On offer is a terrific photographic collection consisting of nine photographs connected to the Año Lasaliano taken at the Gran Stadium Cervecería Tropical all featuring Cristal beer marketing plus an additional photograph from a later Lasallian celebration. Five photographs approx. 10 × 8 in. show hundreds of alumni and students of the Colegio de la Salle during the Año Lasaliano a jubilee year proclaimed worldwide by the Institute of the De La Salle Brothers to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of St. John Baptist de La Salle Patron Saint of Schools. This centenary was observed globally from May 24 1950 through November 21 1951 by Lasallian institutions across the world. Two additional photographs of the same event measuring approx. 14 × 11 in. bear the blind stamp “Funcasta / Fernández. ”A further photograph approx. 10 × 8 in. shows another celebratory event organized by the Cuban Colegio de la Salle a few years later. A final image also approx. 10 × 8 in. depicts the crowd in the stadium—likely connected to one of these events though uncertain whether to the Año Lasaliano or the later celebration. Context and SignificanceThese seven key images provide visual insight into how Cuban Lasallian institutions participated in the global commemoration “Celebrando el Tercer Centenario de San Juan Bautista de La Salle 1651–1951.” It was exceedingly difficult to locate published Cuban references to these events. One reference was located in the appendix of the April 29 1951 issue of Diario de la Marina pp. 70–71. The two large photographs bearing the Funcasta / Fernández blind stamp almost certainly document the work of Generoso Funcasta Boizán 1908–1965 one of Cuba’s most accomplished photojournalists. The name Fernández likely refers to Carlos Fernández Funcasta’s colleague at Carteles magazine; both men were active there in 1950–1951. The younger photographer Ernesto Fernández b. 1939 later credited both as formative mentors. The event took place at the Gran Stadium Cervecería Tropical during the Año Lasaliano. Advertising visible on the stadium boards promotes Cristal’s “Mantín” product accompanied by the slogan “La fórmula de la salud. ”The later photograph of the subsequent Lasallian celebration also taken at the Gran Stadium shows similar ceremonies but with updated iconography. The field sign reads “Escuelas Cristianas” the emblem of the Hermanos de las Escuelas Cristianas / De La Salle Brothers and the Cristal advertising differs. Based on the slogan “Malta Cristal: la fórmula de la juventud ” this image can be dated between 1953 and 1956Malta Cristal branding under that tagline first appeared in Cuban media in 1953 and persisted until roughly 1956. Images documenting special events held by Cuban Colegio De La Salle schools are exceptionally scarce. While international Lasallian institutions widely celebrated the 1950–1951 tercentenary Cuban visual records are seldom encountered. Furthermore photographs bearing the “Funcasta / Fernández” embossing are rare survivals of mid-century Cuban press photography. All prints are original photographic prints or very early reprints from a single Cuban academic source. Condition ranges from Good to Fair with minor bends folds and occasional stains but no large tears. All images are intact and have been carefully preserved. BIO NOTES: The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools—commonly known as the De La Salle Brothers—was founded by St. Jean-Baptiste de La Salle 1651–1719 in Reims France during the 1680s. Canonized in 1900 De La Salle revolutionized Catholic education by introducing trained lay teachers vernacular instruction graded classrooms and accessibility for the working class. His model became the foundation for one of the world’s largest Catholic teaching orders Catholic Encyclopedia 1910/2020; Lasallian. Info n. D. . By the early twentieth century the Lasallian educational mission had spread globally with key institutions established in Europe the Americas and Asia. In the Philippines for example De La Salle College now De La Salle University was founded in 1911 by nine Brothers from Europe De La Salle University n. D. . In Cuba multiple Colegio De La Salle campuses operated though documentation is fragmented. According to former student Manuel Chávez Fotos de la Habana group 2024 locations included Marianao Vedado Miramar Palatino Nuevo Vedado and Santa María del Rosario; another alumnus recalls a business school in Civic Plaza. The Vedado campus—founded in Old Havana in 1905 and relocated in 1921—had by 1957 more than 5000 students including 1000 scholarship pupils. Its facilities featured science laboratories and a Natural History Museum and its textbooks were adopted in other Cuban schools Dimas 2023. Following the Cuban Revolution of 1959 the Castro government nationalized all private and religious schools. On offer is a small but significant archive related to Cuban singer Bartolomé Benny or Beny Maximiliano Moré Gutiérrez 1919–1963 better known as Benny Moré. The archive is equally important for its connection to the post-Revolutionary Dirección Provincial de Cultura del Poder Popular and to the musicians it promoted. The