‎1876 Handwritten Manuscript Journal Diary of MARY of Washington DC‎

‎Washington DC. Good with no dust jacket. 1876. Cloth. This charming journal was purchased from the great-great niece of the writer who was born in Washington DC just before the Civil War began. She was in her teens when she wrote over 100 pages in her hardback notebook in 1876. In exquisite penmanship she jotted down notes on history science biography religious and philosophical thought and other subjects of interest to a young woman with an inquiring mind in Victorian days. Mary or "Mamie" as she was known lived a long life of spinsterhood went blind in her old age and died in her mid-nineties in the early 1950's. In her final years Mamie "saw" the world through the eyes of her family and friends who visited her asking them endless questions about the way people and things looked in every detail. This curiosity reflects the spirit of the young woman who kept this notebook summarizing what she had learned about so many subjects. The book is well preserved given it's age. ‎1882 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A STUDENT/TEACHER IN WESTERN NEW YORK STATE UNDER THE THUMB OF A MEAN PRINCIPAL‎

‎Red Creek Clyde New York. Good. 1882. On offer is an 1882 handwritten manuscript diary once belonging to Minnie L. Caywood of Red Creek in Western New York State. On the face of it Minnie's life seems busy but simple and is detailed as such. Basic notations such as getting vaccinated; Minnie's great joy from receiving a valentine's card; her responsibilities as a student and job as a teacher; her part in the Literary Society; death of old schoolmate Clara Meade village of Clyde to name just a few. But then something terrible happens at the school. It is all the more uncomfortable as she boards and teaches. She is forgiven but others are not and the tension and stress creates a situation where the boys and girls are made to turn their backs if they meet in the halls or on the campus. For the most part we understand Professor Baker the principal is terribly mean and is the main conductor directing the investigation and punishment. He is also such a looming presence that there is almost a daily note until the summer regarding his distemper. "Prof. is mean today as usual.There is Prof. walking along the fence. O how I wish I had a stone.In the evening we all went to a concert…Prof. watched us quite carefully.Prof. gave the boys a fearful lecture for cutting the bell cord." A closer reading may very well reveal answers or even more mystery. Many names and details of travels in the area for supplies are recorded. ‎WACO TEXAS TX. Good. 1922. On offer is a super piece of early 20th century Texas Americana being a 1920s handwritten diary of a high school girl from Waco Texas. Ellen Barnett within the 86 pages of handwriting provides an amazing account of what life was like during the 1920's while living and attending high school in Waco. Of particular interest to Texas collectors and historians in this panorama of 1922 through 1930 will be the detailed entries on two important facets of Texas life at the time: football and the Ku Klux Klan. Although she does not write daily entries she writes quite a lot and she has a tremendous personality in many ways and the fact that her high school football team ends up making history as state champions in 1922 is a great thread throughout this journal. Her team the "old" Waco High Tigers were known for their famous coach Paul Tyson began his career in Waco in 1913. He was one of the best known and one of the most successful high school coaches in America. His teams at Waco played in seven state championship games including six consecutive 1922-27. Waco was state champions in 1922 1925 1926 and 1927 and runner up 1923 1924 and 1939. In 1927 Waco had one of the most dominant seasons in Texas high school football history. Ellen is very passionate about the football team and the games they play. She writes with great detail about many of the games has several pieces of ephemera inside representing her team and gets fired up on numerous occasions concerning specific games; almost to the point of tears. Ellen also tells of the Cotton Palace one of the most popular fairs in the South. June 3rd 1923 Ellen details the KKK parade through town and the description is riveting. Research informs us that in 1923 more then 2000 Klansmen paraded through the city and the organization boycotted businesses of people unsympathetic with its agenda. Many of the Waco's business and political leaders and Ellen seemed to implicitly support the Klan during this period and one member claimed that the Klan "controlled every office in the city of Waco" during the 1920's. Here are some snippets: 1922 "October 12th Last night or rather this morning at 5 a.m. the "hull" neighborhood with the exception of Mrs. Ivey and us were awakened by Mrs. Gentry's unearthly screams. "Help Help Come quick! Mr. Crow!!" Then she jumped in the car and went off. Everyone in our vicinity has been trying to find out what it was about. Mrs. Chapoton said that Mrs. Gentry went out to her car to go down and meet Mr. Gentry and there was a man sitting or rather sleeping in it. Then was when she screamed bloody murder. People a block off heard her. The man was a man who had been going to see her sister and he finally quieted her up no creo" "October 14th I didn't do much of anything today or rather this morning. But this afternoon mother and I went to town. I never saw so many old men loafing in front of Goldstein's……." "October 21st I wrote to Cardelia this morning and told her everything that popped into my head. I have to go to the post office this afternoon. Isn't it awful The Cotton Palace opens today with a parade at 10:30 a.m. and one at 7:00 p.m. It's the one I want to see. Governor Neff is to head the parade and 1500 Baylor students are to follow giving college yells and songs. I have no desire to go to the Cotton Palace except the night of the Queen's Ball and oh I want so much so much to see that for it must be beautiful and I know the one last year was for I saw that." "October 26th and 27th We are going to cook at the Cotton Palace tomorrow. "Aint we got fun"……We served donuts and love knots they were lovely……When we finished cooking we went to see