‎1931 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND PHOTO JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE TO SPITSBERGEN NORWAY AND THE LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN LYRICALLY TOLD BY A PRIEST PROFESSOR AND INTREPID TRAVELLER‎

‎ICELAND NORWAY SPITSBERGEN ARCTIC CIRCLE. Good. 1931. On offer is a super original 1931 diary photo journal and manuscript relic of a trip to the Arctic Circle via Iceland and Spitzbergen handwritten in French by l'abbe and Professor P. Roure. Father P. Roure was a priest in Igney in Lorrainne and a professor at the private Catholic college 'Institut Saint Joseph' in Épinal France. Wonderfully executed in French the Professor details his trip over 156 hand numbered pages with 30 black and white photos mounted with corners. Beginning July 14th through to August 25th the author and his party leave Hamburg to Paris to Cherbourg dallying around the coast of Great Britain they then travel by way of the Hamburg-American Line's 'Resolute' commanded by the celebrated and renowned Captain Fritz Kruse going north passing the Faroe Islands to Iceland for five days and over two dozen pages including a super description of Reykjavík then a small city of 24000 the intrepid party leaves Iceland. Keenly observant we learn of a sighting of a whale pod the Vatna Glacier the Vestmannaeyjar the volcanic region of Thingvellir the Almannagjá gorge spectacular and famous geysers including the 30 foot Gryla at Gufudalur Steam Valley and the geothermal Efri-Reykir field. A seasoned observer Roure does a superb job annotating and referencing the photos to the narrative and he leaves few details out of his voyage: the intricacies of reading a compass by compensating for polar magnetic declination; the distant mountain peaks and jagged ice of enormous proportion evocative of voyages of discovery: Adams Glacier Wagon Way and Gully Gullybreen Glaciers in Magdalenefjorden are compared and photographed. Announcing their arrival 'Cercle Polaire 66º 33' the Polar Circle 66º 33'' he notes a sudden drop in temperature increase in fog cover and the very late daylight through the cabin window. The expedition held a soiree that evening. At a calmer time in glacial waters an inspection of the luxury steamship becomes opportune with a super passage on the equipment. On July 30th they arrive at Magdalena Bay Spitsbergen. The day ends with the spectacle of the Midnight Sun: "31 Juillet. 5h. Nous sommes à la frontière du monde polaire; la mer libre est coupée nettement par une immense barrière de glace." 31 July. 5 o'clock. We are at the frontier of the polar world; the sea cut clean with an immense ice barrier. They travel to a northernmost point of 529 miles from the North Pole along a near endless ice wall The Professor is overcome by Kings Bay Kongsfjorden Cross Bay Haakon promontory Moller Bay the Mont du Prince Olav and scattered imposing icebergs. Returning to Kongsfjorden they visit the coal-mining village Ny-Ålesund located on its southern shore one of only four permanent settlements on Spitsbergen to this day. Roure finds himself reminiscing about Roald Amundsen who flew on the airship Norge from Ny-Ålesund to Alaska in 1926 with Umberto Nobile and also having departed from there on his fatal flight only 3 years prior to the writer's arrival. They pass Bear Island in the Barents Sea which was at the time owned by a federal Norwegian mining company and festivities begin onboard. In total more than two dozen pages are devoted to their time in Spitsbergen. ‎SEAL ISLAND NOVA SCOTIA. Good. 1901. On offer is a super group of eight 8 original Seal Island Nova Scotia log books with handwritten notes and data of the lighthouse and fog alarm operation by John Crowell and E.A. Hamilton Lighthouse keepers Engineers and the Fog Alarm Station attendants through the 1920s. These folio sized logs are unusual manuscript relics of a notorious and capricious geographic hot spot for shipwrecks in the Maritimes of Canada. Seal Island has been the place of destruction for 215 ships that came ashore on it's ledges around the island since 1787. Some covers a bit rough around the edges but overall in good condition. The books each have a purpose: Fog Alarm Station 2 books Return of Stores Diary of Lightkeeper Diary of Engineer 2 and Lighthouse Service 2 with dates ranging from 1901 to 1935 making for a treasure trove of historical data and personal observations of this fascinating Island. ‎SCHLOSS ZEIL WALDBURG-ZEIL LEUTKIRCH IM ALLGÄU GDR. Good. 1722. On offer is a super original 18th Century manuscript relic related to the physical art of war. Thirty hand drawn pages many with copious meticulous notes detailing what in 1772 would have been the state of the critical art of moving and parading masses of armed men into and during battle. Napoleon would likely have been trained to the standards or the like in this very handsome German volume. There is a rubber stamped inscription 'Archivrat Dr. R. Rauh Schloss Zeil Wrtrag' identifying the book as having been part of the Library of the famed residence of the Princes of Waldburg-Zeil in Leutkirch im Allgäu in southern Germany. The 7 x 5 inch book still has some of the gilt filigree over the leather and marbleized free endpapers attest to the value of this manuscript and was likely a ranking officers though we can only speculate. On offer is a superb original late 18th Century French language manuscript mathematics book with approximately 100 pages of handwritten questions theories responses and other complex mathematical and geometric forms and equations being what appears to be an advanced student of the subject's personal workbook. An ownership inscription of 'P. Reynaud' and his same signature after most entries all in a very fine precise and sometimes teeny hand writing illustrated throughout by graphs and geometric forms. We surmise the book was being prepared for final submission to their professor though not done given the title page was stopped with only the three letters: "GEO…" The book proper a quality book with marbleized boards and leather spine cap has about 200 pages of which half were used and very well filled. While undated we believe the book is undoubtedly late 18th Century given the paper ink and binding all appropriate to that era. ‎CINCINNATI OHIO OH. Good. 1908. On offer is an interesting very detailed archive of 18 original manuscript diaries handwritten by Cincinnati Ohio Reverend Charles G. Reade a man who is consumed by his visits with the poor the grieving the orphaned and needy. Educated prolific and meticulous he rarely misses a day right up until the end of his life. The 18 volumes are dated between 1908 and 1940 with 1915-1918 conspicuously absent and perhaps due to chaplain service in the military. Very detailed there are accounts of visits to the homes of those who've died from influenza and scarlet fever every visit records names and addresses and every restaurant visited. There are also travels recorded including Toronto and Detroit. The Reverend also records weather for every day but most importantly we learn of this pious dedicated man's every good deed every sermon and collector's and historians