." Jan. 14 - "I cannot tell how much longer I shall be here in NY. If old Abe had not been elected time would be good here now and I would have been at sea long ago. They will do something soon. Fite fight or let it alone. I do not care a dam which. If they do I hope the South will whip. I will help them." Jan. 23 - "Your business is good I expect being a Lincoln man. But I am not so it is bad with me."; "I have a bad opinion of all the Lincoln folks. But the Rail he first split is here here now that is his wife. I think be what they say it did not hurt her much. But never that you will see what you are coming to. The North cannot whip the South." Aug. 21 - "Loots lots of troops going through New York this week and vessels of all kinds from the Navy Yard going to sea. HADLEY MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Very Good. 1938. Softcover. On offer is an interesting historical manuscript diary of a young Polish-American woman named Josephine D. Nycz who lived with her parents in Hadley Massachusetts. In many ways a very typical hard-working girl-next-door and new generation American experience as she details her life: often going dancing with her group of friends; celebrated her 26th birthday at White Eagle Dance; she notes that she bought some liquor that night; lots of hard work he started work at the Seville Restaurant evenings at Paul's Cafe Whately Inn Bay State Hotel Cozy Corner Grochmal's etc. In spring she's setting out onion plants all day and in summer weeding onions and then clipping them. And she digs potatoes. On June 22 after Smith College closes for summer no more work at restaurant. On July 20th she had Warsaw Poland on the radio. In fall she's screening onions then back to work at Seville. Of particular interest to local historians and collectors are her entries that start on Sept. 18 and continues until Sept. 21 when the disastrous "Long Island Express" Hurricane of 1938 blows through. On Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. the dike holding back the Connecticut River breaks. Flooding everywhere crops washed out barns blown down no phone or lights. Ten people slept at home. According to records the 3000 people of Hadley were evacuated to Amherst as result of flooding. Standard small diary with color maps calendar. US NAVY ELECTRICAL SCHOOL HAMPTON ROADS VIRGINIA. Very Good. 1934. On offer is a fascinating and one-of-a-kind document from the history of the United States Navy. It is an exceptionally curious and well-illustrated students workbook for a 6 month 24 week course at the U.S. Navy Electrical School in Hampton Roads Virginia kept by Fireman Second Class Joseph Camerata. The book contains approximately 230 pages of detailed and handwritten class notes drawings graphs schematics and charts on a huge host of topics dealing with electricity and electrical engineering. The book is broken up into sections by week. Topics include sections on electrical theory such as magnetism resistance currents and circuits as well as sections on motors storage batteries telephony gyro compasses generators searchlights naval and ship organization and much more. However what makes this book so special and wildly unique are the nearly 150 meticulously drawn illustrations schematics charts and diagrams many if not most in full vibrant color. Each weekly lesson is introduced with illustrations in different styles but almost always in color. Several are simple two color blocks the rest a colorful blend of rainbow and psychedelia. There are also many many simple but elegant drawings of electrical schematics and diagrams done in a very skilled and steady hand. The section on magnetism is probably the best example of this packing 16 different expertly drawn illustrations and diagrams of various colors and hues in the space of 5 pages. Its easy to see that Camerata is a very talented young man. He also included drawings in a cartoon style completely unrelated to the class at hand such as Bonzo the Dog Jiggs from the comic strip Bringing Up Father a scene of a man coming home to his sleeping wife a sailor delivering a covered food casserole and a number of others all in full color. These illustrations and diagrams elevate what would ordinarily be an interesting book on extensive electrical training in the Navy into an absolutely one-of-a-kind document. After the course is finished there is a Navy Training Course Certificate pasted onto one of the pages certified that Joseph Camerata has passed the training. It is certified by Lieutenant C. L. Waters and Commander C. G. West. The last two pages of the book include two different cut outs pasted onto the pages. One is the illustrated story of the Buddha and the other is news article of Vagabond Specialists. The back of the front cover includes a list of Cameratas electrical instructors: Mr. Erwin - Lt. Comdr. Of Electric. School.; Mr. G. Trauth - Asst. Officer in charge.; Mr. Myrick - 1st term; Mr. Alshure - 2nd term; Mr. Cameron - 3rd term; Mr. Reiss- 4th term; Mr. Ranhovich - 5th 6th term. The book is 300 pages in length in which there is writing in 230 or so pages. Cameratas handwriting is remarkably easy to read and the writing is legible throughout the book. There is very little evidence of wear or aging on the pages on the inside. The cover is half leather bound and shows many little holes and tears on both the front and back cover. Structurally the book is still in excellent shape. Background: Upon graduation Camerata was assigned to the USS Kanawha a replenishment oiler that served the West Coast Canal Zone Caribbean and Hawaii. After receiving an honorable discharge at San Diego in 1936 he hiked to Seward Alaska where he joined the Marine Cooks and Stewards Union and served the crew passengers and the Captain's table on various vessels until 1942. After a short stint as a Second Diesel Engineer Camerata enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as the First Mate and Navigator on the Edmond J. Moram a military ocean tug. After leaving the service in 1946 he settled on a farm in Fredonia New York where he spent many years tending his Concord grape vineyard. While tending to the grapes he also worked at Allegheny Steel Corporation in Dunkirk for 20 years.