the Art exhibit and all exhibits in the main building. Dennis had the best looking bed room suite out there I ever laid my eyes on it was perfectly beautiful. Then we went to the automobile exhibit and---oh to be rich! There were some of the best looking cars out there; Hudson's Cadillac's Packard's Nashe's and every other kind of 1923 models. Then in this building there were four real Hawaiians who played on guitar……Then we went down on the "War Path". They had a lot of stuff down there and Garrett wanted me to go in "Home Brew" It's a thing where you go in a room and they turn it around and you get sick so I didn't go. Some more side shows were "Coney Island" a place where you saw glass blowers and men eat fire "Noah's Ark" "Feeding the Chickens" "The Country Store" "The Old Mill" "The Wall of Death". Then there were fortune tellers galore and then they had Ferris wheels merry go rounds the whip and everything else imaginable……" "October 31st Halloween! And of all the pranks played they were played. The "merrymakers" stole cars held up street cars let the air out of automobile tires stole flowers broke windows broke the speed limit by going down Austin Ave real fast with several tubes tied on behind creating quite a noise. They also pulled the trolley's off the street cars. This lasted until about 12 p.m." "November 23rd WACO HI HAS NOT BEEN BEATEN YET!!!!! They have not been beaten in a game however they have been scored on. It made me so angry----when we got scored on. We just barely beat Milford 12 to 7. Isn't it awful We play Palestine at Corsicana tomorrow. I hope hope hope we win. But I'm sure we will…." "December 9th Waco won the game! And I'm so happy happy happy. 30 to 0. Yesterday a bunch of us were going out to the Cotton Palace to see the game. School closed at 1 p.m. so we started and had walked about 5 blocks when imagine Barry picked us up and took us on out there. The bleachers and the grand stand were pushed in a little while. Then an areoplane from Temple flew over and dropped a big roll of canvas. On it was this a message to the wild cats "Fight em Wildcats." Two Temple boys carried it all over the field and let everyone see it. Then the game started both sides fought hard when suddenly Boody Johnston made a touch down. The 12000 fans simply went wild! Oh how the Tigers did fight!! The Wildcats fought just as hard but the Tigers fought them. Then they brought the most wonderful thing I ever hope to see!! It was some flowers in the shape of a football……" 1923 "January 3rd I never did write about that wonderful K.K.K. parade I saw the other night. There was the awfulest jam downtown on Austin Street. About 50000 I think. There was supposed to be 10000 Klansmen take part in the parade but something happened to the train that was to bring them here so only 2500 took part. There were no locals in the parade. Then it took them 28 minutes to pass. They were in full regalia and masked. I'm for the Klu Klux!!!! I am. They are strong too. They looked wonderful on horseback with the great beautiful fiery cross leading them. Then in the parade they had the original 1866 in cars. They had grey hair and grey beards and it gave me such a thrill to think that maybe one of these had helped save our forefathers after that awful civil war. Everyone cheered them. They deserved to be cheered." Right after this passage on a different date and in pencil she writes: "I'm not for em now though. April 20th 1924." On a trip to San Antonio in August of 1923. She writes about supper at a place called the "Original" talks about San Pedro Park Brekenridge and the Japanese Gardens White Horse Tavern Empire Theatre and more. 1924 "November 22nd Well Waco High has played and won many games since I've written in here. The next game we played was with Corsicana with Corsicana. I did not get to go but we won 43 to 0. I was delighted of course. Then we played Waxahachie here on the Cotton Palace gridiron. I heard the game at Mr. McCurdy's over the radio. Waxahachie scored first and naturally I nearly went wild. But when Waco did start scoring OH Boy! The final score was 24 to 7. Waco was tickled pea green and purple. Right after the game we decided to have a parade. So we got in a long line and started from the Cotton Palace gates and walked and ran running most of the way right up Clay Avenue. Everyone screaming at the top of their voices. We held up automobiles and street cars. We ran right through the signals on 8th street and on down Austin with everyone grinning at us……" Then she describes a trip to Dallas and goes to The Majestic Highland Park Fair Park Grounds Scenic Railway called "The Lightening" the Jefferson Hotel and their $50000 fountain and the Grand Parade. These type of entries from her high school years stop on December 7th 1926. She then starts writing again on August 5th 1929 telling of her trip to Corpus Christi and San Antonio which is 4 pages long. After that is another trip on June 24th 1930 to Arkansas and Reservation Mt. and the Belvedere Nightclub. That trip consists of 3 ½ pages. Because Ellen writes in a large ledger that measures about 8" x 12.5" you get a lot of writing per page. As with all diaries lots of names are mentioned. In Ellen's she talks about; Leslie Davis Ernest Waldorf her teachers Waller Christian and Payne. Also Joe McClain Garnett Dodson Dell Scott Moorman Elizabeth Comley Boody Johnson Miss Leslie George Fall Wier Washam Charlie Taylor Tyson Burl Hotman Armstrong Claude Meadows and more. One of the pieces of ephemera is a city brochure from 1925. It has several business' represented inside such as; Morrison's Famous Soda Fountain Stratton-Stricker Furniture Elite Café hardin Kelly Drug Co. The Thompson Studio Purity Ice Cream Co. Hippodrome Theatre Stringfellow's Barber Shop Cayle Printing Co. Ed Bauerle Jewelry and a few more. ‎NEW YORK. Good. 1897. Manuscript. On offer is the handwritten manuscript diary of the extraordinary Dr. Charlton Thomas Lewis a well known lawyer lecturer thinker and educator from New York. He was noted for his Greek lectures partook in all the literary functions of the day and going to the Shakespearean and Author's clubs there in New York. He also was the Deputy Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service an actuarial expert on insurance