Hardcover bound in original brown publisher's cloth with cover designs embossed in blind and with a central image of a reclining woman dreaming in gilt on the front cover and in blind on the rear cover. The binding is worn and soiled and has some chipping to the cloth on the front cover near the fore edge. Front cover has been damped and this is more evident on the front inner pastedown. Spine ends a little chipped. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. The front pastedown also has a piece of an early newspaper clipping pasted to the top edge. Frontis piece illustration of a woman dreaming on a couch with several people or babies or angels in a window above her. The text block is sound and the text is foxed. No date. Worldcat locates 3 copies and suggests a date between 1839 and 1859. The front matter of the book notes that the "Dictionary of Dreams" at the rear is based on that of Andrew Bell. A colour insignia bookplate is on the third front flyleaf along with a handwritten inscription at the top of the page. The title page and frontispiece are quite toned. Text is foxed. There are 14 plates including the portrait collates complete. One of the plates is detached but present. The plates have foxing and have heavy browning about the edges. Contains an early British printing of the United States Constitution Hardcover begins page 100 of the second section. Hardcover bound in original full leather with raised bands on the spine. Spine also has a burgundy lettering piece the date 1787 and rules in gilt. The binding is worn and rubbed. Front hinge is cracked and the rear hinge is starting. Removed bookplate from the front pastedown but an early simple paper bookplate bears the name "Robert Y. Hayne" and the title page has the signature of "Robt. Y. Hayne." The text of the book is toned and the text block is sound. Robert Young Hayne 1791-1839 was Governor of South Carolina 1832-1834 and was Mayor of Charleston 1836-1837. He was an ardent States Rights supporter. He died in Asheville North Carolina. This volume is notable for the inclusion of an early printing of the United States Constitution page 100 of the second section. This volume also includes George Washington's "Plan of a new Constitution of the United States of America agreed upon at a Convention held at New York." There is also "Dr. Ruston's Letter to Dr. Franklin on the Cure of Smoky Chimneys From Dr. Franklin's Philosophical and Miscellaneous Papers." Page 147 has the "History of Virginian Mountains. Hardcover bound in early full leather with gilt rolls on the edges of the covers and some gilt designs and a burgundy leather label on the spine. The binding is worn but sound. A small paper label is affixed near the foot of the spine. Front hinge starting. The binding is a bit mottled as if it were covered in some glossy treatment which is partly rubbed away. Early library bookplate on the front pastedown is crudely torn away exposing some board beneath. An early price is written upside-down on the rear pastedown. Endpapers foxed; text is toned. Author's name is written in pencil on the title page. Fitz-Greene Halleck 1790-1867 was a popular poet in the early 19th century and was considered the "American Byron." He was born and raised in Guilford Connecticut and was part of the "Knickerbocker Group." Halleck never married and it has been suggested by his biographer that he was gay and was in love with his best friend and fellow writer Joseph Rodman Drake. Halleck served as best man at Drake's wedding and he wrote of his love for his friend and his sorrow at the marriage. This volume also contains a poem "On the Death of Joseph Rodman Drake" written in 1820. A scarce book. The last copy reported to sell at an established Book Auction was in 1945 Parke-Bernet and it appears that the same book from the 1945 record appeared in the Scribner Catalogue of 1950. A 1939 catalogue also Scribners says of this title "One of the scarcest books of American poetry this contains Halleck's best work: the stirring Marco Bozzaris and the exquisite lines On the Death of Joseph Rodman Drake. <br/> <br/> Published by G. & C. The binding shows heavy wear as well as some soiling and pest damage. A reinforced paper spine is all but perished. Outer wrappers show some foxing. The text block is delicate and may easily separate however the text is largely unopened. Extensive damping at the lower quarter of the binding affecting the text. This is heavier at the front where it affects the bottom 3/4 of the fore edge to over half of the bottom edge and retreats the further one goes though the text. Contains two large foldout tables at the rear. Housed in a board backed plastic sleeve. Text is in French. A rough translation of the title is "Notice on the Current Financial Position of the States of North America Accompanied by some details on the Debts of the Principal European States." The United States was in financial distress in the 1830s and 1840s. The Panic of 1837 led to a tightening of credit especially from the Bank of England. 