‎HIALEAH FLORIDA MIAMI-DADE COUNTY FL USA. Good. 1929. On offer is an interesting original 1929 manuscript diary handwritten by Evelyn M. Taylor of Hialeah Florida as stated in embossed gilt stamp then "Worthy Matron 1929. Hialeah Chapter No. 153 O. E. S." denoting her achievement to the highest position in her chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Our Worthy Matron who was born about 1900 and was married to Henry Taylor uses a five year diary as a page-a-day book and does a super job as a diarist with less than a dozen days without entries and even a casual reader cannot fail to note that Evelyn's life revolves around the OES and her family. Here are some snippets: 1929 "January 1st - 3rd My officers were appointed and our instillation is to be on my Birthday for which I am very proud. Anna to preside during instillation…. Sister Angie Jameson Mauk acting as Marshall. Sister Dora Reynolds as Chaplain and Sister Mabel Ramey as organist. I thank them all….I thank my chapter for the high honor they have given me and hope that I shall never prove myself unworthy of their trust…." "January 10th My first blue day this year. Everything seemed to go wrong. Did nothing of any interest." "February 12th Held chapter. Had a nice meeting with lots of visitors. Chapter gave me the first honor as their worthy matron by voting to bear my dinner exp. the night of Grand Matron's visit. All officers present except Ruth." "February 13th. Grand Matrons first visit to Naranja. Ruben Mary Erma Henry papa and I went to Naranja Chapter. G. M. official visit. ‎SAVANNAH GREENVILLE BEAUFORT GEORGIA. Good. 1851. On offer is a charming though on the dark side original pre-Civil War ornate black leather friendship book from the pre-Confederate South with entries dated 1851 to 1858. The "Sacred Album" was a gift to a young woman named Miss Maria L. Baker presented to her early 1850 by a Sister Mary Ann as inscribed on the front flyleaf. The book is a bit of an enigma; we note a rather poignant and touching personal poem penned by brother William concerning the loss of his sister among the first entries in 1851. We also note an entry referencing the death of 'Annie L.' Was William Maria's brother Perhaps Annie was their sibling and the book deals with the family's sorrow and grief Here is William's poem: "Thou too art gone thou loved and lovely one! Whom youth and youth's affections bound to me; What is our being Thou hast ceased to be! Nor staid to welcome here thy brother home Who mourns o'er land which we no more shall see - Wouldst they had never been or were to come! Wouldst he had ne'er returned to find fresh cause to roam Oh! Ever loving lovely and beloved! Come selfish sorrow ponder on the past; And cling to thought's soon better removed But time shall tear thy shadow from me last. Oct 2nd 1851 William." The book is a beautiful collection of poems somber and sorrowful tributes by various individuals all handwritten from Savannah Greenville Beaufort Ocala etc. All 34 handwritten entries in the 53 page book have beautiful period calligraphy. The "Sacred Album" was a popular blank book in the early and mid 19th Century especially among young women. Friends would pen in selected poetry and sometimes their own original pieces. The entries frequently reflect deep spiritual sentiments and often addressed the meaning of true and enduring friendship. Hardbound in original black boards with ornate blindstamp borders and vignette. Beautiful and elaborate gilt ornamentation on both front and back panels with a gilt depiction of Christ on the back panel. 6¼ x 7 ½ inches. ‎1833 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT SHIP'S LOG OF A 155 DAY VOYAGE FROM THE PACIFIC COAST OF MEXICO TO NEW YORK CITY‎

‎SHIP MCLELLAN MAZATLAN TO NEW YORK. Good. 1833. On offer is a fascinating original 1833 logbook for the Ship McLellan later purchased in 1846 and refitted as a whaling ship from Mazatlan on the Pacific coast of Mexico to New York City. The volume is dated March 6 1833 to August 8th 1833. The 8 x 13 inch book produced specifically for the trade states: "Published and Sold by E. & G. W. Blunt 154 Water-street corner of Maiden-lane where is constantly for sale a complete assortment of the most approved Charts Nautical Books and Instruments. Nautical instruments Repaired. / June 1827". A lovely woodcut illustration of an American Clipper Ship under full sail graces the cover. While unknown the author the log has 74 pre-printed pages of charts to be filled in and all 74 pages have been used with a loose leaf tucked in at the end for August 4th through August 8th thus completing the entire journey from Mazatlan to New York. Typical of a log kept by