‎1834 PRINTED PAMPHLET ISSUED BY THE HARVARD FACULTY WITH HANDWRITTEN NOTES BY THE PRESIDENT OF HARVARD REGARDING THE 'INQUISITION OF THE FACULTY'‎

‎BOSTON CAMBRIDGE MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Very Good. 1834. Manuscript. On offer is a wonderful manuscript relic of Ivy League Americana being a 12 page printed pamphlet dated June 11th 1834 put forth from the Harvard Faculty and Josiah Quincy whose handwritten notes are evident. Josiah Quincy III 1772-1864 was a U.S. educator and political figure. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives 1805 - 1813 Mayor of Boston 1823 - 1828 and President of Harvard University 1829 - 1845. The historic Quincy Market in downtown Boston is named in his honor. Josiah Quincy became the first layman since John Leverett to assume the presidency of Harvard University. Known to be an administrator rather than an educator Quincy met the Harvard Corporation's desire for someone with practical administrative experience. One of Quincy's major challenges as president was the taming of perennial student rebellions. Immediately after his election as president Quincy informed the student body that the campus would no longer be a haven for lawbreakers. He challenged the students to improve their behavior and in doing so became most unpopular. Students continued to riot and burned Quincy in effigy in the College Yard. In 1834 after an open rebellion among college freshmen spread to other classes Quincy suspended the entire sophomore class. Later on with only the support of Corporation Fellows Nathaniel Bowditch and ex-President John Quincy Adams Quincy faced down a threatened boycott of commencement exercises by the senior class. When the appointed day arrived most seniors took their degrees. Further trouble erupted in 1841 when Quincy declared that public authorities would be brought onto the campus to deal with troublemakers. Rebellion broke loose on campus and an explosion occurred in the college chapel. When the smoke cleared a note was visible on the wall "A bone for old Quin to pick." Despite his best efforts Quincy was never able to deal effectively with the student unrest. This pamphlet is directly associated to his efforts and researchers and historians will relish his holograph notes: page one has ink handwritten notes stating: "The following would not sign an approval of this circular - he lists 7 faculty names i.e. Felton Gleason Clapp Parker Mason etc - On Monday June 30 1834 - the whole Senior Class were called before an inquisition of the Faculty of the University to answer certain questions respecting this document. None it is believed of any worth or proved ___ under the examination." There is more on page 8 where he writes the names of four "Committee" members. ‎1940s Royal Artillery British Major's Pocket Notebook Kept While Serving on the Allied Commission for Austria after the Fall of Hitler's Germany‎

‎Austria Germany: Royal Artillery Britain Austria. Very Good. N.D. Full-Leather. On offer is a very interesting pocket notebook carried by a British Army officer during WWII. The author of this notebook is Major H. A. Hansen. Hansen served in the Royal Artillery during WWII. Following the war Hansen was part of the British contingent serving on the Allied Commission for Austria which assumed control over Austria following the defeat of Germany in 1945. Specifically Hansen served in the Economic Division. Although our informal research has not been able to discover any additional biographical information there is an apparent home address from Liverpool UK. This is a fascinating notebook. It is his jottings of information that he felt was important to note as he carried out his duties in Austria after the fall of Hitler's Germany. One long section deals with an overview of the country itself and major economic sectors. For example: "Clothing : 1938 a self-supporting i. E. 'making up" industries especially in knit wear which was of high grade quality and there was quite considerable of this style of goods. Mostly restricted in Vienna to pre-1938 men under Jewish control. Latest evidence factories still in existence under Nazi control. Present products not known. Chemicals : … Chemical industry controlled almost exclusively by I. G. Farbenindustrial Development … an issue of great complexity. Pharmaceutical branch will be of great importance. Domestic supplies of will be inadequate. Majority of chemical works vicinity of Vienna Moosbierbaum in Oberdonau and in Steimach." Another section contains a list of fuels and natural resources available. He includes a list of German