centrepiece of the archive is a 32-page printed program for a September 1981 live cultural event held at Havana’s Teatro América being the Segundo Festival Provincial de Música Cubana “Benny Moré. ” The festival featured a competition between thirteen Cuban musical acts gala tributes honouring César Portillo de la Luz and Roberto Faz and related performances by leading Cuban musicians. The program opens with an introduction by Guanary Amoedo praising post-Revolutionary Cuban artists. A translated excerpt reads: “The Revolution has allowed our instrumentalists orchestrators composers and artists in general to reach a high technical level which is constantly improving… we are not surprised by the quality of the works presented at the Second Provincial Festival of Cuban Music ‘Benny Moré ’ organized by the Provincial Directorate of Culture of the People’s Power whose fundamental objective is the development stimulation and promotion of Cuban music. ”The program lists the jury orchestra conductors invited orchestras and production team and outlines the events for each festival day with the featured artists. Each of the thirteen competing acts receives a two-page spread with a full-page black-and-white photograph performance credits composer orchestrator and performer and complete song lyrics. It was hosted by Eduardo Rosillo Marialina Grau Aseneh Rodríguez and Ramón Fraga and organized by the Centro/Unidad Provincial de Espectáculos y Carnaval de Ciudad de La Habana a branch of the Dirección Provincial de Cultura del Poder Popular SEE BIO NOTESThe program illustrates the early results of Cuba’s post-Revolutionary centralized entertainment management system and offers an exceptional snapshot of the early-1980s Cuban music scene — both the institutionalized remembrance of Benny Moré and the state’s curatorial role in national music culture. Rounding out the archive are two postcards printed in 1999 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Benny Moré’s birth published by Ediciones Pontón Caribe S. A. each featuring a black-and-white photo under rights held by BISART. The first postcard titled ¿Dónde estabas tú shows Moré looking curiously at a contemporary. The second untitled postcard is a close-up profile of Moré. These editions produced jointly by BISART and Pontón Caribe attest to his enduring posthumous fame and Cuba’s continued institutional commemoration of its musical icons. The festival program measures approximately 10 × 7 inches and is in Good condition with mild age toning and some spine separation at the staples but remains intact. The postcards are Very Good with only light toning. Included for context as a gift to the buyer and at no charge are three printed photographs of Benny Moré produced on Kodak paper in the 1990s and held by the Cuban collector who assembled the archive. These are not originals but complementary reproductions. BIO NOTESIn post-Revolutionary Cuba the government centralized cultural administration eliminating private promoters and absorbing them into state agencies overseen by the Dirección Provincial de Cultura del Poder Popular. This Directorate organized public shows managed artists’ contracts and coordinated the Havana Carnival Cubarte 2007; Bibliografía Cubana 1981; Archivocubano n. D. . A related unit the Unidad de Casas de Cultura supervised community arts centres and promoted local participation in music theatre and visual arts Regalado 2010. ‎1903 Pair of Cuban Episcopal Appointment Letters from Bishops of Havana and Pinar del Río Announcing Their Canonical Installations Following the Reorganization of the Cuban Church‎

On offer is a finely preserved pair of early-Republican Cuban episcopal letters each addressed to “Al Sr. Gobernador Civil de Matanzas” and written within forty-eight hours of one another in November of 1903 formally notifying the provincial civil authority of new episcopal incumbents. Though issued by different dioceses Havana and Pinar del Río the letters share the same diplomatic register and courtesy formula B. L. M. Besa la mano evidence of the Church’s restored protocol with the Republican state soon after independence. The first “Pinar del Río 19 de Noviembre de 1903” is from Braulio Orúe y Oyarzun newly installed Bishop of Pinar del Río. On his printed heading “Braulio Obispo de Pinar del Río – B. L. M. ” he reports that “con fecha 18 del actual ha tomado posesión de este Obispado ” on the 18th of this month he took possession of this Bishopric offering his respectful compliments. His autograph appears beneath with a marginal docket “Nov 23 — Avísese recibido atentamente” kindly noted. The second “Habana 21 de Nbre = Noviembre de 1903” is from Pedro González y Estrada newly elevated Bishop of Havana by Pope Pius X. On letterhead bearing the diocesan arms and the heading “El Obispo de la Habana – B. L. M. ” he notifies the Governor of his advancement and extends formal consideration. The lower margin notes “Nov 26 — Avísese recibido cordial y afectuosamente” received cordially and affectionately. The shared addressee near-contemporaneous dates and identical courtesies show routine yet revealing church–state notification practice at the dawn