the First Mate or Captain the log details all the technical data; daily charts contain information on positions weather currents longitude and latitude wind direction and force and the various sails used. Fairly extensive use is also made of the blank space provided to make longhand notations regarding the passage of the McLellan. The writer also uses this space to note both the daily and whole "distance run". The odd note regarding particular currents off the River Plata or meetings with other vessels and the gossip punctuate the journal. Here are some snippets: On March 6 1833 The Ship McLellan departs Mazatlan bound for New York. ".with the assistance of the Ship of War Rattlesnake crew got our anchor without difficulty. The three Marias Isles at meridian were to the northward of us from 15 to 25 miles." Distance run the first day: 100 miles. On April 7 1833: ".spoke whaling ship Amethist of Nantucket - 70 days out with 300 blls. of sperm oil - reports 80 ships in the neighborhood upon the same business but with indifferent success." On June 20 1833: ".unusual quantities of whales seen for these 2 days." and on July 4th the McLellan crosses the equator having been out for 121 days and run 11262 miles. On Thursday August 7 1833 ".at 6 took a pilot at 10 came to anchor outside the bar - at 8 a.m. wind N.W. weigh anchor and made sail - Friday at 1 p.m. having worked almost up to the narrows was taken in tow by a steam boat and came to anchor at Querantine at 4; Subjected to 48 hours Querantine". This ends the 155 day 14038 mile voyage of the McLellan." The covers are intact and are comprised of marbled paperboard. Overall VG. HISOTRICAL NOTES: one online source provides: Samuel W. Comstock started in the trading business in 1833 on the Ship McLellan with a cargo shipped by G. G . & S. Howland later Howland & Aspinwall consigned to S.W. Comstock supercargo on board "for Valparaiso and a market." ‎Toronto Ontario Canada. Good with no dust jacket. 1913. Softcover. On offer is the 1913 coming-of-age diary of Gordon Westover Doolittle 1891-1972 of Toronto. Gordon was the son of prominent Canadian Dr. Perry Ernest Doolittle 1861-1933 a surgeon whose true love was transportation. Dr. Doolittle was well-known as the “King of Canadian Roads” and the “Father of the Trans-Canada Highway”. While our diarist did not achieve his father’s level of notoriety his diary exposes a deeply sensitive flawed and glaringly intelligent young man. Through his words the reader is transported back to early 20th Century Toronto in all its pre-war glory. BIO NOTES on Gordon and Percy Doolittle can be found at the end of this summary. Gordon Doolittle kept this diary August 27 through November 7 1913 while he was a second year arts student at the University of Toronto where he pledged Phi Delta Theta. During this time Gordon was coping with challenges in the dating department intense academics pondering the meaning of friendship and taking the lead in beginning a social club. He treats his diary like a friend and writes honestly and regularly. In his first entry he has just returned from a summer working construction on the Transcontinental Railroad in Grant Ontario which is now a ghost town. The next day his entry introduces us to one of the many women in his life. An excerpt follows: “.called on Helen Jackson…We had a fine talk together and at last Helen realizes that I will always feel the same toward her as a brother so we celebrated the fifth anniversary of our fraternity” Aug 28 1913. On August 30 Gordon begins talking about Doris a young woman for whom he pines throughout his diary and who repeatedly rejects his romantic overtones. Excerpts follow: “Doris came home to-day from Prouts Neck…she refused to let me hold her hand and says she must remain an ice box for some time to come” Aug 30 1913. “Doris tried to teach me to do the new dance on the verandah but I do not approve. We danced all evening…Doris objected to seeing me smoking cigarettes…” Sept 6 1913. “.I went down to see Doris and she told me I was not to speak to her or think of her as more than a friend. I wrote and told her that I would not speak but that I could not help thinking and said that my journals this summer were written to her as more than a friend they were wrong for her to have them and that I would like Irene to have them as she shared my love…” Sept 17 1913. “My life has not been very good. Up till three days ago I have smoked. Doris then found out called me a Hypocrit sic and a coward and called off any idea of mine as to more than friendship. I have decided to do Gods will and prove that I am a man and work hard” Nov 8 1913. In late September Gordon begins to focus on the proposal