abbreviations their full meaning and a translation. He talks about the objectives of their mission: "Objectives : Basic objective to ensure controlled development of Austrian mineral resources. : a to the extent necessary to maintain an industrial activity at level approved by Allied High Command b to the further extent necessary to supply fuel and raw materials for essential Austrian needs and to the additional extent necessary to provide such supplies ass shall be approved for international transfer or international requisitions". For a historian of WWII and the immediate reconstruction period following the war this is an outstanding primary source document. It is one thing to read the dry reports and records of such administrations but it is another thing entirely to see the private notes of someone who was intimately involved. This notebook is a small ring binder measuring 6.25 inches by 4.0 inches. It contains 108 pages held by a 6-ring binder clip. The notebook is 75% complete. It is in very good condition. While the leather cover shows some signs of wear its in completely intact. ‎London England. Very Good. 1852. On offer is a prize 1852 diary and journal of George Beaufoy a prominent merchant in London England. This book which is in excellent condition is an outstanding description of his 2nd year running this already century-old family firm. The book is 10 in by 9 1/2 in. The paperboard cover and all pages are in excellent condition. There are 224 pages and the book is 100% complete. The handwriting is clearly written if somewhat difficult to read. George Beaufoy was born in 1796 and served in the Royal Navy from 1810 until 1851 retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. In 1852 he took over the family firm - Beaufoy Vinegar Factory. The firm was founded sometime before 1743 by his grandfather. George Beaufoy ran the firm from 1851 until his death in 1864. The firm which produced vinegar wine mineral water and cordials continued until 1932 when it merged with Sarson's Vinegars and several other firms to form British Vinegars Limited BVL. Through a number of mergers BVL today is part of the Japanese firm Mizkan Group the largest supplier of Japanese seasonings worldwide. The entries are a mix of personal and business notations. A number detail various social activities while others offer detailed information on business affairs & matters. "Took Anne to see Houses of Parliament and afterwards drove round Regents Park and home by Grosvenor Place" Mar 27 1852. "In afternoon went with Anne to the Zoological Gardens Regent Park and remained and hour & a half to hear the music. Was not aware until we are at the gardens that Saturday is Gala Day" May 27 1852 "Left South Lambeth about 1/2 past 11 arrived at Sheepshead about 4 or 1/4 before found all pretty well ." Jul11 1852 "Went to Sheepshead by Express. Walked on from Abington Arrived 12:40. Found Mary Jones and Miss Jonesat Sheepshead Latter to take leave she will sail of the 1st of September from Spithead ." Aug 20 1852. "Wm Christmas and sic old and good customer came over and said he should continue his custom for he could not get a better article and I said he should write to Mr. Wakely if he could tell him where to buy a better article than Beaufoy and I thank him" Sept 8 1852. Some notable entries include a correspondence with Field Marshall Arthur Wellesley 1st Duke of Wellington the leading military figure in Britain: "My Lord Duke I beg to return to you my sincere thanks for . Feb 6 1852. An entry on Jan 7th details will arrangements he made for his new wife Anne. The July 11 entry details his income tax declaration. It shows an annual income of £6000 equivalent today to £800000 or US$1 million. His entry also notes that he believes he paid too much! The Memoranda Section is filled with business references calculations and records. Records include purchases of various ingredients amounts paid to some staff monthly production runs of 'sweets' term used to describe wine and even Christmas presents. This diary presents an utterly fascinating detailed look at the daily life of a very successful businessman in mid-19th century London. It also gives a glimpse into some of the finances of a successful business operating across the country. On offer is a super group of 18 original World War II manuscript letters 51 pages in all written by a man "Joe" to his pregnant wife Honey while he is stationed at the US Naval Training Station later the Sampson Air Force Base in Sampson New York and then later in Samar Philippines. The first letter dates January 26th 1944 and the last letter from Joe is