‎1889 - 1890 ORIGINAL CRUISE JOURNAL DIARY AND LOG BOOK OF A YOUNG MAN DESTINED TO BE A CAPTAIN AND THE FUTURE ACTING GOVERNOR OF GUAM ON HIS INITIAL US NAVAL ACADEMY VOYAGE TO THE PACIFIC STATION ABOARD THE STORIED USS IROQUOIS‎

‎USS IROQUOIS PACIFIC STATION. Very Good. 1889. On offer is a super 19th Century relic of United States Naval and marine history being the original manuscript 18 month "Cruise Journal / L.A. Kaiser / U.S. Navy Class of '89". Kaiser does a wonderful job and is a keen observer. Entries run from Captain's comments day to day activities sailing sightings seamanship special detail work going to 'quarters' and remarkable events and observations in this log dated July 1 1889 to December 31 1890. Fresh from the Naval Academy the future captain and Governor of Guam Louis A. Kaiser begins the last leg of his naval education aboard the historic USS Iroquois. In 131 well written pages we learn that Kaiser was aboard the U.S.S. Iroquois from Mare Island to Honolulu then onto Samoa and back. From 1882 to 1892 with the Pacific Squadron Iroquois patrolled to South America Hawaii Australia and Pacific islands protecting American interests and commerce. She took part in naval action in Panama in the spring of 1885 helping to land Marines to protect American commerce during the revolution. After 10 years of service on the Pacific Station Iroquois arrived at Mare Island on 24 April 1892 and was decommissioned there 12 May 1892. BIO NOTES: Louis A. Kaiser Wikipedia Louis A. Kaiser 1870-August 12 1939 was a Captain in the United States Navy as well as briefly acting-Governor of Guam. He was a pioneer in the Navy on the use of wireless telegraphy prior to World War I. Early career Kaiser was born in Kirkwood Illinois. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1889 and was commissioned an Ensign in 1891. His first assignment was the USS Chicago. In 1894 he was transferred to the USS Detroit and again onto the USS Michigan two years later. In 1896 he was also reassigned to the USS Concord. In the Spanish-American War he continued to serve on the Concord and he fought in the Battle of Manila Bay. In December 1898 he was promoted to Lieutenant junior grade. In 1899 he was briefly made acting-Governor of Guam in preparation for the arrival of Governor Richard Phillips Leary. In 1900 he was transferred to the USS Solace then again to a post in Newport Virginia. In 1904 he was transferred again to the Bureau of Equipment. In this role Kaiser was a pioneer in early wireless transmissions and conducted many of the early tests of wireless telegraphy. In 1905 he demonstrated a 1100 mile range while testing it aboard the USS Brooklyn. In July 1905 he was promoted to a full lieutenant commander and invited to speak on these innovations to the Washington Society of Engineers in Washington DC. In 1910 he was transferred to the Bureau of Steam Engineering. In 1912 he was given his first command the cruiser USS Montgomery. The following year he was given command of the USS Tennessee before being promoted to a full commander. He served in the Boston Naval Yard and Naval War College in Newport Rhode Island in 1915 before returning to the command of the battleship USS New Jersey and receiving a promotion to captain. In the 1920s Kaiser was assigned to the hydrographic office in Galveston Texas. In 1923 he was briefly the acting-commandant of the 8th Naval District before being assigned to the New York hydrographic office. He retired April 1 1925. He died in 1939 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. In period half sheep leather binding. Laid in are Naval Academy assignments and a manuscript map. ‎METLAKAHTLA ALASKA. Very Good. 1896. On offer is a super archive of six 6 manuscript letters handwritten by Mrs. H. J. Minthorn from Metlakahtla Alaska to Lorena Brownawell Tayne dated 1896 - 1897. Dr. and Mrs. H. J. Minthorn were missionaries in Alaska during this time period and very interestingly the Minthorn's were aunt and uncle to President Herbert Hoover; Dr. Minthorn being his uncle and foster father. Historians researchers and collectors of the era and the subject of Alaskan natives and missionary efforts to convert them will find a treasure trove within the letters as they detail the Indians in the area and their customs as well as details of Metlakahtla. One multi page letter appears to be missing its title page. There is only one envelope. ‎HONDURAS 1838. On offer is a fascinating original significant 1838 - 1840 manuscript diary of an unidentified Englishman in the Central American country of Honduras. While the author is unidentified we believe that there is a familial connection to Lt.