‎1939 - 1940 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND NOTEBOOK OF DENMARK'S MOST NOTED AND DECORATED HEROES OF WORLD WAR II AND THE RESISTANCE TO THE GERMAN OCCUPATION OF DENMARK‎

‎COPENHAGEN DENMARK. Very Good. 1939. On offer is a super original manuscript artefact of World War II being the handwritten diary of Vice Admiral H.A. Nyholm Commander in Chief of the Royal Danish Navy and a hero of the Resistance during the German Occupation written when serving as a Commander of the submarine "Havfruen" or "Mermaid" from the immediate outset of the war September 1st 1939 until May 11th 1940 thusly encompassing Operation Weserubung the German Occupation of Denmark on April 9th 1940. This historical diary has approximately 50 pages of entries and notes written in the Danish language is unpublished is filled with regular dated observations by Nyholm handwritten in pencil. Together with a fine studio portrait photograph of Nyholm probably taken circa early 1946 Nyholm is wearing the single medal ribbon bar of the Knight of the Order of Dannebrog. The photograph measures approx 16.7 cm's by 10.9 cm. HISTORICAL NOTES: Vice Admiral Hans Alfred Nyholm; Early life and career 1898 - 1945: Hans Alfred Nyholm was born in Copenhagen Denmark on the 15th August 1898. He applied to the Danish Admiralty for service in the Royal Danish Navy on 17th May 1914 and was sent for apprenticeship aboard the Patrol Vessel "Absalon" from 11th July to 2nd August 1914 and to the Naval Barracks for further apprenticeship from 2nd August to 10th September 1914. During this period he was still a school student at the "Galster of Hoboll". It appears that he applied for entrance to the Cadet School in 1915 but it was not till April 1919 that he passed the exam for entrance to the Naval Cadet School and passed in top of his class being appointed a Second Lieutenant in the Naval Officer Corps from 1st October 1919. He was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant 1st Grade in the Officer Corps from 1st October 1920. Nyholm appears to have served in a shore based capacity before he entered the Submarine School at Scoff for training from 15th October 1925 to 1st May 1926 and was subsequently appointed Temporary Commanding Officer of the B Class submarine "Triton" from 8th May 1926 being appointed Commanding Officer from 4th October 1926 during this period from 14th to 20th May 1926 he was put in charge of two United States officers on secondment. Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander from 1st May 1927 he was posted to command of the C Class submarine "Rota" from 3rd June 1927 and to the command of the C Class submarine "Flora" on 2nd May 1928 followed by the A Class submarine "Najaden" on 14th July 1928 and to the C Class submarine "Bellona" from 17th August 1928. On 3rd October 1928 he was appointed to the command of the D Class submarine "Daphne" and would remain with this vessel through to 19th November 1931 during which time he participated in a mission to the Atlas Works at Bremen Germany for new U.T. Appliances and would also attend trials in a new motor at Kiel from 16th February to 17th December 1930 he was on service with the submarine division followed by from October to November 1931 he was Superintendent at the Submarine School for Engineers he was also awarded the Polish Order of Polonia Restituta on 24th September 1930. He was Temporary Commanding Officer of the B Class submarine "Neptun" from 1st February 1931 before returning to command the "Daphne" from 19th December 1931. Appointed to command the D Class submarine "Dryaden" from 21st January 1933 and again the "Daphne" from 13th October 1934 it was for services with this submarine that he was awarded the Belgium Military Decoration 2nd Class on 30th April 1935. Whilst with this submarine he also served as School Superintendent for the Submarine Sea Officers School. From 14th October 1935 through to 10th February 1936 he was again School Superintendent for Submarine Sea Officers School and from 5th November 1935 was appointed Deputy Naval Officer for the construction of the E Class submarines. Reappointed to the command of the "Rota" from the 7th February 1936 and to the command of the B Class submarine "Ran" from 31st January 1936 he was reappointed to the command of the "Dryaden" from 1st April 1936 continuously through to 15th August 1937 during which time he was promoted to the rank of Commander on 17th June 1937. Appointed to the commmand of the B Class submarine "Galathea" from 15th August 1937 and then back to the "Daphne" on 1st April 1938 he returned to the "Dryaden" on 30th July 1938. Appointed to the command of the new H Class submarine "Havmanden" on 8th October 1938 he was serving in command of the B Class submarine "Triton" from 