from October 2nd 1945 which finds him on a ship heading to Samar in the Philippines. Joe is a very good writer filling his letters news and events concerning his training but at heart these are love letters and full of intimate sentiment. Here are some snippets: "January 26th 1944 Dear Honey How are you feeling I hope you are all right and not crying too much. How is the baby behaving I hope everyone is ok. I am still in my civilian clothes because I am what is known as a holdover. They are holding me because they say I can't hear too good. I am in a barrack with a bunch of other fellows who have something wrong with them. There are about 200 of us. I don't know how long I'll be here because they have to examine my ears at the hospital. If they pass me I will start boot training but I will not be with the fellows I came here with because they already have started. If they don't pass me they will send me home….I miss you very much and love you so much that I always have you on my mind. Love Joe." "January 30th 1944 Dear Honey it is a beautiful day today. The sun is shining but it is a little cold. All the boys are in the barracks amusing themselves by playing cards sleeping playing the piano reading and writing letters. I'm not in boot training yet but I expect to go either Monday or Tuesday. I feel lonely today because we are not together like we use to be on Sunday. I went to church this morning at 6:30 Mass. The church looks nice and is simple not fancy. I started to think about you in church and I felt like crying. I had a big lump in my throat. One of the fellows did cry in church. He is married also. We felt good going to church just the same. Tonight is show night. They have shows on Tuesdays Thursdays and Sunday night. They are going to show Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland in "Girl Crazy." ‎XiangLing Brigade SunZhuangZi Commune HuaiLai Co. Very Good. 1966. On offer is a significant historic original manuscript relic of the Cultural Revolution era in People's Republic of China. The 250 page village Cadre log book is dated through 1966 - 1972 peak time of Mao Zedong's push to change the face and fabric of China. As one online source succinctly sums up the times: "People's Republic of China from 1966 through 1976. Set into motion by Mao Zedong then Chairman of the Communist Party of China its stated goal was to enforce socialism in the country by removing capitalist traditional and cultural elements from Chinese society and impose Maoist orthodoxy within the Party. The most important yet naturally unstated reason for the revolution was the return of Mao Zedong to a position of political power after he lost most of his political influence after his failed Great leap forward." This log book was faithfully filled much like a diary or journal recording this village's work efforts and output notes on meetings political movement affairs critical notes in multiple hands in different sections from 1966 - 1972. Besides the manuscript writings there are some charts lists columns of figures plus a number of ephemeral inserts that appear to be receipts and the like. This manuscript uniquely details for historians researchers and collectors the requirements the observances and functions demanded of the village. The book proper is filled with coarse paper sandwiched between two covers with cord holding all together. Approximately 13cm x 19.5cm no missing pages. ‎1966 - 1967 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DUTY JOURNAL AND PERSONAL DIARY OF A MUCH DECORATED SPECIAL FORCES CHAPLAIN SERVING IN VIETNAM‎

‎VIETNAM. Very Good. 1966. On offer is a very interesting original manuscript relic dated September 6 1966 through October 1 1967 of the Vietnam War and American involvement handwritten and typed by US Special Forces Chaplain David G. Boyce b.1928 - d. March 4th 2013. One part "Duty Log" and moreso a diary of all his movements and his personal thoughts regarding his service this is a very intimate personal history. There are even some movie plots he has imagined and poetry and songs - Boyce was quite a Renaissance man it appears! Using yellow legal pad paper originally handwritten the author changes over to a typed manuscript of 350 pages doing a superb job of recording names ranks operational duties and much much more. He does at times use blank spaces to be discreet and sometimes he admits he has forgotten the name. Here is a sample passage - spelling and typing mistakes intact: I remember the invitation of the Mike Force CO who is up here with a company guarding the camp while it is under construction. He and Sgt. Matthews