-Col. Hugh Guin Macdonnel also spelled Macdonald along other connected family lines whose later 1870s diary while he was a diplomat in Argentina we list separately. Both diaries came from the same estate. The family connection would appear to fit well with his time spent in Honduras with the MacDonalds. Using a 7½ x 9 inch coverless sewn ream of paper he begins writing 21 pages from November 28th 1838 through to January 19th 1840 the author details his times living and traveling in Honduras. Historians and researchers of the Central American country recognize by the dates that the writer has arrived in Honduras at a key moment in the country's history as mere days earlier Honduras had left the Central American Federation after 17 years and becoming an independent and sovereign state in October. While the country's evolving independence is the backdrop the diary reveals a man in turmoil struggling to reconcile his deep feelings and sometimes innermost thoughts with his religious beliefs making for an unusual sharing of those emotions with pen to paper: writing about his frequent companions the Colonel and Mrs. Macdonald: "I rode with Mrs Macd' in the morning.some impure thoughts. I confessed the sin on uncleanliness and prayed for forgiveness.Vanity - I felt sorry that no one witnessed me giving an old man a flannel frock". Casual research reveals this to be Colonel Alexander Macdonald of the Royal Artillery her majesty's Superintendent in Honduras. He writes of his day to day life "Went to the hospital in the morning to visit a sick man. I am afraid he will die. What an awful consideration as I fear he was an habitual drunkard. I prayed for him with Mr Newport who seems to have been the settlements chaplain in his boat.I dined at the barracks.sent a letter about coming home by Patsy Blount.a great deal of work in the office.on Christmas day I rowed poor Ed Strangeways on board the schooner in a little boat to make the men on board a present of two bibles. I observed something very odd in his manner and on landing begged Mr Newport to observe him.We both agreed he was not right in the mind.the most alarming symptoms; on Monday he was bled in both arms.Determined on going home on the Guatemala packet.today the packet has bought me accounts from home and of my brother Neil." He then travels on the Nina and stops briefly in New Orleans. He writes of going to the Theatre there and being "much disquieted with the constant use off the name of God" before returning to England where he states that he has been found a place a Magdalen College Cambridge by his uncle Edward. On offer is an interesting manuscript letter and relic of Christian outreach dated Bishop's Lodge Nagasaki Japan October 19 1898 to Bishop Bardsley handwritten by Henry Evington Bishop of Kiushu. He is writing to say that he is happy that Bishop Bardsley's health has returned. "I was grieved to see that you were so much worse after reaching Egypt. From all account it would seem as if Africa were going to swallow up the new missionaries and there seems to be a great scarcity of offers for service both at home and abroad." He writes that his wife is still at home "arranging for the boys Education" but hopes to arrive by Christmas with her mother. Measures approx. 5" x 8" when folded. BIO NOTES: One online source provides: Henry Evington was the Bishop of Kiushu was at Eton in 1870 and rowed for them. He arrived in Japan in 1874 and served an Anglican priest in Kobe for the English community before becoming a missionary Christian Missionary Society - C. M. S. He was consecrated in March of 1894 as Bishop of Kiushu. A reference was found that both of his wife's parents went to Japan died there and were buried in Nagasaki. The Rt Rev John Wareing Bardsley DD MA 1835 - 1914 became the Bishop of Sodor and Man in 1887. In 1891 he was translated to Carlisle where he remained until his death. Overall VG. ‎1890s ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT NOTES ON A LECTURE BY THE RENOWNED AFRICAN EXPLORER DETAILING THE EMIN PASHA RELIEF EXPEDITION‎

