‎1866 - 1867 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY/JOURNAL/NOTEBOOK OF A SUCCESSFUL KINSMAN OHIO BUSINESSMAN‎

‎KINSMAN OHIO OH TRUMBULL COUNTY. Good. 1866. On offer is the handwritten manuscript diary and journal of B. H. Peabody of Kinsman Ohio. Mr. Peabody is a farmer and entrepreneur who in this ledger style book records his daily business dealings visits local events and the economics of the day. Beginning January 1st of 1866 he continues over 93 numbered pages until November 8th 1867. There is a break between November 1st and December 31st 1866. A very very hard working and obviously successful businessman Mr. Peabody is also very pious as is evidenced in his comments of the day - at one point he mentions preaching the funeral service for a particular woman. He is also a very dedicated diarist always providing full names of his contacts and clients. The inside back cover has a chart which appears to be a planting breakdown of varieties if apples. There are also nmany references to the local cheese market. Local historians and genealogists will find a wealth of information in this book which is quite legible but requires a glass in places as the period ink is on the lighter side. 7 1/4 x 11 3/4 inches the front cover has a split where the cover meets the spine. Two strings in the center of the book hold the cover to the spine. Back cover is good. Pages are also good. The edges of the covers are worn. Both proofs are in fine condition. ‎1974 EXPOSE SCREENPLAY MANUSCRIPT: WITNESS TO MURDER ALLEGES HISTORY OF INVESTIGATIVE ERROR DUPLICITY AND CORRUPTION IN PRE WAR NEW JERSEY INCLUDING THE LINDBERGH KIDNAPPING AND TRIAL‎

‎BERNARDSVILLE NEW JERSEY NJ. Good. 1974. On offer is an original manuscript by A. Ponds Orlando personally inscribed to Erwin Richardt noted anti government activist in pencil - 'To Erwin from Ponds'. In 1931 A. Ponds Orlando was an eyewitness to the Charles Cavanaugh murder on Sept 8 1931 and this work recounts those events in detail including how the state police chose an innocent scapegoat to pin the crime on used third-degree tactics to force a false 'confession' fabricated false evidence paid 'witnesses' to lie on the stand during the trial hide and destroy actual and true evidence found at the crime scene and disregarded the testimony of true witnesses. The scapegoat Edward Kettering was found guilty sentenced to 20 years in prison and died in jail. Both men were lifelong crusaders for justice and right as well as residents of the Bernardsville New Jersey area and this book having come from the Irwin Richardt Estate Sons of Liberty Farm. This manuscript is Ponds' fascinating expose of how the New Jersey State Police and Somerset County prosecutors fabricated evidence paid witnesses and suppressed the truth in several highly-publicized cases during the early 1930 notably the murder of Bernardsville Police Chief Charles Cavanaugh in 1931 and the framing and execution of Bruno Richard Hauptman for the kidnap and murder of the Lindbergh baby. Somerset County NJ cases also examined are the 1928 torch murder near Bernardsville and the 1922 murder of Reverend Edward Hall and his mistress Mrs. Eleanor Mills a choir singer near New Brunswick NJ. The manuscript was written in 1974 and was intended to be published and produced as a television movie originally titled 'Why I Shot Cholly - The Truth of the Cavanaugh Case The Lindbergh Case The Orlando Case The Misuse of Forensic Evidence and An Expose of Science vs. Justice'. Orlando later re-titled the manuscript to simply 'Framed Forensic'. Orlando fought for years to right this injustice even under threat of harm and the murderous poisoning of his own family in 1935 - his father grandfather and sister died his mother and another sister recovered and survived. The same officials involved in the Cavanaugh frame-up were also directly involved in the Lindbergh baby kidnapping and Orlando postulates with good cause that Bruno Richard Hauptman was also framed had never been to the Lindbergh home and was tried convicted and executed with false manufactured evidence. Bound in a blue loose-leaf binder the manuscript is over one hundred 8 1/2" by 11" pages of photo-static copies of typewritten pages - many with notes corrections and edits in pencil or pen by the author. Also included are photo-stat copies of newspaper clippings original and published 'letters to the editor' penned by Orlando regarding the frame-ups copies of maps and photos showing the crime scenes. Also a published letter to Governor Kean implicating his father Congressman Robert W. Kean in forcing Governor Harold Hoffman to embezzle state funds and then preventing him from giving pardon to Bruno Richard Hauptman on death row in spite of the fact that Governor Hoffman believed that Hauptman was innocent and that Robert Kean was in part responsible for Hauptman's execution and Governor Hoffman's suicide. Also included are copies of complaints filed by Orlando charging Detective Samuel Leon and Assistant Prosecutor T. Gerard Wharton with the felony murder of Edward Kettering and the poisoning murder of his father grandfather and sister. ‎GOSHEN SYRACUSE INDIANA ELKHART COUNTY CONCORD TWP. Good. 1868. On offer are three greatly filled diaries handwritten in 1868 1872 and 1879 by David B. Grubb from Indiana. The earliest diary 1868 reveals he lived in Goshen Indiana Elkhart County Concord Township. In the later two diaries 1872 & 1879 he had moved to Syracuse Indiana. Mr. Grubb is a cobbler for the most part but does labor for farmers and shopkeepers. He also loves his tobacco and beer and spends quite a bit of money on each on a weekly basis. Collectors of Indiana history will be pleased that Mr. Grubb writes daily and mentions names and places. He is a very dedicated