the first sergeant had said to come on over and visit. I decided that if I dedn't get out that I would do just exactly that. I would go visit the Mike Force since I had now payed my visit to the Strike Force. I sat outside the team tent TOC for a while. Then I went inside and talked with Capt Horn CO. I told him my plan and gave him sixteen 16 of the Lubbock Texas "To a Soldier in Vietnam" letters- He said that he did not want to be abrupt but he had to leave for a meeting. We parted on this note. He went to his meeting and I went to gather my gear to go to Mike. Went outside and found that Sgt. Pederson was leaving. He said that he would give me a ride. He is E-7 acting team Sargeant. He took me down about 1700 to the Mike force location near the river- I dismounted and walked out into the woods. I saw the China Boy troops. They were obvisiuly Chineese. They kept pointing me farther back into the woods. Away from the road. Finally I came across two 2 Americans- It was Sgt. Leon and Sgt. Hoskins and Sgt. Leon came over and picked up my pack and took it for me over to the next object a half building 35 meters farther back. It looked like a half built house with posts and part of a back wall and about half of a grass roof with bamboo beams. This was the CP. Here I found the C.O. Capt. ----- Sgt. Matthews and Sgt. Lopey. I was given a very warm reception. It was the warmest that shave received since being in Vietnam. Even better than the one I received at Don Phuc mike force which was the best one that I had received up to that time. The warmth of their reception more than made up for the cold night that I was to spend there. I sat down and was introduced all around and told them that I remember Lopey from Bragg. He has a wife that is from Munich Germany and he now has orders to the 10th Group. Sgt. Leon is a dew and wanted to know why some of the ranking Chaplains are not ______. Sgt. Hoskins is called snake because he is very fearful of snakes. He is intrepid in battle is not afraid of death but he does not like snakes. The CO has orders to Fort Benning. He says that he is going "home". He knows Col. Stanly. He went through VW school with him and on one of their field problems he was point man one night and fell unto a 30 foot well. Sgt. Natthews is an old soldier with another couple to go which he will do in ROTC at _________ and hopes to continue there in ROTC after he retives. As a civilian the state pays half and federal pays half. Sgt. Hoskins has 23 years in Air _______ Since 1943. He was in the 519th Abn Bn that Gen. Yarbrough was in- Black Potch with the Red out line of a C-42 door and a resene parachute in the foor- He says that he will shortly retive and go to work in D.C. investigating welfare cases- His goal is to stamp out welfare- I sat down and they asked if I had eaten. I said no and told then that I wanted some of that pork and rice they had promised me. The served me with a big bowl of rice and pork with cooked cucumbers tasted like cooked turnips and a glass and a half of chocolate milk. It was a good meal because the fellowship was so good. I used several helpings of soy sauce to make it down and finished the entire bowl. Then we sat around batting the breeze which I usually don't enjoy but I did enjoy with them. Some one asked for the time and then some one said 1745. Shortly afterwards I need a watch to be more accurate there was a couple of explosions like a grenade heard off toward the river. Some one said that they are playing with grenades down there. Then there were more explosions and the sound an automatic weapon and some one called out four the Nungs Vee Cee! With that everyone started to scurry around. I was frightened so I took my cigar and put it is my mouth so that I would appear more calm than I was. I had a cigar because I had previously passed out cigars to Sgt. Matthews Sgt. Lopeg and Sgt. Leon- the CO and Sgt. Hoskins don't smoke- I put the cigar in my mouth and went over to my ruck sake and put on my tiger suit shirt I don't know whyand put on my webb gear. Next I dug out my 45 pistol and then had to hunt for the chips. I put a chip in but did not put a round in the chamber. Next I stood around trying to look calm with my cigar in my mouth. I went to the Nortor pit and watched then five the 60 MM nortors. They fived 5 had a misfire cleaved the barrel. I was very apprehensive as they cleaved the chamber and I tried to edge away without being too conspicuous. He finally cleaved it and began to fire some more. When he completed the fire mission the sound of firing died away and I thought that it was all over. I