‎c1890s ORIGINALUNIQUE MANUSCRIPT AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ALS HANDWRITTEN BY THE NOTED NORWEGIAN POET‎

‎London England 1890. On offer is a charming original manuscript letter undated though assuredly circa 1890s handwritten and boldly signed by Norwegian artist Frits Thaulow. Sent from the Princes Hotel in London to a Mr. Edwin Davies as mentioned in the body of the letter Mr. Thaulow confirms his desire to meet and review the gentleman's collection. Collectors and historians of the artist will recognize that autograph and manuscript items in his hand are extraordinarily rare at this writing we can find nothing else online. BIO NOTES: Frits Thaulow 20 October 1847 - 5 November 1906 was a Norwegian impressionist painter. Frits Thaulow was a leading Norwegian landscape painter in the naturalistic 1880's and was from around 1889 also a familiar and admired figure in the European art world. Johan Frederik Thaulow was born in Christiania the son of the wealthy chemist Harald Thaulow 1815-1881 and Nicoline "Nina" Louise Munch 1821-1894. Thaulow was educated at the Academy of Art in Copenhagen in 1870-72 and in the following years 1873-75 he was under the tuition of Hans Gude at the Baden School of Art in Karlsruhe from 1873 to 1875. After a stay in Skagen during the autumn of 1879 Thaulow returned to Norway in 1880. He became one of the leading young figures in the Norwegian art scene together with Christian Krohg and Erik Werenskiold and helped established the first National Art Exhibit also known as Høstutstillingen or Autumn Exhibit in 1882. Many of the most famous Thaulow Norwegian scene are from Åsgårdstrand which had become an important center for artists and painters dating from the 1880s. He lived much of his life in France. Thaulow moved to France during 1892 which became his home until his death in 1906. Thaulow soon discovered that the painting scenes in Paris did not suit him. His best paintings were from his time in small towns such as Montreuil-sur-Mer 1892-94 Dieppe and surrounding villages from 1894-1898 Quimperle in Brittany in 1901 and Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne in the Corrèze département 1903. Thaulow received a number of honors for his artistic activity including his appointment as commander of the 2nd Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav in 1905. He was received the French Legion of Honor Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus from Italy and the Order of Nichan Iftikhar from Tunisia. He died in Volendam in the Netherlands. The National Gallery of Norway feature 37 of his works. Other prominent displays include The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Busch-Reisinger Museum at Harvard University. Overall VG. ‎1930s SUPERB NOTEBOOK OF EARLY 20th CENTURY INVENTOR DETAILING HIS DOZENS OF INVENTIONS AND PATENTS MOSTLY IN THE NEW AND EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES OF THE DAY THAT HAVE RESONANCE TO THIS DAY‎

‎UNITED STATES. Very Good. 1930. On offer is a splendid journal/notebook by a prolific inventor in the early 20th century. The journal measures 7.5 inches by 5 inches and is in excellent condition. It contains 200 pages and they are 100% filled. Roland D. Eaton is a very creative and prolific inventor and this journal is a testament to a man with a very agile mind. The journal dates from 1936-37. It is chock full of notes calculations explanations and drawings of items. In the Index he lists 72 different processes or inventions that he has created or is working on. Examples include: 3 Inch Cathode Ray Part List including a detailed drawing of the device p. 3 Spraying Screen Techniques for Bulbs p. 6 Mirror Tube Design p. 11 Magnetic Iconoscope - Ideas p. 26 Low Voltage Cathode Ray Tube p. 125. Some entries are discussions he has had with others. For example on Nov 1st 1936 he visited a man named Ressler and they discussed electron aberrations: Discussion on Electron Optics with Ressler p. 19. Other entries are descriptions of experiments such as Design of Typewriter Tube Containing 42 Characters p. 53 Aviation Instrument p. 57 Stroboscopic Current Applications p. 111 and much more. Attached to p. 94 is a typewritten statement explaining how he invented a vacuum-walled drinking glass in May 1937. It bears the witness signatures of 3 other men. The notebook is filled with detailed annotated drawings. There are tables and many calculations to support the conclusions that he is drawing. Entries are signed and dated and show that Eaton was engaged in his experiments and discoveries on a daily basis. His output was substantial. While biographical date is not available it is noteworthy that there are 8 patents issued to a Roland D Eaton between 1931 and 1954. All were in the field of optics and were taken up by various industries field such as Fairfield Camera Corp. and Allen B. Du Mont Laboratories Inc. Eaton was clearly a brilliant man and his notebook is an excellent record of the types of investigations being pursued in the years before WWII. Some of them had application in the soon to develop television industry. On offer is a very interesting original 1967 uncensored manuscript diary of the war in Vietnam handwritten by an unidentified US CIA operative describing his initial time of 2 months on station in South Vietnam. He mentions leaving Goffstown New Hampshire and beginning his 12 day orientation in Saigon going to the Delta and his attempt to get his area opened the writer is dealing with frustration and everyday road blocks that he surprisingly details over 13 pages of legal-sized paper. Much of the content is 'insider' and intimate. While the writer is unknown he is not shy to identify others he is dealing with on the Vietnamese side by name of position and sometimes rank. Of further interest is his acknowledgement of recieving his commission because of his assets in conventional and unconventional warfare. Overall a fascinating look at the American war effort in south-east Asia. On offer is a superb 19th Century manuscript relic of European genealogy and family history from the personal library of the fascinating and controversial Major-General John Frederick Charles Fuller CB CBE DSO 1 September 1878 - 10 February 1966 a British Army officer author military historian strategist