1922 Typed Letter on Corporate Stationary Bearing the Signature of Montreal Businessman William Birks
Montreal Quebec Canada. Good with no dust jacket. 1922. Non-Book. On offer is a typed letter from William M. Birks 1868-1950 dated in Montreal June 22 1922. Written on Henry Birks & Sons Ltd. Letterhead the letter is thanking Montreal journalist C. L. Sibley for the biographical sketch that has been written of his the Birks history including a correction and requesting the special printing of some proofs. A handwritten note in pencil appears at the bottom that reads Je ne sais si cette lettre nous sera utile I don't know if this letter will be useful to us with unidentified initials seemingly unrelated to the content of the letter. William M. Birks Montreal businessman; son of Henry Birks founder of Birks Jeweller. William held a variety of significant posts including Vice-Presidency of Henry Birks and Company Governor of McGill University President of the Association of Canadian Clubs 1920 and President of the Montreal Board of Trade 1922. He also vigorously promoted church union and was interested in church architecture. A single page 8 x 10 inches on Henry Birks & Sons Ltd. Letterhead. Displays age toning and minor edge imperfections. Evidence of original folds plus a half-fold seam. Fold slits exist at several seams. On offer is this example of the signature of Harriet Martineau 1802-1876 British social theorist and Whig writer often cited as the Rst female sociologist. Name and date: "Harriet Martineau / Febry 16th 1835". Martineau wrote many books and a multitude of essays from a sociological holistic religious domestic and perhaps most controversially feminine perspective; she also translated various works from Auguste Comte. She earned enough to be supported entirely by her writing a rare feat for a woman In the Victorian era. This signature is on a small piece of paper 2-½ x 3-¾ inches. 1979 Letter and Photograph Donation to Canadian Archival Collection from Manitoba Premier Sterling Lyon
Manitoba Canada. Fair with no dust jacket. 1979. Non-Book. On offer Is a typed letter on Premier of Manitoba letterhead and signed by Sterling Lyon responding to a request of Canadiana material for an archival collection. Sent to one John Meek in Orangeville Ontario the Premier included a photograph for the collection. Dated February 14 1979 this lot includes the unsigned monochrome photograph and original envelope with postmark. Sterling Lyon was a lawyer cabinet minister and the 17th Premier of Manitoba from 1977 to 1981. His government introduced several fiscally-conservative measures and was sometimes seen as a local version of the government of Margaret Thatcher in the United Kingdom. He played a role in the 1982 patriation of Canadas Constitution and the development of the Charter of Rights and Freedom including the inclusion of the notwithstanding clause in the Charter which preserves the supremacy of Parliament with respect to constitutional matters. This letter measures 8-¼ x 10-¼ inches and bears creases from its original folds. The envelope is a standard #10 business envelope measuring 4-¼ inches tall and trimmed to just under 9 inches long. 1915 Typed Letter Signed by French-Canadian Senator and Speaker-Of-The House Napoléon-Antoine Belcour
Ottawa Ontario Canada Quebec. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1915. Non-Book. On offer is a typed letter written and signed by Napoleon-Antoine Belcourt 1860-1933 and dated May 8th 1915. The letter is on a page Canadian Senate embossed letterhead written to Paisley Ontario poet Thomas O'Hagan offering support for the recognition of J. Castell Hopkins at the University of Ottawa. Napoléon-Antoine Belcourt born in Toronto was a Franco-Ontarian parliamentarian lawyer and journalist member of the Canadian Senate. He was elected to the House of Commons as the Liberal member for Ottawa in 1896 1900 and 1904. He served as Speaker of the House in 1904 was appointed to the Privy Council in 1905 and to the Senate in 1907. Belcourt was president of the L'Association canadienne-française d'éducation de l'Ontario 1910-1912 and 1920-1930 and defended the cause of bilingual schools before the Privy Council in London playing a key role in the Unity League which succeeded in rallying English opinion to the Franco-Ontarian cause. In 1924 he was made an Officer of France's Légion d'honneur. This item is one age-toned page 8 x 10 inches with minor creasing evidence of folds and two staple piercings in the upper left corner. The embossing remains crisply detailed and the page bears a watermark of Cranes Japanese Linen 1913. Condition is Very Good. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1 pages; Signed by Author . unknown

1897 Typed and Annotated Letter of Canadian Minister Israel Tarte to MP Duncan Graham