On offer is a superb manuscript relic of Victorian Era exploration travel and adventure being an original notebook handwritten by what appears to be a reporter's notes there are editorial corrections in colored pencil from a lecture given by Henry Morton Stanley concerning the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition and a journey into Darkest Africa. This notebook has 12 pages of handwritten notes written on one side of the page only plus the covers and one blank page at the end measuring about 9.5" x 6". The notes begin: "As Stanley entered the stage and walked to his seat he was greeted with loud applause which lasted for about one minute then he was introduced and there was more applause after the audience became quiet he began to speak. He began by saying my lecture tonight will be upon the preparations for the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition and of our march through Darkest Africa. The he went on and gave his impression of Emin Pasha a very large broad shouldered military hero - a second Chinese Gordon." It is known that following the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition into Darkest Africa Stanley went on a lecture tour in advance of publishing his book and this appears to be most assuredly the notes from one of those lectures. The handwriting is neat and legible and easily read. Overall VG. The following is some information on Henry Morton Stanley and the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition from Wikipedia: The Emin Pasha Relief Expedition of 1886 to 1889 was one of the last major European expeditions into the interior of Africa in the nineteenth century ostensibly to the relief of Emin Pasha General Charles Gordon's besieged governor of Equatoria threatened by Mahdist forces. Led by Henry Morton Stanley the expedition came to be both celebrated for its ambition in crossing "darkest Africa" and notorious for the bloodshed and death left in its wake. When the Mahdists captured Khartoum in 1885 Egyptian administration of the Sudan collapsed and the extreme southern province Equatoria located on the upper reaches of the Nile near Lake Albert was nearly cut off from the outside world. Emin Pasha was a German doctor and naturalist who had been appointed Governor of Equatoria. He was able to send and receive letters via Buganda and Zanzibar and had been informed in February 1886 that the Egyptian government would abandon Equatoria. In July encouraged by the missionary Alexander Mackay he had invited the British government to annex Equatoria itself. Although the government was not interested in such a doubtful venture the British public came to see Emin as a second General Gordon in mortal danger from the Mahdists. By November Scottish businessman and philanthropist William Mackinnon who had been involved in various colonial ventures had approached Stanley about leading a relief expedition. Stanley declared himself ready "at a moment's notice" to go. Mackinnon then approached J. F. Hutton a business acquaintance also involved in colonial activities and together they organized the "Emin Pasha Relief Committee" mostly consisting of Mackinnon's friends whose first meeting was on 19 December 1886. The Committee raised a total of about 32000 pounds. Stanley was officially still in the employment of Léopold II of Belgium whom he had been employed by in carving out Léopold's 'Congo Free State'. As a compromise for letting Stanley go it was arranged in a meeting in Brussels between Stanley and the king that the expedition would take a longer route up the Congo River contrary to plans for a shorter route inland from the eastern African coast. In return Léopold would provide his Free State steamers for the transportation of the expedition up the river from Stanley Pool now Pool Malebo as far as the mouth of the Aruwimi River. On offer is a superb original 1870 Victorian Era manuscript 100 page diary and some copied popular verse 50pages handwritten by Julia M. D. Mayberg as identified by the ownership inscription on the front endpaper: "Julia M. D. Mayberg July 27th 1870" an upper middle class Gower Peninsula Welsh teenage girl who details a life of some privilege living on the Peninsula The Mumbles in Wales between 20 June 1870 - 15 May 1871 travelling frequently with her widowed mother. We believe her home base was in or near Bishopston and family is noted in Dublin and throughout England journeying there with her mother sometimes with their servant Annie. A life of indulgence is described: daily afternoon teas collecting crests walking the seashore shopping in England jewellery and non essentials. Devoutly Christian her uncle William is a reverend and she attends church services very regularly with a sincere interest in the sermons. Well read well educated the author enjoys good conversation and even the French card game Bezique! The young girl's life plays out with the sensational backdrop of the renowned Gower Peninsula in South Wales making for an utterly