Emma Roberts 1794-1840 was an English travel writer and poet who lived in India for several years. Her text accompanies the beautiful engravings based on drawings by Commander Robert James Elliot who travelled from 1822 to 1824 in India Canton Guangzhou and the Red Sea area. Inscription on front free endpaper verso indicating that the book was given by Samuel Fennell on his engagement to Anabella Groom about 1837; she was the granddaughter of Hannah Lightfoot; later Anabella gave it to her friend Henry Plumptre Ramsden "lest it should in her own words fall into unworthy hands"; she died in 1882 and was buried in Trumpington Churchyard near Cambridge. The Rev. Henry Plumptre Ramsden 1848-1901 was the rector at Cottingham Yorkshire Eng. This booklet was probably given to the guests at the celebration of the 10th wedding anniversary of Mary Harris and Wistar Morris. The 10th anniversary is traditionally the tin anniversary which would be observed by a present of a tin bank containing railroad government or other bonds. Instead in this case it contained the poem written presumably by Wistar Morris to celebrate their anniversary as well as a shorter poem he had written 10 years earlier to welcome her to Green Hill Farm. Mary Harris Morris 1836-1924 was on the board of managers of the Orphan's Asylum of Philadelphia and the Howard Home for women discharged from prison; she also opened a school for girls in Tokyo in 1890. Wistar Morris 1815-1891 was a founder of Morris Tasker & Co. in Philadelphia a director of the Pennsylvania Railroad president of the Pennsylvania Hospital board a trustee of Haverford College and founder of the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle Pa. Their home Green Hill Farm was sold to Friends' Central School in 1925. Very scarce. A Catalogue of the Classic Contents of Strawberry Hill Collected by Horace Walpole provenance: Sir John Charles Robinson

Later 19th-century brown cloth spine with original boards. Engraved cover title: A Catalogue of the Contents of Strawberry Hill. Engraved title page. George Robins the auctioneer advertised the sale to begin on April 25 1842 and continue for 24 days. However the original plan to sell some of the prints drawings and illustrated books in large lots was altered so the contents originally proposed for the seventh and eight days of the sale were withdrawn recatalogued in smaller lots and sold later. As many as 7 editions of the catalog are known. This edition includes descriptions of contents through day 24 omitting days 7 and 8; the 6th day concludes with lot 160 omitting the Waldegrave manuscripts originally lots 161- 187. It does not include the "Names of purchasers and the prices" sometimes found on 58 pages at the end. Inscription on p. xxi dated Jan. 7 1855 by John Robinson who relates taking nuts from the chestnut trees at Strawberry Hill said to have been planted by Horace Walpole at the time of the sale and planting the resulting trees in Kinnington Park. Part of the last line of the inscription was lost when the pages were trimmed during the later 19th-century rebinding. Robinson's name is also written on the front board. He is identified by Sotheran as Sir John Charles Robinson 1824-1913. with documents from the 2002 sale of the catalog by Henry Sotheran London. That part of Seymour's speech dealing with national rather than state affairs which is reprinted here appeared first in the Weekly Patriot And Union of Harrisburg Pennsylvania on January 22 1863. The author Horatio Seymour 1810-1886 had served in the New York State Assembly as Mayor of Utica N.Y. and as Governor of New York from 1852 to 1854. A supporter of Stephen Douglas Seymour became a leading opponent of Lincoln's support for emancipation centralization of power and restriction of civil liberties. He was re-elected as governor of New York in 1862. In his inauguration speech printed here he noted that New York had already furnished 220000 soldiers for the Union effort and addressed the imposition of martial law and the necessity of restoring the Union. In Good Condition: disbound and lacking original wrappers but otherwise complete; slight mark on title page from a paper clip and some light soiling; leaves are starting to separate; several small ink stains; otherwise the pages are clean.
