A fine engraving from Maria Sibylla Merians classic work. Maria Sibylla Merian daughter of the German engraver and publisher Matthäus Merian devoted herself to the study of European insects and their metamorphoses. As a result of the wealth of tropical varieties being brought back by the Dutch West Indies Company she decided to visit the Dutch colony of Surinam herself to study and paint the insect life there. She sailed with her daughter Dorothea in June 1699 from Amsterdam and remained in Surinam until 1701. Also Maria Sibylla Merians elder daughter Johanna went to Surinam to complete her mothers work. Amsterdam 1719/40. No binding. In excellent condition. 390 by 390mm 15¼ by 15¼ inches. Original antique copper engraving finely hand colored. The fruits of the guava are either round or pear-shaped. They are also distinguished by the number of seeds embedded in the soft pulp. The moth Sphinx du tabac with caterpillar and pupa uses the guava as a food plant. She sucks the nectar from the flower in flight. The caterpillar on one of the lower branches pupates in the ground. The woolly megalopygid caterpillar with the yellow cocoon pictured above belongs to the flannel moth which mainly inhabits the tropical regions of South America. A fine engraving from M.S. It depicts a combination of a plant with a typical German landscape between 1650 to 1719. These allegorical emblemata engravings were composed and engraved in a very similar style as the famous allegorical illustrations which were published by Matthaeus Merian for Ludwig Prince of Anhalts Der Fruchtbringende Gesellschafft Nahmen Vorhaben Gemälde und Wörter in 1646. In this series for every of the 400 members of theFruchtbringende Gesellschaft a unique allegoric engraving was created. It seems that Bernhard Valentini either aquired from the Merian heirs inventory or from an unknown source copper plates with these allegories and used those then in his own herbal or he arranged on his own them to be created. He did this already prior with the copper plates of the flower book by de Bry which he used in his flowerbook and which he extended then in the same style. All of these allegories are showing a combination of baroque garden scenes landscapes city views or castles. Each of these decorative allegories is depicting a plant specimen in front of a topographical background. This engraving is printed into a page with descriptive German text for this plant specimen. Back gilt with a red morocco letterpiece. Marbled paper on the boards. The architectural border on the title-page filled with fable animals encompasses the printer's device of Josse Badius Jodocus Badius or Josse Bade which features a printing press. A sign reads: 'Prelum Ascensianum' or 'Press of Asse' since Badius was from the Flemish village of Asse; on the press the date 1520. BATYR Base de Typographie de la Renaissance n° 27498; the date 1520 is repeated in the colophon on the last page. Woodcut initials Condition: Binding worn at the extremities. Front joint starting to crack. Old ownership inscription on the title. Paper of the right & left lower corner of the title page skillfully restored. Occasional old ink marginalia. Margins of 8 leaves have been repaired skillfully. Two small not irritating wormholes in the preliminary leaves. The last page is skillfully mounted. The 2 leaves with the 'epistola nuncupatoria' by J. Argyropulus have erroneously been bound between leaf II & III Note: Basilius Magnus bishop of Caesarea also known as Saint Basil the Great 329/30-379 AD certainly was one of the most brilliant ecclesiastical orators of antiquity combining 'rhetorical skill with simplicity of thought and clarity of expression'. J. Quasten 'Patrology' vol. 3 Utrecht 1963 p. 216 The editio princeps of the Greek text of his 'Opera' was published in Basel in 1532. A Latin translation of only a part of Basil's works made by the Italian humanist and theologian Raphael Volaterranus Raffaello Maffei had been published earlier in Rome in 1515. Our book on offer is a second augmented edition of Basil's works in Latin. They were edited by the French humanist scholar Jacobus Faber Stapulensis Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples ca. 1455-1536 who is best known for his important translation of the New Testament into French. In the short preface the Parisian printer Badius Ascensius explains that Faber Stapulensis had sent him for publication Latin translations of other not yet published texts of Basil 'Basilii vere Magni monumenta aeterna cedro dignissima'. Leaf A1 verso The collection opens with the 'Hexaemeron' i.e nine homilies on the six days of Creation in the opening chapters of the first book of the Bible book Genesis. Leaves 1/26 'There is no work in late Greek literature which could be compared with these homilies in rhetorical beauty'. Quasten p. 216/17 They were translated by Johannes Argyropilus or Argyropoulos a Greek scholar who had fled to Italy after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Next come the first 5 books of 'Adversus Eunomium' the oldest of Basil's dogmatics writings in which he refutes theses of the heretic Arians maintaining a difference in essences between the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit. Eunomius was the leader of a sect that adhered to an extreme form of Arianism. They believed that Jesus Christ was not of the same nature as God the Father. Leaves 27/55 These texts were translated by the Byzantine émigré scholar