Ottawa Ontario Canada. Good with no dust jacket. 1897. Non-Book. On offer is a typed letter written hand annotated and signed by Canadian Minister Israel Tarte. Dated September 6th 1897 this letter is on a letterhead from the Federal Minister of Public Works office in Ottawa written by Tarte in regard to a dispute between lumber and agricultural interests and suggesting he will attempt to work out a solution with some handwritten edits to Cambridge Member of Parliament Duncan Graham 1845-1934 who had just won a by-election in 1897 to Parliament his only term after a contested vote count in the 1896 Laurier landslide. Original postmarked Ministry-embossed envelope accompanies with initials J. I. T. and some anachronistic pencil writing present. Israel Tarte was a notary journalist newspaper owner and politician. Tarte came to prominence as editor of several newspapers Le Canadien L'Evénement La Patrie and the Quebec Daily Mercury. He was a Minister under Wilfrid Laurier. "The four elements that made him what he was - a francophone Catholic Canadian and British subject - sometimes led him in politics to try to square the circle." DCBThis letter measures 8 x 10 inches and includes an envelope 5-¼ x 4-¼ inches. Both items have clear crisp embossing though the letter shows signs of ink transfer from folding. The letter is age-toned with some browning edges and creases from original folds. The condition is Very Good. The envelope is torn from opening and shows signs of age-toning staining and wear. On offer is a typed letter signed from Lieutenant Colonel Gerald William Lingen Nicholson 1902-1980 dated April 16th 1957 on letterhead of the Anglican Church Diocese of Ottawa The Synod Office to The Editor Globe and Mail Toronto. The letter concerns sending a review copy of the newly published book Faith of Our Fathers 1957 by Reverend Robert Jefferson and Leonard Johnson. Reverend Jefferson was at the time the Bishop of the Diocese of Ottawa. At the time of publication the Diocese included the Deaneries of Arnprior Carleton Lanark Pembroke Prescott Russell and Stormont. Lt. -Col. G. W. L. Nicholson was a Canadian soldier historian author and teacher. He was the Director of the Historical Section Army Headquarters and is best known for his 1962 book Canadian Expeditionary Force 1914-1919 the only official history of Canada's participation in World War I. This item is a single page previously folded 7-¼ x 10 inches. There are small holes at the top left corner where a staple was removed. Herbert Fairlie Wood was a soldier author military historian and former commanding officer of 3 Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry PPCLl. WILLIAM NEKERVIS
1829 Handwritten Manuscript Letter from Virginia Bank Cashier to a Prominent New York Merchant Regarding Debts of His Bankrupt Former Business Partner
New York NY Virginia VA. Good with no dust jacket. 1829. On offer is a letter written by a cashier at the Farmers Bank of Virginia to a well-off client regarding the debt consolidation of a former business associate who declared bankruptcy. The letter dated April 10 1829 is written and signed by William Nekervis cashier for the Farmers Bank of Virginia. Nekervis was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania date unknown and prior to becoming a bookkeeper and then cashier in Virginia it is believed that he is the same William Nekervis who was a co-founder of the Philadelphia Society for the Instruction of Indigent Boys which became the Philadelphia Society for the Establishment and Support of Charity Schools. Nekervis died in Virginia in August 1837. In this letter Nekervis writes in his role as cashier of the Farmers Bank of Virginia to Tobias Isaac Tobias 1786-1861 a merchant based in New York City. He writes: .Since I last wrote to you two of Mr. Judah's notes have been consolidated and reduced to $240. The debt is now $455 in two notes $240 and $215 both due 27/30 April. We believe that Nekervis is writing about Mr. David Judah 1789-1866. On June 23 1823 Virginia newspapers reported that David Judah Tobias Isaac Tobias and Edward Pollock had become business partners in David Judah & Company a Virginia-based dry goods company. Less than five years later New York newspapers reported that on February 4 1828 T. I. Tobias & Co. Of New York legally separated from Virginias David Judah & Co by "mutual consent". It is clear that following the dissolution of his company Judah was in financial distress. In March of 1829 Judah sold off all of his possessions including his home and its contents his four female slaves one of whom was a nine-year-old and over 184 acres of land. The Kaplan Collection which holds some of Tobias' and Judah's correspondence reports that following his financial collapse Judah moved to Maryland. The letter offered here was written only months after a January 1829 letter held in the Kaplan Collection in which Nekervis responded to