‎1921 - 1935 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF 15 MANUSCRIPT DIARIES DETAILING THE EDUCATION OF A WORLD WAR I VETERAN WHO WILL ONE DAY HEAD THE HISTORY DEPARTMENT AT ELON COLLEGE IN NORTH CAROLINA‎

‎VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY ELON COLLEGE NORTH CAROLINA. Good. 1921. On offer is an interesting archive of 15 consecutive years 1921 - 1935 of manuscript diaries handwritten by S.C. Deskins Stuart Columbus. Mr. Deskins attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville Tennessee and then later Elon College in North Carolina where it appears he earned a doctorate and eventually became the head of the History Department in 1947. We list separately his early school notebooks studying Church history Education Philosophy etc.#0001951 Having served in World War I Stuart we note enigmatically that the earlier diaries are written in German then evolve to English and German and he never really stops using some simple German when for example he writes 'Zu Haus' but English entries otherwise. The diaries are not expressions of personal thoughts but follow his education experience at Vanderbilt and Elon very closely. ‎1920 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF NOTED ABSTRACT ARTIST ROGER HILTON'S MOTHER‎

‎NORTHWOOD LONDON ENGLAND ST IVES CORNWALL. Good. 1920. On offer is a densely written manuscript diary dated 1920 handwritten by Louisa Holdsworth Sampson mother of artist Roger Hilton. Besides being a lovely account of daily life in a middle class family during the years immediately after the World War I in 1920 there is insight into the early life of Roger when he was still a child. The book does not provide identification but this diary came from a larger archive providing provenance. A total of 220 pages the largish page a day diary is over seventy percent full. Hilton came by his artistic abilities honestly as his mother trained as a painter at the Slade School where Hilton also studied 1929-31. BIO NOTES: One online source: Roger Hilton CBE 1911 - 1975 was a pioneer of abstract art in post-war Britain. He was born in 1911 in Northwood London and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art London under Henry Tonks and also in Paris where he developed links with painters on the Continent. In World War II he served in the Army part of the time as a Commando for about three years being a prisoner of war after the Dieppe raid of 1942. He worked as a schoolteacher for a time after the war also teaching at Central School of Arts and Crafts 1954-56. During the 1950s and 1960s Hilton began to spend more time in west Cornwall moving there permanently in 1965. In the same year he married Rose Phipps 20 years his junior having divorced his first wife Ruth David. He became a prominent member of the St. Ives School and gained an international reputation. He won the 1963 John Moores Painting Prize and was appointed CBE in 1968. By 1974 he was confined to bed as an invalid precipitated in part by alcoholism. His work became less abstract in his later years often being based on the nude or images of animals. He died at Botallack not far from St Ives in 1975. ‎San Francisco CA: San Francisco Fire Department. Very Good. 1914. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This is a large framed group of ephemera - with information to be used by firemen in the course of their duties. The latest date on this material is July 1914. The frame is in very nice clean condition and is somewhat unusual in it's makeup - with screws and slats on the rear so it can be opened basically this frame is in the manor of a bulletin board which can be updated without too much difficulty . Inside the frame are five sheets of paper which have been notated with different tables including: SFFD Preliminary Comp. Calls & S. G. Signals Tapping & Clearance Drills for Various Taps Diameters of Drills Powers & Roots of Numbers SFFD Names and Locations of Apparatuses Standard Telegraph Code information and two sheets underneath which aren't really visible. "On July 11 1912 a unique contest was conducted in the presence of Chief Murphy the Fire Commissioners the Fire Committee of the Board of Supervisors and a large attending crowd. A newly designed motor drawn apparatus the Nott Motor Engine was to be pitted against the finest horse drawn rig in the Department. The object of the contest was to determine the swiftest and most efficient of the two. The start of the race was from Second Avenue & Clement Street the old house of Twenty-six Engine. At the sound of the gong the horses leaped into their collars and charged out the door smoke already belching from the steamer. The driver of the Nott Motor Engine cranked his machine and was quickly in pursuit. His objective was the hydrant at Thirteenth and Lake Streets. He made it in 2 minutes and 20 seconds and the crew had water out the nozzle in a total elapsed time of 3 minutes and 40 seconds. The foam flecked horses drew up to their