19 of the 26 U.S. states had issued State Bonds for finance internal improvements roads railroads canals and a number of these were in default. The U.S. enacted the Bankruptcy Act of 1841 to allow debtors to file for their own bankruptcy without creditors initiating it although this was repealed in 1843. Much of the U.S. debt at that time was held by European banks. Alexandre Lombard 1810-1887 was a Swiss banker. This is a rare analysis of the financial health of the United States during a time of crisis by one of its creditors. We have found no auctions records for this work; currently no other copies appear to be for sale. It does not appear to have been translated into English. <br/> <br/> Imprimere de Ch. Gruaz paperback

The third front flyleaf has pencilled notations indicating the successive owners of the book from 1884 to 1928. The text is smudged has toning and some foxing as well as some pencil scribbling. Page 177 has a two inch diagonal tear at the upper right corner of the page. This is a well loved volume that was later rebound in a fine leather binding. Bound volume containing the reports of the first 15 councils dating from 1803 to 1818. Bound in early full sheep. The leather binding is quite worn and dry and is scuffed and abraded. The hinges are sturdy. Lacks the top leather label on the spine; the bottom label reads "Vol. I / From the / 1st to 15th Council / Inclusive." Early owner's name at the headcap of the spine is illegible and no names within. The binding is designs with rules of alternating oval and diamond designs in blind about the edges. There is some pest damage to the outside edges of the text block towards the rear of the book not affecting the text. Text is toned and foxed with some damping at the front and rear. Two blank flyleaves at the front an numerous blank pages at the rear. Most of the reports have their own title pages. The reports that do not have separate title pages are those for: 8 1810; 12 1815; 14 1817; and 15 1818. In the 6th report 1808 there is insect damage for the leaves of pages 7-8 and 9-10 with significant loss of lettering on the fore edge of pages 7-8. Rare. 1-8 4 9-49 i-ii ix 1-2; 1-32; 1-47; 1-44; 1-46; 20 1; 42; 15 1; 56 iii; 56; 36; 88; 69; 40; 45 pages with 10 blank flyleaves at the rear. The final few flyleaves of torn and stained. Wade R. Brown was the Dean of the music department at the State Normal and Industrial School now UNCG in Greensboro North Carolina and is the faculty member for whom the Brown Building is named. ~~ Milnor Jones was an itinerant Episcopal preacher from South Carolina who went to western North Carolina in the late 19th century to preach and establish churches in the remote mountain valleys. Along with Cheshire he helped re-establish and build a mission and church in Valle Crucis North Carolina near Boone. This volume contains an account of his work in South Carolina as well as in the NC counties of Watauga Mitchell and Ashe. Chapter 5 pages 54 to 66 is on the Valle Crucis Mission. Headcap has some fraying.There is a pencilled notation on the front flyleaf by previous owner. An inscription has been written on the front flyleaf by the author "'The Times' with compliments of the writer". Some pencilled marks in text which is lightly toned with occasional small toned spots. Josiah Staunton Moore 1843-1913 was a Private in Company B of the 15th Virginia Regiment in the Civil War. He was captured at Five Forks on April 1 1865. The leather is chipped and is darkened on the rear cover from having been damped and is peeling up where it is chipped revealing the wooden board beneath. The front pastedown is torn away revealing the front wooden board. Lacks the clasp. Several signatures a bit sprung. There is a chip at the fore edge of the title page affecting some of the lettering. The text is toned and stained. Bottom edge torn away from the bottom of the final leaf but there does not appear to be text missing. Worldcat also notes 252 pages. Printed in "Old German" type. It appears as though one leaf has been torn out after the last leaf of text but we don't think this is a text leaf. Penciled notations on front and back of title page. Text is foxed has damp staining in places. Last three pages have been written on and the upper right corner of the last two pages has been torn off. "William H. Porter" has been written on the verso of one of the rear flyleaves. "Christian C--tes " is written on the rear pastedown. Text is sound. Emily Taylor 1795-1872 was an English poet hymn writer and children's book writer. Hinges quite sturdy and supple. Marbled endpapers and all edges marbled. Prior owner's bookplate on the front pastedown of "Lewis St. Louis." Text is clean.