unique personal account of life there for this young lady. Local travel included Swansea and all over the Gower Peninsula often via the family pony carriage and just on foot. Cheriton Llanmadoc Hill and Llanddewi-Brefi the ancient Llanmadoc Church recently restored and home pulpit of Reverend and author J. D. Davies. Trips to England for a wedding in Bath family near Stroud a jaunt to Chippenham and occasionally to Brighton once for a spectacular Christmas shopping trip where she and her mother purchased a "real" ermine fur muff writing paper specialty foods and seasonal treats a crystal decanter dolls and a doll's wash stand and basin numerous gifts. She makes frequent mention of sermons preached by Octavius Winslow in Brighton. Relative to the period she often notices "servants" travelling with "masters". A journey is also made to Southampton to see off her Uncle Arthur and Aunt Agnes who were sailing to India on 6 January 1871 onboard the steamer "Ceylon." Here are some snippets: 21 June 1870. "We went to Bath and Aunt Annie went with us." "I bought my parting present for Millicent which was a crimson marker with two anchors meaning hope and two hearts meaning charity dropping from it made of gilt. I bought a blue necklace for myself one I had always wished for and went down to Millicent and showed her my gold chain and locket and gave her the marker which she was very pleased with. And I brought her home to tea and we walked about the garden and acted an aligory and then acted something else." "When we got to Stroud we had a very long drive of ten miles to go in a waggonet that was sent for us. the train doesn't go further than Stroud. When we got to Uncle Sam's we were very tired. Miss Lydiarde the governess is very nice." "In one shop we went into Mother bought me a manuscript book for writing 'My Journal' in and a small one for herself. ‎WASHINGTON DC. Very Good. 1890. On offer is a fascinating original 'pressed copy' U.S. Post Office department letter dated March 10 1890. It is written to Chief Postal Inspector E.G. Rathbone by one of the U.S. Post Office's most renowned Postal Inspectors Alonzo G. Sharp. This letter is in reference to dismissing African-American Postmaster Monroe B. Pink Morton of Athens Georgia for blowing the cover of undercover Postal Inspectors to other Postal Officials. Postal Inspectors act as the Detectives and Police of the U.S. Post Office. Alonzo G. Sharp Ex-Mayor of Chattanooga Tennessee once issued City-Backed script in place of cash to the city's poor so that they could survive in a terrible economy. This act almost bankrupted the city. As a Postal Inspector for the Southern District he captured many outlaws crooks forgers and swindlers who used the U.S. Mails as a vehicle for gaining wealth including almost single-handedly bringing down the famous 'Louisiana Lottery'. He also played a major part in the capture of the 'Rube Burrow Gang'. The Rube Burrow Gang was a group of Train Robbers and Outlaws. They were second in notoriety only to the Jesse James Gang. Monroe Bowers Pink Morton founder of the Morton Theatre was born in Athens Georgia in May 1853. "Pink" as he was known to family and friends was the son of a white father and an African-American mother Morton's mother was a slave. Although he had very little formal education Morton was an ambitious man who worked at various occupations before eventually establishing himself as a building contractor. As a building contractor Morton designed the Wilkes County now Washington-Wilkes County Courthouse. In addition to the courthouse he participated in the construction of an Anniston Alabama government building. Another well known fact was that Mr. Morton owned between twenty-five to thirty Athens area buildings including a "$10000 Marblestone building" on what was originally Clayton Street in downtown Athens. Morton was also the owner and publisher of the Progressive Era the first African-American owned newspaper in Athens. The paper was established in 1914. In 1896 Morton was chosen as a state delegate to the Republican National Convention. While in attendance he was appointed to the committee which informed William McKinley of his nomination as the Republican Party candidate for President of the United States. After McKinley's election victory Morton was appointed as the United States Postmaster for Athens Georgia. He remained in this post for the next five years garnering high praise from local citizens for his performance. In 1909 Morton began construction on the Morton building. It is alleged that the design specifications for