hydrant at Eleventh and Lake in 3 minutes and 55 seconds with water flowing in 5 minutes and 6 seconds. Everyone knew what the results meant. The days of the horses had passed and after this time none were purchased for Fire Department use. In 1903 the first electric auto had been purchased for the Chief and three more were bought in 1905 but they proved unreliable and none were in service at the time of the Fire. The first motor driven apparatus was installed in Chemical Company No. 3 on Bush Street in 1912. In March of the next year the first auto-driven steam engine was installed at Engine Company Twenty-eight Stockton and Greenwich Streets." from the SFFD historical page . Number 5 has a little insect damage to wrappers and lower edges near spine with minor repairs made with archival washi paper else in good condition. This influential magazine was established by Soong Ching-ling in 1949. Border 1. Head-title and shoulder-notes in red. 10-line and numerous 6- and one 4-line woodblock initial capitals all designed by Morris engraved by William Harcourt Hooper. <p>Cavendish was an usher in Wolsey's household between 1526 and 1530 and he wrote this book around 1557. It wasn't printed until a century later but many manuscript copies of it had been handed around so it was well-known. The first printed copy appeared in 1641 taken from one imperfect ms. Morris's aim was to put a more perfect text in print taken from the author's autograph manuscript in the British Library and edited by F.S. Ellis. It makes fascinating reading with detailed insights into Wolsey's character and lowly beginnings.<p>"One special point of interest about it is that it presents us with the first separate biography in the English language. But for it we should have but a very imperfect idea of one of the most remarkable figures in English history. Crossings out and corrections. Lateral fold to left margin but light. The manuscript was for the “elite"" which is to say the readers of Canard enchaîné but was eventually published in La Belle époque 1980. A fine article promoting the Olympia concert of a young Paul Anka 17 at the time more than ten years before the global success of My Way. Incidentally Boris Vian made the ""American star"" a little older than his actual years: "" Paul Anka is a boy of 20 who writes his own songs and sings them"". Vian himself a songwriter and musician nonetheless points out: ""Since he has not written dozens and dozens of songs he also sings other people's for example 'Jingle Bells' because it's winter and Christmas."" Vian insists on the snobbery of the Parisian public that is obviously less receptive to American innovations: ""Paul Anka the evening of the premiere had a triumph with the 'people' which chilled the stalls composed of knowing stars semi-stars demi-stars and the usual suspects at such occasions."" Vian then responds point by point to the singer's detractors singing his praises. ""He sings very well and seems able to 'swing' in the Latin way.He has an excellent presence and almost too much craft for his age.He has far fewer 'airs' than one might have feared given his sales and publicity."" Very aware of new American musicians Boris risks a little bit of judgement without losing his legendary humor in keeping with the caustic tone of Canard enchaîné : ""He is thus a classic singer when he wants to be and unfortunately Anka is to be regarded well above the Kalin twins those two awful monkeys and the grimacing Presley whom we saw at the cinema."" As the title of this article indicated ""A recommendation for a revision"" Boris Vian seems to have changed his mind about the young singer after attending his French premiere. In another article planned for Canard enchaîné and written a little while earlier he had declared: ""You clearly know the latest nickname for the young singer Paul Anka 'the Canadian bawler. Top spine end skillfully restored and redecorated. Title page mounted as well as the first page of the foreword. Remnants of adhesive between the endpaper page and the title page. Good fresh paper except on the pages of the epistle. A beautiful copy. The author a Capuchin monk by the name of Justinien de Tours he will have another pen name lived for a long time in the Middle East and took many trips within the Turkish provinces. The work proposes to set the scene of the Turkish Empire's decadence and of its unrest. Pages ever so slightly yellowed but clean. 116 pages. SIGNED BY AUTHOR on free front page "SINCERELY GLENN MILLER" in black fountain pen. Stamp on upper right hand corner of ffp "Property of Jan Grover and his Orchestra" a Canadian bandleader of the era. INCLUDED ARE much sought after 2 MUSICAL SCORE loosely inserted in book: "I'M THRILLED" with stamp "Best Music Company" and "SONG OF THE VOLGA BOATMEN". Both scores are in extremely good condition with some yellowing. B&W photographs and many musical arrangements. No dust jacket as issued. Book issued one year before his untimely death.