and speaker at Harvard and Yale to name two. He also loves to dine at the best hotels such as the 5th Ave. and Astor House. He has such a passion for the theatre books and the arts. The "Annual report of the prison association of New York" Says he was born in West Chester Pa. on the 25th of February 1834. His father was Joseph J. Lewis commissioner of internal revenue under President Lincoln and Johnson. His grandfather was a prominent leader and educator in the Society of Friends Quakers. He was married twice. He wrote numerous books and papers including the "Elementary Latin Dictionary." The diary dated 1897 shows his address at 32 Nassau Street New York. Directories show that "The Mutual Life Insurance Company" has it's office at this address another company he worked for. Noteworthy is that he rides his "wheel" bicycle passionately In October he says "Cyclometer 1150 ½ 1522 since May 30th." January 1st finds Charlton in Germany celebrating a new year. February 4th he sails for home. Here are snippets: 1897 "January 2nd A dreary day drizzle and chill outside. Stay in all morning writing and reading chiefly finishing sermons compositions and arranging papers. Letters from N.Y. and Copenhagen. Telegraph Risely and write Mclintock. P.m. read "Monitor" carefully through. At 7 to residing theatre. ______finely played especially "Teia" and "Frity". The idea of each of these short plays is the conflict of man in the immediate prospect of death but all is fearlessness in each case no illustration of the weak spirit in pain." "February 3rd Arose early walked about the city. Call at steamer office and drove 40….Lunch at hotel. Call on Coltelette's then go shopping for chain umbrella pipe for Charlty and Jean. To bank then drive around Caro with fine views of city and back to hotel. Dine at Cotelette's bachelor apartment. Fine pictures and luxurious arrangement. 121 steps from ground to 6th floor and on high hill with great view. London mail brings me but one letter from Jas McKeen Jan. 22nd." "February 4th Shop for pipe and hat find no shipper or paper net. Wait long on ship but sail just before noon. Keep close to coast from Genoa to Monaco magnificent views of Rivera and mountains behind. Summer on back ground of imprints of snow and ice. On sea passengers few and dull. Read "Schumer seele". Expected cable from Munich fails. Also letters. Telegram from Sigman." "February 6th At noon today 117 miles from Gibraltar. A bright day of sunshine with sharp clear horizon and smooth sea keeping close to the Spanish coast with fine views of shore and of mountains most of the day with scenes of rice fields and of the Sierra Nevada inland in full view. Bath 7 a.m. Ocean lovely. Read little. At 8 p.m. reached Gibraltar. Went ashore with Mr. and Mrs. Goodman and Mrs. Lawn and others with guide and walked about streets and shops and saw Gmeua's house etc. Splendid moonlight views of harbor etc." "February 11th At noon run again 343 miles. This ends prospect of landing Monday. Sea grows rougher decks out steerage passengers soaked from waves. They roll right into their quarters. Still a large share of passengers at meals. No sails seen all day." Goes on to say that the captain is changing course to avoid a hurricane but then says he saw a cyclone. Then on February 16th they finally land and are in Quarantine. "March 10th ….take 4:10 on N.W. for Chicago by ______kee with W. S. Walker and Hamilton to Palmer House. Letters from ______ at _____and in Chicago. Night and day rest at Palmer House." "April 21st McClintock thrown from carriage as Bill reported first dead then much injured. Took 12 m train and found him sitting up head badly cut no permanent injuries. Short wheel ride. Mary to N.Y. to see "Tempest" alone." "July 18th Rode to Sag Harbor by breakfast. Bathe in bay a.m. Ride p.m. to call on Maud and Mr. Dunning May Mrs. & Jas. Gotin. In all 20 m. today. Heavy rain during night. Rode 40 m. on Montauk Wheel." "October 22nd Evening dinner at lawyers club with Ruggles Brise and Ketchem. Dr. Flint and Baum Ian McKeen Jackson _____ failed. On offer is the remarkable original manuscript travel diary and charming relic of early 20th century Americana handwritten by Edwin Thomas who was a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the diary covers his journey from New York out west to go to the Meeting of the Engineers in 1911. Over ten 10 pages Thomas does a super job writing a very nice account of seeing the Grand Canyon seeing Indians seeing the "Suicide Bridge" in Chicago and much more. Here are some snippets: Catasauqua Left home 12:35 Dale and Helen Wilson accompanying us to station. I have been peculiarly ill for about 2 weeks but have been reserving strength for this trip and started out very encouragingly I am happy to surf. Felt a wonderful sense of relief as I pulled out west-ward for my great Has been I would be compelled to give it up. Arrived in Chicago twenty minutes late. Mr. Sowders was at the station to meet Ed. We hired a Pierce Arrow Car and had a most beautiful ride through part of the most attractive part of the city. The pleasantest part being along the Lake Front where there were many beautiful home….The driver called our attention to Suicide Bridge where many have ended their lives. There is some one on guard day and night but in spite of this over five hundred are said to have jumped over board. Later Ed took us to the annex which was most fascinating. It was really luxurious and we saw the real life of Chicago. After roaming about for an hour seeing the sights gay men and women etc we drove to the Dearborn Street station where I at once recognized a member of the Engineers. Left Chicago late on account of Mr. and Mrs. Pierce and daughter who failed to make connections on account of a wreck. Made a few minutes stop at La Junta just long enough to get a breath of fresh air and lake a part at the granite log house with its fascinating fire places and surroundings in general. At 11 AM we drew into Albuquerque New Mexico. Where we had fifty minutes. The station and Indian room was most interesting. Finding it very warm I retired to my state room to be comfortable. By doing this I missed seeing the Indian Village at Laguna which I regretted exceedingly. Most of the passengers climbed to Adok village and returned most enthusiastic. In one house I am told they saw a sewing machine lace curtains and everything was most emaculate. The El Tovar Grand Canyon of Arizona Oct 3.