of the Cincinnati area is a detailed picture of Depression era and pre-World War II Ohio. It is apparent right from the early years that this man is unbelievably tireless in his devotion to the church and community. After the first years there is scarcely a day that passes in which he does not record going out into the community to lead sermons and teachings attend or preside at funerals marriages births and baptisms. When he writes "in office" or "at desk" one almost gets the feeling that there's a lot of guilt in it. Here are some snippets: January 31 1910: "Read Morning Prayer at 9. Taught 4th & 5th grades. Gave help to __ __. He has a job. Unpacked 100p. books & 100 hymnals belonging to city Mission Society. After lunch had funeral of Mrs Clara Hall at Central & 7th & Wesleyan Cemetery. She was probably murdered. Called on Kountz a patient from City Hospital at 3563 Colerain Ave. Paralyzed. Has wife &2 children." Excerpt from Tuesday October 22 1929: "President Hoover's visit to city. At desk in a.m. Wrote several letters. had burial services for Augeust Miller aged 53 died Sunday oct 20. Had been in Longview Hospital a long time." Finally on December 23 1940 Reverend Reade wrote his last entry: "Went to Dr Stewart Hagan's in taxi with Mrs Schreiber. Mr Henry G Mather took me -- taxi $15. Mr & Mrs Gentry & Robert called on us. They are going to Atlanta Ga. Gave $1 to colored clergyman. Talked to Lewis at Marietta O." Then on December 24 1940 Christmas Eve there is a single entry noting Eternal Rest and signed by his son Lewis Reade. Each book is a standard dated yearbook and were in different formats by years; the smallest format is about 3.5 by 6 inches and the largest is about 4.25 by 7 inches. Overall G. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES: One learns from one annual: "Rev. Chas. G. Reade" he was born September 18 1865 and he "took charge" of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Cincinnati in 1921. His family originated from the UK he was married to a woman named Nora who returned to England in her last years and had at least two younger brothers who were also reverends in England. He lived to the ripe old age of 75 and kept his journals faithfully right up to the day he passed away. ‎NEAR NORTH ADAMS MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Good. 1892. On offer is a super 1892 manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified Massachusetts man living near Petersburg Stephentown Berlin and Lebanon Springs on the New York - Massachusetts border. This diary will provide regional collectors or historians a dedicated diarist who mentions milestones throughout the book from politics religion births marriages many many deaths and his contacts for his many jobs and visitors. Death is mentioned very frequently - in the first week of the year three people die and it appears the young man's father does a number of odd jobs but works also as a sextant perhaps or a funeral director: "father came from North Adams with a casket for Josie Hull." "Henry Greene died about 8 o'clock this morning." "Father has been to Henry Greene funeral broke one of the handles on his casket." "Mrs. D.J. Hull died this morn." "Mrs. D.J. Hull funeral today at the house." He works in a shirt shop noting he made 116 doz. Button holes but he does many other jobs for pay and for the family running mail to the post office and train depot "when the train comes went to lodge corkr and took 2nd degree". There are many unusual notes including "took Mr. Martin to Troy to put him in insane asylum" and the next day "2 doctors examined him and said he was all right and let him go". We assume he's a Quaker most Saturday entries start with "father and i have been to meeting" but he also attends other churches "there was a lecture at the Baptist Church given by negro Adam Greene" or "miss Lent a blind woman preached" as well as temperance lectures. He mentions the election of Grover Cleveland and Corbett defeating John L. Sullivan "in 22 rounds" for the heavyweight championship. Other entries include baseball games trips to the circus and seeing a Ouija board for the first time. Of the many many names mentioned they include: Porter Lamphier Whilcar Fox The D.D.G.M. ‎NORTH AFRICA EGYPT TUNISIA BRITISH PALESTINE. Fair. 1943. On offer is a simply sensational fascinating original World War II British RAF manuscript diary of an airman named K. James Using a very interesting journal with portrait of an Egyptian pharaoh and North Africa maps as the endpapers. Our writer has inserted a block of papers used as a preface explaining the use of the diary he had charmingly dedicated to his parents. He also does a retrospective portion setting up the narrative. His signature ends the preface letter of explanation and then the actual entries begin dated May 14th 1943 through to winter of 1944 and then a final entry for February 23rd 1945. This airman has seen it all and been everywhere throughout the conflict in the Mediterranean and since the notebook is undated as diary goes his entries are long and very detailed. He begins with the end of the battle for Tunisia carries on with a most intimate personal diary that besides the factual details of the War going on around him and his duties he never fails to provide colourful background of his mates the natives his thoughts his loves his boredom his high and lows. In our experience this is a heads above the rest manuscript of the real life and times of this airman during his time throughout North Africa and Italy. The 6½ x 4½ inch book has a well filled 208 pages of which 5 or 6 are pages with autographs of his close personal narrative. The text block is somewhat loose but all pages appear accounted for. ‎WATERVILLE ONEIDA COUNTY NEW YORK. Good. 1907. On offer is a very interesting uniquely matched pair of original 1907 husband and wife manuscript diaries handwritten by Lillie A. Waterman nee Lillie A. Harris of Earlville New York and her husband of 9 years Warren D. Waterman of Waterville New York. Lillie is the true blue diarist in the family writing nearly every day and Warren does the best he can but sputters out in May. The diaries detail a picture of a rural farming family mostly dependant on selling butter drawing wood and dealing with the dairy cattle and calves. Lillie never fails to mention the weather her daily chores visitors sales of butter etc. and the hundreds of other things a rural wife deals with. Warren while he writes does only a slightly lesser job and it is very interesting to read side by side the same day's entries. Between the two there is a great deal of commercial and economic information of the times genealogical data and a great deal of the local events including births deaths accidents etc. relative to the Oneida Utica Waterville and Graycraft New York areas. Sergeant Wilcox lists his daily activities officer's rank and responsibilities condition of rifle reports hand drawn maps trench tactics gas warfare hygiene procedures notes on gas warfare tactical use of tanks procedures of courts martial shoe tests payroll notes and some financial sections duty roster diagram cook's duties recipe for bread longhand