and eventual development of a Social Culture Club he wants to form through the university. Its founding members will be Gordon and his friends. Meetings will be held at his home 619 Sherbourne Street and members are required to agree to a club constitution and give “serious consideration” to the club’s monthly discussion topics. The club would discuss “literature music art religion experiences athletics”. He records their first meeting in early October. In between discussing his studies his love life his social life and his future plans Gordon inadvertently writes a love letter to Toronto dropping in references to places and events that would make any modern-day Torontonian nostalgic. Excerpts follow: “.went out to the Exhibition we had a fine time…we took in the midway and I was nearly sick.saw the grandstand performance…” Sept 2 1913. “.we walked down to the Metropolitan and walked home…we took the car to Reservoir Park and walked to her place for tea…took Doris to church at St. Paul’s…” Sept 7 1913. “Florence drove me downtown to the Royal Alexandra and we saw ‘The Blindness of Virtue’ a fine play on the dangers of not telling children the truth about sexual relations. We walked home. ” Sept 13 1913. “I took Doris to the Strand then tea at Brown Betty. We called for a dress at Eatons and walked home” Oct 11 1913. A particularly touching component of Gordon’s diary is that he transcribes letters he writes for his memories. Notably he spends six pages transcribing a letter that he wrote to his best friend Lillah Worthington on the topic of friendship. He composed the letter to give to her to read while she was on a train headed to Cleveland on holiday. A short excerpt follows: “They say one is judged by his friends and this must be because our character is shown by the choice we make as it is indeed shown by all our actions and what a choice we have! Fat ones thin ones good or bad we can really have any kind of friends we like…” Sept 11 1913. While Gordon only writes for a few months a very fulsome picture of this 21-22 year old man emerges as does a picture of the beautiful city that was his playground. This diary is a gem as it is rare to find male diarists who give so much detail about their feelings and flaws. This journal measures 8.25 inches by 4.25 inches and contains 44 pages. It is 100% complete. The cover is a heavier paper and is in good condition. There is some light staining around the edges. The binding is coming loose but remains mostly in tact and all the pages are in good condition. The handwriting is legible. Overall G. BIO NOTES: Gordon Westover Doolittle: Born September 29 1891 Gordon was a graduate of the St. Andrew’s College Cadet Corps. He attended the University of Toronto and graduated with an Arts degree in 1916. During his tenure at U of T Gordon enlisted in the Canadian Army during World War I. He served in England as a part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force with the Eaton Armoured Car Battery. Following university Gordon worked for Burroughs Adding Machine Co and later with Geo. B Williams selling real estate and insurance in Toronto. He spent time in Britain and married Anne Muriel Lake Doolittle 1890-1952 there in 1916. While there he joined the Great Britain Royal Aero Club Aviators’. He held the title of Lietenant in the Royal Flying Corps. Back in Toronto Anne and Gordon lived in the borough of East York at 22 Glebeholme Avenue. Existing records do not show any children born to the couple. Doolittle also constructed the nation's first motorcycle and it was his deep interest in riding his creations that made him such a strong advocate for improved roads. Doolittle became an even stronger advocate of good roads and with a few friends established the Toronto Automobile Club forerunner of the modern CAA. In addition to advocating what would become years later the Trans-Canada Highway and a uniform set of traffic regulations from coast-to-coast Doolittle was also largely responsible for officials in British Columbia New Brunswick Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island changing their respective province's basic rule of the road from "keep to the left" to "keep to the right." By doing so as Doolittle kept pointing out they too could take advantage of the money being spent by touring American automobile drivers. Being this was her senior year and she was a popular student with many friends and activities we note her sorority and social life were a whirlwind all while she studied Russian history. Of some small note she was an extra in the filming of the INTRUDER IN THE DUST movie written by William Faulkner. It was a scene filmed in Oxford. ‎MOBILE ALABAMA 