notable as an early theorist of modern armoured warfare including categorising principles of warfare. He was also the inventor of "artificial moonlight". He was also a noted occultist and for a time close friend of legendary occultist Aleister Crowley. The lovely 38 page red cover book is dated August 1888 Naunhof Germany near Leipzig engraved with the name JFC Fuller in silver lettering the contents entirely in German are handwritten in a fine calligraphic hand. Fuller's name is inscribed on the first inner page. The book signed by Otto de la Chevallerie is a history and genealogy of the Chevallerie family and states that only 5 copies of the book were made and all kept in the family. It notes that one copy went to a son-in-law and that man was Fuller's father through his marriage to Selma Marie Phillipine de la Chevallerie. Overall VG. BIO NOTES: One online source provides: Fuller John Frederick Charles 1878-1966 army officer was born on 1 September 1878 at The Pallant Chichester Sussex. He was the eldest son of the Revd Alfred Fuller 1832-1927 of the parish of West Itchenor and his French wife Selma Marie Phillipine de la Chevallerie who had grown up near Leipzig. Fuller had a cosmopolitan background and when he was eight the family moved to Lausanne Switzerland. In 1889 he moved back to Sussex to attend a preparatory school Fulmer House West Worthing before attending Malvern College 1893-5. Lacking ambition or direction Fuller was placed in the army class at the suggestion of his maternal grandfather. On offer is an original typed letter signed TLS dated The Society for Ethical Culture NY April 14 1886 1-1/2 pages by Felix Adler 1851-1933 Jewish rationalist intellectual popular lecturer religious leader and social reformer who founded the Ethical Culture movement. Although not mentioned by name this was written to Douglas Volk the American artist noted for his famous portrait of Abraham Lincoln that was used for the postage stamp. Also of note this letter comes on the heels of Volk's founding of the Minneapolis School of Fine Art Minnesota now the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and served as its director until 1893. Adler writes: "My Dear Friend: I must send you a few lines even if they be brief and printed in the stiff letters of the typewriter which you must excuse. I want to tell you simply how dear your kind words are to me and how I treasure and shall always treasure your precious friendship. I am glad to learn that your first days in Minneapolis have been spent in bright sunshine and I trust it may be a favorable augury for the near and distant future. You have indeed a great work before you and it must cheer and inspire you to feel that you are to plant your great and holy art in virgin and fruitful soil. I shall follow your progress with constant and undeviating sympathy you may be sure and I trust you will not fail to keep me informed even of every little thing that occurs in your life of every little sign of progress and of every disappointment for these too of course will not be wanting. With kindest and sincerest good-wishes from all of us to all of you and especially to you your friend Felix Adler." BIO NOTES: At the age of twenty-four Adler founded the New York Society for Ethical Culture in 1876. His sermon on May 15 1876 is considered to be the date on which the religion he called Ethical Culture was established. His lectures before this society on Sundays in New York were well known and attended and were routinely reported on in the New York Times. Adler's belief in deed rather than creed led his society to foster two innovative projects. In 1877 the NYSEC sponsored Visiting Nursing where nurses and doctors if necessary visited the homebound sick in poor districts. This service was eventually incorporated into the New York City health system. A year later in 1878 a Free Kindergarten was established as a tuition-free school for working people's children. It evolved over time into the Ethical Culture Fieldston School. In 1902 Adler was given the chair of political and social ethics at Columbia University which he held until his death in 1933. ‎PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA PA. Very Good. 1970. On offer is an original huge archive of handwritten and typescript communication and orders sent to a bookseller for books related to the circus clowns performing animals and carnivals. Circa 1970s - 1980s this archive includes many items on circus or clown letterhead business cards from circus operators and performers and postal covers with stamps from all over the USA Canada UK and Australia. While some of the letters are lists of book orders relating to the circus others are correspondence directly from the circus performers themselves many contain illustrated circus advertising as well as autographs from performers and operators. There is a sensational mix of material here.Most of the letters are addressed to Frank Barry whose book selling business was located in Philadelphia. There are 230 individual letters/postal covers with most containing several pages of enclosures with an estimated 500 pages of circus material for the collector to sort through. All of the material is in very good to fine condition with most of the envelopes/covers opened with a letter opener neatly on one end. ‎1914 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY BY THE COMMANDER OF THE FAMED AND NOTORIOUS HMS AGINCOURT FROM DETERMINED MOBILIZATION TO THE DANGEROUS NORTH SEA‎

