Modern full calf may be leatherette but doubtful fine binding in a butterscotch color with hubbed spine and with gold-stamped title and rules over a black morocco label. The binding has a beautiful hand and is in superb condition with scarcely any evidence of wear. Unbumped spine head and tail with sharp corners. With 5 vi to xxxix and 343 numbered pages 1. With large facsimile fold-out sheet tipped on to p. 119: Synoptic view of the principal characters of the earths and metallic oxides before the blowpipe. With B&W full-page plates opposite pp. 8 16 and 33 the plates foxed to one degree or another. Age-toning to the upper corners of the preliminaries. Scattered foxing throughout the book with some pages virtually free of foxing. Else an exceptionally clean and tight copy. A Very Good copy. Bleyswyk depicting Rome personified by an emperor as a stronghold against chaos under the protection of the Gods; in the middle stands the wise goddess Athena; she holds in her right hand the Palladion; Athena is the 'aquilifer' Eagle-bearer of Rome for in her left hand she holds the 'Aquila' the standard of the Roman army; with a long chain she holds the destructive forces of civil war and chaos under control Condition: Corners slightly bumped. Head of spine very slightly damaged. All 4 ties gone Note: The work of the Roman historian Velleius Paterculus ca. 19 BC - after 30 AD is a valuable source for the reigns of the Roman emperors Augustus and Tiberius. Paterculus who served 'under Tiberius in many of his most important campains seems to have conceived an unbounded admiration for him and the whole imperial family in whose men he could see nothing but sublime virtues while the ennemies were compact of every possible vice' H.J. Rose 'A handbook of Latin literature London 1967 p. 355. Velleius' adulatory type of history was however condemned by the later historian Tacitus who ignores him. The 'Historiae Romanae' consists of 2 books. The beginning of the first from the founding of Rome to the battle of Pydna in 168 BC in which the Romans defeated the Macedonian kingdom is lost. What remains of book one ends with the fall of Carthago in 146 B.C. Book 2 is of greater importance. 'Book 2 covering the period 146 BC to AD 30 becomes more detailed as it approaches the author's own day doubtless because as he tells us he projected a fuller history from the Civil War onwards.' OCD 2nd edition p. 1111/12. His style is less polished but we are to remember that he was more a soldier than an scholar. § Velleius Paterculus was in good hands with the Dutch scholar of German origin David Ruhnken or Ruhnkenius 1723-1798. David Ruhnken was born in Pommern and was sent by his parents in 1737 to the Friedrichscollegium in Königsberg where he read Latin authors together with his friend Immanuel Kant. To finish his studies he went in 1744 to Leiden to study Greek under Tiberius Hemsterhuis whom he admired. He later told his biographer Wyttenbach that that he found in his teacher the combined gems of Leiden classical scholarship Scaliger and Salmasius in one person. Hemsterhuis wanted to create a worthy successor and appointed him in 1757 to assist him as Reader in Greek. In 1761 Ruhnken succeeded the Latin chair vacated by Oudendorp. He became one of the leading scholars of his days. Then follow 60 p. 'Annales Velleiani seu vita Velleii Paterculi pro temporum ordine disposita ab H. Dodwello'. The rest of the volume is filled with the text and commentary of Ruhnkenius. Volume 2 beginning with page 500 contains the 'Variorum interpretum Notae'. On Ruhnken: ADB 29 615/24; and of course the dissertation of E. Hulshoff Pol 'Studia Ruhnkeniana' Leiden 1953 Provenance: Prize for Romboldus Brenkman Pitlo on the occasion of his promotion to 'supremam Mediae Classis ordinem' as the best pupil of his year primus. It is dated the 3rd of July 1801 and signed by the curators of the Gymnasium of Tiel W. de Roo G.J. Rink P. Ten Bosch and J. Dijkmeester and by 'Me Gymnasii Rectorem J. Posthuma'. A report of the prize ceremony can be found in 'Maandelijkse uittreksels of Boekzael der geleerde waerelt' 1801 p. 353/4: 'Thiel. Na dat op den 3den July het gewoone Zomerexamen gehouden