Tobias' question about Judahs outstanding debts owed to the bank. This letter adds to the knowledge of 19th century Jewish-American merchants and the burgeoning banking industry that funded their business ventures in the Jeffersonian-era. This letter is one page integral stampless address leaf and measures 8 x 10 inches. All volumes are red clothbound hardcovers with extended cream spine. Spines have a red and black title block with gilt titles and decorations. All books have spines which are darkly tanned tanned pages and more darkly tanned endpapers pencilled notation on fep and rep and faded topstain. Many volumes also have a tiny notation in the top corner of inside front cover. Each volume is detailed below with the most recent copyright date of the volume in parenthesis. 1. 30000 On the Hoof: 1940 304 pages. From page 1: "General Crook and his regiment of the Western Division of the U.S. Army were cutting a road through the timber on the rim of the Mogollon Mesa above the Tonto Basin. They had as captives a number of Apache Indians braves squaws and children whom they were taking to be placed under guard on the reservation." Edgewear bumped and worn heel of spine and back bottom corner soil to covers with a spot on back cover light spot on first page and outside pages small notation inside front cover. The men however were busy on pipes and cigarettes evidently having finished supper." Trail: 1948 409 pages. From page 1: "In the early sixties a trail led from the broad Missouri swirling yellow and turgid between its green-groved borders for miles and miles out upon the grassy Nebraska plains turning westward over the undulating prairie with its swales and billows and long winding liens of cottonwoods to show vast heave of rising ground - Wyoming - where the herds of buffalo grazed and the wolf was lord and the campfire of the trapper sent up its curling blue smoke from beside some lonely stream; on an done over he barren lens of eternal monotony." Bumped and worn corners and bumped head and heel of spine soil to covers front pastedown split and book is shaken. The title block on the spine is very rubbed. 12. Wild Horse Mesa: 1928 365 pages. From page 1: "The mystery and insurmountable nature of Wild Horse Mesa had usurped many a thoughtful hour of Chane Weymer's lonely desert life in Utah. Every wandering rider had a strange story to tell about his vast tableland. But Chane had never before seen it from so lofty and commanding a height as this to which Toddy Nokin the Piute had led him; not had there ever before been so impelling a fascination as that engendered by the Indian." Cresca Foreign Luncheons
New York: Cresca Company 1910. A very rare piece of ephemera from the Cresca Company purveyor of fine foods from the turn of the last century 1910 profusely illustrated with period photographs decorations and illustrations. Cresca Company was a successor company to another food purveyor Reiss and Brady. It was headquartered in New York City and Bordeaux France. It billed itself as "importer of the world's delicacies." 12mo size softcover with both stapled and sewn binding; some pages are numbered most are not about 35 pages. Stated Second Edition. The cover illustration has an Edwardian style with its Gibson Girl-like illustration. Alas none of the illustrations include the name of the artist but these illustrations are from that time period. This is an interesting piece of ephemera for a food lover or historian: sample menus; recipes for the items on the sample menus and a list of Cresca Imported Delicacies one could have ordered at the time including green figs in cognac; tuny fish in tin really it says "tuny" cailles quail in tin; confits in glass; much more to peruse including Cresca assorted boxes "roast capon whole in aspic for automobile luncheon." Recipes include: Eggs Gourmet; Spinach Timbales; Coup Moquin; Smelts a la Somerset; Pimiento Bisque; Brussel Sprouts a la Magdeburg; Frozen Cheese Alexandria; Poinsettia Salad; Fraise Salad; Delmonico Chicken with Glazed Sweetbread; Asparagus in Lemon Rings many more. Cresca Company no longer exists. This is a fragile item a Reading Copy with the front cover fep and last page detached. Our photographs show the item in three separate pieces. There is a dampstain on the top quarter inch with some yellow or blue ink bleed this occurs in the blank space above any text or decorations with dampstain to the last page and back cover and inside front cover and to top quarter of last several pages. 1908 Archive of Letters Written to a Prominent Wyoming County Pennsylvania Female Lawyer and Wellesley College Graduate from Her Privileged Friends