…We had a long monstrous ride but when we reached our destination we felt doubly repaid. We lunched on the rocks over looking this grand chasm which is indescribably wonderful. A thing most thrilling and when once seen can never be forgotten. The view here not only extends across this wondrous abyss but far beyond into the painted desert. We saw where they have removed copper. Our first stop was at the Thor's Hammer of which I have a post card. I had heard much of the Canyon but to see it ones self is the only way to realize and appreciate its wonderful grandure. As I stood on the brink of this wonderful panorama which never looks to be the same for there are incessant changes caused by the different lights and shadows. I was told the distance across is from ten to thirteen miles. It is more than 6000 feet below the level of the plateau. We wandered into the Hopi House to watch the Indian women and men dance as well as little wee Indians who looked eagerly for dimes and nickels. Their song and dance soon grows monotonous and we remained but a short time. The El Trovar is most attractive. It is a long low rambling rustic but solidly built house. Its nature boulders and pine logs adds to its architecture….The most expert basket weavers and pottery makers are found here." ‎Southfield Michigan Oakland County. Good. 1898. On offer is an original 1898 manuscript diary handwritten by Joseph E. Mcclelland of Southfield Michigan in Oakland County. Born in September 1864 he was 33 years old at the writing. Joseph was the Township Supervisor and he does a super job in this tiny diary detailing his daily activities many dozens of visitors by name going to socials attending a surprise party being nominated and elected for Township Supervisor Supervisors meetings in Pontiac going out taking assessments making out road warrants going to Detroit and seeing one of his girls "C.M.W." going to the Sand Hill Fair and then sadly he writes his Father having strokes of paralysis his death and funeral an much much more over the 365 entries. Historians and collectors of the area will find besides the super historical entries 11 pages with ledger entries. He also kept track of letters he wrote to a woman that he was seeing. Here are some snippets: "Drove team over to Beddow to get the shod then went to Chase Smith in evening we all went to Margaret McClellands . Went to Franklin to hear Prof. Ferris lecture took Mary Miller for company . Mary Logan and I went to Frank Harmon's to social in evening . ‎Collegio Romano ROME ITALY. Good. 1807. Original Vellum. On offer is an original handwritten Latin mathematics manuscript detailing the instruction and works of Abbot Giuseppe Calandrelli 1749 - 1827 who was a famous Italian astronomer and mathematician. After the Jesuit order was suppressed after the direction of the Collegio Romano was given over to priests from other orders young Calandrelli perfected his scientific studies and became the substitute for his maestro Father François Jacquier. He earned many prestigious titles: giving physics lessons after the professor died; director of the Accademia di Fisica entrusted by the Pope to bring electricity to the Papal Palace on the Quirinal Hill among others. He founded a school of astronomy in Rome. This manuscript dated 1807 is divided in IX books and is adorned with 24 original folding drawings in the end. On the frontispiece there is a Masonic drawing. Ex libris of Andrae Belli surgeon official and doctor at the hospital of Santa Maria della Consolazione in Rome. This manuscript is assuredly the geometry textbook Andrea Belli used for his mathematics lessons in Rome at the Collegio Romano with Giuseppe Calandrelli. Original full vellum binding. ‎LA PRAIRIE BOWEN ILLINOIS. Good. 1919. On offer is an archive of nine 9 in total original manuscript diaries three 1912 1914 and 1915 handwritten by Miss J. Maie Garwood a 23 year old and six 1917 1918 1919 1924 1925 and 1927 diaries handwritten by T.J. Garwood an older woman b. Dec. 20 1950 perhaps Maie's mother. The family lived in or near Bowen and La Prairie Illinois with frequent mention of Hannibal Bentley Plymouth Quincy Augusta and Keokuk. Historians and collectors of the area will find entries about oil that was discovered in the area in 1914 and about the oil men coming around plus much more local history and genealogy. Both diarists do a super job keeping record of all the births deaths and marriages in the area. We read with some delight at Maie's entry on April 2nd 1914 where she talks about have a "carpet rag tacking" party and invites the whole neighborhood. She lists the names of everyone there. Here are some snippets: "February 6th Real nice day. We washed in the forenoon. In the afternoon Hazel and Jessie called and I cut out a dress for Jessie. John went to haul hogs for M. E. Randall then went to Dave Sapp's for sawdust. Bob Mchone and a Harris fellow called to invite us to a dance at Frank Plowman's tomorrow night. They wanted Len to play but he declined. Marion Boman and George Nunn pulled in about 7:30 tonight for supper preparatory to hulling clover tomorrow." "March 26th Nice day. Hank and I went to town in the forenoon. Found the roads worse than we expected to find them but we drove the ____ so reached home in safety. Mama did the housework and ironed. In the afternoon we commenced the quilting. Len and John worked in the timber. At night all the boys took their "horses" and dogs out for a hunt. The derby dog got hung in the fence and Len had to go over to him. He had to carry him on home." On offer is the original 1900 manuscript diary handwritten by a woman in or around Berkshire County Massachusetts with many mentions of trips to Sheffield Stockbridge Hillsdale Ashley Falls Housantonic etc. and while the author's name is not mentioned we believe she is a member of Higgins family given the frequent and method of mentioning of contacts. The author celebrates her 13 year wedding anniversary on March 3rd. From her entries we learn that she raises canaries has a very difficult time keeping warm in her home spends time at their cottage attends lawn parties and band