‎Philadelphia: Published by Bradford and Inskeep 1812. Hardcover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 12mo. xii 238 pages. The binding measures 7 inches tall by just about 4 1/2 inches wide. Hardcover bound in full tan leather. Binding is rubbed has bumping at corners and a small carved mark at the bottom of the rear board. The outer hinges have been reinforced with Japanese tissue. There is a red label pastedown and gilt bands. They are not raised. Endpapers are foxed. There is writing on the front/rear flyleaves and the front pastedown. "No 11" "Miss Scott Book 1878" The ink is rather heavy in some parts of the name making it hard to read. Text is toned has foxing. Some pages are chipped at the fore-edge and others show light damping. The inner hinges are secure. The corners of the text block are rounded and appear to have been trimmed that way. Text is toned and foxed and has some damp stains especially at the fore edge. Lindley Murray 1745-1826 was an American Quaker grammarian and lawyer and his was one of the most popular readers in America in the early and mid-19th century. He was born in Pennsylvania but lived for a time as a child in North Carolina until his family moved to New York in 1753. He studied law and became a successful lawyer but his interests lay in science and literature and in the 1780s he retired to England to write and to follow literary pursuits. This is a commentary on the Psalms and is NOT a Psalter. It does not contain the text of the Psalms. <br/> <br/> Published by Bradford and Inskeep hardcover‎

The binding is rubbed and has some soiling from handling is quite sound. There is a dark brown stain at the bottom edge of the title page from ink which affects the next few leaves and is also visible on the front wrapper. There are a couple of chips on the spine. An old partly erased signature is difficult to read "J. A. J."The text is toned. The subject of the address focuses on history and there is much about Cromwell throughout. Housed in a removable plastic sleeve with a board backing. Quite scarce. Thornton 436. Thomas Atkinson 1807-1881 was the third Episcopal Bishop of North Carolina. He was born in Dinwiddie County Virginia and he was one of four brothers who all went into either the Episcopal or Presbyterian ministry. He graduated from Hamden-Sydney College in 1825 and he was ordained by Bishop William Meade. He served in several places in Virginia and Baltimore and in 1853 he was elected Bishop of North Carolina and held that post for 28 years. This period was full of challenges for North Carolina the church and Atkinson as the country struggled with the Civil War and its aftermath. The issue of slavery was divisive in North Carolina before the War an Atkinson represented the complexity of the times. He was opposed to slavery but he was also against abolition. He had freed his own slaves years earlier and he wanted to be a calming and moderating influence hoping to bridge both sides of the issue. He rejected the notion of the inherent inferiority of blacks as a justification of slavery. He opposed Secession but when Lincoln sent troops to South Carolina he put the church at the service of the Confederates. After the War he continued to work to heal both sides and he was one of only two southern bishops to attend the Philadelphia Convention. In 1866 he put the control of the black Episcopal Churches wholly in the hands of the black clergymen. After the War he also spearheaded a move to open an Episcopal school for blacks near Raleigh. <br/> <br/> Holden & Wilson, "Standard" Office paperback‎

Rubbing and wear to the binding. Some foxing to the front cover the title page and a few other pages. There is browning to the rear flyleaves where a large newspaper page has been folded up. Text has a slight closed-in house aroma. Illustrated with photos throughout. The only author noted is Thomas L. Martin. However the newspaper article from the Winston-Salem Journal and Sentinel August 11 1957 notes that "Miss Flossie Martin a teacher in the Davie County Consolidated High School and Miss Mary Jane Heitman a Davie County historian helped him with the historical sketches." The binding shows wear and bumping but is sound with rubbed but secure hinges. Headcap of the spine is chipped. Small wormhole near the foot of the spine. Complete with endpapers and illustrated with 5 full-page copperplate engravings collates complete as well as several smaller text woodcuts. Early owner's signature on the recto of the frontis reads "Solomon Mordecai / Warrenton North Carolina Jan.y. 1st 1804." Another early signature for "Jos. Mordecai" is at the top of the title page. The Mordecai family was an important Jewish family in eastern North Carolina in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Jacob Mordecai founded the Warrenton Female Academy in 1809 and was assisted by his son Solomon and several daughters. This title was first published in 1761 by John Newbery in England thought to have actually be written by Oliver Goldsmith under the pseudonym of Tom Telescope. It was a science book written for youth. This is the First American edition. The Second American edition of 1808 is much more common. The "Teacher of Philadelphia" referred to on the title page is believed to have been Robert Patterson Professor of Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania. The binding is worn and the front hinge is cracking. Headcap of the leather spine is pulled and torn. Red and black title labels on the spine show some scuffing and edge chipping. All edges of the text block are nicely marbled. Marbled endpapers. The front flyleaf is stuck to the front pastedown a bit. Light to moderate foxing and toning throughout. The text block is quite sound. This is Volume 3 only of a three volume set that usually sells for several hundred dollars.