Tunkhannok Wyoming County Pennsylvania. Good with no dust jacket. 1908. Manuscript. On offer is a collection of three letters written to Ms. Eulalie Piatt member of the prominent Piatt legal family of Tunkhannock Pennsylvania. The collection also includes a legal judgment against one William Phelps who owed money to Eulalies grandfather Mr. William M. Piatt. Eulalie Piatt Ogden 1878-1970 was a graduate of Wyoming Seminary 1897 Wellesley College 1901 and a prominent Pennsylvania lawyer. She was the wife of Wyoming County PA Attorney General Joseph F. Ogden 1874-1949. Eulalie was the daughter of James Wilson Piatt and granddaughter of William M. Piatt. The men of the Piatt family of Tunkhannock Wyoming County Pennsylvania were all prominent lawyers in the area. Piatt and Ogden married in 1917 joining two prominent legal families into one. The letters on offer were written in 1908 before Eulalie and Piatt married and after her graduation from Wellesley College. The letters are all written by her friends who are blatantly upper class. These young women can hardly contain their privilege. The first letter was written by a friend signature indecipherable in September of 1908. This friend had recently returned from a journey on the S. S. Romanic subsequently renamed the S. S. Scandinavian. She describes the pleasant cross-Atlantic journey and her intention to turn her trip diary into a book some day. She describes a plan to learn European languages with a friend so she may eloquently interact with fellow European travelers in the future: Myself and a friend are holding weekly bouts with the Dago languaes which I hope to speak mucha the next time! The next time! Those are words that charm every European travellerThe next letter was written in December 1908. This letter is a two page thank you note from a friend in New Jersey. Her signature is also difficult to decipher. In this two-page letter she thanks Eulalie for your dainty gift from across the deep blue sea. Her friend is a teacher who explains that her fate this semester is to teach double sessions. The final letter is a long newsy piece written to Eulalie in December 1908 from a friend named Clara who is entertaining in her affectation. Writing on Le Grand Hotel Venise stationary she writes over five pages regaling Eulalie with tales of men obsessed with her challenges remembering to speak Italian difficulties with the hired help and her concern about lacking time to hand-make all of her Christmas gifts. This collection of three letters and a legal ruling provide a well-rounded view of the life of the rich in the early 20th century. The significance of the circles in which Eulalie ran provide a backdrop when recognizing the prominence to which Eulalie and her husband would rise in the near future. The three letters and legal document are all in very good condition. Age toning is noted but no rips or tears. All three letters have accompanying envelopes. On offer is an original signature of Governor Hudson Lowe 1769-1844 an Anglo-Irish soldier and colonial administrator appointed to oversee the incarceration of Napoleon Bonaparte. He became Governor of St. Helena the year following his appointment as Napoleon's gaoler on the island. His constant paranoia of the rescue of the deposed leader led to allegations of heavy-handedness and tactlessness. This signature is on paper pasted to a card bearing Lowes name in a different hand. 1897 Cut Autograph of British Stage Actor Who Originated the Role of Cyrus Blenkarn and Performed on Stages Across England and America

On offer is an original signature of English actor Edward Smith Willard known professionally as E. S. Willard 1853-1915 dated April 1897. Brighton born Edward made his debut on the stage at Weymouth in The Lady of Lyons in 1869. He then toured with E. A. Sothern and later joined various stock companies. Coming to London in 1875 he played Antonio in The Merchant of Venice with Charles Rice in 1876. After a varied experience in Shakespearean and other plays in 1881 he was engaged by Wilson Barrett at the Princess Theatre where he played in The Lights of London The Silver King and other well-known pieces. In 1886 he made a sensation as Jim the Penman at the Haymarket. One of his greatest successes was his production of The Middleman by Henry Arthur Jones at the Shaftesbury in 1889 where he himself created the part of Cyrus Blenkarn. Reprising the role in New York in 1890 he made his mark in America. This piece of unevenly cut card roughly 4-½ x 2-½ inches bears Willards signature clearly and a date of April 97. 1936 Letter from Nazi Propagandist to a Canadian IOC Member Who Advocated for Canada's Participation in Hitler's Olympics