the Morton Theatre were based on an architectural design from a Frank Cox of Chicago Illinois who had originally designed these plans for the nearby New Opera House. On May 18 1910 the Morton building was completed. The building housed various business occupants including the E.D. Harris Drug Store Athens' first African-American owned drug store Dr. Ida Johnson Hiram the first state-licensed African-American woman dentist and the Morton Theatre the first African-American built owned and operated vaudeville theatre in America. "Pink" often acted as the Theatre's Lighting and/or Stage Director for some of the performances. As owner and operator of the building he used the rent collected from its various business occupants to subsidize the operation of the Theatre. Monroe Bowers Morton died in 1919 at the age of 66. A 'Pressed Copy' was a system used in the pre-Carbon Paper Era. One would write the letter to be copied and while the ink was still semi-dry the letter would be placed along with a blank copy of moistened linen paper into a press. ‎Perth Amboy New York. Very Good. 1903. On offer is a massive archive of typed and handwritten manuscript papers relating to THOMAS D. PITTS famed American Ship Wright and Naval Architect. From his personal files the archive boasts two sections: 1a a detailed journal used as a diary during the important design and construction of the Cadet Ship YOUNG AMERICA and 1b over sixty 60 papers including correspondence the Contract Agreement and much much more from Mr. Pitts estate. Companies mentioned include the Perth Amboy Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. the Nautical Preparatory School Rodermond Brothers and more. The second section is 2a comprised of three typed and handwritten "Letter Books" dated 1903 63 pp 1904 497 pp and 1905 383pp. These 10" x 12" copy books are perfect carbon-type copies of the original letters whose number is over 500 each running between 1 and 3 pages. All of the letters are written by Thomas Pitts. The earliest book involves matters of a personal nature and provide a unique insight into Pitts private life; many of those have to do with placing his brother Herman in an insane asylum because of his drug addiction which we assume is opium. The second and third books business related and contain some fascinating historical information as Thomas was quite the business man around the New York City area. Other work involves early automobiles; he opens his own office in New York as a general consulting engineer; helps place old and unused ships in the hands of private owners; works on the Ludlow Docks in Yonkers; the ship "Pennsylvania" which is the main ship he's working on for the Nautical Preparatory School in Rhode Island; raises some capitol for a Mexican street railway plant and much much more is revealed in this massive archive. One letter is somewhat of a resume. Here is a snippet: "Gentlemen: March 27th 1905 Replying to your favor of the 22nd last I beg to submit the following resume of my experience; I am not a technical school graduate having left college at the end of the freshman year on account of ill health. Between the ages of 18 and 20 was variously employed in mechanical work some 6 months of that time being spent in the shops of the Westinghouse Electric Co. and then existing 1891 Westinghouse Electric & Mfg. Co. in Pittsburgh. During the years 1892 1893 & July 1894 I was engaged as draftsman on Naval Architectural work in Boston Mass. Balance of 1894 draftsman with Boston Bridge Works. Spring 1895 asst. to Stevian Motive Power Office New England R.R. Summer 1895 Draftsman Berlin Iron Bridge Co. 1896 & 1897 asst. Engineer Aransas Pass Harbor Co. ‎ELMIRA NEW YORK WILLIAMSPORT PENNSYLVANIA. Very Good. 1908. On offer is a remarkable archive of thirteen 13 manuscript diaries handwritten by railroad executive George B. Ahn of Elmira New York and later Williamsport Pennsylvania. Collectors and historians of Pennsylvania and New York State railroad Americana will find a treasure trove of details in these diaries spanning forty-one years between 1908 - 1949 1908 1909 1910 1911 1912 1913 1914 1918 1920 1924 1925 1926 and 1949. The reader will see a man and his family mature before one's eyes. Most of the diaries are 80-90% full with about 4 years half full but overall George does a fantastic job relating the events of his life in specific detail except for his own age! We know from the first diary in 1908 his wife is 30 years old and then we learn they were married in 1902. It would appear since there is one child born well prior to the