addition . There is also a letter to the Camp Commander of Schofield Barracks regarding a commission to Lieutenant as he has completed Officer's Training School. Wilcox identifies himself on the cover and notes 'Camouflage Chieftain' Military Training Camp Castner Brks barracks Oahu. ‎HICKORY NORTH CAROLINA NC. Good. 1938. On offer is a super original manuscript archive of three 3 handwritten diaries by Eugenia Vasseur Ivey later Bivens b. April 29th 1919 d. January 20 2011 who worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigations FBI beginning in 1942 for 35 years. Her sister Virginia also worked with the FBI. The books are all 5-year diaries dated 1938-1943 nearly full 1944-1948 2/3rds full and the last only for 1949 and about half full. Prior to her work at the FBI she attended college and taught and she may have also been a hotel clerk. While each year is not full this archive shines on a number of levels given that she writes during the war years travels a fair bit dates a lot and sometimes interesting things happen to her like meeting Norman Rockwell and getting his autograph. As a home front diary she notes blackouts air raids gas rationing and much more relating to life during the war. What may be of particular interest to historians and collectors of FBI material was the fact that she was a super diarist detailing her duties her contacts her bosses and matters from the mundane to bank robberies. We learn she quit the FBI over a transfer dispute but they came back to her months later asking her to come back which she did. We also note that she met her husband Winfred Lee 'Wint' Bivens at the FBI. She went from and average typist to a respected clerical employee and her test results and other works were highly commended it seems. Here are snippets of the early years: 1942 "March 11th Mother went to her club. I get supper. Heard that Elbert is worse so I call off my bridge club I was to have Thursday night. Elbert has Hodgkin's disease no cure. Went to his stomach. Has been having treatments at Duke for it about 3 years…March 12th Mother called me at school to tell me Elbert Ivey my 1st cousin died last night. Had busy day at school and company all afternoon after I got home. I went up to A. Blanches and helped in house from 7 to 9:30. So many flowers. He was only 42 years old. Has two sons 5 3. Married Isabelle Parker. Certainly so sad….June 7th Va. and I got up at 6:00 and did final packing car. By 8 boys came over and had breakfast with us. At 9:00 Va. And I left home by car for Silver Bay. I hated to leave mother and daddy. They helped us so to get off. We drove over Mts. all day and went over 45 and got 350 miles to Weston. West Va. By 9:30 at night. Beautiful dinner. Had no trouble. Had nice tourist home for night. Car ok. Jack and Dick were to leave after us going to Asheville and Smokey Mountains and then to Columbia S.C….June 14th Rained all day. I got up about 8 and went to work at front desk. Tom Helde is here for 2 weeks so he showed me a lot of things about job. I had afternoon off so I unpacked and straightened room. At night I worked until 11:00. Don Mac Naughton is back to be head desk clerk when Tommy H. leaves then a new boy is on other shift. I think I will like my job fine….June 15th I slept late as I had morning off. I worked in afternoon and night as Student Conference of 125 came in. It wasn't too bad registering the people. Most came by bus and train. I worked until 12:00 getting cash report made up and everything…. September 9th we got up early. Raining but we packed the car. Ate about 8 and went and told everyone goodbye. Left at 9:30. Beautiful drive even in rain. I drove into NY City at 6:00 P.M. Had room at Taft Hotel. At 8 Dick came and took Va. and I to Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe. The show was so good. Jack had to work so could not get off. All bright lights are out in NY these days…September 17th Va. Mother and I went to Charlotte. We interviewed by FBI man and he offered us jobs in office in Washington. I also saw Bell Tel. man offered me job at $70 per month but that is too low. Va. wants to go to Washington. I don't. But we have to have physical exams and they have to investigate. September 23rd Cut out red plaid skirt and black jacket. Neighbors came in and sat and talked. Then 2 page telegram from John Edgar Hoover telling us of our appointment as clerk in the FBI dept. and to report for duty September 28th. Va. and I both wired we accepted. Went up town in afternoon. We only hope we are doing right by going….September 29th Went to see U. Harry. He was so surprised to see us. Went again at 9:00. Heard more lectures all day. Took tour of building and went to J. Edgar Hoover's office but he was not in. At 6 we were given our assignments. I am to be typist in fingerprints called Identification Division. Va. with files. We begin work Wed. night 11:30 P.M. to 4:30 A.M. We had supper came to house and to bed early….October 29th I graded cards tonight instead of typing them. What will daddy do now for business…" 1943 "January 1st Slept late. Rainy. Went to work no holiday for us. Touhy gang was caught by FBI in Chicago. Heard from Earl. Went to show before work. Jack Benny in George Washington Slept Here. Good…April 7th All our office was called in today into Mr. Scott's office for efficiency report. Mine was excellent. Louise Clark and Va. were too but not others. I was proud of it. I told Mr. Scott that if I didn't get transfer to Charlotte I would probably resign in July. Also told Clark and office. How I want the transfer through….April 10th National Police Academy of FBI had its graduation exercises at 10:30. Va. and I and 2/3 of employees got to go. J. Edger Hoover spoke. Earl Godwin Garvy Firestone and Horace Beck Editor of Collier. So nice. Ate lunch in Internal Revenue Dept. Not so good. My office went out in afternoon and took pictures of us….May 4th Today Norman Rockwell artist for Saturday Evening Post was at Hecht Co. selling bonds and giving copies of his 4 Freedom pictures away. Va. and I went at lunch time to buy a bond and N. Rockwell autographed one of the pictures. He is very homely looking." For months she tells the FBI she wants to transfer to Charlotte or she will resign and finally on October 14 she does resign. After that she is out of work for several months waiting impatiently for the FBI to call for another job in the Charlotte area. Finally in 1944 she gets re-hired and spends the next 35 years with the FBI. There is also so much is happening in 1944 concerning the war and on August 6th she writes this entry about the Atomic Bomb: "August 6th 1944 Today we heard that U.S. used new and mighty bomb Atomic Bomb on the Jap Island of Hiroshima. So powerful it leaves nothing alive which it touches. 