‎HMS AGINCOURT THE NORTH SEA. Very Good. 1914. On offer is a superb relic of World War I and British naval history being a manuscript diary kept by the Commander of the Royal Navy's famed dreadnought the 'HMS Agincourt' at the beginning of WWI during her assignment as part of the British Grand Fleet in the North Sea engaging the German Kaiserliche Marine's High Seas Fleet. This diary begins July 29th with a call to mobilize and then there is the immediate outbreak of the war in August 1914 through to December 1914 very neatly written in ink with one photograph some sketches cruising orders and newspaper cuttings. This important historical first hand account was handwritten by George Napier Tomlin RN Rear Admiral 1875 - 1947 gives first hand content and detailed insight into the workings of the British Grand Fleet and documents the confusion that existed in the immediate days after the war broke out on August 5th 1914. Tomlin's original assignment as he notes on the 30th is aboard the HMS Majestic. Tomlin writes regarding the appointment as one: 'which I look upon as an insult. If there is to be a fight I want to be in a fighting ship & not in one recovered from a scrap heap'. Excitingly his assignment changes and he is one of the first aboard a newly 'commandeered' Turkish ship renamed Agincourt. Collectors and historians of the First World War will also delight knowing that diaries unlike letters were not censored. The British had concentrated their Fleet at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands and 'HMS Agincourt' was sailing back and forth to the Bight of Heligoland to engage the Kaiser's Fleet. Much can be learned about life aboard a British warship as the journal is replete with details about navigational positions fleet details officers' names and positions courts martial administered etc. Much anxiety existed about German submarines and mines and Tomlin's drawings elaborate on mines in the North Sea as well as the British Fortification with wire nets of the Harbour of Buncrana Ireland. Frequent reference is made to the C in C Commander in Charge Jellicoe who had his headquarters on the 'HMS Iron Duke'. The diary also shows the concerns about Zeppelins and mentions their appearance. Visits aboard the 'HMS Agincourt' by 1st Lord Winston Churchill were recorded on September 17 while the ship was anchored at Loch Ewe in Scotland. Finally Tomlin mentions the sinking of various British and German ships among them the German U-18 and the German Battle Cruiser 'SMS Scharnhorst' by British Ships off the Falkland Islands where the famous German Admiral Graf Spee met his fate. Political Background: In 1904 in response to the build-up of the German Kaiserliche Marine's High Seas Fleet it was decided that a northern base was needed to control the entrances to the North Sea. Originally Rosyth was considered for the base and then Invergordon at Cromarty Firth but construction in both places was delayed leaving them largely unfortified by the time of the First World War. Scapa Flow was used many times for exercises in the years leading up to the war. When the time came for the fleet to move to a northern station Scapa Flow was chosen for the main base of the British Grand Fleet even though it was also unfortified. John Rushworth Jellicoe admiral of the Grand Fleet was constantly nervous about potential submarine or destroyer attacks on Scapa Flow and the base was reinforced with minefields artillery and concrete barriers starting in 1914. These fears were borne out when German U-boats twice attacked British ships in Scapa Flow though the attacks themselves did no damage. The first by U-18 took place in November 1914; but the sub was rammed by a trawler searching for submarines while it was trying to enter Scapa Flow causing the submarine to flee and then sink. 12mo 100 pages. ‎MANKATO MANAWA KANSAS KS SEYMOUR WISCONSIN WI. Very Good. 1892. On offer is an archive of six 6 original manuscript diaries handwritten by Andrew C. Walch a newspaper man who worked mostly in Mankato Kansas in the 1890s. The diaries represent 1892 1893 1894 1895 1896 and 1897. The early diary begins with Andrew living in Seymour Wisconsin in the fall he moves to Mankato Kansas. The next four diaries 1893-1896 show him still in Mankato and finally in the 1897 diary he's in Manawa Wisconsin. Andrew is an unstinting diarist rarely failing to write and all the diaries are full save for 1897 which is about ¼ full. Historians and collectors of late 19th Century Kansas and journalism will find an open book in Walch. Here are snippets: "March 18th 1892 Seymour Wisconsin Got up at 4:45 a.m. Helped do the chores and then walked to town and took the train for Black Creek to attend District Lodge. At the depot Edith Standard met us and Charles and I went off with Alfred Holz. We saw John Heintz and his two pretty sisters. At 8:30 met Mr. Burgogne and we went to school until recess then went to lodge. I was appointed press reporter. At 5 o'clock Mary Tubbs Charles Flora Stevenson and I took in the town and at 6:56 took the train for home. Saw Mary to Merehl's store and then went to Mr. Conner's to practice for the church. Afterwards met Chief Fuller Bert Flint and Lafey Sherman and went home. Retired at 11 o'clock." "October 5th 1892 Seymour Wisconsin Got up at 8 o'clock. Went to call on Ella Raw Mrs. Flint and then home to dinner and at 11 o'clock after bidding al the folks "Good Bye" started on my journey. Arrived at Oshkosh at 4 o'clock and put up at the Tremont. Went to the city hall where the G. L. was being held and met all my Good Templar friends. In the evening took the R.W. G. L. degree with 23 others. Frank McKinny and I caught Ruth Willia and Myrtle Thresher and went for a walk and then took them home. Went back to the Tremont and wrote to mother and at 12:50 left for Chicago. Truth one." "November 1st 1893 Mankato Kansas on a trip Ft. Atkinson Wisconsin. Got up at 7:30 and Otto and I took in the town and the High School buildings and then drove over to Whitewater to see Emma Will and George. Took dinner with them and then we drove back to the Fort and at 2:30 took the train for Beloit arriving there at 7:00. Charles met me at the depot and we took in the town a little and went to the salvation army barracks and then went back to the house and had a chat with some of the college boys and Charles and I rolled in about 11:45." "November 13th 1893 Got up at 7 o'clock and after breakfast Charles and I went downtown and up to see the water works and at 10 o'clock I left for Chicago. Went immediately to Simmons and then went down on Wabash Ave. to see Dr. George Westcott. Had a good visit and went to supper with him and met Mrs. Westcott. About 9 'clock went back to Simmons and Maud was the only one home. Visited an hour and at 10:23 left for Mankato. The train was crowed and I had to spend the night in the smoker. Did not get much sleep." "July 15th 1894 Mankato Kansas Got up at 6 o'clock. At 8 Clifford and I stared for Esbon. Went to the U. B. Church and afterwards went out to White Mound and got the girls and drove to Burr Oak. We went to Roger's and had a fine time. About 