1846. On offer is a super original significant 1846 autographed pair 2 of manuscript stampless letters dated Mobile Alabama handwritten by John B. Toulmin to Abraham Bell & Son New York City. The business letters from one of the leading cotton factors in 19th Century Mobile Alabama exemplify the importance of the cotton trade shows the international nature of cotton and how a receivable from New York City even in 1846 could affect claims in Mobile a commercial town filled lawyers factors merchants and professionals serving the cotton trade's needs. Mobile in the 1840s was the second busiest cotton port after New Orleans. It was also an important slave trade center. The primary letter from Toulmin to Bell & Son and the second is a copy of another letter involving the same topic between two lawyers. Written in haste a bit of a challenge; here are snippets: "By Mail P. Paid Mobile Decm 1: 1846 Messrs A. Bell & Son 12/8 Dear Sirs There is a quick introductory statement about a sight draft and 200 bales of cotton Toulmin then says "There is again no Eastern Mail." A specific mail carried east by steamship He mentions a "copy of a letter to Hiram Barney Esq. New - York." Another letter has been appended to this one "It explains itself. For the benefit of my Estate I wish to Purchase the claim on Austill Jeremiah Austill 1794-1881 was an Alabama folk hero who as a 19 year participated in the Canoe Fight with the Creeks in 1813 and was the night courier between the forts in the Creek Country. He later was a merchant planter county clerk and state Representative and Senator. if it be had for a trifle like many ante-bellum Americans Toulmin is trying to make money by buying debt If Robert Hamilton controls the claim likely a merchant in NYC perhaps you can ascertain and inform me where he is to be found. I learn that he is in but cannot tell where. He was formerly of New York I am Dear sirs Resp lly yours J.B. Toulmin". The second letter is on the next page and listed as "Copy" "Mobile Nov 25 1846 Hiram Barney Esq. Hiram Barney 1811-1895 was born in Henderson New York and graduated from Union College in 1834. He was an active lawyer in New York City for many years and an abolitionist leader. He ran for Congress on the Anti-Slavery ticket in 1840 and was a Presidential Elector for the Free Soil Party in 1848 and was a delegate to the Republican National conventions in 1856 and 1860. Barney met privately with Abraham Lincoln in Springfield after the nomination representing New York interests in Cabinet appointments. I presume upon the acquaintance that has arisen through our brief correspondence both are lawyers to ask a professional favor. If it result in ascertaining that nothing can be done it will give you very little trouble. If it to useful results we can secure you a reasonable fee. Hamilton & Cole not identified of your city took the benefit of the general bankrupt law in New York. Jeremiah Austill see above of our city owed them a large sum I think $8000.00 or more ------ But Messrs Hamilton & Cole previous to the assignment by the bank had made an assignment in New York to one Robert Hamilton in trust for their creditors Robert Hamilton not known if related to Hamilton & Cole has bought debts owed to H & C for less than face value hoping to get more monies when paid by creditors Whether Austill's debt was then assigned is not certain. Now will you ascertain 1.Was Austill's debt contained in the schedule in bankruptcy -- Is it was 2. Was it sold at the assignors sale and who was the purchaser If it was sold then we wish to buy up the claim provided it can be obtained for a small sum. The author John Butler Toulmin 1788-1860 was an English immigrant who followed his two older brothers to America. Harry Toulmin 1766-1823 became the 2nd Kentucky Secretary of State and later 2nd Superior Court Judge for the Tombigbee District in Mississippi 1804-1819. Mathew C. Toulmin 1776-1818 died in Mobile. John B. Toulmin suffered a number of financial reverses before succeeding as a Commission Merchant. He traveled to Britain at least 30 times and in fact died in England. Note Bell and Toulmin maintained close relations with their home country which benefited both who dealt in an international commodity. 