concerts and one very interesting entry she talks about how they "were up so much last night with the Negroes" that they slept all the next day. Here are some more snippets: "January 26th A fierce nor western blew all day and all night. I churned and the rest of the time tried to keep warm. It was a fearful night. I scarcely kept warm in bed in a warm room. All home. Leroy Tobey has a daughter born." "February 11th Variable somewhat cloudy. Fred's lame side is pretty bad so he went up to see the Dr. Jury in Moline case brought in a verdict of guilty of murder in first degree. I still believe him innocent. ‎PRUSSIA ON TO RUSSIA. Fair. 1915. On offer is an original unique WWI German soldier's diary handwritten by Josef Baur D.R.G.M. No. 615788 as he identifies himself of the "Infantry Reg. 121; 8 Komp; II Batt 13; 26 Div." This 1915 pocket sized booklet provided for all German soldiers has writing on most of its pages; a German to French dictionary in the back of the booklet and a faded image of the German Kaiser on the front cover. For the most part Baur provides the reader with an idea of the troop movements that his unit follows as they move from Central Germany through Prussia. Their destination is the Eastern Front. Random notes and snippets: his father: Wilhelm Baur: mentions of the towns of Eigenzingen Rothenburg Karlsruhe Freiburg Lüttersbach Bromberg in the Prussian province of Posen; on the 7th page he has a title that ends in "Rußland" Russia; marching commenced 12 September at 8 o'clock marched until 10 o'clock; 13. On offer is a sensational archive of twelve 12 original manuscript diaries all handwritten by Maria Diven second wife of General Alexander Samuel Diven who married Maria his junior by 25 years in 1876 after the death of his first wife Amanda Beers who died in 1875. The diaries represent the years of their lives in 1891 1892 1896 1897 1900 1902 1906 1907 1911 1910 1912 and 1917. Save for the last year when her health declines and there are entries in only the first third of the year she writes rather densely throughout. In the early years they were living at their home called Hazzard's Bluff on River Point Road just across the river from Jacksonville Florida. In later years they are based in Brooklyn. Their Florida estate was built in an area well known for the many wealthy Northerners that settled their after the civil war. Collectors and historians of the area and the era will no doubt find a treasure trove of details of what life was like living as a very wealthy and prominent family along the St. John's River. The family seems to travel around by yacht and launches a lot and in the company of other prominent Generals and Colonels. There are lavish parties trips on the yacht trips to their Elmira New York home plenty of socials sitting on the piazza and much much more. This is a large wealthy family with much on the go all described in great detail. At the turn of the century we find the family based in Brooklyn for most of the year then head to Orange County in the fall. They also take a longish trip in the West and the mountains visiting and every other conceivable activity and adventure. This is a look with a breathtaking vista of breadth and depth by an articulate intelligent woman of means and position. BIO NOTES: Alexander Samuel Diven soldier politician businessman popular Board of Director for the New York & Eire Railroad had a distinguished military career along with other outstanding accomplishments. He was the grandson of John Means and Elizabeth Clark and great grandson of Robert Means and Jane Irving sister of General Irving of the Continental Army. Online sources say he was born in 1809 but in these diaries his wife says he celebrated his 74th birthday in 1893 which makes his birth year 1819. Also from another source: 'There's a big house with columns at 4915 River Point Road. It's not brick though it's wood but you may have thought it was painted brick. In 1850 the first circular steam sawmill in Florida was built at the mouth of Pottsburg Creek. After the Civil War in 1876 the old Empire Mill site was sold to Alexander S. Diven a general in the Union Army and Congressman from New York. Apparently he was just one of many Northerners who settled along the southern bank of the St. Johns River after the War. The house was built around 1877 and the property contained 34 acres at that time. The timbers used to construct the house are huge some 10" by 12". They were taken from the log pond next to where the old mill had been. The foundation and chimney are made from bricks that were made at the claypit one-quarter mile from the homesite. General Diven started a grove of 700 orange trees on this site with their own irrigation system. This grove continued until 1952 and the last of these trees was killed by the Christmas Freeze of 1983. I don't know if you were in Jacksonville then BJ but it snowed and school was out for days due to power outages and icy streets. Major Joseph Durkee another Union officer was County Sheriff State Senator and railroad executive. His son Dr. Jay Durkee bought this home in 1909 from General Diven's son. in 1952 Major Durkee's grandson developed the adjacent 90 acres into a subdivision and named it "Empire Point" after the area where his old family home still stands.' ‎PHILLIPSBURG NEW JERSEY NJ. Good. 1858. On offer is an interesting pre Civil War handwritten relic of New Jersey Americana being the original 1858 manuscript journal and diary of Elias D. Smith of Phillipsburg New Jersey who would go on to serve as a Quarter Master Sergeant in the 14th New Jersey Volunteers during the Civil War. In a sporadic manner many days he wrote a full page about what he did and how he felt and about the people places and events of the day. He would also expound on some point of politics or a moment in history and its affect on America or the State. Historians and researchers concerned with the politics of religion American sentiment about their old Colonial masters the British and commerce and trade the social scene the arts and the era in general will find a wealth of opinion and observation by Mr. Smith who begins with a flourish: "Sacred To The Memory of By-gone Days" he writes then dating the commencement at 1858. This is a large 10½ x 8¼ inch page-a-day journal