8 o'clock we went downtown and had some cream and then started back to White Mound. Yum Yum. After bidding Minnie goodnight drove to Esbon where Clifford soon joined me and we rolled in at the Mallory House at 1:15 a.m." "July 4th 1895 Mankato Kansas Worked a little while in the a.m. at the office. Received a letter from mother. Took a bath and then went down and played tennis awhile. At 10 o'clock took Lillie Allen and we went to the picnic in Black's grove. A shower came up and we took refuge in Grundy's granary and had our lunch there. At 6 o'clock it cleared off and about 6:30 14 of us went to Montrose to see the fireworks. Left Montrose about 8:45 and got caught in a terrible storm but we were well protected and did not get wet. Arrived in Mankato at 11:15. Tony Chapman rolled in with me at 12 o'clock. All in all it was one of the most enjoyable fourths I ever spent.""June 27th 1896 Mankato Kansas Got up at 6 o'clock and walked up to Joe Harrison's and got my washing. Worked at the office in the forenoon and in the afternoon went to Concordia. Frank Thompson Bertha Fuson and Nettie Lindgrove were on the train going to Jewell. Lillian and Pearl Allen met me at the depot and I went up with them to supper and spent the evening. Met Billie O'Reilly and rolled in at the Barons House at 11:30. A man was shot on the pavement directly under my window about one o'clock but got away and no one knew how bad he was hurt." "August 24th 1896 Mankato Kansas Worked at the office. In the evening Clifford Lynn and I called on the girls at Dr. Spencer's and we all went to the depot to let the train in and then to the Medicine Show and afterwards for a walk. Viva and I went down to the house and hid the hammock and then went for a stroll and did not get back until 12 o'clock. Cliff and Mara had disappeared so we swung the hammock and had a time until 1 o'clock and I was about to leave when Cliff and Mara showed up. They had been eaves dropping on us. We all had a good laugh and then Cliff and I left." "December 27th 1897 Manawa Wisconsin Worked at the office. Went to Green Bay to attend the Masonic Installation of officers in the evening it being St. John's Day. Had a pleasant time and good supper. Prosser and Dittmer went down from Seymour. Nat Stewart's wife was on the train and Charles and I went over to supper with her. Rolled in at the Commercial Hotel at 12:30." BIO NOTES: Online research finds a biography on Andrew in "Pioneers of Little Wolf Wisconsin" and in part it says: "The first printing office in Manawa was located in a small building back of the old Central House Hotel that is now Peterson's Tavern. From here the Advocate office moved to rooms facing Second Street in the First National Bank which today is the Eastling Building. Mr. Andrew C. Walch came to Manawa from Mankato Kansas in 1896 to take over the Advocate. He began his career in the newspaper field while still a student at Seymour High School. After graduation in 1890 with the first class to finish four years of study at Seymour High School Mr. Walch went to Mankato Kansas where he helped an uncle put out a weekly newspaper continuing there until he purchased The Advocate. Following the Christmas rush of 1898 Mr. Walch locked his print shop and returned to Kansas where he was married on December 27 to Lillian Allen daughter of the Reverend and Mrs. E. W. Allen. Mr. and Mrs. Walch established their home in Manawa and observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary here in 1948. Three years prior to this Mr. Walch had marked his 50th year in newspaper publishing. Around 1915 The Advocate office was moved from the bank building to its present location on Union Street. This building had previously housed a general store and at one time the Diehl sisters operated a millinery store and dress making shop there. For a number of years Mr. Walch was assisted in the business by his eldest son Allen "Pete" Walch. Later the ownership passed to another son James Walch who continued as editor and publisher until February 1956 when he sold the business to Francis Byers of Marion plus other stockholders who formed a corporation." Adding further depth to this broad look at Kansas in the 1890s we find numerous newspaper clippings between the pages. Each diary other then the early one is a nice "Standard" diary hard cover and a good size measuring about 4" x 6 ¾". The 1892 diary has a soft cover and is in good shape measuring about 3 ½" x 5 ¾". ‎1942 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT WORK JOURNAL AND PERSONAL DIARY OF A HARDWORKING 74 YEAR OLD MINER AND METALLURGIST WORKING AND TRAVELING FROM MEXICO TO CANADA AND MINING SITES IN BETWEEN‎

‎DOWNEY CALIFORNIA BOWEN ISLAND HURLEY NEW MEXICO. Very Good. 1942. On offer is a fascinating 1942 manuscript journal of metallurgist Oba Wiser of Downey California. Oba was born on February 7th 1868 thusly 74 years old and one cannot help being amazed at how much work he was still doing in the field. He spends most of his time at four different mines sites one on Bowen Island in Canada where he spends from January 10th to April 8th and working in the laboratory. After the Canadian site he heads to a remote mine in Holden Washington where he works from April 10th to about April 30th. After this he makes a quick stop to see his wife in Downey and then goes to a mine in Chihuahua Mexico Silver City and finally ending up in Hurley New Mexico at the Chino Mines. On May 16th he heads back to Downey and stays there until June 14th and that's when his long trip begins as he heads back to Holden Mine until August 28th and from there to Britannia Beach in Canada. He stays in Britannia until about November 21st when he finally heads back home and stays there until the diary entries end on December 31st. There is a long handwritten diary entry for every day of the year. Oba was in the 1919 'Engineering and Mining Journal' mentioned as metallurgical engineer who resigned as assistant mill superintendent of the Chino Copper Co. of Hurley New Mexico to accept the management of the Republic Mining and Milling Co. Hanover New Mexico. He had quite the long career in the mining field if he was a superintendent in 1919 and still working hard in 1942. It is also known that he married Ellen a Swedish woman almost 20 years his junior. They