2000 times more powerful then B-29 bomb. Levels steel and everything. Wipes out whole cities. Terrible." Besides trips to places like Quebec in 1949 the most extensive seems to be in 1947 when she and her sister take a month and a half trip to the West Coast : "October 18th Thought I would go home after work today but decided not to and decided to go to office party at agent's house they rent out on river. Mr. and Mrs. Cole took me. About 50 or more there mostly married couples. We drank and danced. Had a fine time. I had a time with key and Mr. Cole had to come help me open door at 2 A.M." "December 6th Nice day. Helen is so excited about her trip. She leaves in morning at 4:27 A.M. We had office party out at two agent's house out near river. Nicest place! Had juke box and all decorated for Xmas. About 60 there. Mr. and Mrs. Cole took me. I had fine time and feet tired from dancing. Got home about 2:15 A.M. Even the boss came a few minutes but I didn't get to dance with him." Included are a number 9 of unidentified photos of we assume Eugenia and her family. ‎AKRON OHIO OH. Good. 1891. Full-Leather. On offer is a super original 1891 manuscript relic of a Victorian Era teacher named of Jennie T. Weimer handwritten while Jennie was in her 8th year of teaching at the University of Akron founded in 1870 as Buchtel College and while she does not specify the University of Akron she makes mention Professors Glover Wise Hamblin and Fraunfelter and writes about the "New Building" and Crouse Gymnasium and Albert Hall which makes the fact it is U of A conclusive. Jennie was born on August 8th 1865. Her mother was Mary C. Weimer and either her father died or left them at an early age because the 1880 census show 14 year old Jennie living with her step father George T. Rankin a carpenter and her mother and two half-brothers Irving Cornelius and George Thomas. Jennie is also listed on Akron's school board directory as a teacher. The page a day book is very full and a treasure trove of local history and genealogy for historians and researchers in Akron Ohio. She does a super job of listing many names and local events. The diary is not only full of her days of teaching and social events but also in the summer of this year she takes a two week trip to Eagle Harbor and also travels to Niagara Falls. Here are some snippets: 1891 "January 21st I arose at 7. Went to school a little before 8 on the car. Taught all day and came home on the car at 12:15. Crocheted and went back about one on the car. I went down the street at eleven and bought a handkerchief case and glove case for Mart also a black silk handkerchief for him. Ma was 44 years old today. I came home about five in the car this evening because it was raining. Walt was over in the evening and went home at 9:30. Clapp was here to tea and remained for the evening going to the Hotel at eleven. I received a letter from Mart and retired at 11:30." "February 3rd I arose at 6:30. Went to school on the car at 8 and taught all day. Came home at 12 on car. Did some mending and went back at one. Walked because the electricity left the wire. Came home about five on the car. Mrs. Bates was here a little while. I was at home all evening and wrote to Mart and retired at nine. It was a snowy cold day." "February 7th I arose at 6:30. Miss Carothers and I took the 9 o'clock train and went to Cleveland. It rained and snowed all day long. But never the less we had a nice time. We went to dinner with Mr. Clapp. She and I did some trading in the morning and then went to hear the "Black Hussar" by McCaul Opera Company then did some trading and went to "Live and Let Live" for super. We came home at 10:15. I retired at 11:30. I received a letter from Mart and from Howard." "March 25th I arose at 7. Went to school at 8 and taught all day. I came home at 11:45 on the car. Ma and I got a dozen of white roses and sent up for Mrs. Rood's funeral. They had the funeral at 6:30 P.M. and then went to the depot and took her to Wellington for burial. I went to the depot. Walter and Charles Mottinger were here in the eve. I received a nice letter from Mart and a notice from Joseph Mitchell and Co. I retired at 11." "May 12th I arose at 6:30. Went to school at 8 on the car. Taught all day and came home at 11:30 on the car. Received a letter from Ada and answered it. Did not get it mailed today. I went back on the car at one. Came home about six. In the evening ma and I went to the Evangelical Church and heard Jay Staninger the 6 year old boy orator lecture on the "Inequality of Man." It was very good. We came home about ten and I retired at 10:45. Received a letter from Mrs. Holcomb." "May 30th I arose at 5:30. Went to the depot at 9 and saw the crowd off to the picnic for the Reserved Corp of the Central M.E. Church of Cleveland held a picnic with our class at Stow. I went up with Mrs. Young in the carriage. Had a delightful day. I spent a good share of the day with the Misses Climo and Mr. F. Hester of Cleveland. On offer is a charming original 1939 manuscript travel diary detailing one couple's summer trip to the West Coast handwritten by Robert Pauseh who through casual research we believe lives in Berwyn Illinois he notes he lives at "2944 Wisconsin Avenue" which it appears is in Berwyn. Robert writes about 40 pages detailing a rather extensive trip taking in numerous states National Parks and Canada. Here are some snippets: 1939 "June 12th Left home at 7:30 C.S.T. Arrived at Raymond at 12:15 at Bandy's. It started to rain. Went through the Ozarks. Scenery just grand. Gentle rises in hills and deep valleys. Stopped at dandy tourist cabin. Two bedrooms electric light steam heat radio fan tile bath. In the evening we went to see Three Smart Girls Grown Up with Deanna Durbin. Went to bed at 10:00." ‎CHINA PRC. Good. 1970. On offer is an interesting archive of three 3 circa 1970s manuscript books of handwritten cultural insight into the People's Republic of China. Book 1 is a collection of excerpts from a series of Mao's published speeches and addresses in 1950s and 1960s some of which are copied from Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung. They mainly detail ways to motivate the public especially the importance to encourage young adults to "Be loud be open be independent be self-sustaining" "Exert yourself strive for the best". Also included are discussions of ways to construct a communist society. Book 2 is a collection of famous quotations allegorical sayings excerpts from novels and books including books on agricultural education-named 24 Agricultural Solar Terms Nong Ye Er Shi Si Jie Qi which included mnemonics of the solar terms and descriptions of the activities of the agricultural industry. Interestingly it includes details of various natural remedies to common sickness and a collection of lyrics and techniques for improving writing. Book 3 is in two parts: Part 1 of this book is devoted to famous quotations and excerpts with the purpose of encouraging the writer herself to study strenuously with the hope of contributing to society. ‎1870 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY THE LOVE OF A CIVIL WAR AND INDIAN WARS HERO‎

