‎1823 Manuscript Letter of Well-Known Royal Navy Officer and British Politician Who Served As Governor of Newfoundland and a Conservative MP in England‎

‎Leeward Island Station. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1823. Unbound. On offer is a super original 1823 manuscript letter handwritten by a staff member of Sir Thomas John Cochrane 1789-1872 Royal British Navy officer and Governor of Newfoundland from 1825-1834. He would have had this letter written for him while in command of the Leeward Island Station which had been handed over to him by Sir Edward Owen in late 1822. He would remain in command of this station until he returned to England in late 1824. The letter was written to one Captain Porter and is transcribed below: "Sir Thomas Cochrane presents his compliments to Captain Porter. He thinks he heard Captain Porter mention that he had information about Pirates in the neighbourhood the particulars of which Sir Thomas forgot to ask Captain Peters who might oblige Sir Thomas by favouring him with any information he may be at liberty to disclose Sir Thomas not having the means of posessing such Intelligence there being neither English Coastal or Merchants at this port." dated March 7 1823. It is signed by an unknown secretary of Sir Cochrane's. This letter is an important piece of both British naval and political history as well as Canadian history as Cochrane was a key figure in Newfoundland’s early days. BIO NOTES: Sir Thomas John Cochrane 1789-1872 son of Admiral Sir Alexander Inglis Cochrane 1758-1832 was a British Royal Navy officer and politician. He became Governor of Newfoundland from 1825-1834. During that time he was a controversial figure and helped establish representative government. He was elected as a Conservative MP for Ipswich Suffolk in England and was in office from 1839-1841. Other highlights of his career include his time as second in command and then commander-in-chief of the China Station 1842-47 and commander-in-chief for Portsmouth 1852-55. Cochrane became Admiral of the Fleet in 1865. In his personal life Cochrane married Matilda Ross later Wishart and they had two sons including the well-known Alexander Cochrane-Wishart-Baillie 1816-1890 and two daughters. ‎Ellis County Texas. Fair with no dust jacket. 1929. Hardcover. On offer is a neat biology composition book kept by during the 1929-1930 academic year in Ellis County Texas. The composition book is stamped with the name Norman Nichol Sartain 1913-1982 and indicates that all drawings are by Sartain. However two classmates Freddie Mae Adams later Epps 1915-2002 and Mary Beck later Browning 1912-2002 have also hand-written their names under Sartain’s. It is possible that Sartain Beck and Adams collaborated on the work. It is also possible that all the work is Sartain’s and his friends just doodled their names in there. Either way the inclusion of the girls’ names enabled us to trace these students to Ellis County Texas. SEE BIO NOTES FOR MORE ON SARTAIN AT THE END OF THE LISTING. The book contains 17 pages of quite detailed and thoroughly labeled pencil drawings that clearly demonstrate the growth of the students’ knowledge over the academic year or semester. Page one contains labeled diagrams of an amoeba a plant cell and a typical cell. Page two contains 12 diagrams of types of cells pages 3-5 contain diagrams of insects and fish pages 6-7 focus on the anatomy of a frog pages 8-9 are diagrams of birds. On page 10 is a very impressive labeled drawing of a human skeleton and the rest of the pages focus on drawings of various parts of the human body from individual cells through organs. There is evidence that a number of pages have been excised from the book but the students have numbered the pages and there are no pages missing between pages 1 and 17 but there are two page 2s. This suggests this composition book served as an end-of-term project of sorts to demonstrate the students’ learning over the term. This composition book would be of interest to a variety of collectors and researchers. The artistry of the students who composed the diagrams would be fascinating to study as would the sequence of learning in a 1920s high school biology class. Being drawn by students in Ellis County Texas it would be a nice addition to any Texas library’s collection focused on science general academics or student artists. As Sartain became a notable name in Texas and New Mexico radio see bio notes this piece may also be of interest to a collector of radio history. The book is hardcover measuring 8.25x6.75 inches. It contains 17 pages of labeled diagrams. The covers are in fair condition with wear marks on the surface and along the edges. The binding is sewn and is loose. A number of pages are also loose in the book and many have detached from the binding. The pencil drawings are impressively clear and neatly labelled. BIO NOTES ON NORMAN SARTAIN: After completing high school in Ellis County Norman Nichol Sartain went on to become a radio broadcasting engineer in New Mexico and Texas. He was a member of the National Radio Club. He served in the US Navy in World War II. He was married to Annie Frances Cox 1922-2006 from 1940-1977. They had one son named William who did not survive infancy. ‎Indonesia. Before1970s. Water buffalo hide and pigment 29 x 44.5 cms affixed with cotton to a baton 41 cms. A folk puppet depicting Nyi Brayut and her husband Ki Brayut the small lead figure in red jacket and pants who have a great many children. Kyi Brayut is carrying on his shoulder a support which connnects the children to the basket like base on which the children are being carried. The term "brayut" comes from the word "brayat" meaning offspring. <br> <br>Of ancient origin this shadow puppet was traditionally used for the ritual ceremony held at the 7th month of pregnancy to safeguard the mother and baby during its birth. The display of the puppet would symbolically "bring down" Nyi and Ki Brayut and so magically intervene to assist in a safe birth. <br> <br>This puppet was often used from the early 1970s onwards in government campaigns urging the use of birth control to limit family size. <br> <br>Purchased in Java in the early 1970s. . unknown‎