Berlin German Toronto Ontario Canada. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1936. Non-Book. On offer is a typed German-language letter signed by the Nazi director of radio and television propaganda and author of several Nazi propaganda books Eugen Hadamovsky 1904-1945. In this letter Hadamovsky writes to Canadian International Olympic Committee IOC member James G. B. Merrick 1871-1946 shortly after the Berlin Olympics on October 6 1936. The letter would have been sent along with a copy of the book Olympia-Weltsender which celebrated the German broadcasting of Hitler's Olympics. Hadamovsky writes effusively on his personal letterhead thanking Merrick for his leadership in making the Olympic Games a success. He states that the enclosed Olympia-Weltsender created by the German Broadcasting Corporation "provides a simple factual report of this greatest sporting event of all time" and states that because of the success of the broadcasting the world had the opportunity to hear of the "unifying idea of peace" presented by the Nazi-led Olympic Games. The simplicity of this letter betrays the shocking history of the lead-up to the 1936 Olympic Games which became something of a platform for Hitler to gain a global audience and present a positive image of the Nazi regime. It also speaks to Canada's history-altering involvement in promoting and supporting Hitler's Olympics despite glaring moral and ethical issues related to the rampant racism of post-1933 Germany that saw non-Aryan German athletes excluded from German national athletics. This letter is a vital piece of pre-war German and Canadian history that provides rare insight into Canada's laissez-faire attitude toward Hitler's regime and the power of Nazi propaganda both of which contributed to what was to come a few short years after the Berlin Olympics. About James G. B. Merrick and Canada's Role in the 1936 OlympicsThe Canadian Merrick was one of two Canadian representatives on the International Olympic Committee IOC along with Sir George McLaren Brown. Both Canadians voted to hold the 1936 Olympics in Berlin though this was two years before Hitler seized power while he was still an influential leader of the Nazi party. Once Hitlers regime banned all non-Aryan athletes from their athletic associations namely German Jews it became questionable whether Germany should host the Olympics. But the IOC turned a blind eye and took Hitler at his word that he would make the German team inclusive. There was a large movement in Canada to boycott the 1936 Berlin Olympics if they were not relocated. Canadians Reverend R. J. Irwin of the United Church of Canada and Rabbi Eisendrath spoke at the IOC to argue against Germany hosting and to advocate for Canada's boycott should the Games be held in Germany. Merrick spoke strongly in favour of Germany hosting and Canadas participation. This lead to a vote of the Canadian Olympic Committee COC in Halifax where it was argued that Canada should not condone this Olympics due to the very blatant racism and prejudice in German sport which opposed the Olympic spirit and mandate. The COC voted that Canada should participate and should not advocate for a location change. Merrick was also one of three Canadian members of the Amateur Athletic Union AAU. It was the AAU that voted to send the United States of Americas Olympic team to the 1936 Olympics despite the US initially boycotting the games. The three Canadians abstained from the vote despite recognizing that every vote counted in what was an extremely tight outcome. In fact two votes against US participation would have kept America from sending a team to the Nazi-led games. This occurred after the Amateur Athletic Union Canada AAUC had already voted to have Canada send a team to Hitlers games. Merrick made his home mostly in Toronto Ontario and this letter was sent to his residence on Deer Park Crescent. About Eugen Hadamovsky Nazi PropagandistEugen Hadamovsky was in 1936 Reichssendeleiter Reich Broadcasting Leader in the Third Reich. He would later be appointed to vice-president of the broadcasting department in the Reichskulturkammer Reich Chamber of Culture. From 1940 he was head of the radio department under Goebbels in the Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. Hadamovsky also wrote several propaganda books and initiated the launch of the worlds first regular television service Fernsehsender "Paul Nipkow" which became hugely popular when it covered the 1936 Olympic Games. This piece is typed on Romerturm Bankpost watermarked paper with a similarly branded envelope. Creased only at the original folds the letter is in Fine condition with no signs of age or wear. The envelope is in Very Good condition having some impact creasing at the edges. Note: letter is in German English quotations above were completed using online translation software. He served as Minister of Education and briefly as Prime Minister of France under the Third Republic. Known for his support of secular education civil liberties and moderate reform Simon was a key figure in shaping modern French republican ideals. He remained active as a senator and intellectual until his death. The text is written in a different hand and ink from the signature. This fragment is mounted on an aged card bearing a truncated list of names in a third hand without context. The overall piece is 5- X 2- Inches. 19th Century Cut Signature of Decorated British Army Officer and Adjutant-General in India Sir Edward Lugard
