Ke was accused as spy and was locked up during the Yan'an Rectification Movement in 1942. <br> <br>Issue no. 2 of 红旗 "Red Flag" features a speech delivered by Premier Zhou Enlai on 15 August 1967 criticising Liu Shaoqi. This non-chronological commemorative scrapbook documenting Mao's life includes colour and black and white photographs of Chairman Mao line illustrations pen and ink paintings and photographs of sculptures of Mao all clipped from newspapers or magazines and carefully laid down into this sturdy accounts book. Images date from 1925 to 1976. One full pull-out page from a pictorial magazine is interleaved. Most images include captions from the newspaper short news article or in some cases handwritten captions. Pages and images are slightly browned but well preserved cover is slightly chipped at edges overall in good condition. Circa 90pp 21.2 x 19cm. 1755. Good. 1 handwritten vellum indenture 22 x 30.5 inches folded to 10 x 6 inches. Ornate armorial initial letter with motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" in the garter. Blue 6 penny stamp in margin. One engraved revenue stamp on exterior with "101" in the upper right-hand corner. On Sept. 5 1755 William Anne Holles Earl of Essex 1732-1799 leased to John Minn of Little Fransham Norfolk County yeoman several small tracts of farmland including a pasture called Oxmere in Little Fransham of about 10 acres. Signed at the lower edge "Essex" with his seal. Signed by the witness on the outside: Francois Gonin. In Good Condition: 2 horizontal folds and 3 vertical folds; old dampstains along one edge and at 2 junctures of folds have resulted in reduced legibility in those locations and minor loss at one juncture; otherwise clean and crisp. unknown

British Isles: c. 1810. Fine condition. A charming and rare original early 19th watercolor painting of a Butterfly. Gouache on China paper mounted onto Cornish & Bond Extra London Board. 7.25 x 7.5 inches 184 x 190 mm. The mounted painting has been tipped onto ecru board of the period yet the colors remain vibrant and rich. Although the artist of this brilliant study remains unknown his or her technique and refined skill at handling this challenging medium is evident. An exacting eye and subtle use of color were the hallmarks of a trained student. During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the art of natural history painting was an essential and favored skill for all well-bred gentlewomen. Clearly painted by an impassioned and experienced "armchair naturalist" who sought inspitation from the pletheral of bound volumes documenting the natural world of the day. This richly illustrated advertisement flyer for the chrysanthemum doll displays at the Hanayashiki Amusement Park in Asakusa features various scenes from famous kabuki plays First Sino-Japanese War battles and a fairy tale Momotaro Peach Boy. Human figures made out of chrysanthemum flowers were placed in various dioramas. In addition various animal and bird figures including lions peacocks and pelicans are created using the flowers. Conjoined triptych of ink and watercolour woodblock prints trimmed to the margins together 35 x 63.3 cms backed onto Japanese scrap paper with some writing title and descriptive cartouches top right red censor's stamp lower left and artist's signature lower right some paper abrasions wear at the joins slight bleeding of ink and offsetting on the verso but overall in good condition. Vivid depiction of the Battle of Seonghwan also known as the battle of Asan in Korea July 29 1894 the first major land battle on of the Sino-Japanese War 1894-1895. Chinese troops are seen fleeing the charging Japanese marines and the silhouettes of airborn casualties are depicted in the bright orange explosion. <br> <br>Yōsai Nobukazu 1872-1944 was active towards the very end of the ukiyo-e period when the popular days of this style were over. Printmakers like Yōsai struggled and he survived as an artist by depicting the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars. Yōshū Chikanobu was his teacher active 1838-1912 and Yōsai Nobukazu was considered his best student. The majority of his prints were triptychs of battles of the Sino-Japanese war. There were practically no examples of democracy in the history known to the Chevalier apart from the Classical democracies of Greece and Rome which had been experiments only in very elitist forms of democracy. These were very well known to this political scientist whose papers contain 7000 pages dedicated to the history of the Classical world. The republic ushered in by the Revolution was more than just a political system it was the realization of a philosophical political ideal. And while most of those opposed to the new regime saw in it above all a threat to their personal situations their religious beliefs or even more simply their habits the writings of the Chevalier de Sade show no such dogmatic influence; or at least he never uses dogma to justify his arguments. Louis de Sade a gentleman without a fortune and without significant ties was conservative through philosophical and historical conviction and not out of interest. It is with this perfect intellectual honesty that he studies the essays memoirs and political or theoretical works of his contemporaries. Running counter to Enlightenment thought the Chevalier's view of society owed very little to philosophy. Though he puts together a serious theoretical history of the development of Man from the condition of «savages» to the forging of various societies he does not posit Man's ideal nature as some of his contemporaries did. Some copies of the Stephanus Plato have appeared at auction lacking preliminaries altogether. In 2008 Sokol Books Ltd. catalogued the missing prelims: their absence is the works most common defect. Nuremberg Germany: Anton Koberger 1491. No Binding. Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. An original leaf from Schatzbehalter der wahren Reichtümer des Heils Treasure Chest of the True Riches of Salvation by Stephan Fridolin a late medieval work popularizing Scripture in text and image. Printed in Nuremberg by Anton Koberger on 8 November 1491 thus a true incunabulum. One of 354 leaves. Leaf size: 29.25 x 21 cm. Each leaf side contains underneath a heading 41 printed lines in 2 columns. Col. width: 7.3 cm. The recto heading is cristi uber sich genummenhaben likely a continuation of the heading of the previous page. The verso heading is wie alle wirdigkeit cristi beschemetist worden How Christ's dignity was humiliated. Both headings in lower case. Printed at the foot of the second column recto is signature "a c"; without foliation or catchword. As to the recto page in the margin at the base of the first column is a handwritten notation in light black ink. In the upper right margin is a notation that appears to read 1Ag. As to the verso page in the left margin is a handwritten notation in black ink. Also with a light crescent-shaped stain along the top half of the inner margin as to both sides and a much smaller light stain below that else clean. No worm holes or wrinkling observed. Rated a Good Plus to Very Good Minus leaf. Although most incunabula were printed in Latin best estimates are that 10.8 percent were printed in German using the Latin alphabet. Northern Bavarian Nordbairisch was a dialect spoken in the Nuremberg area in the Middle High German era 1050-1350 but overlapped with East Franconian Ostfränkisch. These were regional forms of German gradually losing status during 1350-1650 the Early New High German Frühneuhochdeutsch era. Since the ENHG printers had a commercial interest in making their texts acceptable to a wide readership they often strove to avoid purely local forms of language. This gave rise to so-called Druckersprachen "printers' languages" which are not necessarily identical to the spoken dialect of the town where the press was located. Most MHG and ENHG words survive into modern German in some form or other: this leaf contains one word jehen 'say' which has since disappeared from the language. But many words have changed their meaning substantially. Typeface closely resembles that used by Anton Koberger of Nuremberg in his 1483 German Bible and 1488 German translation of the Golden Legend but not that of his 1484 Reformation der Stadt Nurnberg. This is no. 33 of a limited edition of 100 copies only plus copies I-X for the author so stated. This is a bilingual edition in Polish and in German. Translated into German by Karl Dedecius. The artist is Stasys Eidrigevicius. Complete in a three-part custom portfolio plus slipcase. 12.25 x 9.75 inches. The left side of the portfolio with 9 poems in the original Polish bound in the center with 8 original etchings bound in and the right side with 9 poems in German translation. Also with colophon pages in Polish and German. The portfolio of beige linen or linen-like cloth immensely clean and with sharp corners. Each of the three panels of the portfolio screenprinted with a large facsimile of the signatures of the poet artist and translator respectively. As called for there are eight original etchings of copperplate and aquatint. The etchings pulled on ecru heavy-duty card stock apparently produced in Poland. On average each plate measures 5.75 x 4.75 inches. Most plates in gray-scale and a few with subtle tones of blue or brown added. Each of the etchings is signed in light pencil by the artist just below the impression. All pages including text and plates exceptionally clean. We can find no demerits. Lovely custom full-pictorial slipcase bound in gray cloth stamped in black and white. The featured silkscreen by the artist consists of the wrap-around design on the slipcase. Slipcase with just a trace of soiling/browning to the rear board. A Fine copy in a Near Fine slipcase. Rare in any condition. Czeslaw Milosz 1911-2004 was a Lithuanian-born "Polish poet prose writer translator and diplomat. His World War II-era sequence The World is a collection of twenty 'naïve' poems. Following the war he served as Polish cultural attaché in Paris and Washington D.C. then in 1951 defected to the West. His nonfiction book The Captive Mind 1953 became a classic of anti-Stalinism. From 1961 to 1998 he was a professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of California Berkeley. In 1978 he was awarded the Neustadt International Prize for Literature and in 1980 the Nobel Prize in Literature." Stasys Eidrigevicius b.1949 is a painter and graphic artist. "Lithuanian-born Polish-based Stasys is an artist of popular taste who values expression over intellectual constructs. His art has a faux-naif humorous flavour in its reductionist qualities superimposing itself over the romantic notion of art as a metronome registering the 'vibrations of the soul'. Stasys' works often depict single figures who sometimes carry simple domestic implements or furniture; their distorted physiognomies are veiled with a fan a pair of slippers or a basket covering the head. <br/> <br/> Correspondance des Arts II hardcover