had two children Virginia and Wendell. He died 8 years after this journal was written and 3 days before his 82nd birthday. Oba's entries are so long and detailed much mining information and metallurgy and a great deal about the war: 1942 "January 1st How lovely it is to be able to get up early feeling well and anxious to get at the task to be done on the first day of the new year. And how fortunate to have a task worthwhile as I am approaching my 74th year. Ellen and Wendell busy all forenoon washing and cleaning the house. I almost finished the job of getting my files in order to leave early next week. Today is a holiday and no mail. It was nice and bright this morning but heavy clouds and rain in afternoon. We were home all day. In the evening I wrote J. D. Vincent of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City. He is already taking on a heavy load. It will make his mark. Manila has all but fallen as per radio." "January 8th Crescent City Calif. Lauff Hotel. Sybil Buddy and I got out at 6 A.M. this morning at the Lauff Hotel in Crescent City Calif. This was so early that we had a hard time finding a coffee shop open for breakfast. It was not raining when we left for Grant's Pass at 7:10 A.M. In fact it only misted at times the whole day. We made good time even though the highway was very crowded all the way to Grants Pass and on to Roseburg. Just awhile in Eugene we encountered the remnants of the big sleet storm. Many trees had all the tops broken off with hundreds of telephone wires and poles down for miles. Salem Oregon was the hardest hit however the sleet gave out North of Salem with snow and slush at Portland. Arrive Portland 5 P.M. Looked for rooms for a whole hour and finally came over to Vancouver Washington before finding any. We stopped at St. Elmo an old hotel. Made 372 miles today." "January 10th I was up at 6:30 A.M. Bathed and shaved. After breakfast take boat for Britannia at 9 A.M. Could have taken boat at 7 P.M. last night for Britannia and saved $5.00 expense money. I got to Britannia at 12:30 P.M. It was very foggy and boat was two hours reaching Bowen Island generally made in one hour. Found Browning home with a cold. Hobb and Stewart on annual report. Have not done much on research since I left. They now have ore for 300 put in drift on 4500 level and gold values are fairly good…….""January 19th I was out at 6:30 A.M. as usual. I spent practically all day in research lab on No. 8 ore. Found several pieces containing free gold mainly quartz. Russell Steward ground and blanketed a charge. Cleaned the gold up with acid. Found very little fine gold. Browning got a letter from E___ today sending two samples from Nor-Acme for assay. I found 10 gr from both No. 1 and 2. Looked like both were pay ore especially No. 2. Ebbutt wanted specimens at No. 8 ore from 4500. Irwin came down from mine saying he would get the specimens of the 6 oz. material from 4500 drift to be prepared as soon as our Dimet saw came. I went to Munro's for a fine turkey dinner tonight then with them to movie Bing Crosby and home after show. British still falling back at Malaya. Heavy gas explosion at Sacramento." Yesterday was a good day for recovery in Cy plant 6.4 oz. best so far for April. Sacket came back today." "May 4th Traveling to El Paso all day Had a good sleep last night and was up at 7 A.M. Good breakfast 7:30 A.M. Diner was filled with soldier….Went to Hilton Hotel." "May 5th Warm today in El Paso Texas and me with a heavy suit on. Today was a Gala Day in El Paso as well as in Mexico. 500 Mexican troops came across the border and marched thru the streets of El Paso 500 American troops went back with them marching thru streets of Juarez. First time in history. Fennessy took me to luncheon. In the evening I had dinner at the Barker's……." "May 12th Left El Paso at 8 A.M. on Parrish stage for Sliver City. Selma was at depot with a package of papers for me. We had a flat tire at Deming. Arrived Silver City 1 P.M. Stop at Hotel Murray. Eloyer was there to meet me. Wright had gone to Mogollon. Met Fred Newman. He drove me over to Sam's Diner where I spent hours visiting with Mr. Knaebel of ______Co. They are building a new 250 ton mill to treat ore they have developed since my last visit here last August. See my diary last year. Ira Wright came down and had dinner with me at Murray Hotel. I retired at 10 P.M." "May 13th Up early at Murray Hotel. At 8:30 Ira Wright Wilbur Wright Elayen and I left Silver City for Black Range. We pick Dave Boise and Strong up at Ground Hog Mine. Arrive Grandview inspecting workings and on showing. More development needed here. Have lunch at the company boarding house. After lunch visit Columbia Mine. I was muchly impressed with Columbia. They need more development work also. We are shipping about 30 tons per day to Black Hawk Mill. Got back to Silver City at 5 P.M. At 6:30 P.M. we had 3 rounds of drinks and then sat down to a fine dinner at Sam's China Restaurant. Joe Murphy was there……." ‎ABOARD THE U.S.S. GENERAL H.F. HODGES AP-144. Very Good. 1945. On offer is a diary and logbook of a crewman on the maiden voyage and many others of the U.S.S. General H.F. Hodges AP-144 in 1945 and 1946. The diary begins on April 6 1945 the day the ‘General H.F. Hodges’ was commissioned. The next day sets the scene for what will come in the rest of the diary: “April 10. As a member of the crew I was put in the 2nd division. We loaded and then went to a few other docks. We went out on our shake down. That was various drill and mostly to get aquainted with the ship and the fellows. We went to San Diego and made Liberty. I made one Liberty in Mexico. Boy what a place that was. From there we went back to Frisco. We loaded again.” On May 10th the ship begins its maiden voyage after taking on troops and a contingent of 42 nurses. Over 3000 troops were on board for this first trip. THe ship heads west towards Indonesia in support of the accelerating push toward Japan in the last few months of the War. The author writes of the ship crossing over the equator and the line-crossing ceremony that follows. The voyage seems mostly simple and easy. The author writes of boxing and wrestling to amuse the troops listening to records and watching movies. At the end of May the ship arrives in Hollandia in Indonesia where the author