Britain United Kingdom England. Good with no dust jacket. Non-Book. On offer is a signature of Sir Edward Lugard 1810-1889 of the British Army. It is signed with the rank Major General. Lugard received his first commission in 1842 as an Ensign in the 31st Huntingdonshire Regiment of Foot and served in the First Anglo-Afghan War and both First and Second Sikh Wars. His station in India continued as he was appointed as Adjutant-General for the Punjab District in 1848 then as Deputy Adjutant-General in Bombay in 1854. He acted as Chief of Staff during the Anglo-Persian War 1856-57 before becoming Adjutant-General in India in 1957 a position he held until his return to the United Kingdom in 1859 . In 1862 he was appointed Colonel of his previous regiment the 31st Huntingdonshire which amalgamated in 1881 with the 70th Foot to form the East Surrey Regiment after which he was Colonel of the 1st Battalion of the new regiment until his death. Lugards duties in the United Kingdom included serving as Permanent Under-Secretary of State of War from 1861 until 1871. In March of 1867 he advanced to Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath and became a Privy Councillor in November 1871. His promotion to the rank of General followed in November 1872. Sir Edward died in 1898 at the age of 88. He is memorialized with a plaque in All Saints Church Kingston-upon-Thames Surrey. This signature is on a piece of cut paper measuring 3-¾ x 1-1/4 inches with torn corners and age toning. There is a partial watermark on the right edge that may have been a shield or crest. There is an additional comment in blue pencil written below that says: Called here .You were not at homeThe initials at the end could be WBG indicating Walter Bayne Geikie but it is unclear. Walter Bayne Geikie MD 1830-1917 noted doctor and educator was licensed by the Medical Board of Upper Canada in July 1851. He practised in Bond Head from 1851 to 1856. He worked at Victoria College at Cobourg 1856-1870 and the Medical Faculty of Trinity College in 1871 as registrar and treasurer and on the death of E. M. Hodder in 1878 was made dean. The address 52 Maitland St. Is near Trinity College. Geikie was on the consulting staff of Toronto General Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children until 1903. He was also president of the Union Loan Savings Co. And Toronto City Mission treasurer in Canada of the Armenian Relief Fund and vice-president of the Upper Canada Bible Society. Dated November 23 1920 it is addressed to an E. L. Newcombe Esq. In which Eugene Lafleur politely declined a suggestion of contributing to a volume of the British Book of International Law. Signed E. Lafleur. This letter also bears a date stamp of the Canadian Department of Justice for Nov 24 1920. Eugene Lafleur was a distinguished lawyer and author. He received his education at McGill University B. A. 1877; B. C. L. 1877; D. C. L. 1900 and was called to the Quebec bar in 1881 becoming a Queen's Counsel Q. C. in 1899. From 1890 to 1909 he served as a professor of international law at McGill University where he became an outstanding jurist. In addition to numerous papers on legal subjects he authored The Conflict of Laws in the Province of Quebec Montreal 1898. Quoting following from the Ontario Bar Association newsletter: "Lafleur was a renowned lawyer of the Quebec Bar remembered for his integrity. It has been said that he would never present a frivolous or unsure argument before a court . He was also known to decline to accept cases that had no merit. In one instance while arguing before the Supreme Court of Canada one of the Justices asked a question that could have been understood to suggest that Lafleur had presented a meritless argument . In response Lafleur bowed to the Court and he replied that under the circumstances it would not be appropriate for him to continue his argument and he should withdraw. Lafleur put away his brief bowed to the Court again and he walked out without further comment . Perplexed the Justices adjourned the matter. Several hours later Lafleur received a visitor at his room at the Château Laurier hotel. It was the Chief Justice of Canada who came to apologize". This 8 x 10 inch page shows aging and browning at the edges more prominent on the right side with some additional chipping and thinning of the paper. There are full span creases centred both horizontally and vertically. The typed text is slight faded along the right age and there is minor bleeding of the signature. 1877 Signature of Scottish Poet and Founder of the Clarence Club Thomas Campbell