‎ERIE NEW YORK. Good. 1870. On offer is a super original 1870 manuscript diary handwritten by Leonora Finn later Bodamer of Erie New York. The diary is a significant historical relic stretching back to the Civil War as we learn from casual research that in 1871 Leonora married John A. Bodamer who fought in the Civil War and ended up in a Confederate prison camp was released and in 1870 the year this diary represents headed to Fort Dodge and became a hero during one of the battles there in the Indian Wars. In fact one of the battles was named "Bodamer's Fight." The diary details John and Leonora's courting and engagement year. In the beginning John is home he lives in Buffalo with Leonora and the first few months are spent with the couple dating. Then in February John heads Fort Dodge Kansas with the army and doesn't get back home until December. The entire time he is gone she is love sick lonely and says she can hardly go on without him. He writes about 80 letters home to her and on a couple of occasions she writes a few comments on his experiences with the Indians. For example on July 13th she writes: "Today is very pleasant. I do not feel very well though. I received four letters from John this afternoon. He has been in a large Indian battle and has many honors bestowed upon him for his gallant conduct…." Likely this is a reference to "Bodamer's Fight." History records that John A. Bodamer and 25 men of Company F 10th Cavalry were escorting a large ox train from Fort Dodge to Camp Supply about 80 miles south. Near the edge of Indian Territory about 100 Cheyenne's attacked. Bodamer corralled the wagons and fought off the Indians until nightfall then dispatched Pvt. William Edmonson to Camp Supply for reinforcements. Narrowly escaping capture Edmonson reached the post at 11 P.M. When Capt. Nicholas Nolan arrived the next morning the Cheyenne's were gone. During the fight Bodamer and his men killed three Cheyenne's and wounded ten. Two soldiers a Cpl. Freeman and a Pvt. Winchester were wounded. I actually found a photo on the web with some of the men from the 10th Cavalry taken in 1870. While we reiterate this is Leonora's diary but it gives such great insight to their love affair and relationship as one will see in the following entries. 1870 "January 1st Another year 1870. It does not seem possible. But this year I was in the Reed House Ball Room when 1870 came in and 1869 departed. John and I attended the fancy dress ball given by H. Brniala Boat Club and we did not get home until four o'clock this morning. John left me at five. He came down about eleven o'clock for I had asked him to spend the day with me. We did not go out all day. Caddie Tompkins and Free Noble spent the evening with us. John gave me this diary and in 1871 we are to exchange diaries." "January 3rd This morning it is cold. John was down awhile but I was quite fussy and could not talk with him much. He came down this afternoon again. We did not go out for I thought it too cold. I asked him to stay to tea with me but he did not stay. We did not go out this evening. While we were sitting in the dining room reading a fire alarm sounded. We looked and found it to be on the dock. John went down to see it and then came back for me and I went too." "January 7th It is just 6:30. I just came down stairs. I wonder if John did go this morning if so at the time of my writing he is jotting along on the engine by this time. He told me that he would be up again on Monday perhaps. It is now afternoon. This morning I expected that John was on his way home but about 10 o'clock he came in and said that he missed the train this morning and was going at 11 o'clock. He bid me good by again sitting by the window just now and he went by with some man in a sleigh." "January 8th It is snowing hard this morning and is very cold. Last evening I looked for John until 8:30 and he did not come. I was just going to my room when some one knocked. I went to the door and it was John. As soon as he came in I smelt liquor on his breath. It did make me feel badly and I had him explain to me how it was which he did to my satisfaction. He took it as a medicine. I talked to him however and he felt badly. We spent a pleasant evening and he left me at 12 o'clock." "February 5th Today is very pleasant day and after dinner John and I went up to Lott's photograph gallery and after we came out of Mr. Lotts we did several errands and then came home. This evening Jon and I were going to the Academy of Music but did not go for we found out that it was not very much. So we went up to Jennies and spent the evening. John stayed with me this evening until 12:15." "February 7th Just twelve o'clock and John is lying down on the sofa and I am sitting by him. He leaves for the depot at 4 o'clock. 4:10 and my darling has gone. Oh! How lonely and wretched I am. He may not be back again for one year. Oh! How long a time to wait for one whom I love as much as Jon. He felt very bad indeed and could not keep the tears from his eyes. God watch over him." "February 11th Today is quite warm but I think that we shall have rain by this afternoon. This noon I received a letter from John and it was written on his way west and mailed at Quincy Ill. He says he is very lonely and missed me very much also says that he is well. This afternoon it did not rain and mother and I went up to the dentist. This evening no one was in and so I answered John's letter and wrote to grandma also." "February 21st She has a cross through this passage and then at the bottom of it writes "Naughty Spunky Girl" Another day that all has gone wrong and this afternoon I am determined that I will stay at home no longer for I am always causing some trouble. We went to the depot for General Thomas's remains passed through this afternoon. It was a sad affair. I mailed a letter to Sarah this afternoon. Had no company this evening. Wrote a few lines to John after I cam to my room." "May 17th Today has been very warm. I have been out all day. I received a letter from Allie Southward this morning. Will answer soon. Did not go out this evening. About twilight I was thinking of John and I had a very gloomy spell come over me and it seems as though I could not wait so long for him to come home to me." I wish he were with me now. The darling. He went to Buffalo this morning to spend New Years day with his people. Mother has just reminded me that this is the last New Years Eve I shall ever spend at home as Leonora H. Finn. And so it is for John and I are to be married one week from next Wednesday." BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES: Leonora was born in August of 1852 in Pennsylvania to the parents of Philander and Leonora Finn. John was born in December of 1839 in Buffalo New York to the parents of John F. and Elizabeth Stouder Bodamer. He enlisted in the war of the Rebellion in April of 1861 as a private in Co. B 21st N.Y. Inf. In 1863 he reenlisted in the 24th N.Y. Cavalry and was promoted to second lieutenant and later to adjutant. He fought in the Spotsylvania campaign and the battles of North Anna River Cold Harbor Petersburg and was a prisoner at the Confederate camps Belle Isle and Danville. At the close of the war he was commissioned lieutenant in the 10th U.S. Cavalry for two years and this is about the time the diary takes place. John and Leonora were married in January of 1871. The diary measures about 3" x 4 ¾" and is 1" thick. It's in good shape other than a worn cover. ‎1849 - 1855 MASSIVE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND JOURNAL DETAILING THE LIFE AND TIMES OF A LOCKPORT NEW YORK MAN WHO WOULD SOON BE ELECTED TO THE STATE LEGISLATURE OF NEW YORK‎