and while Elias is sporadic in entries - he writes almost daily from January 3rd the first page has been excised through March 15th but none until September 22nd and then off and on until the 1st of December - he writes densely filling most pages entirely. Here's a snippet: "Mrs. Harris and Phebe on Tract Society business & I do wonder how she ever made up her mind to come out in such a rain as she did to come here. While she and Mother and Mat were busy with their tracts Phebe Martha Hill Walter and I played Monkey cards and Masqueraders and such like. We also had some singing - tip-top of course - and so we fooled around the evening. I say fooled because it certainly seemed a waste of time and yet I could think of nothing else to entertain the company." ‎TACOMA WASHINGTON USA. Good. 1890. On offer is the original 1890 manuscript diary handwritten by Charles J. Leavitt who states in his own hand: "C. J. Leavitt. Born in Ripley Maine April 8th 1868. Moved to Sherman Mills Maine with parents about 1878. Migrated alone to Red Cloud Nebraska March 1887 he was only 18 years old when this happened. On to Sunshine Washington about later part of July same year. On to Tacoma Washington in September 1887 and to Newberg Oregon October 30th 1890. C. J. L." Mr. Leavitt was an historical figure and is featured prominently in a book called "The Centennial History of Oregon; 1811-1912." The book states: "C. J. Leavitt. Among the more recently established business enterprises of Newberg but one which however is meeting with substantial success is the C. J. Leavitt Realty company of which C. J. Leavitt was the organizer and is now serving as president. The width of the continent separates him from his birthplace for he was born in Maine the date of his nativity being the 8th of April 1868. He is the son of Joseph T. and Amanda M. Patten Leavitt who were also natives of the Pine Tree State where his mother passed away in 1878.….He was only 18 years of age when he determined to try his fortune in the west and for six months he made his home in Nebraska after which he went to Washington. Five years were spent in the latter state and then in 1891 he made his way to Oregon locating in Newberg Yamhill County. Here he was engaged for two years in the lumber business." The diary starts off with Mr. Leavitt living on a ranch in Orting Washington but he goes back and forth from Tacoma working as a logger and talks about working around the Point Defiance area. On several pages of the diary he has added some notes retrospectively in 1925 adding further details to was written. For example on February 20th 1925 he picks up his old diary and writes this note on the page representing July 15th and 16th 1890: "This camp where I and B_____worked at this time was at what is now 1925 known as the Point Defiance Park Tacoma Washington. I am the party who fell the large timber on the park ground. The timber was mostly riling and boom sticks some made saw timber. The stumps with spring boards holes in sides are to be seen in the park at the present time. C. J. Leavitt 2/20/1925" He has several of these later notations throughout the diary. But every day from January through August 25th has a handwritten entry for the year 1890. Here are some snippets: 1890 "January 3rd Cool clear day. Went to "Roy" for groceries. Registered letter to St. John's Medicine Co. One dollar. Got shaved. Came home called Patterson. Bright moonlight night." "January 14th Snow fell. Big flakes and fast time. At Jim Kennedy's. Went back to ranch got breakfast provisions closed house. Slept over night with Kennedy. Left letter from "Hobbs" about cutting rails." "January 15th Wind blows cold. Sun shine bright. After dinner went to A. Delhurst. Mr. Shaw gave him one dollar. Took 6:30 train for Tacoma. Went to the new Tacoma Theatre. Play "A trip to Africa" by J. C. Duffs Comic Opera Company. Stayed at Globe Lodging House." "March 10th Went to Orting got check cashed. $15.82. Missed train. Walked to Alderton with Jack Meek. Took Gravel Train no 6335 for Tacoma. Stopped at Boca for driver. On offer is a super archive of nine 9 original manuscript diaries very full and descriptive of the rural life and times in and around Milton in south-central Ontario. Dated 1872 through 1883 missing 1873 1880 and 1882 the author while unidentified in fact we suggest his name is Nelson Green. There are a number of references to the Green family and some ephemeral clues that local historians genealogists and collectors of the Milton Cayuga and Hamilton Ontario area should no doubt be able to confirm his identity. The author leads the simple yet extraordinarily hard life of a church going farmer lumber and quarryman with a horse charmingly named "Timber". Nelson does a very good job mentioning the names of visitors business contacts and the births and deaths and other local events faithfully. He does not live in Milton proper but almost daily he travels there to deliver wood or ice in winter or stone or apples etc. Sometimes he'll make the trip to Hamilton or Cayuga and another number of smaller places like Six Ridges New Celedon Burlington Beach Brontey sic Harvey's Mill Flamborough. Mere months before the Russian Revolution in October 1917 makes for an interesting relic of the times. ‎1896 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY DETAILING THE LIFE AND TIMES OF AN ITINERANT BRAMPTON ONTARIO TEACHER AND SOMETIME SCIENTIST AND SCHOLAR‎