diarist and seems to enjoy recording his daily events local history and contacts with others. Here are snippets: 1868 "January 1st Was at Spot's. They had a turkey roast and some of the neighbor's was invited in to roast. I and Eliaz took the team and sled and went to Plainfield and fetched the preacher Hiller. Went home with Maria's and helped to doctor a horse for Brock. Was up till about twelve o'clock. It was cloudy all day and kind of a snow wind." "February 1st Got ready to got to Plainfield and went down to the grove to look at a tree and come back up the river and went across the river to Haines to trade horses but Haine was not at home. Come back to Plainfield and come home &c. Bought 5cts worth apples. The weather was nice but cold and sleighing was poor across the river." "February 8th Went over to Yang's and got Jacks buggy and started for Joliet. Came to Joliet and put our mare in the stable and went over to W. Hein_____ and got dinner then went up town and got some saddler awls and needles for 10cts and 40cts for drink. The weather was snowy before we got to Joliet and turned into rain before we got back and got some wet before we got back." "February 22nd Got breakfast and went down town awhile. ‎PLAINFIELD NEW JERSEY NJ DAYTONA FLORIDA FL. Good. 1905. On offer is the very interesting travel journal and diary of Carolyn R. Moore from Plainfield New Jersey. She is a young woman of means her family owns a hotel where Carolyn works very hard but uncomplainingly and possesses the common prejudices of the day writes from 1905 - 1906. This is a densely written diary wherein Carolyn writes intense detailed accounts of family friends daily activities local gossip and various trips via ship road and train from Daytona Florida to St. Augustine a stop at Sandy Hook during a storm at sea a trip to Atlantic City NJ New York and others but this is also a portrait of the times for good and bad. Main portions appear to be written while in Daytona Florida with some time spent enjoying the beach. Carolyn has a keen and observant eye which provides for super passages about one of the early races and the large crowds in Daytona Florida viewing the auto "races" on the beach. Carolyn also has an eye for nuance - she writes of particular hat; "it's not pretty but it is fetching." She also writes vivid descriptions of an automobile accident with injuries and a chauffeur being killed social outings/dances shopping for the latest woman's fashion including abandoning her "corset" for a chemise reading cooking pies and making candy sewing music lessons various local accommodations dinners with family and friends and her snobbish opinions of the people she meets aboard ship. On the bad side we read several comments that reflect racial attitudes including casual references to "the black church" "dark skin" or seeing "some coon do stunts." Here are more snippets: "Mr Wooley called and ate a plate of my cake. Went over to the beach by the south bridge & I came home on my wheel with Eleanor Gordon and Miss Anderson. Saw several racers among them Vanderbilts winners of last year. An awful accident up toward Ormond - Richard Croker's son injured his chaffeur killed & man on motorcycle legs broken." "Mr. Sharb came over at 10 with the horses. Mine is a great black brute. Cath's a cute pony. He made us mount & we tore off. It was fierce." "The cottage is cute with 2 bedrooms 2 parlors & a basement kitchen and dining room combined. Finished my leaf and holly pillow. Aunt Mag's 7th wedding anniversary." "Great crowds on the beach. ‎Chicago Illinois IL. Fine. 1900. Full-Leather. On offer is an absolutely remarkable handwritten manuscript work of tremendous depth researched written and compiled by John C.C. Clarke A.M titled "ALPHABETS OF THE WORLD." This book is his original unpublished manuscript and details the alphabets of the world from ancient times; Egyptian hieroglyphics Egyptian hieratic Egyptian Demotic or Enchorial Egyptian Comparative Tables Coptic Egyptian Ancient Libyan modern Libyan Southern Arabic and so on. 479 pp but not all pages are full since Mr. Clarke left space between chapters and spare pages if he overwrote. The work is complete as per the author's handwritten notes. The author has signed the last page stating it is wholly executed and listing the sections of the book for which he claims originality. Scholars and historians of world languages will find this work priceless for its remarkable detail and depth. An added bonus is a wealth of ephemera being newspaper articles about the author and his work. As mentioned the author states "This book on this date is wholly executed….Sep 21 1900" as if in preparation for publishing though it never was. On the last page Mr. Clark provides a concise biography: he was born in Providence R.I. in 1833. He was a Phi Beta Kappa and got his A.B. and M.A. from the University of Rochester 1859 and 1866. He earned his doctorate in 1894 from Bellevue College of the University of Omaha. He was a professor at the University of Chicago from 1865 to 1867. He was a Professor of Greek Modern Languages and Hebrew at various colleges - see photo. He was a pastor in Yonkers NY also Chicago and Cincinnati. He wrote three books - The Origin and Varieties of the Semitic Alphabet Chicago 1884 20 pages of plates; Man and his Divine Father Chicago 1900 and Revelation Rediscovered Chicago 1905. There are many citations throughout this work which provide a valuable bibliography and footnotes. ‎CASTORLAND WATERTOWN CARTHAGE UPSTATE NEW YORK NY. Good. 1899. On offer is an original 1888 manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified upstate New York man. There are many mentions of Castorland Lowville Dublin Black River and Carthage placing the writer somewhere east of Watertown