has some shore leave “got mail. Had 3 cokes.” Then onto Manila where most of the troops on board departed. The author stays with the ship as it picks up troops returning home and casualties of the war “some looked good others not too good” in Tacloban and Biak. The ship sails back for San Francisco on June 18th and the maiden journey ends on July 4th where the author writes of a huge Independence Day celebration. A few days later the second voyage begins as the ship leaves the U.S. for for New York via the Panama Canal “Sure was a sight to see. They really got things down pat.” The ship leaves New York and departs for Naples on a troop rotation voyage. On August 14th as the ship is passing through the Strait of Gibraltar the ship received the news that the war was over. It returned to Boston in late August with passengers from Naples then made two long voyages through the Suez Canal to India bringing home American troops returning back to America when she reached New York on Christmas Eve. The author writes of leaving Boston arriving in Port Said going through the Suez Canal “It took 10 hours to get through” arriving in Calcutta “People live the same. All dirty. The married woman have a red dot between their eyes.” rounding the Cape of India going back through the Suez Canal and returning to New York. The second voyage to India goes roughly the same. After the end of the author’s fourth trip he writes that the ship is moved to Yonkers New York for repairs. It moves back down to New York City at the end of January and the author departs on his fifth and last trip with the U.S.S. General H.F. Hodges going Ceylon and India continuing by way of the Pacific Islands back to the United States and arriving back in Seattle at the end of March 1946. The ship is decommissioned in April and then “transferred at 0900 to Operating Base” in May. On May 10th the author leaves for St. Louis presumably his hometown. The last entry of the book comes on May 15 1946: “At 1530 was Discharged.” The book is in very excellent condition with no dog eared pages no tears and the cover is clean with 4 firm corners along with a tight spine. There are roughly 150 pages in the whole book but only the first 27 pages have writing in them with 14 pages total written in. The handwriting is clean and extremely easy to read throughout and shows no smudging and little fading. The title page reads: “U.S.S. General H.F. Hodges. AP-144. Commissioned 6-April-1945. 50174. Manufactured by the U.S. Printing Office.” On the back page there is a log of the 13 places outside of the United States that the ship docked during the time in which it was commissioned as well as the dates in which the ship was in that port. The book is in very good condition with no dog eared pages little sign of any wear or tear and the cover is clean and with a tight spine. Overall. VG. Sample text: “May 19. I was initiated into the Royal Order of the Shellbacks. It is a world wide thing. They go for it in a big way. They dress all up in costumes. You are called up before the judge an he reads your sentence. Then they send you to the paint and you get a paint job. Then to the stock and cut your hair. What a hair cut. From there you are sent to the cleaners. Then they put you in a chair and maybe cut your hair or put oil an grease all over you. Then they throw you back in a tub of salt water and ducked you until you yell shellback. Then you crawl out and they dose you with a hose to help you a little. You are then a Shellback. Before you are called up they make you do all kinds of things. They call you a Pollywog. The ship an men received the Golden Dragon that is for crossing the date line and equator at the same time. We skipped from Sunday to Tuesday.”; “June 6. Manila. Got 4 hours Liberty. Things sure is a mess. The people are poor as hell. I bought a few things. All of the buildings are blown to pieces or are all shot up.”; “July 4th San Francisco. We arrived in Frisco at 2300. Anchored out. Tied up at the dock at 0800.All the troops were off by noon. They cried and kissed the ground when they got off. Went back out and anchored. Loaded a few supplies. Made two Liberties. The fellows really spent the money. This was the Maiden Voyage and all went well. Some of the fellow are over the hill. Joe Brock is one. ‘End of Maiden Voyage’”; “Aug. 14. We arrived at the Straight of Gilbralter. On the starboard side was French North Africa. On the port side was Portigual and Spain. You could see the Rock good and plain. Got the news that the war was over at 2400. The fellows really had a big time.”; Aug. 17. We passed the Isle of Capri at 0700. We arrived in Naples Italy at 0930. We got Liberty. Had a fairly good time. More whores than anything else. Bought a few things. Started loading the Doggies gear. The cities wasn’t bombed too much just along the water front.”; “ Sept. 21. Arrived at Port Said at 1000 in the morning. Took on oil. And at 1700 started through the Canal. It took 10 hours to get through. Suez Town arrived at 0500. Left at 0700 through the Red Sea. I got a few things and best of all some mail.”; “Nov. 29. Arrived in Karachi India at 1900. Got 3 hrs. Liberty. Loaded the 30th. People live as poor as all the other places.”; “Mar. 2 1946. Arrived at river. Anchored out. Started up river at 1000. The ship was crewed by the U.S. Coast Guard until decommissioning. She was named in honor of U.S. Army general Harry Foote Hodges. She was transferred to the U.S. Army as USAT General H. F. Hodges in 1946. She was launched 3 January 1945 under Maritime Commission contract MC #711 by Kaiser Co. Inc. Yard 3 Richmond California; sponsored by Mrs. Hodges Dickson; acquired by the Navy and commissioned 6 April 1945 Comdr. C. H. Hilton USCG in command. On 1 March 1950 she was transferred to the Military Sea Transportation Service MSTS as USNS General H. F. Hodges T-AP-144. ‎1916 THROUGH 1940 LARGE ARCHIVE OF 100 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT LETTERS TO AND FROM A DEVOUT CHRISTIAN SCIENTIST HIS WIFE AND SISTER‎