wandered back toward the CP trying to be as nonchalant as possible just as I reached the edge of the CP roof everything opened up all at once. I was frightened and the man standing next to me who was acting as my body guard told me to get in the hole that had been dug at the edge of the CP. I gladly got in. I thought that we were being over run because of the valume of fire power that was being put out. I pulled out my 45 and tryed to put a round in the chamber. It would not go. I pulled out the clip and all the bulled fell out. My Chineese body guard very calmly said "#10" and proceeded to take my clip and put the rounds in it while I helf his carbine. I than realized that I showed carry my carbine with me when I go out on field trips. It would be best to have a folding stock. He fixed the clip and I stock it in my weapon and put a round in the chamber and held the 45 on ready. I was expecting to see the VC any minute. My body guard then commented. "No VO". I couldn't see how this was possible but he said it several times with calmness and I began to be less frightened. I then got up out of my crotching position and sat on the edge of the foxhole. Again he saig "No V.C." and by now I began to believe him. With his words of assurane ringing in my lars I found the comrage to get up out of the fox hale and wander around. The firing was still going on but not with the first initial intersily. Behind the CP I found Sgt. Matthews firing the rocket launcher. He fired at least 4 or 5 rounds with the new self contained unit. The firing of the rocket launcher just about finished up the firing. A FAC came over. Sgt. Matthews wanted Francois to go down the road and locate China Boy 3 the CO & Sgt. Leon & Sgt. Hoskins & Sgt. Lepey. They would not come up on the radio. Francois did not seem inclined to go look. Soon they came in the CO and the ones who had gone out to investigate. The CO gave me a suvineer the tailfin off of a rifle grenade home made type that the local VC us. There had been 4 VC local type they had been firing at a jeep or trying to get in close enough to the New Camp for night _______ or trying for revenge on the Mike Force. As an informal critize it was pointed out that there were 4 VC. We did not get a one of them and in the process $5000.00 worth of ammo was expended. The heavy valume of fire at the end which had frightened me was the firing of their weapons out of frustration and out of just wanting to fire the weapons. Sgt. Matthews said that the time to be scarred is when you hear the "crack" of the bullets. Then you know that is incoming. Then is the time to be frightened- I realized that I had just about chewed the cigar into and also I realized that I was sweating out of fright. I threw away the cigar slobb and wiped my sweaty brow. Adding additional breadth to this personal account are more than a dozen photos many original of the writer who was the senior officer and the head of the Chaplain's Unit his colleagues and other Officers. Boyce we learn from a news clipping was a member of the Mecklenburg Presbytery Church of Charlotte North Carolina and distinguished as the first Presbyterian to be selected as a Special Forces Chaplain. He was also a jump master and fully qualified for the elite 3rd Special Forces Airborne Group. Further research regarding his military record list his military specialties which include an unusual and very intriguing record as Special Forces Officer Training Officer Chaplain and Parachutist. ‎ENGLAND Montreal UK CANADA. Very Good. 1960. On offer is an archive of forty-nine 49 handwritten letters and airgrammes one typed written by Ralph C.E. Lord known as 'Lordy' a man who is for the most part a captain in the Royal Canadian Engineers. The letters cover the period of late 1943 through to the end of 1945 and one dated 1946. On the one hand the letters show a joviality especially for his two children Patricia and William but in other communications there is the terrible sadness of a marriage in hell and on the cusp of divorce which in one of the letters near the end deals with precisely that. Ralph seems to be barely keeping things together - he is stoically allowing his wife to claim the divorce is his fault for the sake of appearances with the children even though the opposite appears to be true. Ralph in other letters complained how his wife's inappropriate actions leading to a penalty fine and Ralph's temporary loss of his captaincy. He has covered up for her for the sake of the children. In another heartbreaking letter Ralph who now that the war has ended is trying to start a business in the UK apologizes