10th December 1938 and was appointed to two other commands the "Havmanden" again from 21st February 1939 the "Bellona" again from 6th May 1939 and when war was declared in Europe in September 1939 was serving aboard the then brand new H Class submarine "Havkalen" with which vessel he would remain until the occupation of Denmark by Germany in April to May 1940. Nyholm's final appointment prior to the disbandment of the Danish Navy by the Germans was as Head of the Submarine Division from 11th May through to 16th September 1940. For his long and distinguished service aboard submarines Nyholm was appointed a Knight of the Order of Dannebrog on 2nd April 1940. DENMARK UNDER THE OCCUPATION: Nazi Germany's occupation of Denmark began with Operation Weserubung on 9 April 1940 and lasted until German forces withdrew at the end of World War II following their surrender to the Allies on 5 May 1945. Nyholm's services during the German Occupation: The best written evidence of Nyholm's service during the German occupation can be gleaned from the original recommendation for the award of the Honourary Member of the Order of the British Empire awarded to Nyholm for his services with Danish Naval Intelligence during the occupation. As Nyholm was specifically working in Denmark covertly in support of the Allies and particularly Great Britain - the British recommendation sums it all up: At the outbreak of war Orlogskapajn Nyholm was personal assistant to the Admiral commanding the Danish Navy. After a short time he was transferred to the Naval Intelligence department to collect intelligence concerning German Fleet movements in Danish waters and to obtain details of the production of German U-Boats in Danish shipyards. On 29th August 1943 when the Germans demobilised the Danish Army and Navy the Danish Naval Commander in Chief gave instructions for certain units of the Danish Navy in Copenhagen harbour to be scuttled rather than allow them to fall into the hands of the Germans. Orlogkaptajn Nyholm was one of the officers responsible for the successful execution of this order. Orlogskapitajn Nyholm then set to work to establish Resistance Groups among naval officers and men. These groups were used for the collection of intelligence and for training as guerilla troops in the event of an invasion of Denmark by the Allies. At the end of 1943 the naval and military intelligence organisations combined and Orlogskapitajn Nyholm was appointed to a senior post on the combined staffs. In response to a request from the British Naval Intelligence Division the network of the Danish Naval Intelligence was considerably increased and detailed reports of all German shipping movements were sent to England three times a day. In December 1944 several of his colleagues were arrested and some were shot. Orlogskapitajn Nyholm himself was arrested with compromising papers on him but he managed to swallow these. He was subjected to such brutal torture that it is unlikely he will ever recover from the effects but he steadfastly refused to betray his comrades. He was finally sent to Neuen Gamme where once more he was very badly manhandled but again refused to divulge any compromising information. He remained in Neuen Gamme until the capitulation. Orlogskapitajn Nyholm's outstanding services in procuring high-grade naval intelligence was of the greatest value to the Allied cause. At all times he displayed the greatest bravery and self-sacrifice and his conduct has been a source of great inspiration to his comrades.' The United States of America in awarding him the Medal of Freedom with Bronze Palm state this: 'Captain Hans A. Nyholm Danish Navy for exceptionally meritorious achievement which aided the United States in the prosecution of the war against the enemy in Continental Europe until 5th May 1945. Captain Nyholm accomplished the duties assigned to him with outstanding and distinguished success thereby materially aiding the United States in the war against the enemy and in the eventual liberation of Denmark. His fortitude diligence perseverance and energy in dangerous and difficult circumstances reflect the highest credit upon him and the Allied Armed Forces.' For his distinguished war services Commander Hans Nyholm was promoted to the rank of Commander Captain on 23rd May 1945 and awarded the Danish Medal of Good Service in the Navy on 23rd January 1946; the Officer of the Legion D'Honneur by France on 27th November 1946; the Medal of Freedom with Bronze Palm by the United States of America on 20th December 1946; and the Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire M.B.E. by Great Britain on 30th May 1947. In addition he was awarded the title of Dannebrog Man on 22nd January 1948. The United States award is one of only 16 given to Danish