of the Republic. Both employ the deferential closing formula “Besa la mano”. This is a phrase whose persistence from colonial to republican correspondence encapsulates the Church’s continuity amid political change. BIO NOTES: Braulio Orúe y Oyarzun 1839–1904 a Basque-born prelate and former auxiliary of Havana became the first bishop of the newly created diocese of Pinar del Río in 1903 guiding the see through its inaugural year. Pedro González y Estrada 1843–1914 a Cuban cleric later renowned for rebuilding parochial structures after the wars of independence assumed the Havana see in 1903 under Pius X strengthening ties between the Cuban hierarchy and Rome during the Republic’s early years. Together the letters constitute a compact archive of church–state protocol in early Republican Cuba: formal language paired courtesies and episcopal insignia addressing a secular magistrate. They preserve the tone of late-colonial politeness carried into the new polity and document how ecclesiastical authority was publicly acknowledged by civil government. Few such official letters are documented in private collections; surviving examples are chiefly preserved in diocesan archives. Condition: Both on original cream wove/laid paper measuring approximately 9.5x7.5 inches. Printed headings with brown-ink holograph completions. On offer is an original 1872 certificación de vigilancia issued in Matanzas to Doña Magdalena Bofill authorizing her to obtain official permission vista a la expedición for the transfer of two enslaved men—Félix a forty-two-year-old of African birth and Mariano a twenty-six-year-old criollo Cuban-born —from the southern district of Matanzas to the district of Lagunillas under the jurisdiction of Cárdenas. Signed by José Benítez Inspector of Vigilance Inspector de Vigilancia del Distrito del Sur the document bears the embossed official seal of that office and the blue Sello 8º fiscal stamp 2 ½ Pesetas 1871. It is numbered N. º 270443 and includes manuscript endorsements at the top “Expediente n. º 628 / Obra 2/1872 / Carta de aviso” together with a marginal clerk’s notation “Gato N. º 55” likely an internal filing or registry code. The text reads in part: “Certifico que Dª Magdalena Bofill de esta misma del barrio de la Iglesia solicita vista a la espedición para el partido de Lagunillas jurisdicción de Cárdenas por dos esclavos Félix de Africa de 42 años y Mariano criollo de 26 años los cuales existían empadronados y residiendo en este distrito. Y para que pueda obtener dicho documento expido la presente. Matanzas Octe 21 de 1872. José Benítez. ”Issued only six years before the formal abolition of slavery in Cuba 1880 this certificate represents the bureaucratic machinery of slavery’s final phase—when cédulas certificados de empadronamiento and licencias de traslado documented the internal movement of enslaved laborers between sugar districts. The Matanzas–Cárdenas corridor was one of the island’s richest sugar regions and Lagunillas referred to a plantation zone inland from the port of Cárdenas. The identification of both an African-born and a Creole enslaved man typifies the generational overlap of Cuba’s late slave era when African survivors of the illegal trade coexisted with Cuban-born descendants on the same estates. The Chinese coolie trade a system of indentured labor that targeted young poor Chinese men operated from 1847 to 1874. Throughout this period African slavery was slowly being abolished around the world. The coolie trade was initiated by Britain and later dominated by both Britain and the United States. Chinese coolie laborers were sent to work in British American and Spanish colonies and the nature of the trade evolved throughout its 27-year operation due to social and political pressures. It took place primarily between Macao then under Portuguese rule and Havana Cuba and its manifests and certificates often mirrored the bureaucratic precision of the present document. A rare well-preserved example of Cuba’s late-slavery administrative system complete with seal stamp and clearly named enslaved individuals—ideal for institutional acquisition and teaching collections concerned with race labor and the mechanics of emancipation. Very nice group dealing with the portrait of Queen Alexandria. Included in this collection is an original invitation to the portrait viewing a letter dated 1905 from daughter Alice Hughes to a Thomas Wallace of Connecticut regarding a tour of their studios another dated 1907 again from Alice Hughes to Mr. Wallace regarding the Queen Alexandria unveiling and the inclusion of an invitation should he be able to make it and a letter dated 1907 from Edward Hughes to Mr Wallace regarding the completion of the Queens painting signed twice by Edward Hughes with postcript. Letters are in fine shape with original envelopes each letter about 4 pages 3" x 5" signed. letters are complete and in fine shape. Overall a very fine group. BIO NOTES: London artist Edward Hughes was an exceedingly popular portrait painter in European high society. His commissions included the Prince of Wales his brother Prince Albert and his sister Princess Mary among other royals and persons of wealth.