profusely to the children for his inability to send presents for Christmas. This archive is a rare peak into a man's heartbreaking situation which most likely was more common an occurence in the war years than one imagines. Also rare to see a man to be so emotive yet still maintain his self esteem. Research suggests her husband's last name is Miller as she identifies 'Mother Miller' as one of the well wishers when they board the ship. Her birthday is celebrated the very next day aboard ship. She begins to study Portuguese in earnest. In Rio they stay at the 'Gloria'; she reports that everything is very queer and she is scared to death; the language is impossible; lovely descriptions of Rio de Janeiro; going to Coco Casino; the mountains. After a break of 3 weeks she begins detailed entries of her new domestic and social life in Brazil. Historians and collectors of the history of Brazil will recognize 1935 as a very interesting year given the attempted November revolution known as the 'Graf Zeppelin Revolution'. Our writer makes notes and some little commentary regarding the beginnings and ending of the rebellion. Our author does a super job recording the names of her visitors hosts and companions and the many names include; the Vidals Miss Coehlo the Davies the Shofners the Pratts Mrs. Towill the Redferns of Detroit Mrs. Redford Mrs. Oldbergh Mrs. Burr the Banfills and many many more. On offer is a super manuscript relic of Canada's Korean War participation being a handwritten day book diary pages of a soldier with the famed French Canadian regiment the 'Van Doos'. The 2-ring 6 x 4 inch pages record terse fact filled sometimes intimate personal notations of this soldier's duties and life in the Korean Theatre. Some pages are missing but from April 2nd 1952 through November 3rd 1952 he notes 216 days in Korea at this point this serviceman provides an intimate picture of a support soldier laying cables building rafts laying out minefields and many times under attack. June July August and September are the most filled months and in roughly 137 pages one reads the day to day mundane and of course the definitely not mundane entries - how he was driving a jeep with a Sergeant and a military officer and the jeep was under mortar fire and it rolled over down an embankment. Other entries include: May 17th 1952 29 years old; check Vandoos reg. 2000 mine A/P minefield. Got shelled in the valley. 18 - 75 mm came in on us in ½ hour. No casualties; received letters from patootie. Wrote letter to patootie; started booby trap MF mine field; Sgt. Jackson went to battle school in Japan; attended class…pontoon raft demonstration at Widgeon bridge; June 25th 7th Wedding Anniversary; mention of Operations Buster and Buckingham Noahs Ark; went over to Sgt's mess a HQ. Tied one on; constructed & operated close 50/60 raft all day; buffet lunch @ Vandoos HQs; took 5 L/Cpls up to Black Watch; almost got clobbered by a heavy mortar which landed 25' behind jeep and much more. One online source provides: BACKGROUND NOTES: The Royal 22e Régiment is an infantry regiment and the most famous francophone organization of the Canadian Forces. The regiment comprises three Regular Force battalions two Primary Reserve battalions and a band making it the largest regiment in the Canadian Army. The ceremonial home of the regiment is La Citadelle in Quebec City where the regimental museum is housed. The regiment is nicknamed the Van Doos an anglicized mispronunciation of vingt-deux "twenty-two" in French. The regiment's regimental headquarters is located in Quebec City with all three of its regular battalions stationed at various bases in the province of Quebec. The regiment serves as the "local" infantry regiment for Quebec. During the Korean War 1951-1953 the regiment expanded to three battalions each serving in turn as part of the Canadian brigade in the 1st Commonwealth Division. ‎1879 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT RELIC OF ONE YOUNG MIDSHIPMAN'S FORTUNATE FIRST CRUISE ON A SCIENTIFIC MISSION TO THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS AS HE CLIMBS THE RATLINES TO THE ADMIRALTY‎