recipients. Post Occupation services and achievements: Captain H.A. Nyholm Knight of Dannebrog and Dannebrog Man continued in the service of the reformed Royal Danish Navy post 1945. He was appointed to the command of the Royal Yacht "Dannebrog" on 14th January 1948 twice serving in this role the second time being in the Summer of 1949. No doubt as a result of Royal visits he was awarded the Royal Order of the Sword Swedish 2nd Class by Sweden on 16th June 1948 and the Commander of the Order of Saint Olav by Norway on 25th August 1948 though both of these awards may also have been belatedly in recognition of his war services. He had also been promoted to Naval Commodore on 18th February 1948. Promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral on 15th June 1950 he was appointed to the Command of the Danish Navy Coastal Fleet on 22nd September 1950 and was subsequently put in command of the Royal Danish Navy on 19th December 1951. He had been awarded the Commander 2nd Class Grade of the Order of the Dannebrog on 29th January 1951. Nyholm would remain Head of the Danish Navy & Chief of Naval Staff through to his retirement in 1961. Promoted to Vice Admiral on 1st June 1958 during his service as Head of the Danish Navy he would be grated the following Honours and Awards: from Denmark: Commander 1st Grade of the Order of the Dannebrog on 29th January 1956; Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog on 29th January 1961; Norway: Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Olav on 11th September 1958; Sweden: Commander Grand Cross of the Order of the Swedish Sword in 12th December 1961; United States of America: Commander of the Legion of Merit on 18th December 1959; Brazil: Grand Commander of the Order of Naval Merit on 26th April 1956; and from the Netherlands: Grand Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau on 24th October 1958 and the Grand Officer of the House Order of Orange in June 1953. Vice Admiral H.A. Nyholm Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog and Dannebrog Man retired on 21st February 1961 and died aged 66 in 1964. On offer is an interesting original group of three 3 1907 through 1910 birding journals handwritten by Edna Huntington Merrell the daughter of Edward Huntington Merrell 1835 - 1910 who was a reverend but also the President of Ripon College in Ripon Wisconsin between 1876 - 1891. He was married to Ada Clark Merrell. All of his children also went to Ripon College including Ada his daughter. Edna did her bird watching around the state of Wisconsin and also on campus. There are also many names of other birders when they would go in groups. All told there are 280 handwritten pages but her entries stop abruptly in March of 1910 the month her father died. On offer is a fascinating original 1944 - 1945 manuscript relic of an Afrika Korps German soldier Klaus Bredehoft of Bokel Germany born 10.7.07 and captured in 1942 in North Africa held as a Prisoner Of War in the United States specifically in Kennedy Texas and Dermott Arkansas. This notebook is in a hand made cover with a loose tucked in text block appears to be a report card regarding studies and lectures attended while a POW. Almost entirely in German entries are signed off by what appears to be ranking Officers. ‎1934 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED HANDWRITTEN BY A MEMBER OF THE FAMED BOWDOIN MACMILLAN ARCTIC EXPEDITION ON A SCIENTIFIC JOURNEY TO THE WILDS OF LABRADOR NEWFOUNDLAND‎

‎NAIN HOPEDALE NEWFOUNDLAND LABRADOR. Very Good. 1934. On offer is a very interesting 1934 manuscript relic of scientific and arctic exploration being a handwritten letter dated July 7 1934 after their arrival in Nain Labrador in Newfoundland written by S. Braley Gray Jr. and sent to a family member in Old Town Maine. The letterhead reads in bold lettering "BOWDOIN - MACMILLAN Artic Expedition" along with Donald B. Macmillan and the names of the rest of the crew which includes the author of this letter S. Braley Gray Jr. The Bowdoin - Macmillan Artic Expedition of 1934 was for the purpose of studying and collecting birds and plants on the coast of Labrador and the Button Islands. The famous Artic explorer Commander Donald B. Macmillan and 7 Bowdoin alumni along with Dr. David Potter a professor of botany at Clark University and 2 of his students set sail from Portland Maine on the 88' schooner the "Bowdoin" on June 16 1934. The letter opens with talks of him S. Braley Gray Jr. being "bothered" by writing a letter that won't be read for weeks" and then states "I might as well start with where I left off to them - and it's Eider Ducks now - never saw so many in my life - swarms of 'em as we entered Hopedale through a maze of volcanic - that is thousands of years ago - islands". He later