‎1916. On offer is a large archive of handwritten letters of particular interest to Christian Science historians and collectors. The writers were devoted believers and faithful followers which is obvious from even a casual reading. The grouping consists of 105 handwritten letters of which 100 date from 1916-1924. The last 5 are around the 1930's and 1940's. Most of them are addressed to Alex P. Olsson who lived in Junction City Oregon and are from his girl friend and eventually his wife Rose Herminghaus of Portland Oregon. A goodly number of them are also from Alex to his sister in Central Point Oregon while he was away at war. Alex was a Naval Band member during the war which gives a rather different and highly interesting perspective. Here are just a few snippets: 1917 "February 21st Dear Alex……Last Wednesday mother and I spent the day in Salem. We visited the legislature at the state capitol both morning and afternoon. Then we went through the blind school and met two Christian Scientist inmates. We met several of the Scientists in Salem. Did you ever see Mr. Burt the tenor again I had the privilege of reading Mr. Wilson's letter from you telling of your demonstration. That certainly was fine Alex. Isn't it joyful to know we have the truth ever present. I had a most wonderful visit with mother. I feel that so much more time must be given to C.S. study……Your Friend Rose Herminghaus" "May 28th Dear Alex……Mr. Reed a Scientist knowing of me wrote and asked if I would consider a book keeping position with the Pacific States Fire Insurance Co. The minute I read the letter I knew that Love was opening the way for me…….I rode over to Vancouver over the new Interstate Bridge and we walked around the barracks. We go to some good movies once in awhile. The young folks crowd from the church have planned a big picnic at Lake Oswego on Decoration Day. I have not decided whether I will go or not. Some of the boys have enlisted so it will perhaps be their last picnic with the crowd….Most Sincerely Rose." "June 27th Dear Betta ……That little clipping telling of Albert Forgey's marriage was sure a surprise. I met the girl when I was home xmas but I never thought he would get married until he was out of the service. I don't approve of those kind of marriage do you But they seem to be marrying wild through "everybody is doing it". Our bandmaster was married a few weeks ago to a girl he met since we came here. Seems to be a very nice girl. He gave me a dandy big photo of himself and I'm the only one in the band he gave to……We have a man in the band who has been in the circus and show business since he was seven years old and he is about thirty now. He was in the Chatanque business before he enlisted and his brother is manager of several big companies now in the east. I told him about Sells Floto Circus and he told me about how they use to do. They would send an advance agent to arrange it with the mayor to not allow the show to enter the town. Of course there would be an extra big write up in the paper and in this way it would be put more forcibly before they eyes of the public. The first journal 151 pp. is autobiographic in nature detailing highlights of his childhood such as teachers where his family lived and so on. Overall this is a super post World War I pre-Depression Era through the beginning of World War II archive. In depth and detailed to the point one imagines that William was obsessive compulsive in nature as he never failed to note the weather record the river's height and temperature baseball stats aviation firsts and triumphs railroad tragedies and in later years the news from Europe and any other scrap of information that crossed his radar screen - local collectors and historians plus Americana enthusiasts will be delighted at this picture of the times. On offer is an original small archive of four 4 ephemeral items including: two 2 note pad style diaries and two 2 check books with stubs and unused checks all being handwritten and having belonged to General Alfred E. Bradley 1864-1922 Chief Surgeon of the American Expeditionary Force in France during WW1. This archive relates to his serving as a military observer in England during 1916 and1917 just prior to U.S. entrance into war through to the War's end. Historians and collectors of the era will recognize the uniqueness of original material from high ranking officers. The first diary dated "Trip July-Aug. 1916 and has a French stamp on the cover. Bradley has signed his name in pencil on the cover "Bradley". It starts out seeming to be an accounting book but morphs into cryptic notes made covering various subjects including medicine dosages prisoners etc. perhaps notes to jog his memory later. Here are snippets from the first: "Off. auxiliary part of 29th C.S. Georgina Court. 6 A. S. in operation _ to train 500 wounds received in previous riding adjacent 18:20 and German prisoners. German Pris. working in road. camp latrine in operation. Drop pits 14-20 feet with close fly tight box. signed Col. Bradley. bring in trucks not practicable seen by enemy. Dr. Jones in our company. work shops for orthopedic cases. draws diagrams of splints he saw . Brain cases closing up cranial opening with celluloid plastic. 2 cases 20 standing. put into wounds and closed if possible. applied and left open as long as 4 weeks without change. If discharge appears it is simply cleaned up externally and outside dressing put over. Few cases of lead food poisoning. patients in good condition. Left Newcastle at 4:54 arrived Leeds 7:35. message from Sir B. M. to operation infirmary." As to the check books the first is from The Seaboard National Bank and contains some unused checks including notations all in Bradley's hand of checks he used and the purposes for the checks the period is from March 1917 through Feb. 1918. An unused 2 cent stamp is taped in the front cover. The second check book is similar covering the period from July 1917 through May 1918. Bradley apparently used these check in France and there are two unused checks from the Farmers Loan & Trust Co. located in Paris. Again notations on the stubs of those checks he used indicating their use including one "advance for uniform". BIO NOTES: Bradley was born in N.Y. and graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1887. He entered the Army Medical Corps in 1888 as a 1st Lt. and Asst. Surgeon at Fort Slocum. He then spent most of his early career out West at Fort Omaha Nebraska and Fort Sully South Dakota and was involved in the Sioux uprising at the Rose Bud Indian Agency. As Captain in 1893 he served at Forts Custer