‎HAMILTON PORT STANLEY AMHERSTBURG CANADA WEST. Good. 1896. Hardcover. On offer is an original manuscript diary dated 1896 handwritten by Theo C. Linn a Brampton Ontario Canada man who travels a lot to Manitoba including Winnipeg Portage La Prairie Brandon and High Bluff Manitoba. He also mentions a number of Ontario towns such as Arden McGregor and of course always Brampton. He's an itinerant teacher bit of a scientist and scholar has a wife named Lottie two young girls named Nora and Rena and on March 2nd his third daughter Vera is born. Fully written and uniquely Lottie writes when Theo can't. Included ephemera includes two photos that are glued to the inside front and back covers. It appears to be Theo and his wife and one of the two younger daughters while in bed. Historians and researchers of the era will have many clues to flesh out Theo's life as we learn: Theo's birthday is on July 13th; Lottie's 27th birthday is on October 29th; Theo's parents wedding anniversary is on July 13th; Theo's and Lottie's wedding anniversary is on June 30th. The diary begins with Theo is teaching school but not around home and has to travel and stay away sometimes during the week but during the fall of this year the family moves as he gets a job teaching in the school at Arden. Here are snippets: 1896 "January 3rd His Another very cold day forty four below zero. Clinton and Elliott here for tea. I have made final arrangements to take charge of Elliott's school." "January 6th His Elliott drove me out to his school this morning and I took charge. Small school only fourteen present. Warm day. Went to Mr. Young's to board this evening." "January 12th His News. Seven of Bowitt's ministers have resigned but Nick thinks he can yet pull through. The English and German's are having a row over the Dr. Jameson Raid against the Boers." "February 5th His Another grand day. Am again staying after four to write this. Had eighteen at school today. Am going to study Latin tonight. I intend to have my previous standing in May." "February 11th His A blustery day. Cold but clear. Studied French in evening. Am anxious about Lottie. Have been dreaming about her nearly every night." "February 15th His Cold day. The diary measures 3" by 4 ½" and the pages and binding look great but the cover is pulling away at the spine. ‎ST. LOUIS MISSOURI BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS KEWANEE IL. Good. 1926. On offer is an original very charming archive of three 3 small diaries handwritten by Marion Butterwick an artist and designer from Kewanee Illinois. The diaries are dated through the Roaring 20s through to the start of the depression years of 1926 through 1930. Marion Butterwick b. May 5th 1908 - d. January 26th 2004 was well known for her sculptures abstract paintings and sketches. Small books 2 ½" x 3 ½" they cover four years of college with time spent in St Louis and Boston. The first book starts September 13 1926 as she leaves Kewanee Illinois on train and arrives at college in St Louis detailing college life: football game at Taylor Field; rallies and bonfires; gym; homework; study hall; Sunday school; shopping; coming back home from college then returning after semester break; swimming; basketball practice and much more. The second starts with September 11 1927 and another trip from Kewanee to St Louis to college. This diary indicates Marion was much more involved with clubs groups outings and a bit more socializing; plenty notes on classes and daily college life in 1927. Diary 2 is has about half used. The third book she titles: "Year in Boston" 1929-1930. Marion was attending college in Boston as the notes talk again about classes assignments social events of all kinds tea opinions and impressions on Boston church notes socializing travels and sights around Boston. Second half of this diary is labeled as the 2nd year at school in Boston. Diary 3 is like the first book almost full. Researchers and historians will be delighted with this treasure trove on the personal intimate life and development of a known artist in her formative college days. The diaries come with a small desk top holder. All are covered in a fabric which has started to fray in a few places. ‎1862 ORIGINAL INTRIGUING MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A PENNSYLVANIA CIVIL ENGINEER AND SCHOOL TEACHER WHO INSISTS HE IS "INNOCENT OF ALL CHARGES"‎

‎ELMIRA WILLIAMSPORT LUZERNE COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA. Fair. 1862. On offer is an original rather enigmatic and very intriguing 1862 manuscript diary handwritten by A. K. Jacobs a 22 year old man he is 23 years old on December 23rd who at the beginning of the diary was a teacher at Eckley School and going to White Haven in Luzerne County. Soon he tires of teaching a Mr. Tarbox takes over and Mr. Jacobs heads to Philadelphia then to Harrisburg Williamsport Elmira and finally ends up on the shores of Lake Erie where starts an engineering/surveying job research finds a civil engineer A. K. Jacobs in the 1880 census living in Lock Haven Pennsylvania born in 1840 and married to a Mary and no doubt the same author of this book. Historians and researchers of the era and the region will find a number of intrigues. In one case he seems to be caught up in some kind of scandal or legal troubles. He writes: "August 9th Received a letter from L. Hyndman. Heard what the people at Eckley think of me. Have from all accounts a pretty hard name but am innocent of all the charges." In another circumstance that while there is hardly mention of the Civil War but Jacobs left drafts of two different letters in the back of the book on the blanks one to a women he loves named Emma and the other a 'Letter to the Editor' and in part it reads: "….The last battle before Richmond has caused the people in this Erie and adjoining counties to mourn for friends and relatives who laid down their lives for their country. They were principally of the 83rd Reg. Pvt. Col. McLane who was a citizen of Erie I believe was pretty badly cut up when he returned to camp……" Here are other snippets: 1862 "January 1st Had a good crowd all day at the bar. Fell very tired at night." "April 9th Wrote to J. L. Hyndman. Spent a very unpleasant day in school. Scholars very troublesome and mischievous. Felt bad because Jane did not give me an answer when I wanted to go up with her to Mary's." "April 12th Went to White Haven in the afternoon. Brought a horse wagon over. Took Jane out to the valley. Had quite a happy time. Got back at 4 o'clock. Stayed with her till two." "April 23rd Taught as usual. Made arrangements to stay with Jane. Attended church at the Episcopal Church. Had quite an exciting time with Jane. She got excited and got a fit." "May 23rd Lieut. C. Straw and Jack Durst visited me this forenoon. School small today." "May 28th Came back to Eckley this morning. I am going to quit teaching and am going into Engineering. Leave next Monday. Went to Jeddo after school. Engaged Mr. Tarbox to take my school next week." "May 31st Came back to Eckley ran around and settled my business. Stayed with Jane. Had a good time. Retired about 3 o'clock. Took Jane out riding