‎ASEA ABOARD THE HMS TRIUMPH HMS TURQUOISE. Very Good. 1879. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of naval life and adventure for a young British midshipman and future Admiral named Albert Sumner Lafone during his service and first voyage on H.M.S. Triumph Flag Ship of the Pacific Squadron in the years 1879 - 1880. Titled 'Extracts from letters written by to his mother while on his first voyage' the elegant 9 x 7 inch black limp leather covers gilt panelling and marbled endpapers. The 104 pages are fair copies in a secretarial hand or perhaps a scrivener of the intimate descriptive letters to his mother of the future Admiral Lafone while under the command of the Arctic explorer Captain Albert Markham likely written soon afterwards by a friend or family member from the originals which are unaccounted for. Albert proves to be a gifted writer making for keen eyed observation and intelligence. He provides significant accounts of the 'stirring events' of the Battle of Iquique between the navies of Bolivia Peru and Chile sent from HMS Turquoise illustrated with a 'rough' chart ending in the ruse by which the Independencia's Captain 'endeavoured to ram the Covadonga. The threatened blow was skilfully avoided by a sudden rush ahead and the great ironclad ran right up on to the reef the surf breaking over her. the Captain set her on fire and the crew escaped in boats'. There follows a vivid account of the sinking of the Esmerelda 'each crew firing their guns as the water touched it. They went down shouting "Viva el Chile"'. There are visits to Acapulco and an Admiralty commissioned scientific survey and research voyage to the Galapagos Islands which was written up in the Royal Geographic Society Monthly Record in 1880 with its 'lava rocks' and San Francisco the Lafone finds himself moored at Esquimault in British Columbia where the ship is refitted and he devotes himself to observation of local culture: 'About 2 miles from the ship there is an indian village; the people are half civilised'. This doesn't prevent games of football with locals vividly described rowing races visits by trainee Japanese officers and a fund raising drive for a ball and provision of a social club despite criticism of 'the society about here' as 'regular republicans'. ‎BANGKOK SINGAPORE CHINA SINGAPORE FRANCE. Very Good. 1925. On offer is a super significant archive of circa 1925 - 1926 manuscript letters notes postcards and personal papers of famed and notorious French author essayist womanizer and anti-Semite Paul Morand We note that unfortunately during World War II Morand sided with the Vichy Government was noted as a Nazi collaborator and enthusiastic anti-Semite which include Morand's writings mostly originals a few copies suggesting he was working on an article or book the group which is housed in a cardboard sleeve with pencil title on the spine stating: Paul Morand 'PLUIE VAPEUR VITESSE' perhaps stealing the name of British artist William Turner's same titled work! or in English 'RAIN STEAM SPEED'. There is even a graphic hand drawn 'Globe' on the front cover with the title adding further credence that this was a prepublication manuscript though we cannot find any such title in his bibliography thusly rare plus travel papers including two of his passports. He used a variety of letterheads and postcards from hotels in Bangkok Singapore Kyoto Peking and the SS Majestic. Historians and researchers of the author will note with fascination that this group of papers falls directly in a travel period as stated in Wikipedia where "In 1925 Morand was posted in the French legation in Bangkok Thailand. He used this posting as a jumping off point for extensive travel. He documented his perceptions filtered through a mindset of the privileged European who lived to the fullest a life of entitlement. He disparaged the cultures of countries through which his travels took him. He had strong theories on race decrying that the world was becoming a "foul age of the half-caste". He derided democracy bemoaning that Europe had become impotent in his eyes "egotistical democratic divided." There are three autographs among the writings. ‎LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY. Very Good. 1932. On offer is a charming scrapbook and diary dated 1932 - 1933 by Ernest Brown Walker Jr. who lived in the Mayflower Apartments in Louisville Kentucky. The Mayflower was located somewhere in the Willow Ave Cherokee Park area. He graduated from Male High School in May of 1934 and kept this book during his junior year. He was in the Male HS ROTC and there are a number of interesting photos of him in his uniform. He was quite a social butterfly because there are a number of dance invitations from various girls. This book has 86 pages with something either written on them or glued to them. There are approximately 133 ephemeral items including post cards dance cards invitations newspaper articles pages filled with hand written diary notes etc. and about 43 photographs. Ernest Brown Walker was the Grandson of Creel Brown and Great Grandson of J.T.S. Brown both rich