‎LOCKPORT NEW YORK NIAGARA COUNTY. Fair. 1849. On offer is a super original 1849 - 1855 historic manuscript relic of Western New York being a handwritten journal and diary of John Gould who was a member of the New York Legislature in 1856. Hand dated September 16 1849 to June 10 1855 hand numbered 455 pages makes for a very full very detailed treasure trove of history for the Lockport Niagara County area of New York State. Gould's family were deeply ensconced in the Lockport economy: farming wheat and barley lumbering horses and all manner of other trading throughout the area. Trade economics commerce genealogy religion politics and local events are all detailed by a copious recorder of family daily doings and history. Gould also came back to the book using the free endpapers to leave notes on the death of his father mother building a new house on property bought in 1862 his son's Charles Gould service volunteering two years 29 August 1862 during the Civil War with the 44 Elsworth Regiment New York. The approximately 6 3/4" x 8 1/4" once gorgeous book is absolutely full handwritten in ink and features marbled endpapers raised bands original full leather with ornate trim. The exterior leather is quite worn spine leather well chipped and separated at the back cover. The spine backing is cracked. ‎CASTLE ARCHDALE IRELAND WARRINGTON UK HAGERSVILLE. Good. 1944. On offer is a unique original 1944 - 1948 manuscript 5 year World War II diary handwritten by a Royal Canadian Air Force R.C.A. F. serviceman named we believe Cross as evidenced by the note: "CAN. R. 97172 LAC. CROSS. T.d. R.C.A.F." on the personal identification page. The diary covers 1944 through 1946 which are full of entries and then just a few for 1947 and 1948. The diary covers this Canadian's service in Ireland at the renowned 423 Squadron Castle Archdale until November 1944 then to Warrington England until December 1944 and then back to Canada to the SFTS Service Flying Training School Hagersville near Hamilton Ontario. During World War II Hagersville was the home of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan station 16 Service Flying Training School teaching trainee pilots how to fly the Harvard and Anson aircraft. This diary offers a unique perspective on a number of levels: on the one hand our writer details the war effort as only an enthusiastic serviceman itching to be in the thick of it will report but then he also provides a fascinating look into the transition from War to peace and his reintroduction into non-service life with his new wife as of June 1944 and then a baby son a year or so later making for a Canadian War Bride story too. Lastly one gets a feel for the home front in Ontario in the last year of the War and shortly thereafter. One fascinating entry in November of 1944 relates: 'Zombies' rioting in Canada burning flags striking officers because of talk of conscription for overseas service.' Here are just a few snippets of the many notable entries: 1944 "January 1st & 3rd Lectures on grenades and drill in morning. OM drill later in morning. Off in afternoon. Wrote letters all evening. Berlin raided again. Tonight 1000 tons down….I was flight commander today. Down in hangers all morning. On drill in afternoon. In camp all evening. Played snooker and wrote letters." "March 11th Worked on hull of "D.3" all day and finished at 1900 hrs. "W2" sank sub last night and got shell through front of hull. Wrote letters and played poker." "May 27th Up at 0500 hrs. Same old trip over. Had fun sober in Belfast with wing. Ral. prisoners reported at Belfast today. Swedish. "Grisholm." Saw "This to the Army." "June 5th Stayed in hotel all day. Cross does a super job mentioning the people and places he meets including: Bronte Beach Enniskillen Wolverhampton Belfast Preston Hagersville Hamilton and Toronto and many many more. The cover of the diary has pulled away from the spine in the front and so has the first page but the binding and the rest of the pages are together but there is a bit of foxing on the edges of the pages. ‎BULLS FERRY NEW JERSEY. Fair. 1829. On offer is a super original 1829 manuscript mathematics copybook and school book handwritten by James McDonald of Bulls Ferry New Jersey and was bought October 11th 1829. The book features beautiful period penmanship. The breadth and depth of this copybook is remarkable with many dozens of complex and basic problems and solutions and explanations including: simple addition subtraction multiplication and division simple reduction apothecaries' weight long measure land measure liquid measure dry measure and compound addition and subtraction. Some of the money problems are in "Federal Money" and some are still in British Pounds. The book is in rough shape: the front cover of the 120 page book and the first couple pages are separated from the text block but are still present. Some of the rear pages are stuck together some with loss but most of the remainder are intact. All of the pages are age toned some have tears and some have edge wear. The covers are hard boards and some of the binding still remains on the spine. HISTORICAL NOTES: Bulls Ferry takes its name from a pre-Revolutionary settlement of the family Bull who operated a ferry to the burgeoning city of New York across the river is the area along the Hudson River in the North Hudson County New Jersey municipalities of West New York Guttenberg and North Bergen. During the Revolutionary War it was known as Block House Point and was occupied by British forces and was site of several skirmishes between them and the Americans. Brigadier General Anthony Wayne led American troops from New Bridge on a raid against the blockhouse on July 20 1780 after which it was abandoned and when British troops decamped to the fort at Bergen Neck. Like Burdett's Landing to the north it was a crucial crossing point. Ferry service continued for several decades until steam ferries notably from Hoboken replaced the earlier row-and-sail service. Larger terminals to the north at Edgewater and south at West Shore Railroad Terminal at Weeehawken operated until the 1950s. ‎ESTES PARK DENVER GREELEY COLORADO CO. Good. 1919. On offer is a super original photo album compiled by an unknown traveller memorializing a trip taken to Colorado in 1919 there are a few photos from 1912 1918 and 1920 mostly of the Estes Park Denver and Greeley Colorado. Of particular interest to historians and collectors of the area are some great 'bird's eye views' of Denver and photos of the town of Greeley. Other highlights include a long shot photo of an Indian war dance in the Garden of the Gods. There is an inventory of the photos later in the listing. There is also a photo of the famous Stanley Hotel in Estes which we believe is unique. There is even a 4 photo "panorama" shot consisting showing an unnamed valley and mountains in the background but believed to be the Rocky Mountains. In this panorama it also shows their car with several people standing beside it. Fortunately there are handwritten titles for most of the photos. There are 7 more that don't have markings plus a larger 5" x 