wedding Helen could be his second wife the first having died or been a divorce within the last ten months. Local historians and researchers will undoubtedly discover the prior events with some small effort. The books are small format diaries but George writes in tiny perfectly legible script typical of an engineer. His life breaks down into four areas: family Church politics and the Railroad. We believe P. and E. Railroad is his specific employer but he travels so many numbered trains and lines on a daily basis it is hard to be certain. Living in Elmira he often takes daily trips to Baltimore Buffalo Harrisburg Williamsport and as in the case of emergencies he would go to the far reaches of Pennsylvania as he did when the Austin Dam burst. The family is large and growing: wife Helen nee McClosky b. Jan.28.1878 married in Dec. 27th 1902 her sick mother their five kids Harold Daniel b. Feb. 3rd 1902 Georgie Bertha b. Oct. 25 1897 and baby Helen Elizabeth b. Nov.22 1907 Eloise b. Jan. 30 1913. Executive level meetings the Austin Dam disaster clean up Charlie Snyder crushed under train wheels passenger train inspections heads investigations into loss and damage claims worked on instructions for New Car Distribution Blanks and revised Loading Instructions other investigations and committees are all matters for George's attention. Then there is the Church. If George is not working or dealing with family matters he is attending Church Revival Services going to meetings for different missions appealing to 'seekers' going to lectures etc. In the 1949 diary we learn that George preaches almost exclusively most certainly long retired as he must be in his seventies by then. Lastly there is politics which George has a keen interest: he notes on a mayoralty race: "Wolfe being elected by landslide of Republican votes. Unfortunately he was backed by the base element…Wolfe is a stock broker - gambler." George also gives a tremendous amount of family and area history and genealogical information noting births deaths and other local events. Online research provided this following interesting note that validates the claim further research is required to flesh out the missing years of this interesting gentleman and his family. This 1911 copy of the "19th crop" of "Drummer's Yarns and Funny Jokes" subtitled "Original and Selected American Humor with Many Laughable Illustrations" is typical of a sub-genre of the pulp magazine precursors to comic books widely circulated at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Named for and generally associated with "drummers" or traveling salesmen known for their often entertaining "spiels" laced with jokes and humor to appeal to whomever and whatever they were trying to "sell" these throw-away magazines could be found in train stations tobacco shops barber shops and hotels and diners wherever "drummers" and other travelers were likely to congregate. About 7 x 9 3/4 inches 96 pages in pictorial paper wrappers featuring front-cover illustration of young man in derby and vest with luggage at both feet and wearing large welcoming smile bordered in red against a green background with white lettering. Back cover contains ads for nine other publications including "Hoyle's Games" "Brown's Business Correspondence " and Payne's Social Letter-Writer." Contents include jokes short humorous stories numerous humorous black & white cartoons and illustrations as well as at the back two pages of publisher's ads. Text is complete clean and unmarked. Binding is basically intact and holding well. Spine strip with black lettering including 25-cent original price is badly chipped with large fragments missing. Previous owner's signature and home town written twice on front cover once on back; also pair of one-inch closed tears on front cover fore edge. Back cover stained and worn but all printed matter legible. Keep in mind that this remnant of humor and lifestyle from over a hundred years ago contains examples of humor that is today considered racist and disrespectful of many religions occupations and national origins. On offer is a sensational 122 page hippie era 'Grand Tour' manuscript diary handwritten by a young woman named Linda Westergren determined to let it all hang out in the spirit of the 1970s drug sex and rock 'n roll era. Written while in her early 20s the diary is a study in hippie era travel and indulgence and the writer shares it all. The trip to Europe is with a friend and they travel around Europe staying in hostels tents and in train stations. The title page boasts: "Trip to Europe starting July 