and powerful Kentucky Whiskey Distillers. We list separately his later college scrapbook. ‎FLY CREEK NEW YORK NY. Very Good. 1887. On offer is a handwritten treasure of Americana by this unidentified author who though semi-illiterate has a charming and colorful way of writing and keen skill of observation. She's outspoken hard working and tender hearted especially when it comes to the many deaths the village experiences in 1887; the year this diary represents. Research finds that she lives in or around Fly Creek New York. She mentions other places near there such as; Snowdon Albany Adams Watertown Litchfield Whipple Hill Mohawk and Lawerance. A casual read suggest she's working at a boarding house or on a farm with a number of hands because of the amount of people they feed on and because she's always referring to the men in the house as "all the men." She alludes to her child but says the baby is better off with its grandmother. Her writing is so entertaining and a refreshingly unique observer of all around makes this a one of a kind manuscript of the times. Here are snippets quoted exactly how she writes: January 1st "Some snow and blow. We had sparrib for dinner. I opened the bible for luck openned to St. John 1st Chap and to Psalms 39 and 40. The day was not very happy. I was lonesom and homesick." January 15th "Snow and wind. Mrs. Taylor is febel but she is viseting with Phebe the best she can. Mrs. Wilson has gone to help fire for Hannah utill they come home from funeral. Mr. Potts is beured to day." January 22nd "Hard south wind. I done the cleaning got the dinner. Lew cand for me. I went home saw the baby. He is nice. I wish I could live with him but no his Granma is best. I am glad she is." January 29th "Pleasant I made a lift cake done the cleaning and cleaned the wood shed. O by the way we have a lamp to light evry night and it dose not distress the old lady one bit." February 9th "Clear but windy. I put the rest of the close up had more to wash. Had to hang some of them out doors. It was fun to see them whip and hear Mam Wilson fret the Dr. to day. If one could sell the Dr. and Will for what they think they are worth and have the money it would be most of the world." February 28th "Snow and blow. Mrs. Taylor is no better fails all the time. ‎DENVER COLORADO CO. Very Good. 1939. On offer is a sensational scrapbook and homage to magic and magicians in pre-World War II America. Jack Fleming of Denver Colorado beginning as early as 1939 through 1947 collects ephemera broadsides business cards photographs and clippings and much much more nearly filling a lovely large folio sized scrapbook. Jack was a teenage magician using his real name and several stage names including PEAWADI THE MAGICIAN. Items include letters from local organizations boys and girls clubs school events etc. thanking him for performing local news articles about his performances and much more regarding his own entertaining. The first page of the scrapbook has a pamphlet program of "The Colorado Society of Magicians" promoting its "First Annual Houdini Memorial Program". The program is dated 1943. It is a single fold 4 panel program. The inside has a page filled with portraits of 10 Colorado Society Magicians and 5 "Florence Kesslers Dancers". Much of the scrapbook is an homage to Houdini whom he obviously idolized but also other huge names like Scarne who trained GIs how to avoid card sharks and dice cheats. The scrapbook also contains a very rare broadsheet of The Welles Mercury Wonder Show "ORSON WELLES THE MAGNIFICENT - The Mercury Wonder Show for Service Men" which was carefully tipped in at its upper corners but otherwise the broadsheet is loose. The broadsheet is in very good condition and has a shallow vertical crease across its entire length probably folded at one point and it has several horizontal creases from where it is folded to lay flat and safely in the scrapbook. There are no chips or tears to the broadsheet. A copy of this broadsheet was sold at a 2002 Swann Galleries Auction Sale Number 1949 - Lot 241 as part of the MAGIC - THE MANNY WELTMAN HOUDINI COLLECTION. Swann states: Scarce playbill for Welles and his bag of tricks listing the various acts and setting them off with amusing vignettes 21 1/2 x 6 inches sight size; matted and framed. Np 1943 Estimate $2000-3000 - sold for $1600. Collectors of 20th Century magic will be thrilled with the depth and breadth of this young man's abilities and interests in the world of magic. The scrapbook is 11.5" x 15.5" has illustrated vinyl covers spiral bound. 42 of its 48 pages 24 leaves have items on them. Some are loose.