On offer is a strip of paper bearing the signature of Thomas Campbell dated 9 May 1877 and an accompanying address label recovered and pasted to a strip likely from the same page. Thomas Campbell was a Scottish poet. He was a founder and the first President of the Clarence Club and a co-founder of the Literary Association of the Friends of Poland; he was also one of the initiators of a plan to found what became University College London. In 1799 he wrote "The Pleasures of Hope" a traditional 18th-century didactic poem in heroic couplets. He also produced several stirring patriotic war songs"Ye Mariners of England" "The Soldier's Dream" "Hohenlinden" and in 1801 "The Battle of the Baltic". These items both from a 7 wide page measure unknown Inches tall for the signed note and 1-½ inches for the address. Prussia Germany. Good with no dust jacket. 1863. Non-Book. On offer is the signature of Frederick Wilhelm Nikolaus Karl 1831-1888 Crown Prince of Prussia. This item also bears the text Berlin 1863 and an embossed stamp of the prince as well as his seal of office with the text Adjutantur Sr. Koen: Hoh: d. Kronprinzen v. Pr. - Adjutantur Seiner Königlichen Hoheit des Kronprinzen von Preußen Adjutancy of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Prussia. Frederick III or Friedrich III was German Emperor and King of Prussia for 99 days between March and his death in June 1888 during the Year of the Three Emperors. Known informally as "Fritz" he was the only son of Emperor Wilhelm I and was raised in his family's tradition of military service. Following the unification of Germany in 1871 his father then King of Prussia became German Emperor. Upon Wilhelm's death at the age of ninety on 9 March 1888 the thrones passed to Frederick who had been German Crown Prince for seventeen years and Crown Prince of Prussia for twenty-seven years. Frederick was suffering from cancer of the larynx when he died at the age of 56 following unsuccessful medical treatments for his condition. This piece is the lower fragment of a larger document and measures 8-¾ x 5-½ inches. There is some tearing and thinning from being previously mounted and there is some discolouration apparent. The embossing is crisply detailed; as is the wax seal though there is some visible cracking. Condition is Good.; Autograph; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1 pages; Signed by Author . unknown

Handwritten at the top of the page is: "To JS Souiers with the Compliments of the Author. 4/7/03. Below the following is typed: Thomas Chisholm M. D. 1842- Poet. Author Dialogues on English History Toronto Briggs 1903". Dr. Thomas Chisholm 1842-1931 was a Medical doctor politician and author of Dialogues on British History 1903. He was a high school teacher in Fergus and in 1879 he graduated from the Toronto School of Medicine to become a country doctor in the Fergus and Arthur areas of Ontario. In 1904 he was elected by a majority to represent East Huron in the Federal House as their MP and four years later he again returned. In 1911 he retired from public life. His speech in the House on Imperial Unity was of a high order and ended with a poem he himself composed. This is a 5 x 7-¼ inch book page torn from a left edge binding. It demonstrates age-toning and has some staining on the left edge. Condition is Fair. ; Autograph; 5x7.5; 1 pages; Signed by Author . unknown

1883 Signature of Canadian Pioneering Weather Forecaster Henry George Vennor
Ontario Quebec Canada Montreal. Good with no dust jacket. 1883. Non-Book. On offer is an inked signature on a heavy gilded-edge card of Henry George Vennor 1841-1884 a noted Canadian geologist and ornithologist who became well known for his accurate forecasting of the weather. It bears the date 4/30/83 and Montreal. Vennor born in Montreal to a merchant father attended McGill College studying natural sciences and civil engineering. From 1865 he was on the staff of the Geological Survey of Canada focusing on mining prospects in southern Ontario and Quebec assisting in discovering gold apatite and phosphate deposits. He resigned in 1881 citing a conflict with his own interests in phosphate mining. In the 1870s Vennor began studying weather patterns correctly predicting in Montreal newspapers an unseasonably mild and muddy Christmas in 1875. In 1877 he published the first of his Vennor Almanacs predicting the weather. It sold well and became an annual publication expanding to an American edition in 1881. At the end of that year Vennor was visited in Montreal by Mark Twain who said of him in an after-dinner speech at the Windsor Hotel "Canada has a reputation for magnificent winter weather and has a prophet who is bound to deliver it." As an ornithologist his book Our Birds of Prey was published in 1876. He died in Montreal on June 8 1884.This item is an ink signature on thick-card with minor age toning 3-¾ x 1-¾ inches mounted on an age-toned 5 x 3 inch card with slightly worn corners.