7" photo showing a large group of people dressed in all kinds of costumes taken on a front lawn. They are holding a banner but I can only read "Big Carnival at ____Lawn" On the bottom of the photo is "Photo Ronald Woodbine Ia." The 53 page album contains over 115 photos all but three attached with the black photo corners plus they seem to be glued too. The photos range from fair to great two are bent but overall G. Then two loose photo postcards in the back. One shows a group of people in the Manitou Park Colorado tram car and one of a group of people standing by a river. It has "transferred" stamped on the front and back. Finally a snap shot which shows a woman in a beautiful dress and it's marked "Photo by Westcott" and on the back is written "1921 Phyllis Burgoin H. S. Junior H. S. Banquet Dress." Most of the photos measure about 3¼" x 5¼" with a few smaller than that. The album itself measures about 7 ¼" x 11 ¾" and the covers are in great shape but we note a hint of mustiness. ‎1894 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY THE BRIDE TO BE IN AN INTERESTING DECEMBER - MAY MARRIAGE‎

‎CHATHAM NEW YORK NY. Good. 1894. On offer is an original manuscript diary and fascinating late 19th Century look at love and relationships and most interestingly a May-December pairing of 33 year old Annie C. Mead b. 1861 of Chatham New York to 21 year old Sherman b.1873. Handwritten by the bride in 1894 we learn that Annie marries Sherman an undertaker as per the 1930 census on March 14th of 1894. She writes every day from January 1st to October 8th with only 14 days missed between those months. After October 8th the diary has no entries other then in the back memoranda where she's filled out two pages showing what they received for wedding presents. Annie's does a great job as a diarist providing names genealogical information local events and insight into her life. Another interesting item we note from her writings is that Sherman suffers from constant headaches. They are so bad at times that he has to stay in bed all day. Of further interest to researchers of women studies and gender issues is that Sherman is under the care of Dr. Hattie Van Buren. Here are some snippets: 1894 "January 6th Powder well exploded at Rosendale. Shook our house like an earthquake. I cleaned the parlor and dining room in the morning. Sewed until 4 P.M. Went up street and paid bills. Spent the evening playing hymns and studying S. S. lesson." "January 15th Mary Washed. I did the house work. Sewed until noon. About 2 o'clock Sherman came for me to go to Valatie for my watch. We saw where Kendall's building had burned the night before. Went to Mrs. Mead's for tea. Walt Pears lost his baby that morning. Mr. M. brought us home. Rained so stayed in." "February 23rd Sarah mamma and I sewed all day. I went to bank jewelry store Rogweski's and Hattie Wheeler's in the afternoon. Mamma was taken sick with colic in afternoon. Was sick all night. Sherman came about seven and went to lecture. He stayed all night." "March 14th Wedding Day Worked all the morning clearing the rooms. Helen and Clara went to Roller's for flowers to decorate the rooms. We were married at half past two by Reverend William F. Compton. Left for Albany at 5:08 P.M. Stayed at the Globe Hotel." "March 17th Packed our bag in the morning. Spent the time from there until three o'clock talking to Mr. and Mrs. Ketchwick. Took the three o'clock horse car for Mechanicville. Took train for Albany and 5 o'clock train for home. Found mamma much better." "March 22nd Sherman too sick to go to the farm. His father came to see him. Got him some medicine which he took. Was quite sick in the afternoon. I had to go up street. Hart Johns shot himself." "April 2nd Mrs. Mead and I went to Albany at 11:40. Brought carpet shades and curtains and some cups and saucers. Got home at six o'clock. Sherman had been home. He met us at the train. He and I went up street in the evening." "May 3rd Sherman so sick with his head that we went to Dr. Hattie Van Buren. She told him not to work for a few days. Mrs. Mead cleaned the setting room. Sherman put up shades in the parlor and helped dust wall paper." "May 30th Went to Chatham about 10 o'clock. Mamma and I left for N. Y. on 12:15 train. Sherman came home and went to work in Mr. Waugh's garden. Mamma and I reached North Haven 20 minutes late. Charles and Reni met us." "June 16th & 17th Sherman too dizzy to get up. About nine o'clock we went to Chatham to the doctor. Then to mama's. S. spent most of afternoon in bed. Went up street for few minutes in the afternoon….Sherman some better. A very full 121 pages of 124 in the 6.25 inches by 3.25 inches page book as Sheward kept meticulous track of his daily duties including checking freight cars guarding offloaded liquor shipments escorting money shipments to Victoria BC chasing miscreants throwing bottles out of railcar windows assisting injured rail yard workers re-sealing opened freight cars and even investigating theft of money on board boats. Lots of mentions of ships plus he also worked at a large rail yard in Coquitlam about 25 miles east of Vancouver. ‎CRAIGALLIAN SCOTLAND TO SS AROYO TO AUSTRALIA. Good. 1888. On offer is a super 1888 - 1889 original travel diary handwritten aboard a ship identified as the S.S. Aroya detailing a trip from London to Australia. The author signs the diary on the fep as Mrs. Wilhelmina Barns Graham Craigallian who we believe is traveling with her husband Allan Graham Barns-Graham whose online biography we have reproduced at the end of the listing. Dated December 1888 through June 28 1889 Mrs. Barns Graham is a sensational diarist leaving few details unwritten starting with a comprehensive list of the passenger's names status destination and their occupations and then near daily entries of the voyage. One online source provides: BIO NOTES: ALLAN GRAHAM BARNS-GRAHAM: "The Chairman of Lanarkshire County Council is a son of Patrick Graham W.S. Edinburgh and was born in that city in 1835. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy entered on a manufacturing and commercial career and at the age of twenty-one went to Calcutta. The Suez Canal was not then thought of and the railway across Egypt was not opened but he went by that route and sailed from Suez in the paddle-wheel steamer of that time. One of his earliest experiences in India was the Mutiny during which he enrolled for service in the Volunteer Cavalry. Two years later in China he was among the first civilians to enter Canton after its capture and was blockaded by Chinese rebels in Shanghai. He also spent some time in Manila and would have entered Japan but found the country closed against foreigners. In 1860 he came home and took a partnership in the firm of Crum Graham & Co. for four years till the concern was wound up. His next experience was that of manager of a Calcutta bank which had become involved in mining speculations in Nevada and California. He went to these countries to try and retrieve the fortunes of the undertaking but these falling out ill he returned and became principal buyer for a large house of East India merchants in Manchester. Once more he went to Calcutta as