and Yellowstone. During the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection Bradley served on a hospital ship that traveled to Cuba Puerto Rico Gibraltar Japan and Hawaii. He was Attending Surgeon in the Philippines and later Commanding Officer of the Division Hospital in the Philippines. In May 1916 prior to America's entrance into WW1 then Colonel Bradley was sent to England as a Military Observer while Wilson "kept us out of war" he was not stupid to think we would stay out of war and wanted to be prepared in all aspects including military medical. When the U.S. finally entered the war in April 1917 Bradley was promoted to Brigadier General and became Chief Surgeon of the American Expeditionary Force in France. He became ill before the close of the war and returned stateside in 1918 but was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his services abroad. He retired from the military in 1920 and died in 1922. His son Major General Follett Bradley was the Commanding General First Air Force in 1942. On offer is a very interesting original manuscript diary handwritten by the noted author Albert Shaw who did the Review of Reviews and many other works in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Of the 35 pages of entries including his noteworthy trip to visit American educator and the founder of Berry College in Rome Georgia Martha Berry at her school in Mt Berry Georgia in 1941 there are a number of pages of literary and scholarly commentary. It says in part: Dated June 1941 Trip to Mt. Berry - Cincinnati. "Left Winter Park 5:28 PM in Jacksonville for Rome Georgia to spend day at Berry Schools. Sent Carbon Copy by express today to AS Jr which I will probably call Ohio as I remember will try on this trip to revisualize old scenes and note changes. Arrived Rome 10 AM met by Tracy Byers and Inez Henry guest rooms in log cluster of buildings very beautiful…At lunch Mrs Wright widow of Judge Wright of Rome Judge W was trustee and adviser Mrs W is Martha Berry's sister motored about by Tracy Byers many improvements since last visit summer school now on commencement was about May 25 Boys all at work harvesting finest in US built up grad way as easy to create well as to let things…Now have beef herd too on with more than 100 brood cows slaughter for school…New dairy plant for Jerseys brick and red brick tile roofs most picturesque boys made bricks and built one building after and then over a period of seven years Cooper and Cooper of Atlanta architects nothing haphazard…Today and tomorrow cattle and dairy experts are coming from state and govt to inspect herds and plant note educational feature of construction work…Asked to have catalogue and up to date reports sent to me…Virginia took 3 small kodachrome films about 150 feet altogether. Visited Martha Berry at 5:30 PM in Berry Mansion ill with bronchitis and heart trouble will improve we think with further rest guest room in look houses quite perfect…Miss Watkins is from Arkansas highly trained and very original in designing rug patterns carvings…" BIO NOTES: WIKIPEDIA: Albert Shaw July 23 1857 - June 25 1947 was a prominent American journalist and academic of the early 20th century. Born in Shandon Ohio to the family of Dr. Griffin M. Shaw Albert Shaw moved to Iowa in the spring of 1875 where he attended Iowa College now Grinnell College specializing in constitutional history and economic science and graduated in 1879. While a student Shaw also worked as a journalist at the Grinnell Herald. In 1881 he entered Johns Hopkins University as a graduate student. Shaw was elected professor of international law and political institutions at Cornell University but resigned the post in 1891 to accept Stead's invitation to establish an American edition of the Review of Reviews. Shaw served as editor-in-chief of this publication until it ceased publication in 1937 ten years before his death at the age of ninety. Shaw married Elizabeth Leonard Bacon of Reading Pennsylvania on September 5 1893. Documents were maintained by an aero-space firm in Massachusetts that went out of business in the nineties but whose name we do not know. Papers include diagrams descriptions technical data and patent info for devices that were likely issued to purchased by or owned by the company over many years. On offer is a superb fine and unique handwritten manuscript book representative of top tier 18th century European education and study of astronomy including theory problems corollaries and observations and with relation to map making geography and philosophy. This elegant book would have served as a course 'text' at the Catholic University of Louvain as evidenced by the engraved title page vignette of a major building at Louvain straddled by portraits of Plato and Aristotle while overhead the Latin motto "Porcus Alit Doctos" features Mary Joseph and the baby Jesus on one side and a caped shepherd on the other and then inscribed by hand in the central panel by or for philosophy student Jacobus Van Asten Leendanus ANNO 1786. One online source provides a succinct explanation as to the importance of astronomy at this time in history: "During the course of the eighteenth century the combination of theoretical and practical advances allowed astronomy to solve most of the outstanding problems that had been raised by the work of Newton and the earlier astronomers. New instruments such as the micrometer reflecting telescope and achromatic telescope allowed the cataloging of stars with increasing precision and the discovery of new phenomena such as aberration nutation nebulae and a new planet - by the end of the century astronomy seemed to have become the most perfect science and astronomers were beginning to speculate concerning the origins and shape of the universe." In handsome cursive handwriting 20 x 16.5 cm 8vo original calf raised bands and mottled paper boards there is some wear to the hinges but is otherwise sturdy; features nine engraved plates many fold out and a number other graphics throughout a previous bookdealer's notes identify the engraver as Charles Becker who worked at Louvain University at the time of the birth of Louis XVII Benezit I pp.563. Approx. 150 pages. Complete. The manuscript has especially interesting section on the problems of map-making with latitude and longitude.