31st 1978. Written mostly on trains in depots and tents!" They meet several men smoked hashish and pot drank and drugged quite a bit and the writer describes their travels sometimes in a quite rank and salty language. She really holds nothing back. As with so many young people coming out of "the sixties" which many call the age of "irresponsible excess and flamboyance." This diary documents it well. The diary consists of handwritten pages and starts when they arrive in New York City getting ready for there adventures in Europe. Here are some snippets: 1978 "July 31st We arrived in New York about 11:00 A.M. We had to get J.'s youth hostel card downtown so we took a cab robbery. Wrong place! Got to ride the infamous subways twice even. At JFK we had a four hour layover and didn't get out till 4:00 A.M. We were the only ones awake and drinking on the plane. The day a trial in patience!" "August 2nd Arrived in Paris with one change over in Metz France at 8:30. We thought we had troubles before get a load of this! Well this time we had enough sense to exchange our money to francs but we have no idea what they're worth. By noon we were ready to come home. 99 percent didn't speak English the youth hostels are $10 a nite too much and the campsites are too far away. To top it all off we can't figure out how many francs the phone takes. We got a tip on a reasonable hotel but couldn't find the number and there is no information operator in Paris. Lugging our packs 38 pounds around no sleep really and nothing in English we were almost in tears. Well got a hold of the hotel now the subway. Naturally went the wrong way but we made it. Ah no showers. Into the sink we go showers cost more. Feel better! Went to the market and got fresh fruit bread cheese and dynamite salami. Now were getting the "franc" down…with a full stomach and soft bed J's already passed out at 7:00 and I'm close behind. Things are looking better!" Brussels Amsterdam camp site "hash" Copenhagen Tivoli "August 9th Took a train out at 11:19 P.M. last night and arrived at 8 A.M. Didn't get much sleep on the floor. The train was packed. D. was going to Oslo but decided to go with us to Stockholm. Found a camp right near the beach Camp Angby. We're really camping out this time no hostels yet. Right in the middle of evergreens over the rocks and tree roots. We washed clothes on the 4th and they never completely dried so everything was starting to smell and almost mildew. Every time we tried to hang them out it rained so today we had to wash everything all over again by hand. Thank God it was sunny. By the time that was done it was about 5:00 so we went onto Stockholm to get something to eat. We had Wienerschnitzel. I always thought that was wieners but it's veal in Swedish. Then we went on to an island where Tivoli the Swedish amusement park is. Spent the night in a discothèque. All the songs were in English. Not having much sleep the last two nights headed for camp about midnight. D. decided to stay the night so we had three in our tent. It was pretty cold so we kept even warmer." "August 13th Got up early enough to be into town by 9:00 but German's don't care to pick up hitch hikers I guess. Finally caught a ride then by tram and bus and to the depot by 9:30. Too late! The bus that goes down the Romantic Road to Fussen. Left at 9:00. All the stores are closed on Sunday in Germany so there was nothing to do. Well I decided to buy patches of all the countries we go to and sew them on my pack. Also I met a guy on a train that had a real neat lighter I wanted so I looked at all the shops in Wurzburg. Got a couple but it was still only about 1:00. J. and I decided to take a ride rather than sit in the train depot. Off to Frankfurt. No patches or lighter. Still bored!! Got on another train to Born. Nothing there but a Mac Donald's. Get this. They sold beer. So we sat in Mac Donald's and guzzled beer until we were almost drunk. An hour later got on the train to Wurzburg it's only about 4 hours and passed out. Got in at 1:00 A.M. and slept on the train depot floor until 6:00. Looking up at a German officer at that hour I thought he was going to line me up against the wall!" Zurich "August 16th After walking thru Zurich decided to go to Lucerne. Left about 2:00 and got in about 3:30 and went strait to the camp ground. Put the tent up in the mud no grass. It had been raining here too! With that done we went in their rec-room and ate. Shortly two guys from London came in and two guys from the states. They sat and drank wind and beer and ate. The British guys sounded just like