2. The addressee A. Bell & Son was a company formed in 1844. Abraham Bell 1778-1856 was an Irish Quaker who immigrated to the United States c.1804 and built a large shipping and commission merchant business in New York City focusing on cotton. He maintained close ties with traders in Belfast Dublin Liverpool and London and was active in carrying Irish immigrants in the 1840s escaping the ravages of the potato famine. Bell business paper archives are at several repositories including SUNY-Albany; University of Michigan; Winterthur in Delaware and the New York Historical Society. Overall G. Lashway sometimes Jack a Pleasant Valley New York hunter who extensively details a pair of disparate trips in 1966: caribou and moose in Newfoundland Canada and antelope in Wyoming. BIO NOTE: Research suggests that this is almost undoubtedly Jack Lashway a noted wildlife artist. The trip to Newfoundland about 60% 58 pages of the very large 14 x 11 x 2.5 inch album mostly in the Cornerbrook area hosted by Bill Newell Guide and Outfitters whose services he is quite enamored of is the more detailed trip as the photos are almost all original and Jack has written 20 pages in a diary like manner as if to be readied for publication. The Wyoming trip about 32 pages has postcards rather than original photos and no manuscript narrative. Filled with 80 or so black and white photos some missing as evidenced by empty corner mounts 60 postcards and quite a few ephemeral items such as non-resident hunting licenses and tags hunting regulation booklets brochures maps letters from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Mines Agriculture and Resources about obtaining hunting permits plus many handwritten pages of his recalled accounts and details of his road trip. He writes a very detailed account his daily activities including mileage places he stayed hotels motels camps people he met along and problems he had along the way making for very interesting reading. ‎CALERA ALABAMA SHELBY COUNTY 1897. On offer is a fascinating original late 19th Century Calera Alabama manuscript letter handwritten by L. W. Beard of editor of the newsletter The Sunny Southland 'A Weekly Immigration Paper' published in Shelby County Alabama promoting Northern farmers as 'colonists' and 'settlers' to Alabama. The two page letter dated August 27 1897 is addressed to Thomas Scott of Montgomery. Scott and his family were prominent in the Alabama Republican party at the time and were also big land owners throughout Alabama. The letter provides significant insight into the machinations of enticing his primary target for immigrants as Beard writes Scott asking him to find 10000 acres or more of well watered stock land suitable for dairy farming good soil on clay foundation elevated sufficient to be well drained moderately priced for dairy cattle and other purposes near the L&N Railroad line between Mobile & New Orleans. Beard intended to parcel it out to new settlers. He clearly outlines his preferences and that the land must be 'healthful all year locality for Northern farmers!' Overall G. ‎1966 ORIGINAL GROUP OF MANUSCRIPT AND TYPED LETTERS REGARDING A NOTORIOUS DOUBLE MURDER AND ATTEMPTED SUICIDE IN MOBILE ALABAMA IN THE 1940s‎

‎1966. On offer is a fascinating group of manuscript letters and ephemera 18 pages relating to a circa 1960s double homicide murder case in Mobile Alabama involving a well-known barber the prison warden a lawyer and a doctor. The letters provide unique insight with three letters received by Dr. O.L. Chason; two are from: Seale Marsal Seale & Duke Lawyers 1st letter dated Dec. 27th the 2nd letter May 11th 1967 3rd letter is from: John M McKee of the Rehabilitation Research Foundation in Elmore Alabama dated February 1st 1967; a correspondence copy from Dr O.L. Chason typed copy to Dr. John McKee dated January 5th 1966 two page copy to Mr. Harry Seale dated February 6th three page letter by O.L. Chason on letterhead to Harry Seale Dated February 6th 1967 including three page draft; typed copy of three page letter from John M Mckee to O.L. Chason; finally a handwritten seven page draft to Dr John McKee about Foy Wheeler on small stationary sample from Raleigh W. Shamrock Rep. Gulf State Sales Corp. Mobile Alabama. Much of the tale involving 'The Barber The Doctor The Lawyer Mr Lee and the Double Murder in Mobile County Alabama' is told in the handwritten letter to Dr Mckee by Dr. O.L. Chason letter January 5th 1966. The letter is about the research paper Mckee had done on a survey of prisoners in state pen given life in Mobile co. and a question about Foy Wheeler a childhood acquaintance. Foy was a successful barber that Dr Chason patronized. In 1935-1945 Foy moved his establishment to the Hotel Battle Ship around the time war started. Chason talks about how successful Foy was as barber hunter fisherman and how Foy would like to boast about his skills. Then goes into talk about the double murder. How Foy had been drinking a good bit.then talked about the fateful day how his wife and sister had been picking or nagging him and how Foy walked over picked up the shotgun and killed both of them and then placed the