states that "Hopedale is about the best looking of the Eskimo villages". The letter goes on to "An Eskimo took us about 15 miles to some island - where we shot some eiders & collected eggs for the scientists and the Bowdoin College Artic Museum". He also makes reference to the schooner Bowdoin in a gale storm from the east "the wind kept flipping them out of our hands - and evertime we bent over a wave would wash up our back under the oil skin coat". The letter closes with "the anchor has just gone over - so if I want to mail this 'twill have to be terminated" and signed "Love Braley". ‎1896 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF BUSINESS AND PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE AND THE HANDWRITTEN DIARY OF A NUGGET COLORADO GOLD MINER‎

‎NUGGET COLORADO GILPIN COUNTY. Very Good. 1896. On offer is a super archive of manuscript letters and a diary handwritten by Almon W. Howes who lived in Nugget Colorado as a gold miner. Mr. Howes does a great job describing his life and works in short entries over 63 pages that starts on April 6 1896 and ends on January 31 1898. Along with the journal there are also about 20 persoonal and business letters and documents that were received by him from various relatives and business associates some of the envelopes have a Nugget postmark that further flesh out and add depth to history of this miner's life. He begins on April 6 1896: "Began work for the Ohio K M & M Co. Made a relocation of The Little Lizzie and called it the Oakland. Lost my watch on the way over to the Louisa. Shoveled about 3 ft of snow off the top of the Louisa and cleaned snow out of shaft. Sunk 8 ft in snow to find dump of Oakland. Did not find it. Fine day." He worked on the Louisa shaft until 5/7/96 then started working on the Oakland which he says is 2'6" x 6' on the bottom. He is sending samples and snaking logs for the cabin. Here some more snippets and observations from the entries: took quartz out of the Oakland and white iron; Several other outfits coming in; They had to leave their cabin. Miner's meeting in Nugget; Living in a camp. Big storm w/houses blown down. Maud Estelle prospected for lead found honeycomb quartz sent a sample; E have not got a ten foot face yet; Finished the M & made another one called the Loyd Lee; Had the Loyd Lee surveyed working on cabin again; No food for a week other than bread and beans; Talking about the Topsy Mabel & Piedmont & Ingram claims taking measurements; Went to the Hoober Knocker Boomerange & Plateau mine; Cut timber to build a water closet; Located the Blue Betty lode. It is a relocation of the Scotch Lassie; Located the Trout Lode; Started working on the road; measured the Mabel measurements are listed Mabel is his claim; Elections working on his blacksmith shop; temperature is 15 below zero; working on tunnel again excavating; put off a shot explosion; went to Denver & had piece of steel removed from his eye paid $1.85 to record deed; back working in the tunnel; cleaned out my location hole on Loyd Lee; Trout Lode was surveyed & recorded $9.25 always working on tunnel; broke rock in tunnel; Got knocked out w/powder smoke; went to Loveless tunnel; Has been making timbers almost every day for some time; Went to see Placer; went fishing at Jim Peak Lakes; Went up Montana Hill & went to see the Victor; Fishing at Tellers Lake; Helping friend build a cabin; Begins work on the Mabel; Paid for Republican postage; Someone threatened to have him arrested if he did any more work on the Mabel; worked on the Mabel; Got a receipt from the Republican someone left on the stage; was sick for over a week; The Republication started today; started working on the Topsy; began a new hole in the Topsy; managed post office & store for someone who left town for a while; having trouble finding the lead in the third hole; Bad storm cabin shaking down to the foundation; his father died on Christmas Day; there was a forest fire; received a letter telling him to be ready to pull out for Alaska as soon as he gets word; Will start for Denver on Thursday to head for Klondyke. The book is 11 3/4" long and 5 1/4" wide and each of the 63 pages are full and there are a few more pages in the back of expenses. In very good shape save for some overall general soiling to the vellum as would be expected and a cracked inner front hinge. There are some handwritten words perhaps names of previous owners and some tiny notes on the title page.Title-page with small woodcut vignette.BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES: CLAUDIUS GALEN 131-201 was physician to five Roman emperors. He was a teacher philosopher pharmacist and leading scientist of his day. During his life he produced five hundred books and treatises on all aspects of medical science and