had a nice time." "June 4th in Philadelphia Spent the day in visiting the Navy Yard. Evening went to the theatre. Welch arrived today." "June 6th Looking up some records to assist us in the survey. Left Williamsport at 6 in the evening for Elmira. Arrived there at 4 in the morning. The train being detained by the freight train running off track." "June 7th Ran around Elmira visited the Water Cure. E. is quite a city. Left E. for Erie at 5 in the afternoon. Arrived in Erie at 2 o'clock Sunday morning. Went to bed at 3. Slept very sound." "June 15th Went to church in the morning. Afternoon went down to the Lake. Went aboard a vessel there. Welch sketched Presque Island." in Belle Valley "July 20th Spent the day at Stranahan. Had a good time with Jennie in the evening. Am going to take her to the ball on Friday next." "July 21st & 22nd Moved our boarding place to Concord. Worked on the line and distributed stakes. Ran up to Corry….Worked on Hu Line. Did a good says work after which went to Huron for supper then to Stranahan's intending to come back but being prevailed upon to stay. We did. Stranahan and family are fine folks." "July 25th Worked all day. Evening took Jennie Stanahan to a ball. Had a good time. Kept it up till day light." "July 27th Arose at 8 o'clock. Took breakfast and went down to Stranahan's. Heard of some remarks made about my being "Light" at the ball last Friday night. Not true." "August 10th Went to Corry to a war meeting held there. Saw quite a crowd. Took dinner at the Boston House with George McBride engineer on the passenger train." "September 2nd Welch and I went to Spring Creek. I had a good time with Miss Emma and we had a glorious time all around. Am going to correspond with her Miss Emma. She is a mighty fine girl." "October 22nd & 23rd Met Emack Davison. Garden party on the train. Came down with them and had a time with them….Stopped at the boarding house all day. Made drafts of bridges." "November 6th Received a letter from Beisel. Run levels. Weather quite cold. Fire feels comfortable. David Tate I am to pay 25 cents. Attended an apple cut in the evening at Capt. Graham's. Had a nice time." "November 21st Spent the day at the boarding house. Attended a performance by Rivers Troupe in the evening. Very good performance." "December 19th Went to Pittsfield and stopped all night. Attended a ball at Warner's Hotel. Met Emma there. Spent an hour pleasantly with her. Retired about 3 o'clock." Much of the diary was written in pencil and a few of the entries are a bit faded and smudged. There are a total of 227 days worth of entries and the back is also filled up with expense entries and additional notes. Much of those blank pages are from January 2nd to March 30th and then the entries become more regular. On offer is a super manuscript relic of 18th Century religious devotion being a vellum covered notebook titled 'Memoria' handwritten by Carlo Antonio Di Cesare a Jesuit in Naples between 1744 and 1764. Superbly intimate look into the life of this Catholic man using the book as a 'vade mecum' or catchall thusly a diary of notes detailing the life of this Jesuit scholar: it begins with his graduation into the Congregazione de' studenti sotto la protezzione dell'Annunciata of the Jesuit College Gesù Vecchio in Naples to study 'Logic' under Professore Giuseppe Guidone. On 24 November 1744 he passes his exam Confessione generale di tutta la vita and joins a Rosicrucian Brotherhood. What follows are his notes comprised of various lists: financials such as receipts and expenditures; what appears to be an inventory of a Library "Nota de' libri che tengo in Napoli 30. lugl. 1749" or a reading list with the last entries dated November 1764. ‎CHENGTU SICHUAN PROVINCE CHINA. Good. 1909. On offer is a simply super archive of three 3 historically significant manuscript diaries and journals authored and handwritten by Dr. Will P. Sheridan and his wife Mary W.P. dated 1909 1910 and 1911. Curiously inscribed noting that the diary is primarily Will's but Mary does the actual writing. The largish two-days to a page Grand & Toy 8½ x 7 inch journal style books sent by Toronto friend Ethel Cassidy are filled with this extraordinary Canadian missionary and doctor's narrative while in China at the C.M.M. General Hospital Chengtu. Rarely missing days though the 1911 book was delivered to China late but pages from another notebook are enclosed. The writings run from the mundane duties of daily life observations regarding Chinese medical methods comparing Western methods and all matters of day to day life like their 4th Wedding Anniversary on Oct. 16th 1911 their baby Virginia adoringly referred to as 'Little Girl Baby' plus almost daily fully written descriptions and opinions of this couple with a keen observant eye and obviously accomplished diarists. Adding a superb depth to the breadth of their mission are a number of ephemeral pieces including letter copies notes financials lists of visitors Christmas gifts recipes newspaper cuttings and Chinese Imperial decrees etc. etc. provide for an extraordinary detailed look into Christian outreach in China at the very moment of China's move into the Modern Era from just before the Wuchang Uprising and the ascendancy of Sun Yat-Sen. ‎GREECE. Good. 1941. Hardcover. On offer is a super original significant manuscript and photographic relic of the German invasion and occupation of Greece during World War II. Dated January 17th 1941 through the invasion date of April 10th to the last handwritten date being April 19th 1941 at picture #86 then there another 77 pictures in sequence though undated Uffz. Unteroffizier A. Konig apparently a German lieutenant using a Greek accounting book created a photo journal and report for German Command with photographs and handwritten notes detailing with names places some anecdotes and dates of the German march from Hungary to Greece. The diary begins with photograph #1 in Hungary the troop III/A.R.220 Third Division Artillery Regiment 220 to Romania on to Greece and eventually Salonika. Tucked into the book is a double sided tally sheet detailing which of the 163 numbered photographs has been enlarged to 6 x 9 inches those photos cropped and the number of copies made of each photo which in many cases numbered in the dozen to twenty or so.