was zyn op den eersten September eenige wakkere en veelbelovende jongelingen naar hoogere Classen bevorderd en met aanzienlyke eerpryzen beschonken. De Rector J. Posthuma opende deze plechtigheid met eene Redenvoering 'over den staat der Letterkunde vooral in de jongstafgelopen Eeuw in vergelyking met dezelve in de twee nog vroegere Eeuwen'. P.C. Stoltz welke naar de hoogste Classe der Rectors School bevorderd wierd hield hierop eene korte Redevoering over de spreuk by Vergilius 'nulla salus bello'; hierop hebben R. Mason Brayman announces his taking command of the Post of Bolivar per Major General J.B. McPherson's order and lists the several regiments that will report to this headquarters. Signed in type at the conclusion by M. Brayman as "Brig Gen'l Commanding Post." Brayman 1813-95 was a New York attorney who migrated to Michigan then Illinois -- where in 1848 when Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress and moved to Washington he rented the Lincoln's home. He served with the 29th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and rose to major general during a short but heroic career after the war editing the "Illinois State Journal" and n 1876 appointed Governor of the Idaho Territory. Given the crude typesetting quite possibly printed on a field press. Very scarce. unknown‎

Sir Henry Raeburn 1756-1823 was a Scottish portrait painter and Scotland's first significant portrait painter since the Union to remain based in Scotland. In 1833 he became Doctor of Medicine in Paris after completing his thesis on typhus in the East. As an ophthalmologist he accompanied physician Frédéric Jules Sichel all over Europe. Deval wrote many treatises on medical matters 1844 1851 1862 after first publishing this philhellenic travel chronicle which is illustrated with sixteen colour lithographs. <br> <br>This item is held off-site. Fine costume engraving of a Turkish artillery-man prepared for "Costumes orientaux inédits dessinés d'après nature en 1796 1797 1798 1802 et 1808." by the French engraver Georges-Jacques Gatine c. 1773-1841 after an original drawing by Manzoni. <br> <br>Giuseppe Manzoni fl. 1796-1829 a young Italian naval cadet arrived in Constantinople in 1796 aboard Le Republicain as a midshipman. He stayed there until the declaration of war between France and the Porte August 28 1798; when he was arrested and imprisoned in the fortress of Sinope on the Black Sea. On his return to France a selection of his drawings was published in Costumes orientaux inédits dessinés d'après nature en 1796 1797 1798 1802 et 1808 gravés à l'eau-forte termines a la pointe seche et colores avec des explications 1813. Only 250 of the complete suite was published and even individual plates are rare on the market. <br> <br>Among his other works is an elaborate and detailed panorama of Constantinople which took him three years to complete. <br> <br>See A. Producer Lloyd Friedgen added real and staged footage of wartime atrocities." It played to both American and Indian suspicions about the rise of China and appeared the year after Nehru's visit to Beijing. <br> <br>During the Communist Revolution in China a young Indian physician Dr Dwarkanath Kotnis Shantaram Rajaram Vankudre aids the resistance movement working against the development of germ warfare by Communist doctors and develops a serum then meets and courts a Chinese girl Ching Lan Jayashree. . ‎Handwritten letter from the Duke of Montrose regarding the Eastern Battalion of Stirlingshire Volunteer Infantry‎

‎1808. Very Good. 1 handwritten letter from the Duke of Montrose dated 3 May 1808 London responding to a request from Lt. Col. Simpson for scheduling the Eastern Battalion of Stirlingshire Volunteer Infantry for two weeks at Stirling. James Graham 3rd Duke of Montrose 1755-1836 was a member of Parliament in 1780 and from 1784 to 1790 and is said to be responsible for the repeal of the act prohibiting the wearing of tartans in 1782. He was Master of the Horse from 1790 to 1795 and from 1807 to 1821 during which period this letter was written. In Very Good Condition: creasing; darkened along upper edge; light ink from another letter placed on top while damp. unknown‎