philosophical subjects and his ideas were to formulate many of the scientific beliefs which dominated medical thinking for about 1 500 years. Galen was the great compiler and systemiser of Greco-Roman medicine physiology pharmacy and anatomy. Because he displayed a view of God and nature shared by the Christians of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance he was regarded by them as a fellow-Christian. This goes some way to account for the attitude of the Church towards free thinkers such as Paracelsus who challenged Galen's teachings. Galen's influence can be still seen today. An old dealer has indicated the book is form the library of the famed chief Justice John Jay Marshall which I am not able to confirm or deny. "Among the prominent Dutch Hebraists and theologians was Johannes Leusden from the University of Utrecht. One of his most important studies the Philologus Hebræus editio princeps Utrecht 1656 goes far beyond a philological research of the Hebrew language and is a comprehensive study of Judaism and Jewish life. " An entire chapter is devoted alone to Kabbalah and the Kabbalists. For those interested in bibliography there is a pioneering section detailing the known surviving manuscripts of the Bible. Leusden also edited very important editions of the Hebrew Bible including the fames 1661 Athias edition. ‎HARVARD BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA WISCONSIN. Very Good. 1911. On offer is the superb original manuscript journal and diary of Prof. Edgar C. Knowlton 1890-1978 noted linguist translator and author who in intimate detail writes of his life opinions and observations as an undergrad student at Harvard University living at Stoughton Hall. He is a super diarist who in this large page a day book dated January 1 1911 to December 31 1911 writes and over-writes pages on his friends and classmates his opinions on general society manners philosophy books movies social mores and much much more. This is an intimate peek at pre World War I America from the point of view of an intensely intelligent observer of himself the human condition and those around him. Knowlton also records his thoughts and ideas on various books and topics that he was reading or studying for his coursework at Harvard. Researchers and historians of the era would be hard pressed to find a more frank and honest diarist. BIO NOTES: Biography of Edgar C. Knowlton Edgar C. Knowlton was born on 19 Sept 1890 at Manchester New Hampshire the son of George and Alice Knowlton. His father was a druggist. Knowlton obtained his B.A. from Harvard University in 1912 his M.A. in 1913 and his Ph.D. in 1918. His "Potter Prize" dissertation was titled "Nature as an Allegorical Figure." After his schooling he entered the army and served in France during World War I. Knowlton began his teaching career in the public schools at Manchester where he is found living with his parents in the 1920 Census. He later worked at Lafayette College followed by stints at the University of Illinois Ohio Wesleyan and summer sessions at the University of Texas then at Stanford University and finally for many years in the University of Wisconsin system starting at the old La Crosse State College. He began teaching at La Crosse in 1935 the school later became part of the University of Wisconsin system. Knowlton had a reading knowledge of German French Latin Greek Danish Dano-Norwegian Welsh Old Irish Spanish and Italian. He spoke German and French. He wrote a book entitled An Outline of World Literature as well as contributions to a dozen and half books and periodicals. He also published translations of old Welsh poetry and was the co-author of a freshman English textbook. In 1920 Knowlton married Mildred Mason Hunt at Fall River Massachusetts and had a son Edgar C. Knowlton Jr born 1921 in Ohio while his father was teaching at Wesleyan. Edgar junior also became an academic teaching at the University of Hawaii. He was very fluent in languages as well proficient in even more than his father. He also became a widely published author and eventually a Professor Emeritus of European Languages at the University of Hawaii. A Festschrift in his honor "East Meets West" was published in 1988 by the University of Hawaii where it is stated that Prof. Knowlton was fluent in eleven languages with a working knowledge of fifteen others. Edgar Sr. appears to have retired from Wisconsin University La Crosse. He died while living at Wisconsin in November of 1978 at the age of 88 years and 1 month. For the first 112 pages the entries take up the entire pages though Knowlton is not bound by convention and carries on from one day to the next if he needs more writing space afterwards they become less full with the last third of the volume having brief entries and