B. Shit! We just drank coffee at first then broke down and bought some wine. Another international party! British are even funnier when they slur their words. J. wanted pot and never got any too bad and Mike kept wanting in our tent while J. was in theirs. But he was so loaded it reminded me too much of Evergreen. Still got to look those guys up in London." "Rode with two chicks that drove us so crazy we had to take 2 Actifed's!" "August 20th Slept till 9:30 but didn't get out of the hotel till 11:30. At least the clothes dried all but the jeans naturally. We were going to take a bus but since we didn't really know where the hell we were we decided to take another cab to the train depot and leave our packs. Found out the bullfights didn't start until 6:00 so we had 6 can't add hours to kill. Went to a fast food and had coffee and that's where we met them!! The waiter-bartenders were the nicest looking guys I think I've ever seen. None of them spoke English but we started to joke with them. We had about 4 stiff drinks and were having a good time. Some how we got it across to them that we like them. They got off at 3:00 so off we went with them to who knows where. I don't think it was either of their apts. But probably Pedro's sisters. Our affair lasted only one hour and we were off again for no apparent reason. We asked them to go to the bullfights with us but reasons unknown again wouldn't so of all places back to the train depot and strait to where they worked. We didn't want tot go up to the counter but could see all the lips flapping. It really hurt our feelings. We left without really saying goodbye and stared walking. Hailed a cab to the bullfights which was real fascinating. Only problem was being a little high at first it almost made me sick. After sobering up it was exciting! We got back to the train depot at 10:00. We were still bummed about those guys. Decided to leave them a note but the mission was never fulfilled. Wasted away too much time and ended up missing the last train and our backpacks were locked in storage and by midnight the train depot was closing. We ended up jumping a fence and another fence for a swim in the pool and about an hours worth of sleep in the grass." Barcelona Carioles Pisa Florence "August 31st Unbelievable but true when we woke up W. was with another friend waiting outside our tent since 8:00. Apologized severely for the day before and tried his best to talk us into staying. Broke camp by 10:30 and went with the guys. Stopped for groceries and back to the fucking park again!! Poor sweet S. was so bummed when we left at 1:00. Exchanged address and off to another adventure as they say! Got to Brindisi at 9:15. From a tip we went to get tickets and barely made the boat at 10:30. Met John just before boarding. When on board met she mentions many names and played 20 questions and drank till 1:00. Fell asleep on the deck to the rocking of the boat. Puke no not really." "September 7th Needless to say we missed the boat and Frank said "I told you you would." The girls needed to go into town so decided to give us a lift. It was raining again. 5 in a VW and 2 backpacks we headed down the mountain. On the way down jewel was driving and coming up on an accident she applied her brakes which had failed and ran into a taxi. Didn't do any damage to the taxi but scary had a black eye. Got the bug to the shop mid-afternoon and went to eat. With the weird schedules of the boats and buses we ended up missing the last bus and no ferries that day. By 9:00 the bug was ready and once again headed up to the campsite by 10:00. J. and I thought we'd never get off the island. Built a fire and slept by it till the boys got back at 4 A.M. They had discovered Onzo on ice. Frank was pretty bombed so I kind of gave him a shi-y time and made him sleep in his own sleeping bag. What a bad as- I am. He said he was glad to see me back though." "September 14th Didn't get up till 11:00. Got our tent up in time for it to rain. The guys walked into town and we took a bath in the ocean. Sun never did shine that day. It stopped raining long enough to wash our clothes in the ocean I might add and to take a sh-t. Gathered wood and tried to build a fire. Made rice and meat etc. with ocean water and couldn't eat it. Too salty. All in all the day was a disaster also. The island has no trees! We call it "Skull Island." "A note to myself. I take this vow today the 7th of November to be back in Europe within 2 years!!!" Her friend decides to head home back to the states and she stays awhile longer with the new friends she's met.