a partner of the firm of Graham & Co.; then in 1875 he succeeded to the family estates; and since that time has devoted himself to the public business of the counties in which his interests lie. He is the owner of Craigallan in Stirlingshire Lymekilns in Lanarkshire Fereneze in Renfrewshire and Kirkhill in Ayrshire. For five years 1861-5 he was a captain in the 3rd Renfrewshire Rifle Volunteers and for a considerable time more recently was Parish Council Representative of Strathblane on the Western District Committee of Stirlingshire. His chief energies however have been devoted to Lanarkshire. On the passing of the Local Government Act of 1889 he was elected as representative of the South Division of Cambuslang on the County Council. In 1893 he was appointed Chairman of the Middle Ward District Committee and in 1898 he became Convener of the County. He is also one of the Extra Parliamentary Panel of Commissioners under the Private Legislation Scotland Act of 1899. He is a Justice of the Peace and Deputy-Lieutenant for the Counties of Lanark and Renfrew. Mr. Barns-Graham married in 1868 Wilhelmina daughter of William Carstairs M.D. and has had a family of four daughters and four sons of whom three daughters and two sons survive." The diary is in good condition internally butt the binding is not in place an the first section has come somewhat loose. ‎LYCOMING COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA STEUBEN COUNTY NY. Good. 1895. On offer is the super original manuscript diary handwritten by Esther Marie Gernit Bullock b.1852 who lived in or around Lycoming County Pennsylvania or Steuben County New York. She is married to Francis Joseph Bullock and they have four children; Charles Edgar Walter Herbert Allen Gernit and Edna Maria. This is a very large very full diary measuring about 7 ¾" x 13" with 250 pages of daily entries covering September 30th 1897 all the way through to April 6th 1900. We learn that three of her four children are no longer living with them or soon on their way out. This greatly affects Esther and on many occasions she talks about being so lonely and missing her children greatly. The family moves two times during the time span the diary represents but only to a different house or location in the village. The boys seem to work for the railroad and she doesn't like it at all because of how dangerous the work is. Frank is retired but seems to be looking for work. There is also talk of the Spanish American War her first grandchild born to Charles Edgar her grandmother Bullock passing away and the funeral traveling to the near by villages talk about how the New York Central Railroad Company has taken over the Fall Brook Central RR Company line Cyclone flooding and so much more. On numerous occasions she says her days are "terrible and tedious". She also writes a very intriguing entry on October 6th 1898 telling that something so terrible has happened and filled them all with so much grief that she can't write it down. Here are some snippets: 1897 "October 4th Froze hard last night and was real cold this morning. Warm in the afternoon. Frank helped me wash in the forenoon. After dinner he went over town. Walter went to Hornellsville to see about getting on to the Erie road but it seems as if I never can stand it to have another boy on the railroad. It has caused me a great many tears and unhappy hours. I rather he would do most anything else. Edna went over to Charles Edgar's a little while. He got back from Williamsport about noon." "November 18th Snowed and blowed. Frank is not much better. Walter worked but was so rough Allen did not start out. Charles Edgar invited us over there to eat dinner with them. It is a year today since they were married and it seems a long year to me since he went away from home. He ought to have gotten back from his trip about noon but it was nearly night but we did not eat dinner until he came. Edna got dinner and supper here at home. Jarvis expects to go to work in a few days." "December 2nd Pleasant but cold. Walter worked in shop. Jarvis and Allen have found work and are going to begin tomorrow. ‎CASTLETON VERMONT ELIZABETHTOWN NEW JERSEY NJ. Poor. 1846. On offer is a very interesting original 1846 - 1849 manuscript diary handwritten by James Ross a hardworking young teacher turned medical student. James at some point moved to Castleton Vermont in Rutland County and worked in the area while teaching school. He then goes on to study medicine with a local doctor and eventually moves to Elizabethtown New Jersey 69 Canal Street where he matriculates at New York City College. His daily life is on every page of this small leather bound journal that he easily carried in his pocket and took it everywhere with him it seems. We learn in Castleton that he taught school "had 12 scholars today a good day" worked in a small drug store and studied medicine with Dr. Eliakin Paul. James mentions the name Woodward several times and casual research informs us that Mr. Woodward owned the first drug store in town working from his home. Eventually the drug store was erected on the corner east of the Methodist Church where they did a large business furnishing medicines to physicians in the vicinity also to graduates of the medical college. The store also sold surgical instruments as James Ross mentions in this diary. James keeps meticulous notations as to the price of numerous items he would purchase monies paid to him for books money borrowed from his brother or relative; Reuben Ross Jr.; where and with who he lived in a boarding house; where he "staid overnight"; the names of his friends and of his diversions. He mentions Dr. Nichols Dr. Parker and his lectures Dr. Paul Dr. Page Dr. Clark Gillman Barker Mott lectures etc. His daily notes include the 4th of July fire works in Vermont were the best he had ever seen; goes to visit the Woodruff family at Connecticut Farms and rode there with Mr. Fortought; Woodruffs all well went to a prayer meeting at the old schoolhouse and saw some old friends; apparently James was originally from Connecticut. Got back home to VT went to work all day delivered some medicine to A. Hotch; some elixir and then went to hear Dr. Bostwick speak. James went to the hospital to see soldiers that were sick and being treated with lead wash and liniment. Went to Hope Chapel to listen to Mr. Buckingham and Mr. Chapin talk about capital punishment and came away "fully convinced capital punishment should be established. "Went to a camp meeting in Fairhaven where he attended a lecture with "nearly 30 students together." Went to Chatham Theatre and to the museum where he saw a giant boy etc. He purchases new clothes had his boots renailed sheared sheep for his father went hunting and killed a pheasant and attended the Methodist church in town. Heard a lot of swearing at a political meeting in Sept. where "men were caucusing in every direction." Went to the fair in Rutland Vermont etc. Went to town clerk and took the oath for surveying closed on a few deeds. Certainly a very busy young man with a lot of "irons in the fire"; teaching working studying medicine and having somewhat of a social life as he writes of numerous friends.