barrel under his chin and tried to kill himself. Someone had heard the shots form outside and came running in. Foy's wounds were not fatal. Then letter goes on to say how Dr. Chason could not imagine Foy as a positive aggressive murderer. Foy's action where more out of desperation than planned or calculated. And also how he felt that alcohol also played a factor. The letter then goes on to say Seale wanted Chason to testify on Foy's behalf. But how Chason did not feel qualified to do so. He just was pointing out that he did not think it was a calculated murder and that it should be considered for more study by qualified person. Chason then states how Seale was disappointed because he had never had a client sentenced to death before. Did not feel that Foy could be seen as a first degree murder. Foy himself counts himself as a victim that had to take drastic step to a solution of his household problem. Seale does not think it was deliberate plan. Chason goes on to say Foy may be dead by now or may still need punishment. But how he was wanting to see if people doing the study understand his actions and then goes to request a reply. The letter dated February 1 1967 Dear Dr. Chason from Dr. John Mckee states: 'Delighted to hear from you after so many years. Spoke with Mr. A. Frank Lee of the Commission of Correction in regards to Foy Wheeler. Found out Mr Wheeler is a kind a gentle man and does a fine job barbering and adjusting to prison life. With him being in Atmore it is difficult for me to check in on him. Mr Lee states he knows Wheeler personally and Lee states that a murder like the one he committed occurs once in a lifetime. The description that you gave about him being nagged into it by two females would fit the picture quite adequately. Mr Lee further states that Foy will probably get out of prison within a reasonable length of time. Also suggest Chason write parole board on Wheeler's behalf. On offer is a very interesting circa 1840s notebook of James Lee a pro-Temperance likely English physician who has in his book written a speech called "The Physiological Action of Alcohol" and an essay called "At the North Pole" which may or may not be based on his first hand knowledge; 70 pages and 56 pages respectively. The essay is a vast description of the Arctic from the peoples to the formative creations of ice and rock and within the essay he opines and observes his ideas as to the Creator and the making of the vast wilderness to paraphrase. At the back of the premium gilt stamped marbled edge book is an 8 page section used surgical operations diary a few cases details of particular fascination are two cases involving poisoning by different methods and the results of treatment and some medicinal recipes. ‎1870s ORIGINAL GROUP OF FOUR 4 PARTIAL MANUSCRIPT LETTERS OF LIFE DEATH AND THE LEGACY OF HER HUSBAND‎

‎LOWER PEACH TREE WILCOX COUNTY ALABAMA LOWNDES ASH 1874. On offer is an interesting group of three 3 partial letters and one 1 complete 12 pages in all dated c1870s Lower Peach Tree Alabama. Two of the letters are addressed to 'Dear Sisters' who we believe are Mary and Sarah McLauchlin. The others addressed to Annie. The author is we believe the wife Kate of Archibald 'Archie' McLauchlin whose correspondence we list separately Seller Id# 0002376 passed away sometime in late 1875 or 1876. Archie who had done a good job keeping in touch with his siblings would have been pleased that his wife carried on and kept her sisters-in-law 'in the loop' as to the farm and schools and their important 'scholars' for whose success Archibald was responsible. Specifically the letters are: 1. Oct 11 1874 four pages Dear Annie Archie's niece refers to him getting treatment in Jackson Wells among local news; 2. October 9th 1875 four pages incomplete refers to Mr. McLauchlin's death; August 23 1879 two pages incomplete. The three letters while incomplete present a picture of life for the author teaching farming and holding the threads of her husband's and by extension her family's life. We note she refers to Archie as Mr. McLauchlin a few times as in Mr. McLauchlin going to hear General Morgan speak or to Mr. McLauchlin's death or to Mr. McLauchlin's treatment. Besides the details of her husband there are all the local catchup on the schools farm and events. We note a super passage about a house on fire the efforts to save the structure and how a Negro boy of nine carried more buckets than any one man and much more. Mr. Deskins attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville Tennessee and then later Elon College in North Carolina where it appears he earned a doctorate and eventually became the head of the History Department in 1947.