New York. Unusual for a rural diary is the very cultured hand of this man who works as auctioneer interpreter and lawyer or maybe even a Justice of the Peace mentioning at least two trials plus he does the thousand chores rural people of the day did from making cheese and soap to digging potatoes. Local historians or collectors of the area will perhaps find more given the authors descriptions of events and names mentioned which include: John Zehr J.W. Henry Yousey George Busm La Juett Family Nicholas Paquet Frank Henry Peter Ritts Old Mrs. Effly George Stoddard Anna his wife. He also mentions being an interpreter for Antoine and Mrs. Maugery; Rama and Katie came home from the woods; and he writes of going to his factory to turn out something in wood; sawing ice for ice house and also sleighing. He mentions many births deaths and marriages. Lester keeps a detailed record of every day until Oct. 2 when he declares that for efficiency a diary takes up too much time and he quits. He writes about his visits with his dear Hazel notes daily letters to her. Then Alice appears on the scene. Frat life. Lester zips around Massachusetts on "the cars" faster than today with an automobile. Lester takes Hazel to see Ethel Barrymore at the Hollis St. Theatre in Boston. In May there's lots of baseball and tennis hardly time for classes. Graduation festivities spread over several days ending June 21. On July 11 Lester goes to Fenway Park to see the Red Sox and Chicago in a double header. He's traveling all over Massachusetts and up into Vermont giving demonstrations at churches and taking orders. Aug. 7 he attends a Boston Braves game-- they beat Cinci 2-0 and 6-0. Aug. 15 he sees Red Sox beat Washington 1-0 in 13 innings. Aug. 16 he watches Red Sox beat the White Sox 5-4 in 16 innings. On offer is the super intimate manuscript diary and relic of Depression Era Americana being the handwritten diary of Beverly Hills-Los Angeles area lawyer Leo Edwin Bromberg. This diary is particularly interesting on a number of levels. The journal begins "January 1st 1933 4:00 a.m. Sunday morning. New Years Day here in Shanghai." Begun as a letter to his wife Judy Bromberg describes his trip retrospectively as it had begun 3 months before his main companion a Major T.M. Morass who he is quite taken with walks along Soochow Creek Chinese dance halls his work on a deal for the Shanghai Mutual Life Insurance Co. leaving Shanghai on the 27th of 1933 to Hong Kong Singapore and then abruptly ending February 9th 1933 to re-start January 3rd 1934 with his return to independent practice still embroiled in bad 1933 insurance business upon his return to California and the 'fiasco of the China trip' and the blow by blow of much of his painful present from managing his brother Irving's trial for buying hot goods his brother would go on to found the company that would become Sega to his own return to investing along with his dreaded return to lawyering as a profession. He tends to write until the substance of the year silences him and then he picks up again in the New Year lamenting the year before. It is not until 1935 that his fortunes turn around and he wins a few cases and makes some money. This diary of 46 folio sized pages fully written by depressed Depression era author has had some water damage to the edges of the text block for the most part legible though the odd page with some loss. The book details their journey to India and their social life and meetings with the upper strata of East Indian society and many many government leaders with the background of their educational missionary work. That said much of the content shows that they were attempting to bridge the cultural gap between societies as many of the invites reveal 'mixed race' parties and functions. The diary is packed - to the point of the covers bursting and off though present - with invitations letters to and from photos newspaper clippings and much much more dated through the 1920's. There are a few photos at the very back in later years. The Kribs were based in Allahabad and were very highly connected as evidenced by the invitations. Invites include: Rai Bahadur Jagmal. He has had world experience as a teacher traveler and social worker only recently returned to this country after seven years residence at Allahabad India where he taught Biology in the Christian College. 3 Ewing Christian College ECC was established in 1902 as Allahabad Christian College by the American Presbyterian Mission ECC is one of the oldest colleges established in India. However this claim is doubtful because the British East India Company was long gone at the time of the college's founding as the British had taken over the control of India after the first war of Independence in 1857. At the beginning the college was named Vernacular school. Later its governance was shifted to the Presbyterian Church. In 1910 it was called Allahabad Christian College. The campus is located on the northern bank of Jamuna River near Sangam on the southern part of Allahabad City. Spread on a sprawling green campus of 42 acres 170000 m2 the college opened its Agriculture Economics Extension Department on the other side of the river which soon developed into Allahabad Agriculture Institute now a deemed university. The college took giant strides in the field of higher education with Dr. Dudgeon opening a first laboratory course in botany laying a very strong base for research in the college. In 1903 many undergraduate offerings were initiated. However in 1922 on the account of a new university act the school lost its college status. In 1935 it started offering classes in a coeducational setup. In 1950 after the permission of Allahabad University classes for degree students began and once again it acquired college status.
