"The manufacture of cotton gins was begun here West Bridgewater in 1816 by Eleazar Carver whose inventive skill perfected the original Whitney gin" Sargent A Handbook of New England p.582. From 1823 to 1844 Carver was awarded six patents for cotton-gin improvements and refinements. At the 1835 exhibition of the Plymouth County Agricultural Society his heifer calf took second prize as reported in the New England Farmer & Gardener's Journal. In 1846 he earned a premium from the Plymouth Society for "a specimen of very large and very palatable peaches."