November and December very brief entries. Each page is one day. Harold rarely misses a day in the fifteen years represented in the three books from 1915 to 1929 where we see a young studious out going boy-next-door grow from 12 - 13 years old to 28 from a boy playing Bear and counting eggs for mom to a young teen taking motors apart playing sports fishing and chores to a loving husband with his sweetie Rachel to come home to and play board games at Christmas. Very active Harold perhaps a little obsessive documents everything he does from playing on South Denver baseball team school classes people sick of influenza chapel school Woodrow Wilson's death about a carnival playing poker car auction fever considering a job for $40 a month the Lacombe plant power plant bought a 1921 Chevy car $100.00 fixing his phonograph motor spring Deer Creek Canyon driving to Barstow San Bernadino a woman tried to drown her three kids in California Salt Lake City gold rush and much much more. The early diary is remarkable as the exuberant young Harold almost gushes each day about his joy for life and the people around him and even his idol Thomas Edison who inspires him to be an inventor. Harold goes on even at a very young age to gain some success with his inventions and has articles published in the magazine POPULAR MECHANICS. The war and the flu of 1918 and how it affected him and those around him will keep you enthralled. Though very brainy he is a typical All-American young man who loves in playing baseball working on his family's farm. He was very intuitive and detailed and his good character shines through. On offer is a sensational original December 30th 1940 - December 31st 1941 manuscript diary handwritten by a Sowerby Bridge England native Private Harry Wilson Winn ID No. 7627412 R.A.O.C . Royal Army Ordnance Corps that served with the famed 7th Division 'Desert Rats'. This extraordinary first-hand account by a dedicated and keen observer is jammed packed with historic entries describing life and service in North Africa and the Middle East from Haifa to Cairo to Tobruk Libya. From the mundane sometimes difficult sometimes fun filled life of a private in the Army to the unique other worldly matters of eating camel steaks to the intense descriptions of bombing raids enemy attacks deprivations and tragic loss are all encapsulated in this diary. He tells of the difficulties of living in a foreign environment suffering heat sores requiring a week in the hospital to the normality of going to the canteen for coffee and breakfast. He also mentions friends as they move or return or are convalescent he notes the native peoples and the other 'boys' like the New Zealanders and Aussies. He keeps up on the global picture of the War noting German movements politics Russia and American involvement and so much more. Truly one of the most packed diaries we have seen in a compact 6 x 3¾ inch book. Historians and researchers of the North African campaigns will be hard-pressed to find a more detailed observant and charming writer. He can be oh so droll: "News reports…Abyssinian trouble is finished. Ahem!" or punching the air in glee: "Orders say battle dress will not be worn until Dec 12th. Oh Yeah!" Each day is fully written in intense tight legible scrawl. Here are some snippets: "Lovely day. Air raid 7 am heavy bombs dropped on gun positions shook our billet"; "lovely day. Big cd gun opened out in reply to Gerry 7 am Gerry planes flew over to try locate his position"; "arrived in Tobruk from Alexandria - enemy raids overhead"; "artillery fire quiet but air raids as usual. Getting used to diving under bales of blankets in our tent. Posted on orders that I am now Class I Storeman. Slept in an air raid shelter outside of main office"; "work as usual. Sandstorm blowing all night. Very hot. 'stand to' still in force. Plenty of artillery. More dive bombing harbour lines. Saw bombs leaving plane". "27 planes brought down during last two days. More RAF planes arriving out here. RAF sunk German supply ships of coast of Tripoli. Heard that Yugoslavia will be compelled to give in." "Heavy air-raids dive-bombing and artillery fire. German attack repulsed and some tanks taken." He also keeps the book's month at a glance section with highlights and milestones: French ship "Andindo" sunk in harbour; HMS Terror sunk by enemy action off Libyan coast; ship carrying Italian POW's hit a mine killing many including Aussie guards; Tobruk is surrounded. And on and on and on until he writes on the last day of the year; "here ends my diary for 1941 - what has 1942 in store for me" Of further interest and really fascinating is the use of the diary memorandum pages to list events and milestones. For example he lists 36 different towns and places he saw in the year.