Georgius Trapezontius. The leaves 55 verso/159 contain a reissue of the Latin translation of 1515 made by Raphael Volaterranus opening with the 'Monodia Gregorii Nazianzeni in Magnum Basilium'. They also include about 18 homilies on the Psalms. The last part leaves 159/178 contains Basil's 'Regula' in the Latin translation of the Gaulish monk Rufinus Aquileiensis 344-411. This physician and educator served as dean and chancellor of Stanford University's School of Medicine then served as Secretary of the interior under Hoover 1929-32 after which he became third president of Stanford 1933-43. TNS 1p 7" X 10½" Secretary of the Interior letterhead Washington DC 1932 March 29. Addressed to Charles T. White a Lincoln scholar and writer. Very good. Small and minor tape stain. Transmits "my recent address on LINCOLN." Accompanied by a TDS mimeographed copy of typed double-spaced address 5pp rectos only 8" X 10½". Very good. Mildly age toned with staple hole at upper left. Headlined "Speech by Dr. Ray Lyman Wilbur Secretary of the Interior at the first annual Lincoln Day Dinner of the National Capital Republican Club Friday evening February 12 1932 Willard Hotel Washington D.C." Wilbur signs in full large and bold in blue ink across the top. A rousing patriotic talk near the end of Hoover's term in office with the Depression bearing down closing with: "We are on our way to repeat the election of 1864. People then talked and talked and then began to think and think and voted that Abraham Lincoln should stay in office just as they will do for Herbert Hoover." Could he have been more wrong Hoover of course lost to FDR in a landslide the following November 8. Quite unusual. unknown

Shanghai.: 上海教育出版社. Shanghai Education Publishing House. 1988. Complete set of 18 coloured posters to accompany Volume 7 of the Chinese language course textbook for Year 6 students. Mostly 52.5 x 76.5cm some 38 x 52.5cm. All stamped with the name of a school "Jiading Town Second Central Primary School Materials Room" on reverse. Occasional foxing to reverse pin-tack holes and slight staining to some edges. Upper corners of Number 17 is chipped with some loss and previous cello-tape repairs. Colours in images of all posters are clear and bright and overall in good condition. Brief captions in simplified Chinese characters. The set of posters includes a wide variety of images from Lenin with soldiers to illustrations of animals and from illustrations of stories from the past to one of a modern high rise building. Of particular interest is picture 18 with a three-generation one-child family happily taking delivery of a new fridge in a high rise apartment with children's toys fresh flowers and a large TV all part of the scene. Octavo pp 14 373 11 with two engraved folding plates a little age-toning and slight marking rear endpaper a little marked and with a contemporary signature - R. Taylor 1771. The front endpaper has an ink diagram see our illustration and the hinge at the title page is cracked but sound. An early signature has been carefully cut from the top of the title page - the engraved surface is not affected. Contemporary panelled calf a little marked and worn the spine more worn the upper joint cracking at the top and bottom. Blanche Henrey 709. Little is known about Bradley's childhood aside from an early interest in gardening and the fact that he lived in the vicinity of London a city at the time with many amateur naturalists. Though Bradley lacked a university education his first publication Treatise of Succulent Plants gained him traction with influential patrons like James Petiver and later Hans Sloane. With their support he was proposed and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1712 at the age of 24. Two years later Bradley visited the Netherlands and took an interest in horticulture. He spent the next decade back in England writing treatises on topics related to this central interest like weather fertiliser productivity and plant hybridisation. In recognition of his work in the field and with the thereafter unfulfilled promise that he would found and fund a university botanical garden the University of Cambridge named Bradley its first professor of botany in 1724 a position he would hold until his death. As Bradley was not a wealthy man in his later life and as this was an unsalaried position the newly minted academic continued to focus most of his efforts on making a living through publishing. According to his rival and successor John Martyn as well as his successor son Thomas Martyn Bradley did this at the expense of his students whom he reportedly neglected to even lecture to. Bradley made notable innovations and discoveries across a wide array of disciplines. For example this work included directions for the making and use of a rudimentary kaleidoscope to aid in formal garden design and layout. He also wrote about cooking and was the first to publish recipes in the English language using the then-exotic pineapple as the main ingredient. His History of Succulent plants was the seminal treatise on the topic and his studies of tulips and auriculas helped further accurate theories of plant reproduction. Bradley was also a pioneer in the examining of fungal spore germination and the pollination of plants by insects. His publications additionally contained information on how to build and use greenhouses early theories regarding agricultural productivity and pond ecology. First Edition. Full-Leather. Good. B.
